  • AIB, UNILAG partner on metallurgical lab usage

The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on the use of its metallurgical laboratory at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja.

The spokesperson for AIB, Mr Tunji Oketunbi, said in a statement issued on Sunday that the MoU was signed recently by the parties in Lagos.

The AIB Commissioner, Mr Akin Olateru signed on behalf of the agency while the UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, signed on behalf of the institution.

Olateru said that the laboratory was to the benefit of Nigeria, students of higher institutions of learning and industries in the country.

He said the establishment of the laboratory equipment in the country would save Nigeria huge capital flights, which would have been expended on air tickets, hotels and others by researchers.

He noted that the agency had written to 12 higher institutions of learning on possible collaboration on the usage of the facility.

The commissioner said unfortunately, only three universities; UNILAG, University of Ilorin, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, responded to its letters seeking for collaboration.

He emphasised that the United States’ National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) partners with public and private organisations in the US and wondered why same could not be replicated in Nigeria.

Olateru said: “I believe we can make this country great with collaborations. We need collaborations like this to help us add values to the country.

“We actually wrote to 12 universities, but only three responded to our letters, which is very unfortunate.

“This is why I want to thank your leadership for the signing of this MoU because it shows the efforts you are putting in place to increase the knowledge base of this great institution of learning.”

He, however stressed that the AIB would not compel any organisation or institution to collaborate with it on the use of the equipment.

Responding, Ogundipe said university education was about research, adding that UNILAG was a research-oriented institution.

The VC said UNILAG would continue to collaborate with other universities and institutions across the country and beyond.

He said the students of the university had been taking the centre stage in the country while at the international level; they had equally been making great impacts.

Ogundipe said: “The direction of research now is about collaborations and networking.

” I am glad that we are starting this on a good note. I want to assure you that we will make maximum use of this with our students.

” Our intention is to make our students known locally and visible at the global stage and I am happy we are achieving that so far.

“On our own, we will give this collaboration 100 per cent support it deserves.”

    Buhari returns to Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to Abuja after participating in the “One Planet” summit in Paris, France.

The President’s aircraft landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 4:35 p.m. on Thursday.

Buhari was received by senior government officials including his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abba Kyari and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Musa Bello.

While in Paris, President Buhari had appealed to the international community to support Nigeria’s commitment to reduce the negative effects of climate change.

Buhari told participants that Nigeria could not implement its Nationally Determined Contributions without adequate financial, technical and capacity building support from developed nations

He said Nigeria had already ratified the Paris Agreement in May 2017 but its Nationally Determined Contributions to reduce emission by 20 per cent by 2020 and 40 per cent by 2030 could not be attained alone.

  • Abuja Airport closure: Organisers postpone Intl Trade and Investment Conference

The Nigeria International Trade and Investment Conference (NITIC) 2017 with focus on agribusiness, manufacturing and financial services billed to hold in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital in March, has been postponed till June.

Organisers, Africa International Trade and Development Trust said the postponement was due to the closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for upgrade of its dilapidated runway.

The spokesman for the conference organiser, NITIC, Mr Sand Mba Kalu disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

The conference, themed: “Multiple Frontiers-Moving Away From Oil”, aims to bring together local and international stakeholders to a common platform to strengthen the positive contributions from International Trade and Investment in the non-oil sector, focusing on agribusiness, manufacturing and financial services.

NITIC 2017, endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) amongst others, scheduled for March 2017 at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja, is now slated for June 2017 at the same venue.

He said the change in date was necessary to accommodate the interest of stakeholders while allowing for the completion of maintenance and extensive repairs at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, by the Federal Government.

    “Efforts to convince registered participants and embassies to use the Kaduna International Airport were fruitless;

“We have talked to several of them but they seemed not interested in Kaduna. So, the only option was to postpone it to June, when the renovation work at the Abuja airport runway would have been over.

“This change in date is at a huge cost, with travels and other logistics altered”, said Kalu.

Recession to end soon, Kumuyi predicts

The General Superintendent, Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, on Wednesday assured Nigerians that the current economic recession will end very soon.

Kumuyi gave the advice during a media conference on the forthcoming Deeper Life Abuja mega crusade tagged ‘A Day of Supernatural Wonders’, scheduled to hold on September 30, 2016 at the National Stadium, Abuja.

The clergy also advised the Federal Government not to be in a hurry to sell the nation’s national asset over the recession.

He said shortly after his arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) said that the country was not the first to experience economic recession in the world and would soon be out of it as government and stakeholders were brainstorming to proffer solution.

His Words: “We all know that we are passing through a tunnel but by the Grace of God, we’re going to get to the light at the end of the tunnel, and very soon the Lord is going to give us a turn around and there is going to be a change in our nation.

“Other countries also have gone through and come out of recession, and Nigeria is not the first. We strongly believe that God will bring us out as the government and other stakeholders are working on solutions.”

Speaking on planned sales of the nation’s assets to revive the economy, he advised that the federal government to consider all suggestions and make a concrete decision over the current situation.

However, he urged the government to remain patient on the sale of the assets as it would not be the best decision to solve the problem. He added that God would intervene and bring the nation out of it.
