AYCF commends FG, NNPC for reviving Port Harcourt Refinery

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the federal government of Nigeria and the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) under the exemplary leadership of Mele Kyari on the operational status of the Port Harcourt Refinery.

AYCF in a statement by its President General Yerima Shettima said, the remarkable achievement marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s oil industry and heralds a new era of growth, sustainability, and hope for millions of citizens across the nation.

“The recent commencement of crude oil processing at the Port Harcourt Refinery, with an impressive installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, represents a significant milestone in our collective journey towards self-sufficiency in petroleum products.

“The refinery’s capacity to load 200 trucks daily with locally refined products is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the Federal Government and the NNPC in revitalizing critical national infrastructure that has long been dormant”.

He noted that for years, the Port Harcourt Refinery has stood as a symbol of Nigeria’s potential in the oil sector, yet it has faced numerous challenges that impeded its operational efficiency, adding that the revival of the refinery is not merely an operational success; it is a beacon of hope that demonstrates what can be achieved when vision, determination, and strategic planning converge.

The AYCF said it recognized the tireless efforts of the Federal Government and the NNPC in overcoming the obstacles that have hindered the refinery’s functionality, and we commend their unwavering resolve in bringing this vital asset back to life.

“The implications of this development extend far beyond the immediate benefits of increased local production. With the refinery now operational, Nigeria is poised to reduce its reliance on imported petroleum products, a move that will enhance our economic sovereignty and contribute to the stabilization of fuel prices across the nation.

“This is particularly crucial in light of the global fluctuations in oil prices and the economic challenges that many Nigerians have faced in recent years. Furthermore, the revival of the Port Harcourt Refinery is expected to create numerous job opportunities for our youth, thereby addressing the pressing issue of unemployment that has plagued our nation”.

The AYC further believed that empowering our youth through job creation is essential for fostering a sense of purpose and belonging in society. The operationalization of the refinery not only promises immediate employment opportunities but also paves the way for the development of a skilled workforce that can contribute to the growth of other sectors in the economy.

Additionally, the AYCF acknowledged the environmental significance of reviving the Port Harcourt Refinery. With modernized operations and adherence to best practices in environmental management, the refinery has the potential to minimize the ecological impact associated with petroleum refining. This aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable development and responsible resource management, which are vital for preserving our planet for future generations.

In light of these developments, the AYCF called upon all stakeholders in the Nigerian oil and gas sector to rally behind this initiative. It is imperative that we foster a collaborative approach that encourages innovation, investment, and transparency within the industry. We urge the Federal Government and the NNPC to continue engaging with local communities and stakeholders to ensure that the benefits of the refinery’s revival are felt across all strata of society.

“In conclusion, the AYCF once again commends the Federal Government and the NNPC under the leadership of Mele Kyari for their remarkable efforts in reviving the Port Harcourt Refinery. We look forward to witnessing the positive impact this development will have on our economy, our youth, and the future of our great nation”.

NBA commends Tantita, NNPC in fight against oil theft

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by President Afam Osigwe, SAN, has commended Tantita Security Services and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for their ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and increase oil production in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region.

During a recent visit to the Niger Delta, Osigwe and members of the NBA’s National Executive Council (NEC) engaged with key stakeholders, including Tantita’s chairman, Government Tompolo, while visiting Gbaramatu Kingdom. This tour aimed to assess firsthand the challenges posed by oil theft and the impact on local communities.

Tompolo reported that his security personnel faced attacks while apprehending oil thieves in the Port Harcourt creeks.

He urged the NBA to support their efforts, emphasizing the economic crisis facing the country.

“If we are not careful, we will not have resources to undertake meaningful projects. We need your help in the legal aspect of these arrests,” he said.

Osigwe praised Tantita for its commitment to protecting oil infrastructure and increasing production from 1.8 million barrels per day to 2 million barrels per day.

He called for enhanced collaboration between private security firms and government agencies in the fight against oil theft.

However, Tompolo highlighted ongoing challenges, particularly with the Nigerian Navy, which he claimed has refused to share intelligence or collaborate effectively with Tantita.

He expressed concern over threats to his life due to his company’s efforts to eradicate oil theft, stating, “Many key players in the oil industry want me dead for my commitment to this cause.”

Osigwe acknowledged the importance of addressing oil theft, stating, “If oil production increases, it benefits all of us, enabling the government to meet the needs of the people. We must protect our commonwealth from those who seek to exploit it.”

The NBA’s visit also aimed to understand the hardships faced by oil-producing communities, with Osigwe noting that these areas often bear the brunt of environmental degradation without reaping the economic benefits of oil wealth.

He emphasised the need for infrastructural support from the federal government, echoing the sentiments of the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oboro-Gbaraun II, who called for the establishment of a Magistrate Court in the region.

“The government must come closer to us and fulfill its obligations,” the monarch stated. “Gbaramatu stands for peace and will continue to advocate for harmony in the Niger Delta.”

The NBA’s engagement in the Niger Delta underscores the association’s commitment to addressing critical issues related to oil theft, community welfare, and environmental protection in Nigeria.

NNPC staff ask judge to hand off case over alleged bias

Staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited have demanded that Justice Charles Agbaza of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recuse himself from a case over the leadership in the NNPC Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

The request is contained in an application filed by 15 members of the cooperative society through their lawyer, Ibrahim Idris (SAN).

On Thursday, Idris informed the court about the application filed by his clients when the case, marked: FCTHC/ABJ/CV/2640/2024 came up.

The applicants are asking the judge to recuse himself, stating they were not comfortable in his ability to resolve the leadership dispute, objectively.

They alleged that some of the interim orders the judge made in the matter reflected his bias against them.

The applicants, who are defendants in the substantive suit, said they “have lost total and complete faith and confidence in the ability of the presiding judge in this matter to continue to entertain this suit and serve justice without bias.

“The conduct of the presiding judge during the hearing of this suit, and particularly judging from the nature of the orders of the presiding judge so far in the suit, it only points to one impeachable conclusion that the defendants are not likely to access justice in this honourable court hence the request that the presiding judge recuse himself from further presiding over this suit.”

The applicants added the court had on October 3, while there was a contention between two lawyers over who was validly briefed to represent the Cooperative Society (16th defendant), ordered one Mr. Lekan Ogunbayo to appear to clarify who he had instructed as the President of the Management Committee of the Cooperative, to defend it in the matter.

The said: “The fulcrum of the substantive suit principally revolves around whether the tenure of the Management Committee led by Mr. Ogunbayo (which had been removed by the Congress of the Association as at then) was subsisting.

“The status quo ante bellum was that an interim Management Committee led by the 2nd and 3rd defendants as the President and Secretary, respectively, had been appointed by the Congress of the 16th defendant and indeed, had been performing the functions of their offices, hence the challenge of the said decision by Claimants before this honourable court.

“The decision of the court ordering the appearance of the said Mr. Ogunbayo in the circumstance, had prejudged the suit at the interlocutory stage.

“Furthermore, the order made by the court on 10th October 2024, directing that the interim order of injunction made on the 30th of May, 2024, shall abide pending the hearing of the consolidated applications and substantive suit without hearing the defendants on whether or not it is suitable to grant an injunction in the circumstance, amounts to a denial of fair hearing of the defendants.

“The decision of the honourable court to extend the interim order of injunction in the circumstance without hearing the other side amounts to a perversion of justice,” the applicants said.

Lawyer to the plaintiffs, George Ibrahim (SAN) disclosed his intention to withdraw a contempt charge his clients initiated against the Director,  Human Resources Department of the NNPCL, Mrs. Fatima Yakubu, accused of flouting the interim orders earlier issued in the case by the court.

Ruling, Justice Agbaza said he was aware of the application and subsequently adjourned till November 8 to hear all the pending applications in the case.

Plaintiffs in the case are four aggrieved staff of the NNPC – Eze Onwuneme, Chamberlin Ajagba, Alhaji Ibrahim Yakubu and Bello Mohammed Garba – who said they are also contributors to the NNPC Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

Onwuneme, Ajagba, Yakubu and Garba are, in the main suit, among others, querying the running of the group’s affairs.

Listed as defendants in the suit are Engr Josiah Omole, Udo Iboro, Ituah Aikhena, Osondu Ibeji, Farouk Achimugu, Prince Etuwewe, Nura Bello, Micheal Adejoh, Sambo Abdulaziz and Vincent Orji.

Others are Saint Kamvene, Braimoh Sunday Joseph and Galadima Immanuel, Engr Iliya Yusuf, Musa Garba Abubakar, and the NNPC Ltd Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Abuja.

They equally want an order of injunction restraining the 1st defendant (Omole) and his agents from recognizing or giving effect to the 2nd to 15th defendants as President, General Secretary, and members of the Management Committee of the group.

The plaintiffs want an order of perpetual injunction restraining the 2nd- 15th defendants and their agents or servants from parading themselves as members of the Management Committee of the cooperative society.

Senior NNPC official faces contempt proceedings for allegedly flouting court orders

A senior official of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Mrs Fatima Yakubu is to appear in court soon to answer to contempt proceedings currently pending against her for allegedly flouting court orders.

Mrs. Yakubu, who is described as the Director of Human Resources at the NNPC, was alleged to have flouted orders made by Justice Charles Agbaza of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in a suit marked: FCTHC/ABJ/CV/2640/2024.

Justice Agbaza issued the orders in a ruling on an ex-parte application and restrained 14 leaders of the NNPC Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society from parading themselves as officers of the cooperative society.

The judge also restrained the 14 individuals from taking any step in respect of the leadership of the Cooperative Society or holding themselves out as officers of the group.

The Human Resources Director was alleged to have, despite the subsistence of the court’s orders, made the portal of NNPC staff available for the restrained officials of the Cooperative Society to conduct a purported election for officers of the group.

The contempt proceedings were initiated by four aggrieved staff of the NNPC – Eze Onwuneme, Chamberlin Ajagba, Alhaji Ibrahim Yakubu, and Bello Mohammed Garba – who said they are also contributors to the NNPC Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

When the case came up last Thursday, the contempt proceedings could not be attended to owing to a disagreement between two lawyers – Anthony Malik (SAN) and Andrew Eche – on who to represent the cooperative society.

Upon a request by Malik, Justice Agbaza adjourned till October 17 before which the two lawyers are to agree on who should represent the cooperative society.

“At this juncture, the leadership of the NAVOTTFG emphatically commends and applauds the Managing Director of NNPC Trading, Mr Lawal Sade, for his transparent and outstanding performance in service delivery, and for standing tall in the nation’s downstream sector, bringing his wealth of experience by taking major and bold steps to reposition, transform and organise the NNPC trading company to an enviable height that is remarkable before all Nigerians.

Mega station owners seek partnership with NNPC

The Association of Mega Filling Station Owners of Nigeria (AMFSON) has called for a stronger partnership between the association and the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

The Association said it can transport fuel to the 774 local government headquarters in the country at a cheaper rate in order to make the product available to the people at the grass-root levels.

In a statement by the President of AMFSON, Davidson Nwankwo Ukatta, said following a meeting with members of the association in Abuja, the filling stations owned by his members can be found in all the 774 local councils of the country, making it easy for the public to access petroleum products at a cheaper rate.

“There is a need for the management of NNPC and other critical stakeholders in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry to see AMFSON not only as business partners, but as partners in progress in the quest to deliver products to Nigerians at a cheaper and affordable rate.

“AMFSON  is well structured to help make petroleum products available to Nigerians, our members are located across the 774 local councils in the 36 states of the Federation and the federal capital territory (FCT).

“While NNPC Retail filling stations are politically located in the capitals of the 36 states of the Federation and Abuja, AMFSON outlets can be found in multiple numbers in the 774 local councils of the country.

“The locations of AMFSON member outlets makes it possible for Nigerians to readily access petroleum products at a cheaper rate nationwide.

“Therefore there is the need for all critical stakeholders to rally round the association in its bid to make petroleum products available across the country.

“There is also the need for NNPC Limited to deepen its relationship with AMFSON  members as part of strategies to make cheaper petroleum products available to the public.

“AMFSON is the only group that can help NNPC Limited to drive the policy behind the establishment of NNPC Retail Limited.

  • ‘NNPC deserves commendation for its handling of petrol supply’

‘NNPC deserves commendation for its handling of petrol supply’

Ima Niboro, a former spokesperson to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has said Nigerians should commend the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd. for its handling of petrol supply in the country despite many obstacles.

“The NNPC has played a very responsible role, especially under its present leadership,” Niboro said in an interview.

“Since it became a company, it’s been run professionally. But they have gone over and beyond in the things that they have had to do for the nation as it’s the energy supplier of the last resort.

The former presidential spokesperson said the NNPC Ltd. has been “shouldering over N600 per litre on every petrol that we are consuming in this country,”  noting that the landing cost of petrol was about N1250”.

“You know the Petroleum Industry Act made the NNPC as the energy supplier of the last resort, and in fulfilling this role of guaranteeing energy security for the country they absorbed half of the cost of the petrol that you have in your tank for over one year.

“NNPC absorbed over N600 for over a year until it became a problem and they had to cry out that look we are going down,” he said.

“If they were going to operate like a pure company, they would bring petrol at N1250 per litre and tell Nigerians they can’t sell below that. But because of that dint of patriotism, they said, ‘no, this is a company; we have to declare profit, but we also operate in a country, and we have to prioritize the welfare of the people over profiteering’.

Speaking on the coming of the Dangote refinery, Niboro urged billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote to emulate NNPC Ltd. by bearing part of the cost of supplying the product in the interim.

“I also urge our big brother, Dangote, that at this point, it’s a business, but let him not prioritise profit too much. Nigeria has been very kind to him,” he said.

“Let him at this time show pure kindness to Nigerians. If he loses a a couple of billions naira along the line, he would make more billions from diesel, petrochemicals, and the over 5000 other products his refinery is designed to produce and sell to Nigerians and the rest of the world.

“A little bit of sacrifice in this matter will not make him any poorer. He must not prioritise profit at this time.

“In his Bloomberg interview, he noted that petrol is cheaper in Nigeria than in Saudi Arabia, which is the largest producer of crude oil in the world.

“He also said that Saudi people look at it from the perspective that this is what God blessed them with; they should at least have some benefits from it, some kind of subsidy from it. This is also the mindset of Nigerians.

“Nigerians have always felt that this is the thing that we have now. It’s like having vegetables cultivated in your backyard; you won’t pay the same amount of money for it as those that don’t have it. That is the mindset.

“But of course we know that it doesn’t work like that in modern economics. It is because of that NNPC was swallowing up more than half of the cost of a litre. Let Dangote approach this petrol issue with the same mindset.

“His name will be etched in gold, and he won’t even be the poorer for it.”

BREAKING: NNPC to sell Dangote petrol at N1,019/ litre in Borno, N950 in Lagos

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has stated the prices it will sell the petrol lifted from the Dangote Refinery in some States across the nation.

It said it will sell at a price above N1,000 per litre in the far north.

The NNPC spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, disclosed this on Monday, in a statement titled: ‘NNPC Ltd releases estimated Pump Prices of PMS from Dangote Refinery Based on September 2024 Pricing’.

A transaction insider at the NNPCL on Sunday said, supply from Dangote Refinery was at N898 per litre.

But Dangote, in a statement, said the insinuated plant cost per litre of N898 was “misleading and mischievous”.

Reacting to Dangote’s statement, Soneye, confirmed that the price per litre from the refinery is N898.

He said: “If it is not N898, then what is the price? Let them inform Nigerians of the actual cost.

“We have issued Letters of Credit for the product, and there’s an invoice. Let them disclose the price.”

Soneye, in the statement on Monday explained that the price may go for as high as N1,019/litre in places like Borno State and N999.22 in Abuja, Sokoto, Kano, and others.

The lowest price, according to an infographic released by the NNPC, is N950 in Lagos and its environs.

In Oyo, N960 per litre while in Rivers it will be N980 per litre.

“The NNPC Ltd has released estimated prices of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol (obtained from the Dangote Refinery) in its retail stations across the country.

“The NNPC Ltd also wishes to state that, in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, PMS prices are not set by the government, but negotiated directly between parties at an arm’s length,” he stated.

The company explained that the product it loaded on Sunday was paid for in dollars.

“The NNPC Ltd can confirm that it is paying Dangote Refinery in USD for September 2024 PMS offtake, as naira transactions will only commence on October 1, 2024.

“The NNPC Ltd assures that if the quoted pricing is disputed, it will be grateful for any discount from the Dangote Refinery, which will be passed on 100 per cent to the general public,” the statement added.

He stated that the estimated pump prices of PMS were obtained from the Dangote Refinery and will be across NNPC retail stations in the country, based on September 2024 pricing.
