NNPP crisis: Only Kwankwaso has the solution – stakeholders

As the crisis in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) rages on, key stakeholders of the group say that Sen Rabiu Kwankwaso, its presidential candidate, is in the best position to restore order.

Some of them, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that Kwankwaso was the party’s leader who could easily end the raging bad blood by calling a family meeting.

NAN reports that the party recently got enmeshed in a crisis with one faction suspending Kwankwaso and many other top notchers over alleged anti-party activities.

The group specifically accused him of hobnobbing with opponents of the NNPP.

Another group, while reacting to the reported suspension of Kwankwaso, expelled Dr Boniface Aniebonam, founder of the party and former Chairman, Board of Trustees.

With the party swimming in such confusion, stakeholders have suggested a meeting to iron out the issues and chart a way forward.

One such stakeholder is Mr Mordecai Ibrahim, a state house of assembly candidate in Kaduna State.

“Sen Rabiu Kwankwaso as the leader of the party should call a meeting where we can carry out a post-mortem on the 2023 general elections.

“All factions must sheathe their swords and allow internal democracy.

“The party must put an end to all forms of highhandedness. We must tolerate each other’s excesses.

“No one is fighting Kwankwaso in NNPP. He must call a meeting quickly because we are loosing members in droves,” he said.

A national official of the party, who pleaded anonymity, spoke in the same vein.

“Sen Kwankwaso should say something. His silence is too loud. His silence is affecting the party’s breath,” he told NAN in a telephone interview.

Contacted, Dr Aniebonam said that the subject matter is a family issue.

“It is my hope that Senator Kwankwaso will recover quickly from avoidable circumstances.

“I have not made any public statement over what is going on in the party, neither has Kwankwaso.

“The party has boys that are are merely struggling for relevance and stomach infrastructure, especially the inappropriate National Working Committee members.

“I am aware that Sen Kwankwaso may be really very angry because he advised over the rascality of the illegitimate group.

“But, I can assure you that whatever happens, NNPP shall come out stronger after these avoidable circumstances.

“It is just part of politics and society. What is most important to me and Sen Kwankwaso at the moment is the Kano State standoff and enthronement of good governance,” he said.

Aniebonam urged Nigerians to put his people in the NNPP into prayers.

“I particularly want Nigerians to pray for Kwankwaso and the governor of Kano State to overcome challenges of good governance and envy,”

NNPP chieftain tasks PSC, Service Chiefs on regular provision of uniforms to personnel

For effectiveness and smarter service delivery in security management, a chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Amb Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has urged the Federal Government to direct authorities in the security sector to provide uniforms to security personnel twice a year.

The politician specifically appealed to the Police Service Commission (PSC), and all the Service Chiefs to ensure that security personnel uniforms are provided to the nation’s security personnel without hindrance.

Ajadi stated this on Saturday in response to the claim that most of the security personnel in the country are not adequately equipped with uniforms leading to many of them buying uniforms on their own from their stores.

Ajadi, who was the gubernatorial candidate of the NNPP in Ogun State in the 2023 general elections opined that providing uniform twice a year will boost the personnel’s morale, making them looking more corporate and smart, stressing that it will also add to their effectiveness, bring about full-service delivery and general efficiency in the discharge of their duty to their fatherland.

He pointed out that there may not be respect for any security personnel who looks haggard and tattered, hence, the need for the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu to make security personnel to look smarter, sharper and decent in the discharge of their duties.

    • Tells Kwankwaso to go register his party

The crisis rocking the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) took another dimension on Thursday, as the faction of the party loyal to the Board of Trustees pulled out off the memorandum of understanding signed between the Party and the Kwakwansiya Movement in 2022.

The memorandum of understanding, which was signed in February 2022, saw the emergence of former Kano State Governor, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso as the National Leader of the party, while the founder of the party, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam was named Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Aniebonam and the erstwhile National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Agbo Major were expelled from the party on Tuesday by the National Executive Committee, while the BOT also announced the suspension of Engr. Kwankwaso for three months.

However, in a statement on Thursday, Engr. Mohammed Babayo Abdullahi, said to be the Secretary of the BOT, announced an end to the romance between the NNPP, The Nigeria Movement and Keakwansiya Movement.

Engr Abdullahi said leaders of the TNM and the Keakwansiya Movement have been informed of an end to their MOU, which he said was signed with the sole purpose of winning election.

While wishing them well in future with endeavour, he asked them to approach the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for registration as a political party.

He said, “Wearing red cap as members of New NIGERIA People’s Party is a very big embarrassment and avoidable violation of terms of understanding between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiya Movement. This is because Kwankwasiya Movement is not a political party other than New Nigeria Peoples Party.

“For the avoidance doubts, Kwankwasiya Movement, TNM are mere pressure groups under the canopy of NNPP and for the purposes of elections in Nigeria.

“Therefore and henceforth, wearing of red cap is not an appropriate dress code of the NNPP during political activities. At this point, all members of Kwankwasyia Movement are hereby informed that other than being deceived by their leaders, NNPP was not sold to Kwankwasiya Movement or anybody or group of persons.”

He named those who were party to the MOU as Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, who served as National Organising Secretary and Prof Angwe, who served as National Legal Adviser and signed on behalf of TNM, while Dr Aniebonam and Dr Agbo Major signed for the NNPP.

He said further that the exit of these people left “Senator Kwankwaso and elder Buba Galadima floating and swimming in violations of the memo of non existing understanding.

“It is on record that Prof Alkali who also represented TNM and served as National Chairman of the party had since stepped aside as the chairman of the party to avoid destroying his political carrier.

“What we had was a mere memorandum of understanding with Kwankwasiya and TNM to work together for the purposes of winning elective positions. It is not an alliance because none of the group is a political party.”

He said further that the need to end marriage became necessary as parties in the memorandum of understanding have since withdrawn.

He named those who were party to the MOU as Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi who served as National Organising Secretary and Prof Angwe who served as National Legal Adviser and signed on behalf of TNM, while Dr Aniebonam and Dr Agbo Major signed for the NNPP.

He also said that another member of the alliance, Avm Ihemeje, who served as the Deputy National Chairman “equally resigned due to high handedness, constitutional violations, anti-party activities and all sorts of arrogance and avoidable self-pride of senator Kwankwaso and elder Buba Galadima”.

He appealed to all members of the New Nigeria People’s Party from 2001 to date who, out of anger left the party to return and help in the rebuilding process of the party.

He said: “We made an honest mistake but we did not lose out entirely. Today we have one Governor, two Senators, over fifteen House of Representatives and several House of Assembly. We won elective positions as NNPP and not Kwankwasiya Movement and we are very proud.

“It is most unfortunate that NNPP went into political understanding with Kwankwasiya group, but unfortunately it is apparent that a case of highjack from the backdoor may have been established against Senator Kwankwanso and elder Buba Galadima.

“In the opinion of the leadership of NNPP, founder and founding members, the duo of Senator Kwankwaso and elder Buba Galadima may be better described as cowards and gold diggers.

“It is unheard of that a tenant can eject a landlord from his home. We can only put Elder Buba Galadima and Senator Kwankwaso into prayers and ask God to have mercy upon them and forgive their sins against humanity”.

Storm rages in NNPP, founder Aniebonam, others expelled

The alleged suspension of the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is a joke taken too far, the party said yesterday.

The party said those who met in Lagos and announced Kwankwaso’s three-month suspension had been expelled for engaging anti-party activities.

Addressing a news conference on behalf of the National Chairman, the party’s National Auditor, Johnson Oladipo, said it was laughable that the a former National Publicity Secretary, who announced the expulsion of some state chairmen of the party is suddenly recognising the same persons as members of the party.

Dismissing allegations of anti-party activities against Kwankwaso, Oladipupo said a responsible party leader and politician, they were bound to listen to the government when they announced that they wanted to form a government of national unity.

He said: “Each time Kwankwaso was invited by this President, either before his inauguration or after, he has always taken permission from the National Caucus and after such meetings, he will come back to brief the caucus of what transpired.

“There was no agreement reached and there was no consensus. If there had been some some agreements, maybe Dr. Agbo Major would have been the Minister of Information today.”

“Secondly, there have been reports before the elect that Peter Obi and Kwankwaso met. It was the leaders of our party and that of the Labour Party that met.”

He disclosed that following the coming into the party of the Kwankwaso led The Nigeria Movement in February 2022, all organs of the party were dissolved, including the Board of Trustees for a caretaker committee was set up which midwifed the emergence of the leadership of the party at all levels.

He said further that the then National Chairman and founder of the party, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam was appointed a caretaker chairman of the yet-to-be constituted Board of Trustees, alongside Buba Galadima who was to serve as the secretary.

According to him, the BoT was not formally composed due to the pressure of elections, adding that immediately after the election, there was the need to reposition the party.

He expressed regret that the former BoT chairman, who was expelled at the National Executive Committee meeting, turned around, issuing letters to those suspended or expelled from the party reversing their expulsion suspension.

He said: “The BoT does not have the power to reverse the decision of either the NEC or the NEC. But he was exercising that power which he does not have. They gather people in Lagos and say they have suspended the NEC. That is the power he does not have.”

He dismissed insinuation of an emerging faction in the party saying “we don’t have any faction in the NNPP. We have only one NNPP and if you are in doubt, go and ask the Independent National Electoral Commission.”

“In dealing with INEC, the law says all correspondence must be signed by both the National Chairman and National Secretary. We wrote INEC who attended our NEC meeting on Tuesday. Who signed their letter to INEC? Did INEC attend their meeting in Lagos?

“It is funny that Dr. Agbo Major attended all meetings of the disciplinary committee and has always announced the decision of the committee to the world. He announced the suspension of all those suspended and when they were expelled, he announced that too.

“Ironically, the person he announced his expulsion is now the person he is parading as his secretary. Is that not laughable?”

But the BoT insisted that it has power to take over the party.

Agbo, who spoke for the BoT, said the party’s NEC was not properly constituted and therefore lacked legitimacy.

He said: “Let me make it clear that whatever they are saying is entirely their business. Our constitution put in the hands of the Board of Trustees the power to take control of the party when it is unstable and that is what the BoT did on Monday night until the early hours of Tuesday in Lagos.

“They decided that the NWC that existed until yesterday (Tuesday) was illegal because there were series of resignations before the election and the process of having those positions filled as spelt out in the Constitution was not followed.”

  • NNPP wars

    NNPP wars

It’s the fashion these days for everyone to be a desk general!”, WS, our own Nobel Laureate, wrote in Jero’s Metamorphosis.

It was the play’s final sentence; and the final sarcastic flourish struck the acute literati with a comic bite, in those days, as in Niger Republic now, when Nigerian generals were not only coup heroes (apologies to the late Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo) and real desk generals, with zero real war medals!

Well, times have changed, ala democracy, and thank God!  Now, it’s the fashion for everyone to, in this epoch, be “national leader” of political parties.

Peter Obi, even in relation to Labour Party, the political whore that always offers its platform to the highest bidder each election cycle, savours the appellation, “National Leader” on account of an election over-performance, seasoned with lies and deceit.

Then, Rab’iu Musa Kwankwaso, as National Leader of the new New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP): though at least he had enough street savvy to displace the federal ruling party in his native Kano; and the NNPP Kano governor has gone on a demolition blitz, many say, more to settle political scores than for any high state ideals.

The “craze” for “National Leader” is, of course, the triumph of influence over formal power, as epitomized by the president, for eight years under President Muhammadu Buhari, when he bore the honorific title of APC “National Leader”, though the former president was the de jure holder, by convention of presidential democracy.

Before APC, however, Tinubu had birthed at least two parties: Action Congress (AC: 2007) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN: 2011), even gifting perpetual runner, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the AC presidential ticket, when former President Olusegun Obasanjo would rather run him out of town.

Moral? “National Leader” no be “moin-moin” — in that famous local lingo.  It requires more balls, loads and loads of sacrifice and, of course, political savvy.

That brings the matter back to the NNPP “wars”.  Out of the blues, the NNPP Board of Trustees yesterday announced in Lagos it had suspended Kwankwaso, its presidential candidate in the February 25 presidential election, and “National Leader”.

It handed out a six-month “suspension” to further probe Kwankwaso’s alleged anti-party activities: allegedly hobnobbing with President Tinubu, former Vice President Abubakar and Peter Obi.  The NNPP must have taken quite an umbrage at the reported news of Atiku, Obi and Kwankwaso, all veteran PDP folks, kissing and making up, in what appears like slamming the stable gate shut, after the stallion had galloped clear!

But how NNPP would walk its talk is not clear.  Kwankwaso appears not only its most notable political name, his Kano is critical to the future of the party, if it has any.

Still, it offers a very intriguing scenario.  How will it all play out?  Could this be the beginning of the end for NNPP?  Or just awaiting the Kwankwaso faction to seize the whip and thrash the other faction as some failed coup plotters?

Interesting times!  It’s the fashion these days to be a “National Leader”!

    NNPP Trustees suspend Kwankwaso, others

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended its candidate in the Feb. 25 presidential election, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for alleged anti party activities.

The BoT also suspended the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

It also appointed new national officers headed by Dr Agbo Major as acting National Chairman and Mr Ogini Olaposi as acting National Secretary with 18 others.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspension is for six months.

NAN reports that the suspensions were put to a voice vote by members of the party at its special general assembly, held at the Rockview Hotels in Apapa.

NAN recalls that the NWC of the party on Thursday, Aug. 24, announced the suspension of the founder of the party, Dr Boniface Aniebonam and the National Publicity Secretary, Major.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the meeting in Lagos on Tuesday, Secretary of the BoT, Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi, accused Kwankwaso of hobnobbing with President Bola Tinubu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Mr. Peter Obi, without the board’s authorisation.

Abdullahi announced that Kwankwaso had been stripped of the NNPP national leader status by the board.

The secretary of the BoT said the purported suspension of the NNPP founder was a flagrant gross violation of the party’s constitution.

He pointed out that Aniebonam had resigned as the BoT chairman and a new BoT Chairman, Dr Chief Tope Aluko was elected with Abdulahi as new BoT Secretary, while High Chief Tony Obioha was elected as BoT spokesperson

Abdulahi said the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement (TNM) and National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders
(NAGAFF) had been rendered void by the actions of the NWC.

Abdulahi said: “The purported suspension of the founder is a flagrant gross violation of the NNPP constitution such that it is tantamount to recklessness and irresponsibility on the part of the incompetent NWC.

“The BoT decided that material evidence in the public sector affirmed that Kwankwaso was involved in anti-party activities in various meetings, suggest political discussions with the President, Atiku and Obi without authorisation from the board.

” This has earned him six months suspension pending the outcome of investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.

“It is therefore to state clearly that the MOU have been rendered void.”

Also speaking, the acting chairman said his team would hit the ground running by healing the wounds created by the suspended NWC members.

Major said the party would remain the most ordinary friendly party in the country and urged other members that are displaced for one reason or the other to return to its fold.

“We don’t intend to shut anybody out or censor anybody but we want to ensure that we remain on track and maintain our people oriented ideology,” he said.

NAN reports that the special general assembly meeting was attended by the new NWC and members from across the country.

The governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the last governorship election in Benue state and former national legal adviser of the party, Prof. Bem Angwe has resigned his membership of the party.

In a letter of withdrawal addressed to the ward chairman of Mbatyu NNPP in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, a copy of which was sighted by The Nation, cited the current crisis in the party as his reasons for quitting the party.

Angwe said in a statement that the confusion that has engulfed the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at all levels was regrettable.

    He said: “Bearing in mind the brazen disregard by some persons in the Party to the well-outlined rules and regulations, enshrined in the Constitution of the Party, governing the conduct of the affairs of the party;

    “Taking cognizance of the fact that the current development in the Party is not conducive nor healthy for my continued stay in, and membership of the Party;

“And in accordance with the NNPP Constitution 2022 (as amended), I, on this day of 26th August 2023, withdrew my membership of the NNPP.
