  • Nigerian men are romantic – GINNEFINE KANU

Nigerian men are romantic – GINNEFINE KANU

Nollywood actress, nurse and educationist, Ginnefine Kanu says that although she is Sierra Leonean, she is more drawn to Nigeria than any other country. Her school, Ecole Est Belle Acedemy recently held its first valedictory ceremony and OVWE MEDEME was there to witness the occasion.

HOW does it feel holding your first valedictory service?

I thank God. I feel blessed. We are just nine months and we are already graduating some students. I think that is a milestone for us.

Are you an educationist by training?

Yes, I studied education, and I’m also s nurse and an actress. I studied in the USA after which I decided to come back to Nigeria to do my bit.

What motivated you to come to Nigeria to do this despite the recession?

The passion is my motivation. Also, I love kids. So that also motivated me to come. I didn’t think about the recession when I made the decision. I just decided that I will come here and do it.

How have the nine months been?

It’s been good. It’s been challenging, but I can’t complain.

How do you pick your teachers?

They are all well qualified. I don’t have anybody working for me who does not have a teacher’s degree. They all studied education, so none of them are here because they want to teach or because they see teaching as a way out.

What is the overall vision of the school?

The overall vision is for kids to look forward to going to school. That is the vision and I would say we are achieving that.

Where do you intend to take this institution to?

I intend taking it to the world. I want the world to know what we are doing here. I want it to grow, bigger than this. For now, we are a crèche, nursery and primary institution. And we would love to expand it to include a secondary institution. With time, we intend to do that. But I want this to grow first. If we have the resources, we would do it, but we want to nurture this first.

Why did you choose Nigeria to establish this?

Oh, I love Nigeria. I’m in love with Nigeria. I love the accent here. The pidgin mostly is what got me. I have been visiting Nigeria for the past 10 years so there is nothing new to me. I’m not used to my country as much as I’m used to Nigeria. I’m from Sierra Leone, but all my friends and all my ex-boyfriends are all from Nigeria.

Are you married to a Nigerian?

Which of our food is your favourite?

    I love Egusi soup.

Do you know how to prepare it?

I am actually a good cook, so yes, I can prepare it.

How has your acting career been progressing?

It’s been good. I’ve been acting since 2007, so it’s on and off. I first produced my movie with Desmond Elliot. It was titled Too Much. Also, I’ve been doing movies with Emem Isong. She produces movies with my brother. I’ve done Midnight Whisper featuring Ini Edo. I’ve also done several other movies. I just featured in a movie with Mercy Johnson and Saka. I also just produced one starring Oge Okoye, Chelsea Eze. I was also in 3 Wise Men, although I did just one scene with RMD.

How do you cope with all of these activities?

I don’t act in movies as a fulltime job. I only act when I have the time, so I balance it. I pay more attention here than I do to movies. I am also a pediatric nurse and I practice in the United States. I’m mostly here though. I only go back when we have a long vacation.

How do your co-actors relate with you, especially given the fact that you are not a Nigerian?

They don’t see me as a Sierra Leonean or anything like that. To them, I’m just another actor. They embrace me. And they have been wonderful to me. They try to be wonderful to me, especially when I’m acting in a movie

Are you coming up with your own production?

Yes, it is about relationships. It is titled Love, Friendship and Betrayal. Like I said, it stars Oge Okoye, Chelsea Eze, Nino and a host of others. It was shot here in Lagos.

Why betrayal? Has any Nigerian man ever betrayed you?

No, I’ve not been a victim, but generally it is about being married and facing betrayal from a spouse. It is about friendship gone wrong; betraying each other, even as girls.

    Is it a personal story?

No it’s not. It’s just a story that we decided to make into a movie.

    How do you unwind?

I cook. I love to cook. So cooking relaxes me. I don’t go out. So whenever I have a free time, I just stay home and cook.

How often do you go back home for vacation?

Sometimes when I’m on vacation, I go there.

What similarities or differences do you see between Nigeria and Sierra Leone?

It’s basically the same thing for me. They are welcoming, they are nice. Nigerians are a little bit sensitive.

What about the men. How different are they?

I’ve never dated any Sierra Leonean guy. I’ve dated mostly Nigerian men.

Do you have anything against Sierra Leoneans?

No I don’t. I’m just used to Nigerians.

What are those qualities that draw you to Nigerians?

They are so many. Nigerian men are romantic; they are nice and they respect women a lot. That’s what I’ve come to notice about them.

  • My life as an American soldier -Nollywood actress

My life as an American soldier -Nollywood actress

Toyin Ladepo bagged a degree in Dramatic Arts at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The actress, who had a sojourn in the United States where she worked with the US Army, recently returned home to shoot  Okanjuwa, a Yoruba movie starring Richardo Agbor, Kola Oyewo and others. She had an encounter with HANNAH OJO.

Glancing through the timeline of her Facebook page, one forms the impression that Toyin Ladepo, a.k.a Adunni Alapa Dollar, does more than fit into the sole description of a delectable lady. She’s a woman of many parts who combines the duty of a wife and mother with a demanding career in acting. Many will also be dazed to learn that Toyin is a brave woman who possesses knowledge in weaponry and combat, having served in the US army.

A woman of elegant style and effortless grace, Toyin recalled how she got the nickname, Adunni Alapa Dollar, a name which resonates with her admirers in social circles.  “The nickname Alapa Dollar was given to me by a big brother and mentor, Kola Oluyemi, the son of late Chief Wale Ogunyemi. Adunni is actually my oriki, from my maternal family”, she recalled.

With a degree in Dramatic Arts from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Toyin is quick to announce in a confident tone that she was inspired by the late Chief Wale Ogunyemi to study acting. “When he performed ‘Eye of the World’, I was a little girl and I was curious about the drama poster on his car. I asked some questions and I was hooked”, she said, tracing her journey to the world of make believe.

Although she had a stronger writing skill, the constant affirmation by people that she is a good actress also helped sealed her fate as a thespian. Asked to choose between the stage and camera, Toyin quipped that she feels at home on the stage than on the screen. She added: “I love the stage. On the set of Okanjuwa, in all the scenes I shot with Dr Kola Oyewo, I felt like his student again. I felt like we were back in OAU, Pit Theatre, performing ‘Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again‘, written by Late Prof. Ola Rotimi. I had played Liza alongside him, as Lekoja Brown. The stage demands so much from you; there is no chance for mistakes. Once it’s “light”, you give your best and keep giving it till the end.”

Not one to hide her feelings about people, she confessed to being challenged by the works of others. Crediting Rogers Ofime as the person who gave her a push into movie production, she listed the likes of Rykardo Agbor, Kunle Coker, Dupe Jayesinmi, John Njamah, Ernest Obi, Dr Kola Oyewo, Kunle Afolayan, Funke Akindele, Kareem Adepoju (Baba Wande), as people who inspire her.

Launching into movie production, the affable actress released a trailer for Okanjuwa, a recent movie which was received to a wide acclaim by fans on social media. According to her, the soon to be released movie is a serious drama depicting the different socio-political challenges encountered in the society.  “It is quite different from the usual drama we watch on TV. It is well scripted, there is less improvisation, more structured dialogue and the Yoruba language is richly showcased. The movie will hit the market before the end of this year”, she submitted.

In an industry bedeviled with many challenges; it will not come as a surprise that shooting a movie in Nigeria after a long spell abroad, there would be experiences of failed expectations. We still have a long way to go in the area of professionalism. I must tell you that there are very good performers out there, who are professionals, who do things right, who mentor you and try their best. At the same time, there are people who try to fleece you, and who try to ruin your hard work. All in all, you have to remain focused and try to be the difference.”

Having combed through the demanding terrain of weaponry make believe, it’s almost a close call to label Toyin as a fierce ambitious woman but a closer look into her personality portrays a woman who is sold to nurturing family values.

Although she has been getting invitations to other film projects, Toyin said she has had to decline the offer to be part of other project because she is nursing a young daughter.

Married to an ex- journalist, Mr Biodun Ladepo who works in the US army, Toyin is presently based in Accra, Ghana, which is the recent posting of her husband. Is she not worried that the distance could have implications for her acting career? To this she responded in the affirmative, saying it is difficult to maintain a career in Nollywood while she is based in Accra. “In anything you do in Nigeria, you cannot afford to be far away. You have to be present to get anything done. I have a Facebook page that is active for my fans”. She added.

Apart from keeping up with fans, Toyin also uses her Facebook space to call out discriminatory behaviours on women and family issues.  On her stance, she maintains that she is not an activist but just opinionated. “If I feel strongly about something, I let my voice be heard. One of the things I have spoken passionately about is marital sex; men are always blaming the women for not being ‘hot’ in bed. While hot is subjective, not all men can claim to be good lovers.”

Probed further on how she met her husband in the US; Biodun Ladepo, who currently serves in the US army; Toyin stated with candour that knew she was going to marry him the first time they met.

“We met through a mutual friend and it was love at first sight. I knew I was going to marry Ishola the day we met. Don’t ask me how I knew, I just knew (smiles)”. On how the relationship has been sustained so far, “she cited genuine love, patience and understanding as the building force. “Relationships have their ups and downs but with genuine love, patience and understanding, we have been able to stay together in love, mutual respect and friendship.”

Reflecting on her sojourn in the US, Toyin said she was forced to leave Nigeria at that time because she felt lonely.

“My four siblings were in Texas. I was greatly motivated to leave because I was lonely and I thought I could be happier around my siblings. In my naivety, I abandoned a quest to have a career in broadcasting and took the offer of ‘greener pastures’. Though I am grateful to my mother for going to lengths to make sure I was given permanent residency in the USA, I quickly found out it was not that easy to blend, my foreign accent, my imbibed culture, and the adaptation to the different society.

“After two years of being miserable, I enlisted with the United States Army, where I trained as a medic and a practical nurse. Becoming a soldier was not an easy feat; there were tears, gas chamber, physical and psychological exercises, more tears and then more tears. Lots of weapon knowledge and show of bravery. The Army is great, one of my greatest achievements”.

For a woman who has had her fare share of life experience; what would be her advice to young talents eyeing stardom in the movie industry, despite the poor pay?

“The pay is indeed poor. The problem we do have in the society is these unreal pictures of unimaginable wealth and stardom pushed on the social media. It is a fantasy. When I talk to aspiring stars, I tell them to be original and be hard working. It is only through hard work and due diligence that you can become a star. It is not by the pictures on social media. It is by self-respect and humility”, she submitted.

For a professional thespian who did not only study acting in an institution of higher learning but has also experience life on stage, one wonders the  extent to which she can ‘bare it all’ with a character of the opposite sex while interpreting a movie script? To this she responded: “Since I do not act in pornographic films, I cannot bare it all. I had to kiss Rycardo Agbor in Okanjuwa, it was a pleasant experience. That is how far I can go. Not more than a kiss”.

“It breaks my heart that I have to do this but as it is you have left me with no choice……I had sleepless night because I just couldn’t comprehend why someone i loved , someone with whom I have a child will be hell bent on destroying me, I just cannot comprehend it……..

“I read with tears in my eyes all the LIES you fabricated against me, LIES you feel will justify your inhumane act, LIES you feel will gain you public sympathy and LIES calculated to bring my person to public opprobrium……..

    “You claim ….

    (1) I am Mentally Unstable (2) That you have caught me with different men

    LIES all LIES……..

“Dear hubby I challenge you to back on your claims with PROOF!!!!!!!!!……….

Hmmmm Lanre you forget quickly!…., you forget how I have labored and stood by you all these years, even tho all what I was getting from you was constant beating, harassment, threat to my life and threat to destroying my image if I dare, leave you…… .,,You must PROOF all your allegations otherwise God knows I am going to add another lawsuit to the one on ground!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Although my Team has been pleading with me to stay silent all these while, but I have come to realize that you want to ride on my keeping mum.”

Mercy, who already got a restraining order from her husband has begun divorce proceedings on Friday. But Lanre was not present at the Lagos court.

On Wednesday, Lanre had claimed in a report that Mercy had mental problems.

“Mercy has mental issues and I’m the one who knows how many places we’ve been to so she can remain stable,” he said.

“I have papers to prove this.”

Lanre also swore that he had never beaten Mercy and it was Mercy and her friends that ganged up to beat him while still accusing her of infidelity.

“See, I understand her antics too well,” he said.

“All she wants is to be free to live the life of a single woman. What I have tolerated from her all these years, no man can tolerate from any woman.

“I worshipped her and I have deposited N8m at Benefit Motors to buy her a N16m Range Rover Evoque for her 40th birthday. I have also paid N1.2m for a hall opposite Sheraton Hotel to celebrate her big, but she has her eyes on other things.”

Mercy Aigbe gets beaten by husband

Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe Gentry has been beaten by her husband, according to online reports.

It was reported that Mercy had to be hospitalised after her husband of seven years, Lanre Gentry, beat her so much last week that the actress is still in the hospital according to Linda Ikeji blog where pictures of her battered face were posted.

A phone call to her publicist by The Nation was not answered.

However, sources in the report revealed that there were allegations of adultery levelled on both Mercy and her husband.

It was alleged that Mercy’s husband has been involved with a lady called Opemititi aka Queen Stunner, who was a close of the Gentry family before she and Mercy fell out.

And while Mercy had posted a call to resist to domestic violence, writing on Instagram, “Say NO to DOMESTIC VIOLENCE… Only a Coward hits a woman! REAL MEN don’t HIT,” her husband responded on his own Instagram account Friday, writing, “Say no to the promiscuous and irresponsible women.”

But Lanre reportedly deleted the picture and reiterated his love for his wife, posting a picture of both of them at an event and writing, “I love my wife so much.”

This is however, not the first time that reports of domestic violence have been associated with Mercy Aigbe’s marriage. A report in 2013 said she was beaten by her husband during the recording of a TV show. But Mercy and her husband denied that such an incident never happened
