Birthday boy Aluo wants community ownership of  NNL clubs

Chairman of Nigeria National League (NNL), George Aluo, believes community-based ownership of clubs would bolster  the development of the game in the country even as he expressed fulfilment as a professional journalist and as a sports administrator on his birthday anniversary.

Aluo  who marks  his anniversary today (April 12) , said he is humbled by the blessings of God on his life consequently, he will continue to serve him devotedly as a Christian.

“I’m a destiny child born on the day a bomb exploded in my village’s market square, Umuohiagu, in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State during the Nigeria/ Biafra civil war that killed  over 300 people,” Aluo recalled. “On that day, according to my mother’s account, it was not up to 15-20 minutes  after she left that place with my umbilical cord because there was no operational hospital then; carrying my elder sister on her back and my elder brother on her head in a basin that the bomb exploded.

“ So, I must thank God and continue to glorify his name for attaining my new age in good health and sound mind.”

Meanwhile,  the chairman of the NNL has expressed satisfaction with the successes recorded by the country’s second tier league since he took over.

He advocated  that government hands off running football club sides, arguing that clubs will be better managed by private individuals and communities as it is done in other climes.

“It’s unfortunate that governments are still managing professional club sides in this country, and our football can never grow with government ownership of clubs. All we need to do and encourage is to have community-based clubs and private ownership of club sides, and things will begin to change.

“When you look at Remo Stars that’s privately owned, you will discover that the club is well managed without government subvention. Even at the NNL, Sporting Supreme flies their players to match venues, and yet it’s owned by an individual. So, we must discourage government involvement in our football.”

While appreciating the Chairman of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, for the opportunity given to him to serve, Aluo has identified paucity of funds as the greatest challenge facing his board just as he appealed to corporate organisations to take interest in NNL to make the country’s lower league stronger and attractive.

“I must continue to express my appreciation to Alhaji Gusau for finding me worthy to serve as NNL chairman and a board member of the NFF.

“My appeal is that corporate organizations should come to our aid and do what GTI is doing for the NPFL. We’re not saying they should give us money to put in our pockets, let them take care of referees indemnity and once this is done, the referees will not be intimidated but rather be at their best and it will now be possible for teams to be winning on the road as is presently being witnessed in the NNL” he noted.

Aluo upbeat as NNL second stanza successfully  begins

Nigeria National League ( NNL) Chairman, George Aluo , has expressed satisfaction with the performance of teams and match officials  as  the second stanza of the league kicked off last Friday,  saying that the results posted so far showed  marked progress in the league.

The second stanza of the league kicked off in Adamawa and Kebbi respectively on Friday with  matches  at  other conferences on Saturday .

Aluo noted  that the fair officiating witnessed so far which resulted in teams getting results on the road, was  an indication that the league board under his watch is getting it right.

“I want to say that I’m happy with what is happening in the NNL since the second stanza commenced on Friday. Reports indicate  that the referees are doing a good job and the fact that Sporting Supreme recorded an away win in Adamawa and the draw in Awka by Gateway show that it’s no longer business as usual and we’ll continue improving the league,” he said.

While  urging  the referees to be up and doing, Aluo warned  that the board will not hesitate to sanction any match official that is found wanting just as he appealed to fans not to do anything that will bring the game to disrepute.

“I want to advise the referees to be on the same page with the NNL board and handle the whistle without fear or favour so that the successes we’ve recorded since the first stanza will be sustained. It’s equally important I advise the fans to exercise patience with the league board and avoid any act capable of bringing the game to disrepute.”

Meanwhile, Aluo  has commended the  Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)  president,  Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, for his support to the NNL board since they assumed office, promising him that they will achieve the mandate given to them to make the second tier league the best of its kind in Africa.
