‘Sponsors of allegations against NNPCL boss playing ethnic card’

Following repeated allegations of pipelines surveillance contract favouritism by the Executive Vice- President (Upstream) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, a group, Niger Delta Grassroots Coalition (NDGC), has described sponsors of the diatribe as playing ethnic card.

In a statement made available to The Nation yesterday, NDGC lambasted those behind Niger Delta Forum for Truth and Justice (NDFTJ), as well as Arewa Intelligentsia Caucus (AIC), sponsored by some persons from the Urhobo nation.

The statement signed by its Coordinator, Prince Edema Collins and Publicity Secretary, Eyikimi Indiamin, said the accusation by the “faceless” groups was an “usurpation and distraction to the current management under Mele Kolo Kyari.

“The unending blackmail against the Executive Vice-President (Upstream), NNPC Ltd, Mrs. Eyesan, is playing a dangerous ethnic card.”

Reacting to the publications in a national daily dated January 29 and 30 by the two groups, NDGC said: “The AIC, which styled itself as a northern socio-political group, tried unsuccessfully to carry out its campaign of calumny and blackmail against the Executive Vice-President (Upstream) of the NNPCL over what it termed ethnic bias and high handedness.

“For the NDFTJ, it was a second publication (barely a week from their first publication) after perceiving the abysmal failure of their first sponsored publication, while for the AIC, it is their first attempt at doing an unsuccessful hatchet job.”

“We have perused the contents of both publications and can conclude that the AIC is merely trying to do a hatchet job for the NDJTF, which has been formed primarily by some elements in the Niger Delta, especially some persons from the Urhobo nation to blackmail the most successful career woman in the history of the NNPC Ltd since its inception over five decades ago.

“As a statement of fact, it is understood that probably because of their naivety and blindness, due to conflict of interest between separating meritocracy from ethnic sentiments, they went overboard by saying Mrs. Eyesan ‘no longer takes directive from her immediate boss’ the GCEO.

“For the record, Mrs. Eyesan has had a perfect relationship with her immediate boss, Malam Mele Kyari, and the entire NNPC Ltd management and this is evident in the fact that she has represented the GCEO at different forums within and outside the shores of Nigeria, especially within the last three weeks, including jointly inspecting the seized crude oil vessel at Oporoza in Warri Southwest.

“Mrs. Eyesan, whose career of over 30 years in both the private and public sectors has seen her rising to her current position as EVP Upstream of the NNPCL, has been an astute, effervescent, clear-sighted, creative, decisive, discerning, innovative, inquisitive, intuitive, observant, quick-witted, resourceful, shrewd, tenacious and sincere professional in her over 30 years career with sterling achievements, which include; midwifing the first ever non-associated gas commercialisation in Nigeria and delivering the renewal of Nigeria’s Deep Water Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) in record time, paving the way for over $10 billion in eco-friendly investments.”

Asserting that the allegations by the groups stemmed from Eyesan’s shrewd and tenacious way of handling affairs, the NDGC said “those pillaging our common wealth may be threatened.”

Stressing that Mrs. Eyesan “will not be cowed to kowtow to the whims and caprices” of the naysayers, the NDGC urged the Arewa group to channel its energy towards ensuring security in the North, just as it called on the Arewa Consultative Forum and the Northern Elders Forum “to call the leadership of the AIC (if they exist) to order as their unguarded utterances do not bode well for the nation.”

    Allegations against NNPCL boss dismissed

A group under the aegis of Niger Delta Women for Change (NDWC) has dismissed allegations of oil pipeline surveillance contracts racketeering by the Executive Vice President (Upstream) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan.

Describing the accusations as “baseless,” NDWC President, Esiri Ikomoni, speaking at a news conference in Warri, Delta State, rejected calls for her removal over the development.

Flanked by Oritsemisan Juliet and Sophia Tamaralayefa, the group’s secretary and public relations officer, she said the allegations against Mrs. Eyesan did not align with her track record of professionalism and ethical conduct, adding that “NNPCL remains committed to fostering an environment of transparency and accountability.

“NNPCL adheres to a strict and transparent procurement process, ensuring that contracts are awarded based on merit, competitiveness and compliance with all relevant regulations.

“Mrs. Eyesan has consistently demonstrated her commitment to ethical practices, promoting a level- playing field for all stakeholders involved in the procurement process.”

Urging the public and the media to exercise caution in spreading unverified information and to await the outcome of official investigations into the allegations, she expressed confidence that truth would prevail.

“In the face of baseless and malicious attacks, Mrs. Eyesan, the esteemed Executive Vice President (EVP) of Nigerian Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), stands resilient, determined to reframe the narrative surrounding her dedicated service and outstanding achievements.

“As a key strategist of one of Africa’s biggest companies, she led teams that developed corporate strategy, influenced government policies, regulations, laws, while orchestrating commercial agreements (including infrastructure development for local and multinational projects),” Ikomoni said.

She said the recent attempts to undermine EVP’s contributions have been identified as not only malicious, but also fuelled by tribalistic blackmail.

“In response to these attacks, the EVP remains steadfast in her dedication to the principles of professionalism and inclusivity. Her commitment to advancing the energy industry, irrespective of tribal affiliations, stands as a testament to her vision for a unified and prosperous Nigeria,” the group’s president added.

    • Kyari insists no public funds withheld

Global transparency body, Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), has scored the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) very high in its latest global assessment.

According to a statement by Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Ltd Olufemi O. Soneye, this was disclosed by EITI’s Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Bady Baldé, during a visit by an EITI delegation to the Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPC Ltd, Mr. Mele Kyari, in Abuja on Thursday.

Baldé who said the delegation’s visit was to communicate the group’s findings in its recent global assessment to the company, said NNPC Ltd fared very well among companies in the same category, adding that only Equinox of Norway fared better than NNPC Ltd in the assessment.

He, however, said there was still room for NNPC Ltd to improve, stressing that compliance with global EITI standards would help boost the company’s credibility. The EITI boss also urged NNPC Ltd to remain engaged to play an active role in its Nigerian unit,  the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

Earlier in his welcome remarks, Kyari highlighted some of the key changes in the operations of the NNPC Ltd since its transformation into a commercially focused limited liability company in 2021.

He acknowledged that the NNPC Ltd.’s partnership with EITI/NEITI has made it a much more reliable company.

He, however, expressed disappointment with NEITI for going public with its report that NNPC Ltd failed to remit some monies into the Federation Account instead of seeking clarification on any perceived gap in its assessment.

He explained that the NNPC Ltd was holding no public funds back and that what NEITI reported as non-remittance was what was due to the company as payment for taking the burden of fuel subsidy on behalf of the Federal Government.

He disclosed that NNPC Ltd would have released its Audited Financial Statement (AFS) for 2022 since June 2023 but could not do so because it had no substantive Board of Directors at that time, adding that the AFS will be published on the company’s website in the next few days.

On his part, the Executive Secretary of NEITI, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, called for the reconstitution of the NNPC/NEITI Joint Committee on Reconciliation, stressing that the committee could help in straightening out any grey areas.

Relocate NNPCL, NIMASA, NPA to Niger Delta, Nabena begs Tinubu

Former member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena, Wednesday, January 24, implored President Bola Tinubu to approve the relocation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to the Niger Delta region.

He also asked for the relocation of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to the Niger Delta area.

The federal government had indicated interest in moving part of CBN and FAAN to Lagos State for the efficiency of its activities.

The development has however generated a lot of debates in support and against it, especially by the Northern elite and leaders.

Reacting to the move to relocate the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to Lagos, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, the former APC deputy national publicity secretary also said that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should be moved to Benue State where agricultural produce is in abundance.

The APC chieftain said: “If the efficiency of these agencies is the main reason for the plan to relocate them to Lagos State, we from the Niger Delta are also asking that the NNPCL, NIMASA, NPA and others will be more effective in either Bayelsa, Rivers or Delta states.

“In the same way, the Federal Ministry of Mine and Steal should be moved to Kogi state where we have the Ajaokuta Steal for efficiency.

“I also believe that the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment should either be relocated to Kano or Anambra states where trade is done in high proportion. In the same way, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture should be taken to Benue State, the food basket of the Nation.”

According to Nabena, the issue of oil companies relocating to the oil-producing Niger Delta region had been debated severally in the Nigerian Senate with the companies not heeding the calls.

“The Senate had asked International Oil Companies (IOCs) to relocate their headquarters to the Niger Delta region to fast-track the host communities economic development but some powerful interests in Lagos are preventing this for their selfish interests.”

In its Twitter handle, which announced the expression of interest, the NNPCL based the decision on its bid to ensure reliability and sustainability towards meeting the nation’s fuel supply and energy security obligations.

“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is seeking to engage reputable and credible Operations & Maintenance (O&M) companies to operate and maintain one of its refineries, Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC), to ensure reliability and sustainability towards meeting the nation’s fuel supply and energy security obligations,” said the state-owned oil firm.

Today, we have kept those commitments,” Kyari stated.

Skymark Energy & Power Ltd chairman salutes NNPCL GCEO Kyari on birthday

The Chairman of Skymark Energy and Power, Alhaji Muhammad Saleh Hassan, has saluted the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mallam Mele Kyari on his birthday.

While felicitating the longest-serving CEO of the NNPCL who is also the first GCEO of the nation’s oil conglomerate, Hassan also lauded President Bola Tinubu for acknowledging Kyari’s sterling performance in a birthday message to him.

In a statement in Abuja on Monday, Hassan who urged Kyari to do more, highlighted some of his numerous achievements.

He said: “Kyari’s track record performance are humongous. Before  July 7, 2019, when he assumed the position of GCEO, the company had been in a near comatose, following  challenges such as oil pipeline vandalism, corruption, incessant oil theft, low production levels and the lack of transparency. But through his professionalism, patriotism and doggedness, he proffered solutions to them all.

“Through his initiatives, he transformed the NNPC from a loss status to a profitable entity in 2020 when, for the first time in its 44 years history, NNPCL declared a profit after tax of N287 billion. This figure later increased to N674 billion in 2021. The profit has since hit trillion naira capacity since then.

“Also through his management skills, the corporation has been witnessing increase in crude oil production.

“His  active roles in the passage of Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) by former president, Muhammadu Buhari,  on August 16, 2021 guaranteed the rebirth of the oil company as the rejuvenated NNPCL.

“The ongoing rehabilitation of the nation’s three refineries in Warri, Kaduna and Port Harcourt, is also an outcome of Kyari’s initiative and commitment to find solution to the perennial fuel scarcity and price hike in the country.

“He was also instrumental in the removal of petrol subsidy by the Federal Government as announced on May 29, 2023, by Tinubu’s administration. The initiative has started yielding dividends in appreciable proportions.

“Kyari  is also  the first NNPC’s CEO to go all the way to the creeks in the Niger Delta to monitor oil theft and pipeline vandalisation. His war against crude oil theft and illegal refineries have led to a significant increase in oil production.

“This doggedness has curbed oil theft through the introduction of Saudi Aramco’s model, using video surveillance to monitor pipelines carrying crude oil from wells to flow stations in the Niger Delta.

“With his investment-friendly interest in the oil and gas sector, Kyari ensured that  the NNPCL secured $7 billion fresh investments from India for Nigeria’s petrochemical industry. The deal was sealed when he  accompanied President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to India.

“Kyari’s contributions to national development and economic prosperity has gone beyond the NNPCL as the company, last year, secured a $3 billion facility from Afreximbank to enable the Federal Government  stabilise the foreign exchange market and boost the value of the naira against the dollar.

“Under his administration, the NNPCL, last year, sealed a deal with Fox Petroleum Group to obtain $7.5 billion dollars to overhaul its operations across the upstream, mainstream and downstream petroleum sector.

“During Kyari’s administration, the NNPCL  signed an MOU last year with a Chinese company to develop an LNG project that would deliver gas to industries nation wide to guarantee efficient supply of LNG with a view to delivering on President Tinubu’s gas and power aspiration across the country.”

Hassan, who lauded Kyari’s unalloyed commitment, integrity, character and passion, urged him to keep steering the wheels of the company in the direction of excellence and success in fulfilment of the aspirations of the masses.

“You have the capacity. You have all it takes. You have the passion. You have demonstrated integrity, resilience, perseverance and goodwill in managing the nation’s oil industry. With the testament of the president’s message to you as you celebrate your birthday today, it’s crystal-clear that not only him but also the whole nation still reposes confidence in you to do more. I encourage you to maintain your midas touch and your indefatigable capacity with the hope that excellence shall remain your second name throughout your tenure at the NNPCL,” Hassan said.

Hassan described the president as a man of goodwill who cherishes credibility, integrity, quality, result and track record performance whenever he notices them among any technocrat that he rightly put in position.

“It is in this spirit that he has graciously commended Kyari in his birthday message to him as the boss of the  nation’s oil giant celebrates his birthday today,” Hassan stressed.

The Skymark Energy and Power Ltd boss added that Kyari’s commendation was well deserved, having unarguably demonstrated capacity with pungent results in diverse ways at the NNPCL with a midas touch.

Hassan noted that Tinubu’s acknowledgement of Kyari’s performance and commendation, would surely encourage him to do more and thanked him (the president) for the recognition.

“The president is a leader that has passion for performance and result, especially because he himself is passionate about running a credible government that could bequeath dividends of democracy to the people. It’s against this backdrop that he has lauded Kyari on the occasion of his birthday. Obviously, he would keep getting the desired results,” Hassan noted.

Recall that the president had commended the diligence, passion, and expertise the foremost geologist brings to tasks as one of the longest-tenured chief executives in the history of Africa’s most valuable energy company in a birthday message to Kyari signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale.

“Mele is a man of action, rather than words. He is proactive in his approach. His ability to diagnose complicated problems with thoughtful and pragmatic solutions has created a path for him to continue rendering valuable service to our nation. I wish him a happy birthday,” the president said.

“President Tinubu prays that Almighty Allah grant the business executive more wisdom and strength in his service to Nigeria,” the statement added.

Hassan called on stakeholders, including the masses, to keep on supporting Kyari as he maintains commitment to taking the nation’s oil industry to the next level with a view to guaranteeing their aspirations.

The President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Abubakar Maigandi, yesterday reiterated that any talk of petrol pump price increase is mere rumour.

Maigandi, in a telephone conversation with The Nation yesterday, explained that though private depots in Lagos sell the product at N621 per litre, IPMAN members in the axis have been able to stick to the current retail price of between N600 and N630 per litre at the pumps because they get their supplies mainly from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) at N568 per litre.

“Yes, we make very little profit on what we sell now, but it is a sacrifice that everybody has to make in the interest of the country. Subsidy has been removed, so we must all make the sacrifice and cooperate with government. Besides, we have not received any of such instruction to increase price from NNPCL who is the only importer of the product. So if NNPCL says no increase why would anybody increase the price?” Maigandi asked rhetorically.

In a related development, the National President, Petroleum Retailers Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PROOAN), Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, yesterday said the Federal Government and NNPCL ought to be celebrated for the stabilisation of fuel prices without the need for subsidy payments.

He spoke in an interview on ARISE NEWS, while examining issues around the alleged ongoing subsidy payments because of a purported discrepancy between the retail price of petroleum products and the landing cost of petroleum in the country.

“I think that if subsidy is being paid, we should hear it from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who clearly stated that the subsidy is gone on May 29, 2023. We have also not heard from the group CEO of NNPCL, Engineer Mele Kyari, and neither have we heard from the MD of NNPC Retail Limited.

“So, it is correct that people can have assumption competitions. Associations that are busy working for the interests of Nigerians and their members can also do some projections and speculations as to what’s going on, but the reality is that we can only get accurate information from the source. So, if the government says no subsidy means there is no subsidy, and that’s the reality,” Gillis-Harry stated.

“So, if the government has said that they are not paying subsidy and allow petroleum products to rise from where it was about N480 to N630, there is a clear mandate that we cannot go beyond that and NNPC is managing to make that work. I think we should give them credit and give them kudos,” he added.

According to Gillis-Harry, with Nigeria having the lowest fuel price globally, it is crucial to credit the President and NNPCL for implementing the policy that actualised the feat.

Meanwhile, the NNPCL, yesterday again reassured the public that there is no increment in the price of the commodity.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. assures the public that there is no imminent increase in the cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

“NNPC Ltd. urges Nigerians to disregard unfounded rumours and assures them that there are no plans for an upward review of the PMS price. Motorists nationwide are advised against engaging in panic buying, as there is presently ample availability of PMS across the country,”  its spokesman, Olufemi Soneye said.
