  • Mixed feelings for parents of quadruplets

It was mixed feelings for the family of Evangelist Ibe, following his wife’s delivery of a set of quadruplets at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra State.

While many visit prayer houses and traditional medicine practitioners in search of fruits of the womb, Ibe’s family was blessed with four kids at a go, a blessing he described as ‘overdose.’

The cleric, a native of Mbaitoli, Imo State, attached to St. Barth’s Anglican Church, Umuezeagu Uruagu, Nnewi, said the news of the quadruplets threw him off balance as he was not expecting four at a time.

He expressed concerns over how to settle the hospital bills, feed the babies and take care of some other challenges in view of the economic hardship in the country.

Ibe said, “Immediately after the delivery, somebody came where I was waiting and said to me, congratulations father of four.

“I shouted, Jesus! I was not expecting four at a go. Actually, we were told from the scan conducted in one of the hospitals in Nnewi that the babies were three but, to my greatest surprise, they turned out to be four and that threw me off balance.”

He appealed to the state government and public-spirited individuals to come to his aid to enable him cope with the situation.

Fortunately, intervention came through one of the persons he extended the distress call to:   Chief Louis Carter Onwugbenu, an Nnewi-born industrialist.

Onwugbenu, who requested for the bills on arrival at the NAUTH, could not hold back his generosity as he ended up offsetting bills of over 12 indigent mothers at the maternity ward who were unable to foot their bills.

He also offered scholarship to the quadruplets to study up to tertiary level in any higher institution of their choice, anywhere, under the Louis Carter Foundation, where other indigent students were beneficiaries over the years.

According to him, the gesture, which amounted to over N1.5m, was part of the activities marking his 66th birthday celebrations.

He said, “I didn’t carry out this act of kindness because I’m the richest within my environment but I see it as a responsibility and as a way of appreciating God for his numerous blessings.”

Onwugbenu called on government and other philanthropists to always respond to the cry of the indigent, stressing that, “no one knows who will be what tomorrow.”

Chief Medical Director, NAUTH, Prof. Anthony Igwegbe, expressed appreciation to the philanthropist for his magnanimity, saying he had always been known for such at the hospital.

“You have always reflected your chieftaincy title of “Okpata Ozue Ora Nnewi” (He who utilises his wealth to help others) in your actions,” he added.

Igwegbe prayed for God’s blessing upon his life.

Responding, the Ibes and other beneficiaries of the largesse were full of praise to God and the benefactor, being the instrument used to rescue them from financial embarrassment.

  • Election: Anambra youths protest imposition of wealthy politicians

…drum support for petty trader’s son

Some group of youths in Nnewi, Anambra state on Thursday, staged a peaceful protest against what they called imposition of representatives from rich families in the community on them.

The protesters, under the aegis of Anaedo Concerned Youth Movement, Nnewi Academic Congress and Greater Nnewi Youth Ambassadors/ Graduate Partners, insisted that one Mr. Nonso Smart Okafor, the son of an akara (bean cake) frier would represent them in the State Assembly.

They said the choice of Okafor vying under the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was informed by his poor background, insisting that he would fight for the interest of poor masses if elected.

Leader of Anaedo Concerned Youth Movement, Comrade Echehome said the protest was informed by a perceived plan by an influential man in the town to impose one of the richest men on the community.

He said, “We are on this solidarity rally because we learnt that a business mogul in the industrial city wants to influence the electorate to vote for a candidate from a rich family to represent the community in the State House of Assembly “through cash and carry style of electoral process.”

“It would amount to injustice and disservice to Nnewi community to impose an unpopular candidate on the people just because he could not foot the bill.”

Echehome insisted that the youths were comfortable with the APGA candidate who they noted had made the community proud in various capacities as a youth leader.

According to him, there would be no hope for people of poor background in Nnewi in politics if any form of godfatherism was allowed.

“We are going to set a bad precedent if we allow any form of godfatherism to be part of Nnewi political ideology and representation.

“We are the youths of this community and we know who is who and nobody should tell us the choice to make.

“We are the leaders of tomorrow in Nnewi and we should be allowed to make our choice and not imposition,” he said.

Also speaking, Leader of Nnewi Youth Ambassadors/ Graduate Partners, Mr Ifeanyi Nwajide said the revolution was born out of the youths’ disgust to imposition of unpopular representative that had crippled their expected quality representation.

Addressing the protesters, Senior Special Adviser to Governor Obiano, Hon Nnamso Nwafor Orizu assured them that the State government was behind the APGA candidate for the State Assembly election despite threats and persuasion to support a candidate against their wish.

The protesters displayed placards with various inscriptions like: we need personality, not party; Nwa nwayi n’eghe akara ka anyi choro (we want the son of akara frier); Nnewi youths stand for Smart; no need for godfatherim and even okada riders want Smart; justice for the poor in Anaedo, and many other inscriptions.

The solidarity rally took the youths and okada riders to Nkwo Triangle, Nkwo Nnewi markets, streets of Nnewi community and the palace of the traditional ruler of the community, His Royal Highness, Igwe Kenneth Orizu III with positive responses from the traders and larger Nnewi community members that they supported a poor woman’s son to represent them.

  • ‘Disregard Okada ban rumour’

The Anambra State government has debunked rumours that it plans to restrict operations of commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okada in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba, described the rumour as politically-motivated.

According to him, the government would never contemplate such.

He said: “There is no iota of truth in the rumours that the government plans to ban okada in Nnewi. The government has always made it clear that Nnewi would not be affected when the restriction order on the use of commercial motorcycles in Onitsha and Awka was made mid last year.”

According to the commissioner, the rumour ban was started by politically-exposed persons participating in the elections. He advised politicians to insist on the truth while passing information to their followers so as not to mislead them.

  • How I nearly lost my baby to a suspected child trafficker — Nursing mother

The joy of a 22-year-old Happiness Mmadu, knew no bounds when she was delivered of a set of twins at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State on January 25, 2019 . However, but for the quick intervention of nurses at the hospital, she would have lost one of the babies to a suspected child trafficker.

It was said that Happiness had no one around her in the hospital to assist her in taking care of the twin babies.

According to Happiness, the suspected child trafficker, Dorothy Sunday, a 35-year-old woman, had approached her in the hospital and offered to assist her with some chores since she had nobody around to assist her.

“Dorothy was at the ward looking after my babies, while I was outside washing my clothes. I was still washing when I was told that Dorothy had put one of the babies in her handbag and was moving out.

“I didn’t know she had such an ulterior motive when she approached me. If I had known, I wouldn’t have taken that risk,” she lamented.

The Nation learnt that the suspected child trafficker, a native of Izzi in Ebonyi State, reportedly gained entrance into the hospital’s maternity ward around 5pm that fateful day, while the mother of the baby was away.

One of the medical personnel in the hospital, who preferred anonymity, told our correspondent, that Dorothy came to the maternity ward penultimate Wednesday, claiming that the 22-year-old woman was her younger sister.

He said luck, however, ran out on her when a nurse moved into the ward to dress the bed where the twins were lying, only to discover that one of the babies was no longer there.

He stated: “The nurse raised the alarm and other nurses at the ward went after Dorothy, who was already approaching the exit gate of the hospital.

“The nurses searched her handbag and discovered that Dorothy hid the baby inside the bag. The baby was taken from her and an angry crowd pounced on her, beat her up and stripped her.

“She (Dorothy) was about being set on fire when policemen from the Central Police Station, Nnewi, arrived at the scene and took her away.”

The medical personnel further revealed that the mother was invited by the police for further interrogations.

“The police also arrested Happiness, the mother of the twins, who said she hails from the Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State,” he said.

But speaking with our correspondent, Dorothy denied the allegation, claiming that Happiness had asked her to come and take the male baby so she can raise money to pay the N200,000 hospital bill.

She said: “My name is Dorothy Sunday from Izzi in Ebonyi State. I am a trader at the Relief Market, Onitsha. Happiness called me and told me that she had been delivered of twins through caesarean section.

“She (Happiness) was billed over N200,000. She told me that she wanted to sell one of the babies to raise money for the hospital bill and also to take care of herself.

“She said her parents were not aware that she was pregnant in the first place. She also said that she had no one to help her.”

A nurse in the hospital said Happiness was delivered of the babies on January 25, and was discharged on Tuesday, January 29, 2019.

The nurse explained that Happiness remained in the hospital till Wednesday when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Anthony Igwuegbe, reportedly requested the police to release the nursing mother so she could take care of her twin babies, who were at the custody of the nurses.

He, however, insisted the principal suspect, Dorothy, remained with the police pending the outcome of their investigation.

Igwuegbe, who visited the suspects at the police station, however, doubted the claims that the mother of the twins actually conspired with the suspect to sell the babies.

He said: “Police investigators are yet to establish whether the mother of the twins actually conspired with the suspect to sell the babies or not.

“The mother of the twins couldn’t have been so keen to raise money for hospital bill when she was not yet ready for discharge from the hospital as was rumoured.”

Igwuegbe said the hospital’s management had increased the number of security officers in the hospital who would be stationed in all the wards.

He added that the hospital was holding security meetings to devise more ways of improving the security of the hospital.

Police spokesman, Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said the baby was recovered in good condition.

Mohammed said: “At about 5.50 pm, police detectives attached to the Central Police Station, Nnewi, arrested one Dorothy Sunday, 35 years, from Izzi in Ebonyi State.

“The suspect sneaked into the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, and stole a five-day-old twin baby boy at the maternity ward of the hospital when the mother of the baby, one Happiness Mmadu, 22 years, from Uruagu, Nnewi, went to the hospital’s compound to wash her clothes.”

Mohammed said the suspect would be charged to court after investigation.

The PPRO also dismissed the claim that the mother of the twins was involved in the baby theft, assuring that it would leave no stone unturned in establishing the facts behind the crime.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders Foundation ( HURIJE), Dede Uzor Uzor, described the incident as unfortunate and regrettable.

  • NFVCB takes training to Port Harcourt, Nnewi

After opening its 2019 workshop series in Lagos, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has taken its roadshow to the South-South and South-East zones of the country, making stops in Port Harcourt and Nnewi last week.

In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the programme, tagged ‘Media Literacy Capacity Building On Film Classification & Empowerment For Youth’ took place from January 15 to16, 2019 at the Algate Hotel, an exercise facilitated by Hon. Boma Goodhead in the Asari Toru/Akuku Toru Federal Constituency.

Participants had a great time interacting with veteran actress and youth advocate, Hilda Dokubo, a daughter of the soil who helmed the talks on Film Classification.

Dokubo spoke with the most familiar references, language, gags and slangs of Rivers people.

“I’m going to make it as interactive as possible,” she began, as she threw a question that set the ball rolling. “When you buy a film, how many of you flip to the back jacket to see the Classification Symbol? She asked.

    None responded in the affirmative.

“So, that’s a problem,” she declared.

Enumerating some of the categories of classification, Dokubo explained that there was the need to adhere strictly to the rules.

“If there is a breach of classification rule, there is a problem. The problem is however not for the filmmaker but for the person that allowed the breach, because classification plays the role of informing, plays the role of healing and places responsibility on everyone, including the producer and adults.”

She advocated special class for movies that encourage good virtues in people as well as those that protect the gender.

The actress who frowned at stereotype contents in Nollywood movies pointed out that as a way of changing the narrative, producers must desist from stories that portray the police as bribe collectors, soldier as civilian beaters, the girl-child doing the home chores while the boy-child plays football, as well as movies that portray career woman as endangering their home and marriage, while the full-time housewife is seen as the ideal women.

In Nnewi, the industrial nerve of the South East geo- political zone, it was a gathering of notable stakeholders in the creative industry from Nnewi North/South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituencies.

The event which held on Thursday, January 17, 2019, was an empowerment workshop for youths in the movie and entertainment industry from that area. They include actors, script writers, movie producers and directors, marketers, costumiers, editors and other crew members within the movie production chain.

In his opening remarks, Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas urged participants to avail themselves of this rear opportunity to carve a niche for themselves within the creative industry. He noted that the essence of the training was; to develop participants’ interest and understanding of classification; make participants ambassadors of film classification by letting their children know what to watch and watch not to watch; and assist in lobbying policy makers on important classification recommendations.

In a bid to create a solid foundation for the participants, NFVCB’s Zonal Coordinator, South-East, Mr. Hubert Odeh presented a talk on the Rudiments of Classification, giving brief background history and workings of the Board.

Responding on behalf of participants, Chief Ossy Affason of Ossy Affason Distribution Company encouraged filmmakers to always take advantage of such golden opportunities to develop themselves, while urging those within the creative industry to close ranks in order to build a virile and formidable industry.

High point of the workshop was the distribution of grants to participants by the Executive Director of NFVCB.
