  • Winners emerge in 2018 Three Crowns’ Mom of The Year contest

    The 2018 Three Crowns Mum of The Year contest came to a rousing climax last Sunday in Lagos with three mothers carting away the Grand Prize of all-expenses-paid trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and a whole year supply of Three Crowns Milk.

    The panel of judges, made up of Nollywood stars, Fathia Balogun, Bellinda Effah, and popular Fitness Coach, Bunmi George (Shreddergang) declared Mrs. Jennifer Otu, Mrs. Pauline Pambolo Daniel and Adaobi Okonkwo the winners having scored overall highest marks combined across the three stages of the competition – Fitness, Smartness, Fun Tests  and popular votes.

    It was the first time that the event, which is in its fourth year, would award the Grand Prize to three contenders and this was done to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Three Crowns milk in Nigeria.

    Also, the fourth and fifth place winners were each rewarded with N1,000,000 worth of kitchen makeover; the 6th and 7th place winners got N500,000 worth of kitchen makeover each, while each of the 8th, 9th and 10th winners received N300,000 worth of kitchen makeover to be redeemed at any store of their choice.

    Speaking at the event, Senior Brand Manager of Three Crowns Milk, Omolara Banjoko said Three Crowns Milk’s support for mothers was hinged on the fact that mothers play an important role in shaping the society at large.

    She added that their choice to eat right and keep fit is very important in reducing the risk of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases for the family and society.

    In her words, “Three Crowns supports families by providing high quality nutrition for mothers and by extension, their families. One of the key things that we have identified is that the foundation of any family is the mother and with them being the foundation, they need to stay fit and healthy which is what Three Crowns truly believes in. We strongly believe that if the pillar of the house, being the mother, is taken care of, the whole family is strong”.

    Responding to the news of her emergence as the overall winner of the competition, Mrs. Otu expressed her appreciation to FrieslandCampina WAMCO, thanking the company for the remarkable opportunity to participate and win the ‘2018 Mum of the Year’.

    She noted that the event had transformed her in many ways as she now sees the need to keep fit and adopt health and wellness routine as a lifestyle.

    Mrs. Otu, who equally came tops in the online poll, was overwhelmed by emotions upon being named 2018 Three Crowns Mum of The Year.

    She thanked FrieslandCampina WAMCO for the opportunity and promised to efficiently execute all the activities expected of her as a Three Crowns Milk brand ambassador.

    “I cannot fully express the joy I feel to be crowned the 2018 Three Crowns Milk ‘Mum of the Year’. This journey started several months ago when my daughter told me about the competition. I bought a pack for myself and for some of my friends and asked them to vote for me. I was very committed to the process and spent time trying to persuade family and friends to vote. Thank God that all our efforts and hardwork have ended up in success. This is my first time of taking part in such competition and I thank God for the outcome. I have learnt a lot in the course of this journey, but the most important lesson I have learnt is how to stay healthy and fit.”

As soon as I was called that I had been nominated I put in more efforts, I visited Three Crowns website and tagged people I know so that they could vote for me. I am excited and happy and I look forward to our trip to Dubai. I want to visit all the places I have read about.”

    In the same vein, Mrs. Okonkwo, the third place winner said she entered for the contest because she wanted a chance to celebrate her accomplishment as a mother. “When I saw the promo for the event, I told myself I needed to be celebrated. I have been a mum for 12 years and it’s not an easy feat. My family and colleagues also felt that I needed to be celebrated and they rallied round to ensure I won.”

  • Why we’re involved —Nollywood stars who clinched their parties’ tickets

    Why we’re involved —Nollywood stars who clinched their parties’ tickets

    Like never before, the 2015 general election will for a long time be remembered as one in which Nigerian entertainers not only found their rhythm but also found their voices. Tired of living a life of make-believe in movies and songs, and wanting to prove a point to their doubters, the entertainers came out in full force into politics, not as mere supporters but as contenders for political offices in the elections.

    Three of the Nollywood stars  Desmond Elliot, Shola Onayiga and Funke Adesiyan  who clinched their parties’ tickets, shared their experiences with us. Elliot, who is contesting to represent the Surulere 1 constituency in the Lagos House of Assembly, expressed happiness with his victory in the primaries. For him, the victory is a confirmation of the trust the people and leaders of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), repose in him.

    While admitting that politics is stressful, he was quick to add that he is delighted to offer himself for the service of his people. “It’s quite stressful. But I bless God for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Though it is a different terrain, but it is not too far from the kind of jobs we do in the movies, especially in terms of the stress that we encounter; you know that you still have to deal with people. But politics is something that comes from your heart, so you cannot complain about the stress. I am glad to be counted worthy of being a candidate of my great party.”

    Interestingly, Elliot’s romance with politics did not just start yesterday. While most people would want to believe that he, like most entertainers, was attracted to politics in a bandwagon effect, he disclosed that his interest in politics was began during the MKO Abiola crisis in 1993.

    “I think I have been involved in politics all my life. It was born from the MKO period. I have always been interested in politics. I started nursing this ambition about seven years ago. It is something that has always been dear to me.”

    On his choice for a parliamentary role, Elliot said: “Firstly, it is the fact that you can make laws and still reach out to your people. You know that the executive is purely reaching out, but in the assembly, you can influence law-making, which goes a long way in helping you to decide what path of development your people would take.”

    His involvement in politics is not something he sees as ending any time soon. “When it comes to growth, it is always good to start from the scratch, learn the ropes and climb higher. So, the assembly is a good place to start and prove yourself. It is a student in form one in a secondary school. For me, being young and vibrant, I think there is a lot that I can offer. I am in a position where I can inspire a lot of youths by the time I start to achieve and being of good service to the people.”

    funke adesiyan
    funke adesiyan

    Beautiful actress, Funke Adesiyan, is very hopeful of becoming the first female Nigerian entertainer to be elected into a state parliament in the country. Adesiyan, who is contesting for the Ibadan South East constituency on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), described her clinching the ticket to represent her party as a responsibility on her shoulders.

    While expressing happiness with the prospect of becoming a lawmaker, the actress said she feels responsible for party members who gave her their votes. “I would say winning the primary election is a sign of responsibility on my shoulders. It means more work. Yes, it is true that I am happy, but I have not forgotten the fact that I owe those who voted for me to represent them the responsibility of good representation.”

    With the primary election victory behind her, Adesiyan said her attention has shifted to the general elections. “While I keep being me, we have shifted the gear to next month’s general elections. That has been keeping us very busy.”

    She refuted claims that she is a new entrant into politics. “My entry into politics is not something that is sudden. It is something that I have been doing for a long time. It is vying for political office that is new. If you recall, I was part of the presidential campaign team of Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau. I played a major role in the campaign.”

    Being an active politician, Funke Adesiyan says, will not put an end to her acting career. “I have always said that film-making in my hobby. It is something that I like to do; it is not my job. Filming is something I do when I have the time. Aside politics, I am also a businesswoman. That is what I do to earn my living.”

    Speaking on her plans, she said giving back to the society has always been something of interest to her. She confessed to The Nation that her confidence is boosted by the fact that she is the only female and the youngest among the contestants. “My people, especially the women, are happy with me. I am also the youngest and the only female contesting in my constituency. So, the women and the youths have been very supportive of my ambition. Our fathers and mothers are also impressed with me.”

    Another popular actress, Shola Onayiga, is hoping to represent Ikorodu constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). For her, the need for more robust contributions to governance was the driving factor in her getting involved in politics.

    “In life, we cannot continue to sit down and complain about what some people are not doing right. We need to come out to contribute our own quota to the development of the country.”

    Long before she entered into politics, Onayiga said she had always taken care of the youths around here within the limit of her capability. “If you look round, you’ll see many youths roaming the streets without jobs. In my own little way, I have always been involved with these youths, helping them acquire skills that will keep them off the streets.”

    Onayiga is sad that governments at all levels in the country have failed to see the economic value of the nation’s movie industry. According to her, “The movie industry is one of the largest employers of labour in the country. We have people who are professionals in different fields in the industry. You have doctors, lawyers and other professionals who earn their livings through acting. Imagine what would happen if the government would invest in this industry and make it work properly.”

    She is also out to prove a point. For her, it is wrong for anybody to view an entertainer as a no-do-well. “Some people still believe that actors and actresses are drop-outs. But it is not true, most of us are graduates in different fields. Don’t forget that we all gained admission into the university with the same requirements. For anybody to see us as drop-outs is not only funny, but also nonsense.”

    As Nigerians wait eagerly for next month’s general elections, entertainers across the country would hope their representatives in the elections will run a successful race that will open more doors for them in future elections.

  • Wanted: New value system for Africa

    Wanted: New value system for Africa

    For  three days, scholars, historians and thespians converged on Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, to chart a new pathway on how to use culture to drive development in   Africa and the Diaspora, reports   Assistant Editor (Arts) OZOLUA UHAKHEME.

    If the calibre of Nollywood stars at the International Cultural Festival and Colloquium held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, is a measure of success, the event can pass for grade ‘A’ performance. Expectedly, the stars led by humour merchant, Chika Okpala of the New Masquerade fame, (Chief Zebrudaya) backed by royal fathers–King Amalate Johnnie Turner, the Obanema of Opume Kingdom, (who was represented) and King Alfred Diete Spiff, the Amanayanabo of Twon-Brass, added colour to the festival that attracted historians, academics, Pan-Africanists, activists and other experts drawn from Africa and the Diaspora.

    The  theme of the three-day event (November 26 to 28) was: Using Culture To Drive The Transformation of Africa And The Diaspora in a New Global Order. It was organised by Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAC) and Bayelsa State Ministry of Culture and Ijaw National Affairs in collaboration with the University of Port Harcourt.

    The hitherto serene Peace Park, Yenagoa, venue of the festival was literarily ignited by colourful parade by the Nollywood stars and Enugu masqueraders. Among them were Pete Edochie, Patience Ozokwo, Keppy Ekpeyong, Alex Osifo, Ajibola Dabo, Charles Inojie, Francis Duru, Yakubu Abubakar, Ejike Asiegbu, Ejiro Okurime and Chinedu Ikedieze (Aki). Pupils of St. Jude Secondary School, Amarata, Yenagoa, Women Affairs School, University of Port Harcourt Alumni, Ekpe masquerades and Enugu State cultural troupe also featured in the parade.

    Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson, represented by  Commissioner for Culture and Ijaw National Affairs, Dr. Felix Tuodolor said the time has come for African leaders to use culture for diplomacy and development, noting that CBAAC must be prepared to drive the efforts.

    Director-General, Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC) Sir Ferdinand Anikwe has identified music, video, fabrics and food as means through which African culture is being internationalised.

    He said  Nigerian home videos have become popular and a reference point of cultural and social influence all over the world.  He noted that through home videos, Africans and the rest of the world are picking up vocabulary of Nigerian languages.

    “Diaspora Nigerians and Africans should endeavor as much as possible to promote African fabrics and food.  This, in a way, has endeared African foods and fabrics to the hearts of most foreigners, which have become strong factors in their way of lives. This development is in tandem with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) view, that social transformation generally comprises change in existing parameters of a societal system, including technological, economic, political and cultural restructuring,” he added.

    According to Anikwe, such lofty attempts by the artists, actors and creative writers need to be institutionalised and strengthened for more effect. African States, he said, must continue to harp and invest on artists and actors that have become the continent’s great cultural ambassadors.   “Please permit me to state unequivocally that we can only underrate our culture at our own peril. We are witnesses to the impact that western culture has had on the minds of our youths through music, movies, novels, football, religion, internet activities, costumes and fashions.  It is in this wise that we must remain eternally indebted to the fathers of African Literature such as Chinua Achebe,  Wole Soyinka, J. P. Clark, Ngugu Wa Thiongo, Chimamanda Adichie, and a host of others for pioneering African writers series with its robust cultural background, that capture the minds and attention of our youths,” he added.

    But he observed that it is of great significance that the Western world has started showing enormous interest in studying and promoting African culture and history.  He stressed that there is the need for Africa to recognise its cultural uniqueness and potentialities, package it properly, with the conscious objective of using it to influence the ways of lives of other peoples.

    Continuing, he said: “This will ultimately lead to more recognition and economic benefit for the continent.  African States need to evolve both policies and programmes for the internationalisation of her cultures through art, music, science and technology, education, tourism and diplomacy.  Achieving this requires doing all it takes to revamp the spirit of our various cultures. It is in African cultures that the oneness of her peoples could be found. We therefore appreciate that the task before CBAAC and other culture agencies is to pursue the sustained and possibly, the aggressive promotion and preservation of African culture.”

    Nollywood star Pete Edochie described the movie industry as second employer of labour after government noting that Goodluck Jonathan will invite him for the celebration of his re-election next year.

    The colloquium held at Ijaw House auditorium, Yenagoa, featured papers on culture and cultural regeneration in Africa and the Diaspora, Culture and national development in Nigeria, Using culture to fastrack African development, The Nollywood industry in the promotion of national development, Re-engineering Pan African cultural studies in the Black Atlantic among other sub-themes.

    In a communiqué issued at the close of the colloquium, organisers recommended:

    •That the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC), should intensify its efforts in the preservation of African culture most importantly, the re-introduction of the teaching of History in Nigerian schools;

    •That CBAAC canvass for the de-colonisation of the already colonised African cultures, as this is a challenge to all Africans.  This is to be done in partnership with the intelligentsia, artists, non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) and all allied agencies in Africa.  This will make for self-reliance, in socio-economic and cultural affairs of African State;

    •That CBAAC should develop a pathway through which the book can be used for new value-system development, since the values of the past are continuously being eroded;

    •That a national policy be established for use of Bibliotherapy in value-system re-orientation for behaviour modification, and change within the society;

    •That the National Censors Board, in collaboration with CBAAC and allied agencies, aim at censoring music dramatization to ensure nudity is reduced at production – editing stage, before public viewing on air;

    •That CBAAC canvass for the establishment of a Department of African Studies that would cater for a purely African culture and the handling of African Traditional Affairs;

    •Explore the possibility of incorporating traditional models of conflicts resolution devoid of modern adulteration, and institutionalizing these for use, in Africa;

    •That gender must emphatically, not be a determinant in apportioning responsibilities.  When men and women render services from their natural areas of responsibilities without discrimination, development results, borne out of the exploration of potentials inherent in synergy;

    •That, films are capable of being used as instrument for making peace, and managing conflicts when scriptwriter, actor and director chose to make films that espouse pure culture, and ignore money-making.
