  • Emmanuel nominates 11 for Akwa Ibom Exco

    Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has forwarded the names of 20 persons to the House of Assembly as commissioner-nominees and special advisers (SAs).

    The names were read during plenary on Friday on the floor of the Assembly by the Clerk, Mrs Mandu Umoren.

    Out of the 20, nine were members of the last State Executive Council (Exco), which the governor dissolved.

    The 11 others are freshmen.

    Those nominated as commissioners are: Paul Udofia, Ime Okon Ekpo, Dr Nse Essien, Prof. Eno Ikpe, Idorenyin Udo and Linus Nkan.

    Others are: Uduak Udoinyang, Charles Udo, Orman Esin, Dr Iniobong Essien, Dr Dominic Ukpong, Uwemedimoh Nwoko and Victor Antai.

    Other nominees are: Monday Uko, Dr Glory Edet, Udo Ekpenyong, Akan Okon and Ephraim Inyang.

    The governor submitted two names – Ekong Sampson and Ekemini Umoh – as Special Advisers.

    Speaker Onofiok Luke referred the list to the House Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and Public Petitions for further legislative action.

    He directed the committee to report back to the Assembly within one week.

    Jonathan nominates Chidoka, Abubakar as ministers

    President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday nominated the Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osita Chidoka, and a Political Science lecturer from the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Dr. Sulaiman Olanrewaju Abubakar, for screening and confirmation by the Senate as for ministers.

    Chidoka and Abubakar are expected to fill the ministerial slots of Anambra and Kwara states in the Federal Executive Council (FEC.)

    Jonathan urged the Senate to confirm the Acting Director-General of the Nigeria Pension Commission (PENCOM), Mrs Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, as the substantive Director-General of the agency.

    He also nominated Mr. Ebenezer Foby as a Federal Commissioner in PENCOM to represent Southsouth.

    Screening and confirmation of the nominees may hold next Wednesday before the Senate goes on its annual long recess.

    Chidoka may likely be assigned the Ministry of Aviation, which was vacated by Princess Stella Oduah and Dr. Abubakar may be assigned the National Planning Commission.

    Jonathan nominates Shekarau, Adeyeye two others for ministers

    President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday nominated former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau as a minister.

    In a letter to the Senate, the President also picked Stephen Orise Oruh (Delta), Prince Adedayo Adeyeye (Ekiti) and Dr. Abdul Bulama (Yobe) as ministers.

    But Kwara and Anambra states, which have no ministers, were not included on the list.

    The letter reads: “In accordance with Section 147, (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I have the honour to forward the under-listed ministerial nominees for consideration and Senate’s confirmation.

    “Dr Abdul Bulama (Yobe), Dr. Stephen Oruh (Delta), Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano) and Prince Adedayo Adeyeye (Ekiti).

    “It is my hope that this exercise will receive the usual kind expeditious consideration of the distinguished members of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

    It was learnt that three of the four nominees take the place of former ministers of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe (Delta); Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade (Ekiti) and Minister for State for Finance, Yerima Ngama (Yobe).

    Hadjia Jamilia Salik (Kano) was among the 12 ministerial nominees forwarded to the Senate for confirmation in January. But she was not screened for the job.

    Kwara and Anambra states are yet to get ministerial nominees to fill their slots, following the removal of Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi as Sports Minister in March  and Princess Stella Oduah,  as the Minister of Aviation.

    Jonathan nominates DG for NCAA

    President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday nominated Captain Fola Akinkuotu as the new Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

    This was contained in a letter from the President and read by Senate President David Mark at plenary in Abuja.

    The President, in the letter entitled: “Request for the confirmation of appointment of new Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA),” said the former DG, Dr Harold Demuren was sacked due to perceived poor internal audit and quality assurance in the agency.

    The letter reads in part: “Following concerns expressed by aviation stakeholders on perceived poor internal audit and quality assurance within the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Federal Government is in the process of restructuring the authority for better and more efficient service delivery.

    “Consequently, Dr. Harold Olusegun Demuren has been relieved of his appointment, as the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, in line with the provisions of Sections 8(3) (a) and (c) of the Civil Aviation Act of 2006.

    “I hereby present the nomination of Captain Fola C. Akinkuotu, from the same geopolitical zone as Dr. Demuren, as the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for the confirmation of the Senate.”

    Also the Senate yesterday confirmed the reappointment of Suleiman Barau as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank.

    The lawmakers spoke glowingly of Barau when the Chairman, Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, Senator Bassey Otu, presented the report of his screening.

    Barau was nominated for reappointment following the expiration of his first term as CBN’s Deputy Governor by the President.

    Also, Jonathan has sent a Bill to the National Assembly for an Act to establish the Nigeria Police Academy.

    President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday urged the Senate to approve the nomination of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (from Kebbi State) and Prof Chinedu Nebo (from Enugu State) as ministers

    Although he did not specify the portfolios of the nominees, the ministries of Defence and Power have no ministers since the exit of Alhaji Mohammed Haliru Bello and Prof. Barth Nnaji.

    Bello, former as Defence minister hails from Kebbi while Nnaji, who headed the power ministry is from Enugu.

    Senate President David Mark informed senators of the request when he read the correspondence from the President to senators.

    Turaki, 52, is a lawyer a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). The Masanin Gwandu was the chairman of the Northen Union, a political pressuire group promoted by the late Dr. Olusola Saraki.

    Nebo is the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti – one of the newly established universities. He was Vice Chancellor of University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka.

    Jonathan also requested for a convenient date to brief the lawmakers on the proposed programme for the centenary celebrations and to get their input.

    In another letter, Dr. Jonathan said: “The purpose of this letter is to request for a convenient date for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to receive a full briefing on the proposed programme for the Centenary Celebrations, so that your input will also be accommodated in the framework.”

    In separate letters, the President forwarded the name of Alhaji Suleiman Barau for reappointment as a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and also sought the consideration and passage of N253,199,752,409 as the 2013 statutory budget for the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT).

    He added that the FCT budget was made up of a capital expenditure of N155,660,399,641.00, personnel cost of N48,034,818,410 and overhead cost of N49,504,534,358.00.

    The President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Mr. Tony Elumelu, have been nominated for the Forbes Africa Person of the Year Award.

    They are the two Nigerians who made the five-man list.

    Others on the list are Malawian President Joyce Banda, Managing Director of Kenya’s Equity Bank Limited, Dr. James Mwangi and co-founder of Aspen Pharmacare, Mr. Stephen Saad.

    A statement by the organisers said: “Aliko Dangote: founder and president of Dangote Group. Motivation: Last year’s runner-up to Forbes Africa Person of The Year, is still Africa’s richest man, worth more than $11.2 billion. Dangote continues to be one of the continent’s biggest employers. He promises to donate most of his fortune to charitable causes upon his retirement.

    “Dr James Mwangi won the Ernest and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award 2012 as well as Africa’s Innovation Leader of the Year Awards in 2012. Equity Bank is planning to extend its financial services to Ethiopia when the country opens its banking industry for foreign investors.

    “Saad is the biggest shareholder of the largest publicly-traded drug manufacturer, Aspen. The company has a market capitalisation of $6 billion. Saad became a multimillionaire at 29. Now aged 47, he employs more than 6,000 people.”

    The winner of this award would have had an influence on the events of the year gone by on the African continent.
