NNPCL advocates patriotism, good morals through Prof. Osofisan’s play

Supporting the staging of Prof. Femi Osofisan’s play “Once Upon Four Robbers” in Abuja on Saturday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) promoted patriotism and good morals.

Speaking with reporters after the show, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, stated that the choice of the play was intended to emphasise that “Change begins with us.”

Soneye urged citizens to live a life of integrity, emphasizing that patriotism is key to building a strong society.

He expressed gratitude to Osofisan, the drama troupe, and the audience, and noted that NNPCL would support future performances whenever necessary.

His words: “We are glad to be part of this. Thank you Prof. Femi Osiofisan. For us in NNPCL, what really made us choose this is you can now see that this stage play emphasizes the fact that change begins with each and every one of us as a citizen.

“You can see that this does not only show patriotism but also promotes morals and for us to live a right life. So, for us as NNPCL, we are encouraging and promoting not only people should have good morals but also to know that as citizens, change begins with us. “Whatever we do in our daily life, we should show a sense of patriotism and a sense of a responsible individual. This is the only way the country can grow and be a good society.

“Thank you very much and enjoy the end of the year and Christmas. We thank you all. Thank you for bringing the show to Abuja.

“We are glad to have you and in the future, we will also support it and any good thing you want to do.”

Meanwhile, Osofisan expressed surprise that several years after he wrote the play, it remains topical and relevant to addressing the issues of robbery, morality, and societal values.

“This play was written many years ago and it is surprising how relevant and still topical it is dealing with the issues of morality, issues of robbery, and issues of values in our society,” he said.

Osofisan added: “The play ends with the audience itself deciding what they want. Everybody must decide for him or herself: takes away from it.”

Asked what informed the making of the play, he recalled it was written many years ago when the country still had public executions for robbers.

Osofisan said the fear of capital punishment never deterred the people as some pickpockets right at the public execution scene.

In his veiled conclusion, he blamed the crime on economic hardship.

He said: “We used to have robbers being executed to deter other robbers or to stop armed robbery.

“But you saw what happened that even at the execution ground some people will even be stealing, pickpocketing. It was necessary to look at what was making people steal. Why were they robbing?

“Is it because they were evil or what? When you look at it, it was more of an economic situation.”

Taraba customers urge NNPCL to extend CNG vending hours

Customers consisting of drivers and park operators have called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to extend the hours of selling the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Taraba state.

The stakeholders made the appeal as the state-owned oil and gas firm took its ongoing Stakeholders’ Sensitization Programme to the state, where drivers and park operators showed significant interest in usage of CNG.

The exercise is part of NNPC’s efforts to increase awareness and core understanding of the oil and gas industry’s role in national development while schooling stakeholders on Efficient use of petroleum products.

Tagged: NNPC & You, the sensitisation campaign got to a flying start at the popular Taraba State Transport Company (TSTC), Park in  Jalingo with commercial vehicle  drivers and park operators commending NNPCL for the introduction of CNG as a viable alternative to petrol.

TSTC Park Manager, Abdullahi Musa while commending the company for the CNG initiative however appealed that the product be made available motorists in the state and called on NNPC Ltd. to extend  hours of operation of Its retail outlets to improve service delivery and eliminate likely queues.

At the Jalingo main motor park, Danjuma Hayatu, called on NNPC Ltd. to enforce existing regulations which prohibits the sale of petrol in kegs and jerry cans noting that though “nobody can buy fuel in cans inside NNPC Retail stations” yet we find people hawking fuel on the  streets of Jalingo.

At the Pullo Motor Park, Ali Salandy Wukari echoed the CNG request and appealed to the NNPC Ltd. to work out a hire purchase arrangement that would enable drivers and vehicle operators have access to the CNG powered vehicles under a pocket friendly approach.

The NNPC Ltd. Team later visited two more  major parks in Taraba namely; The People Choice and NARTO Park where stakeholders’ harped on the need for NNPC Ltd. to sustain the sensitization exercise by making the programme a periodic event and not a one-off activity.

Remarkably, the interest shown by drivers and park operators in CNG is a significant development, as CNG  is adjudged  a cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel option.

The sensitization exercise, which was attended by drivers, commuters, and other stakeholders in the community, featured presentations on the safe and efficient use of petroleum products, as well as the importance of adhering to safety protocols at retail stations.

Just like the earlier exercise in Maiduguri, Borno state, some lucky stakeholders went home with gift items and freebies following raffle draws at various motor parks.

…as firm embarks on safe use of petroleum products sensitization

Stakeholders including drivers and transport owners have called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to establish more retail outlets.

They made the call as NNPCL embarked

a sensitisation programme aimed at increasing awareness and understanding on the efficient and safe use of petroleum products across major cities in Borno state.

Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the NNPC Ltd, Olufemi Soneye said the exercise is an integral part of a nationwide campaign designed to strengthen stakeholders’ participation and engagement in such a way as to promote transparency, foster community engagement, and address public concerns.

During the interactive session, drivers and commuters while commending the management of NNPC Ltd for the organizing the proggramme requested for the establishment of more retail outlets in the state to ease access to cheaper and unadulterated petroleum products which NNPC Retail has on offer.

The stakeholders equally contended that the provision of more NNPC retail outlets would halt the prevailing scenario where motorists and commuters travel long distance from the parks to the nearest fuel station in search of products.

In his own reaction, the park leader of Borno Express, Saminu Yakubu, who spoke on behalf of the drivers in the unit, said the scarcity of retail stations had led to an increase in the price of petroleum products in the state.

“We appreciate the efforts of NNPC Ltd in organizing this sensitization exercise, but we want to use this opportunity to appeal to the company to establish more retail stations in the state,” he stated.

Another Park leader, Muhammadu Dan Inna, who chairs Kano Line in the state, said: “We often have to travel long distances to buy fuel, which is not only stressful but also expensive.”

Having listened to the complaints of stakeholders at the programme, the NNPC Team assured that the company is committed to expanding its retail presence in Borno State in line with its global mandate of ensuring national energy security.

The Team noted that NNPC Ltd had already identified some locations in the state where new retail stations would be established to increase access to petroleum products, adding that the company is committed to ensuring that Nigerians had access to safe and efficient petroleum products.

The sensitization exercise was part of the company’s efforts to educate Nigerians on the importance of safe and efficient use of petroleum products.

The exercise, which was attended by drivers, commuters, and other stakeholders in the community, featured presentations on the safe and efficient use of petroleum products, as well as the importance of adhering to safety protocols at retail stations.

NNPCL proposes 5 LNG plants for Kogi – Senator Natasha

…urges FG to redefine local content for national development

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) is set to establish five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi in 2025.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Local Content, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan disclosed this while speaking at the 13th Annual Practical Nigerian Content (PNC) forum, according to a statement by her Chief Press Secretary Arogbonlo Israel, in Abuja.

The Kogi Central lawmaker said the projects would be flagged off next year, describing them as the largest concentration of such projects in one senatorial district in the country.

Akpoti-Uduaghan said: “I would like to appreciate NNPC and the industry experts who have also considered and humbled us at Ajaokuta Local Government, with the (not too sure if it’s too early to speak about it), establishment of five mini LNG plants which will be flagged off early next year.

“This is actually the largest concentration of such projects in one district in the entire country. Five, not one, two, three, four, but five mini LNG plants will be established in Ajaokuta by God’s grace next year (2025).

“That’s good news for us, good news for Nigeria. So what does that mean? This and many others are just pivotal, it’s important to know that if there’s any place in the country where we should situate a technology hub that will not only drive innovations but talk about the testing and brainstorming around the various kinds of metals and what these metals can do for the industry. It’s just Ajaokuta Local Government,“ she said.

She also emphasised the need for the Federal Government to redefine the Nigerian local content to drive national development.

She stressed that Nigeria must look beyond capacity building to unlock its full potential and claim its place on the global stage.

According to her, Nigerian content implementation must encompass innovation, sustainability, collaboration, and market expansion to drive a holistic transformation across sectors.

“For decades, Nigerian content has been synonymous with the development of local capacity in the Oil and Gas sector.

“We’ve emphasised skills acquisition, education, and infrastructure development, and rightly so.

“These efforts have laid a solid foundation. However, to unlock Nigeria’s full potential and claim our place on the global stage, we must now look beyond capacity building.

“Today, I invite us to broaden our perspective and consider how Nigerian content implementation can encompass innovation, sustainability, collaboration, and market expansion to drive a holistic transformation across sectors,” she said.

She said that for every deep water operation, rigs are utilised and the cheapest rig stands at about $10m while some go as much as $25m.

“What actually makes up a rig? Steel. So, just imagine, count how many rigs you have in Nigerian waters. Imagine if we had those rigs manufactured in-country. That means we would have saved so much money and we would have created so many jobs,” she said.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, however, proposed a comprehensive framework for national development, focusing on creating value, achieving self-reliance, and establishing a legacy of global competitiveness.

“Let’s redefine Nigerian content as more than just the transfer of skills and the localisation of supply chains in the Oil and Gas sector. Instead, we must view it as a comprehensive framework for national development.

Nigerian content should focus on creating value, achieving self-reliance, and establishing a legacy of global competitiveness.

She said: “Nigeria’s challenges – ranging from unemployment to dependence on foreign technology and underutilised resources – demand a more dynamic approach. To pave this new frontier, I propose we focus on four core areas: Policy Refinement and Strategic Enforcement, Building Competitive Ecosystems, Value Chain Optimisation and Global Market Integration

“We have strong policies like the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act and the Petroleum Industry PIA but how do we ensure these policies evolve to meet the demands of a fast-changing global economy?”

Reassuring stakeholders, he reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s investment climate and ensuring the nation remains globally competitive in the oil and gas sector.

  • The NNPCL’s feather on Tinubu’s cap

The NNPCL’s feather on Tinubu’s cap

The last few days have been especially very hectic for the Nigerian President, working at almost break-spine speed to meet targets, get Nigeria sorted in all the ways necessary. You will recall he was out of the country the week before the last one, attending the G20 Leaders Summit in Brazil. He returned very late on Saturday of the upper week to Nigeria and continued with the mission of getting the country sorted right from Sunday, the first day of the week.

You might not have heard much from him directly during the week because he was not seen or heard from in the media, in person, however, he did not fail to achieve what he set out to achieve. As is normal practice, echoes of his actions and directives were heard through his spokesmen and other lieutenants, indicating that even when he was not speaking to the camera for us to see, he was doing things that must be conveyed by those who have the duties of carrying out tasks.

However, in the course of the week, a significant event occurred, which conveyed to Nigerians the import of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s view to leadership; that he is not one for just the accolades, but primarily for results and how the results impact on the people he leads. The old Port Harcourt Refinery, which has been dormant for years (I heard the last time it produced anything was 2018), came back alive on Tuesday, November 26, after a number of failed targeted resumption dates. It was actually becoming a sore point on Nigeria’s governance, especially with the coming on stream of a couple of privately-owned refineries, including Dangote Refinery.

Long story short, one of the four nationally owned refineries, the old Port Harcourt Refinery, one of the two situated in Eleme, Rivers State, came alive, ready to serve the country. The project, which I learned was fitted with cutting-edge technology and, to use the words of the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, installed with entirely new parts, will now load two hundred trucks of assorted products daily.

Now it became interesting and concerning Tinubu because of the role he played. Of course he is President and the buck stops at his table, that could have just been and nothing would still happen; the facility would still be there, decaying further from lack of use activity, past leaders have come and left without anything changing about the refinery. However, the difference with Tinubu was his single-mindedness on seeing that products start getting trucked out of the place. Mind you, all these years that the place has been prostrate, it was servicing only salaries to redundant employees. That was not the President’s vision for any public facility, every man and machine must give back the value for its maintenance.

He was focused on bringing results from this particular facility and the entire sector. When public scrutiny was becoming a distraction, scrutiny about when the refineries on which government, right from former President Muhammadu Buhari, had been spending money, signing agreements, would start production. The NNPCL gave dates a couple of times, which for some reasons never materialised. This was becoming both embarrassing and distracting and there was where the President had to step in to save the day.

“Mr President told me to stop projecting dates, but just focus on ensuring we deliver the project because people are only interested in results”, Kyari revealed to some journalists before the event commenced on Tuesday, rather privately though. With this background in mind, you will understand why he was so profusely thanking and appreciating the President when he was speaking on camera at the ceremony that marked the commencement of production and loading of products last Tuesday.

“We are convinced beyond all doubt that without the support, perseverance, and patience of Mr. President, we would not have achieved this fate and all of us must congratulate him because it is his massive pressure that made us to come to this level”, he said. Tinubu’s intervention and commitment to the success that was celebrated last Tuesday was show of leadership, which he did not fail to relish. He was also not selfish about the sparkles of the glory, he would not take the spotlight alone, he ensured to give credit to his predecessor for his part, not forgetting “the pivotal role of former President Muhammadu Buhari in initiating the comprehensive rehabilitation of all our refineries”.

The week saw the President honouring an invitation by President Emmanuel Macron of France to a state visit, along with his wife, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. Most of his visible activities of the week were the ones he undertook in France. Right from Thursday, President Tinubu had been engaged in series of engagements, including signing of agreements on behalf of Nigeria and participating in an economic forum, which had Nigerian and French businesses.

Read Also: JUST IN: NNPCL reduces petrol price to N1030/l for marketers

The state visit was the first by a Nigerian leader after over two decades and it provided an opportunity for Nigeria to extend its foreign connections, especially for the Tinubu-led administration, which has identified foreign affairs as an avenue to achieve some of its economic goals for the country. However, beyond whatever might be in the visit for Nigeria, France seemed to have a more strategic reason than Nigeria to seek the visit of the largest African democracy, which is a turf it is rather less familiar with. From all indications, France aimed to explore a new connect with the English-speaking spheres of the black continent and where better to start from?

On a lighter note, I think it makes sense to highlight the fact that President Tinubu is contagiously transmitting Nigerianness to those we will all agree are the real Super Powers of the contemporary milieu. Yes, he has made it a very key and deliberate part of his administration’s focus and recovery strategy to ensure we are not isolated, as such kept strengthening diplomatic outreaches and shopping for foreign direct investments.

In the process of achieving these foreign-focused targets, Mr President has also been quietly pushing the ‘Identity Nigeria’ in the way we used to see it only with our culture merchants and young showbiz exports. For example, ‘Afrojams’, which is primarily denominated with songs by Nigerian artistes, has pushed Nigeria out to the world, taking some cultural codes and expressions along as it permeates the wider-world.

It should no longer be strange to us hearing either Ed Sheeran, a British singer/songwriter, sing “Omoge nor be so” in ‘Peru’ with Fireboy DML, or hearing Chris Brown, an American star, sing “the boy nor dey take nonsense” in ‘Hmmm’, a track he did with Burna Boy and featured Davido. Something like Nigeria seizing the world by storm, imprinting its very vivid and colourful cultural identity on the world’s conscience. This has been going on for a while.

In that same trajectory, President Tinubu has in the last few days affected two major world leaders to deviate from their own to adopt our own. It was first the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during his one-day state visit, just before the G20 Summit. Prime Minister Modi, while making his speech at the tete-a-tete, adopted the Yoruba word of affection; ‘oree mi’, meaning ‘my friend’, to refer to his brother-leader, President Tinubu. That, to many Nigerians, especially those who understand or speak Yoruba, was a really profound moment, when a man with a very strong cultural background honoured us as a nation by choosing to speak our tongue.

Then this week, on Thursday evening, to express his value for President Tinubu’s visist, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, switched from his traditional and very widely spoken French tongue to our own pigin on his verified X handle, @EmmanuelMacron, to describe his excitement. Mr Macron said “Na big honor for France, dear President Bola Tinubu @officialABAT, to welcome you for dis State visit as one big partner and friend of today and tomorrow. E still dey sweet me well well as I remember say I be young intern for French Embassy for Nigeria that time”.

Without meaning it, Mr President is fast becoming another cultural export, drawing those who matter to pay attention and learn about our lives as Nigerians. I will not be surprised if President-elect Donald Trump soon starts hustling to be invited to Aso Villa to come try our amala and gbegiri or ofe nssala with pounded yam out, that is because we are cool like that and the world cannot wait to feel us.

In this new week he continues with being busy because he is expected to be heading out for another foreign engagement in South Africa. Let us keep praying for our President to success. His success is our collective ease.

In the wake of the long delay not less than seven missed deadlines, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on Tuesday, November 26, openly disclosed that it had finally brought to life the 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) phase one of the Port Harcourt Refinery, located in Rivers State.

The corporation also noted that the old Port Harcourt Refinery is currently operating at 70 per cent of its installed capacity, with plans to ramp up to 90 per cent.

Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

The NNPC Ltd made this known in reaction to claims, suggesting that the refinery is not producing products.

“The board and management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) express heartfelt appreciation to Nigerians for their support and excitement over the safe and successful restart of the 60,000 barrels-per-day Old Port Harcourt Refinery. This achievement marks a significant step forward after years of operational challenges and underperformance.

“We are, however, aware of unfounded claims by certain individuals suggesting that the refinery is not producing products. For clarity, the Old Port Harcourt Refinery is currently operating at 70 percent of its installed capacity, with plans to ramp up to 90 percent,” Mr Soneye said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the NNPC Ltd said the Port Harcourt refinery had commenced production after a long period of rehabilitation.

The NNPC Ltd said the refinery began truck loading of petroleum products on Tuesday, 26 November.

In its statement Tuesday night, the NNPC said the refinery is producing daily outputs of straight-run gasoline (Naphtha): blended into 1.4 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS or petrol), Kerosene: 900,000 litres, Automotive Gas Oil (AGO or Diesel): 1.5 million litres, Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO): 2.1 million litres and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): additional volumes.

Mr Soneye noted that the refinery incorporates crack C5, a blending component from its sister company, Indorama Petrochemicals (formerly Eleme Petrochemicals), to produce gasoline that meets the required specifications.

According to him, blending is a standard practice in refineries globally, noting that no single unit can produce gasoline that fully complies with any country’s standards without such processes.

“Additionally, we have made substantial progress on the new Port Harcourt Refinery, which will begin operations soon without prior announcements.

“We urge Nigerians to focus on the remarkable achievements being realised under the able and progressive leadership of President Bola Tinubu and to support efforts aimed at delivering more dividends to the nation. Malicious attacks on clear progress only undermine the significant strides made by NNPC Ltd and the country.

“Let us move forward together in building a stronger and more self-sufficient energy sector,” he added.

Soneye while reacting to how the challenges were surmounted noted that, “We partnered with and drew on the wealth of experience from an external party who had carried out commissioning and startup, currently operating and maintaining several refineries. The injection of these additional, highly skilled and competent resources was the game changer. We also identified and mobilised retired NNPC staff who had worked in the refineries, their experience and expertise were useful. We carried out a detailed technical review to understand and identify areas of vulnerabilities; we put a system in place to eliminate and address the bad actors systematically.”

The Group CEO, Engineer Mele Kyari however thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and understanding towards the rehabilitation project and for his persistence to ensure energy security for the country.

Kyari also expressed appreciation to the NNPCL’s Board of Directors and the staff for their support and commitment, which climaxed in the streaming of the refinery.

He commended the contractors for doing a great job in ensuring that the refinery was delivered despite all challenges.

The NNPCL boss also thanked Nigerians for their patience and for the legitimate expectations on the company to deliver on the other refineries.

He said: “We are going to see loading today. I just want to add that without leadership support, you cannot achieve results like this. And we are convinced beyond all doubt that without the support, perseverance, and patience of Mr. President, we would not have achieved this fate.

“And all of us must congratulate him because it is his massive pressure that made us to come to this level. And we are very happy. In retrospect, when Kyari assumed office, NNPC (as then was) was plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and stagnation. However, under his leadership, the corporation has undergone a remarkable transformation. Kyari’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and innovation has been instrumental in driving NNPC’s success.

One of Kyari’s key achievements is the implementation of the Transparency, Accountability, and Performance Excellence (TAPE) agenda. This initiative has ensured that NNPC’s operations are open, transparent, and accountable, thereby restoring public trust and confidence.

Furthermore, Kyari has championed the diversification of NNPC’s revenue streams, investing in gas, power, and renewable energy. This strategic move has not only reduced the corporation’s dependence on crude oil sales but also positioned NNPC for long-term sustainability.

The FY2023 results, for example, are a testament to Kyari’s visionary leadership. The record-breaking net profits and revenues demonstrate NNPC’s potential for growth and profitability. Kyari’s ability to navigate the complex energy landscape, drive innovation, and foster collaboration has been pivotal in achieving this success.

The truth about Alhaji Mele Kyari is that he is a transformative leader who has revolutionized NNPC. His commitment to transparency, innovation, and diversification has positioned the corporation for success. As NNPCL continues to break records and push boundaries, Kyari’s leadership remains the driving force behind this remarkable journey in accentuating President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda for the overall good of the citizenry.
