  • After ministers’ nomination, what next?

    After ministers’ nomination, what next?

The President has spoken. Twice last week, he spoke on issues of the moment. First, on the last day of September, after the Senate had sat and adjourned, President Muhammadu Buhari’s emissaries arrived to hand a sealed envelop containing ministerial nominees to the Senate President. In doing that, he addressed the anxiety of the people and checkmated plans of his adversaries. The truth told, I also saw no reason why it should take so long to decide those who would administer the country with him. With that move, composing the Federal Executive Council has moved to the second stage- screening of the nominees by the Senators.

Then, on October 1, the President had his day in addressing the nation on his thoughts and perspectives on issues of the moment. It was a short speech that dealt with a number of contemporary issues.

The President, in terms of charisma was no better than his predecessor. He was hardly audible, but sounded sincere and believable. He came across as a man honest and at peace with himself. He sounded like one who would have said the same things had the time and circumstances been different. But, of all he said, I found the reasons advanced for the long delay in choosing his ministers disarming. He explained that he had to make a choice between speed and order. It was his considered opinion that the federal bureaucracy could not be left at the pre-May 29 level and expected to perform rfficiently and optimally.

Therefore, as recommended by his transition committee, he had to settle for restructuring at the same time as putting together his team. It was a cogent reason. The question, however, is why did it take him so long to come up with it? Had he volunteered the information early enough, the bad press and public agitation would have been halted. Is this the Buhari style, or sheer arrogance? I recall that he did the same over the controversy that trailed his educational status during electioneering. This might not be the best, going forward. He is no longer General Muhammadu Buhari, a retired military officer and former Head of State who could choose to be tight-lipped, pleading privacy. He owes the public explanations and his media team must be empowered to deliver.

The President did not just speak through submitting his ministerial nominees to the Senate to grill, he also spoke to the expectations on the quality and caliber of the men and women who made his list. It is obvious that opinions would remain divided on this. The skeptics would argue that it is the same old guards; predictable. He went for the Director General of his campaign organisation, the man who superintended the convention that made him the All Progressives Congress’s presidential candidate, national chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples’ Party, legal adviser of his Congress for Progressive Change and Mr. Babatunde Fashola , seen mostly as the face of performance in state administration. And then, the question, if so predictable, why did it take four months? The argument that there was intense lobbying in the party is easily dismissed as it could not have been otherwise. Even in the Peoples Democratic Party, it was so,let alone a party that has as many as four strong tendencies. It was left for the President to put his feet down, pick those he knew could deliver and on whom he could take the rist of running the race with.

In the days and months and years ahead, one would expect the President to speak more with Nigerians. He cannot afford to dismiss the people as if they are inconsequential. It is even more insulting when he chooses to get his message across to Nigerians through foreign media organisations. He is the Nigerian President and must run the administration in the country. It is unacceptable for him to keep sealed lips at home and open up to a foreign audience. His media team should tutor him on the danger on getting the channel of communication clogged.

He could also do with some speech delivery practice sessions. He would need it in capturing his audience both at home and on his frequent visits abroad. It is not too late to deliver some flair even as he reads a prepared speech. For effect, it would not hurt if the President were made to listen to speeched delivered by the late Sir Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa, the late General Murtala Muhammed and rx-President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In the next four years, at least in the first instance, President Muhammadu Buhari would be carrying the burden of this complex country. He is required to come across not only as the Chief executive with the authority that goes with it, but equally as Father of the Nation and the sense of responsibility it connotes, the Commander-in-Chief and the decisiveness that must accompany the appellation and Inspirer who mobilizes the people to change the national fortunes.

One of the channels through which these qualities could be gauged is the national broadcast. It is my humble suggestion to our President that he submits to experts to work on the flaws. It could only reinforce his greatness.

  • Court upholds the nomination of Odofin as Oba-elect of Ikorodu

Justice Akintunde Savage of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikorodu has upheld the election of the Odofin of Ikorodu, Chief Kabiru Shotobi as the oba-elect to the stool of Ayangburen of the ancient town.

Justice Savage gave the ruling after taking the arguments of counsels to claimants and respondents in a suit contesting the selection of the oba-elect by the kingmakers of the town.

The judge held that the nomination of  Shotobi was valid and that he was duly elected by the kingmakers to ascend the throne as the next Ayangburen of Ikorodu and not in breach of the consent judgement in suit IKD/57/2007.

The court ruled that the first to  third respondents and all other defendants in the matter are also not in breach of the judgement in suit IKD/57/2007.

The applicants, Mathew Adetayo Shodipo, Omobo Sokelu, Shakiru Shodipo, Nurudeen Fakomaya and Albert Aina had filed a suit, IKD/454GCM/2014 (for themselves and on behalf of the Lambo branch of the Lasunwon ruling house of Ikorodu) and through an originating summon challenged the nomination of Shotobi by the kingmakers as the oba-elect of the ancient town of Ikorodu.

Joined as  respondents in the suit are Ezekiel Shodipo, Tajudeen Odofin (for themselves and on behalf of the Adegorushen branch of the Lasunwon ruling house of Ikorodu), the Odofin of Ikorodu, Chief Kabiru Shotobi; the Olisa and regent of Ikorodu, Chief Zacheus Oludele Odusoga; Solomade of Ikorodu, Chief Afolabi Adekayaoja; Apena of Ikorodu, Chief Karimu Ore and Oponuwa of Ikorodu, Chief Jacob Kolawole Adaraloye (for themselves and on behalf of the kingmakers of Ikorodu).

Others are Ikorodu Local Government; Ikorodu division of council of Obas and Chiefs; Secretary, Ikorodu Chieftaincy Committee, Ikorodu Local government: Lagos State Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs and Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State.

The applicants, in their application, had prayed the court to determine “whether the consent judgement of a Lagos High Court, Ikorodu division in suit IKD/57/2007 (Mathew Adetayo Shodipo and others versus Ezekiel Shodipo and others) is subsisting and valid; whether parties and privies are bound by the aforesaid judgement until same is set aside on appeal; whether fourth to eighth respondents-kingmakers are bound by the aforesaid judgement being parties in suit no IKD/57/2007 and whether eighth and ninth respondents are not bound as well being parti/privies thereon”.

They had also prayed the court to determined “whether third defendant/respondent is not bound and stopped from being presented, nominated and selected as a candidate from Lasunwon Ruling House to any future chieftaincy title” and “whether indeed the Adegorushen Branch of the Lasunwon Royal Ruling House is not precluded by the decision in IKD/57/2007 from presenting a candidate for the now vacant title of Ayangburen of Ikorodu?” among others.

They sought a declaration that the consent judgement of the Lagos High Court dated April 1, 2009 in suit IKD/57/2007 is subsisiting, binding and in force; a declaration that by clause 2 of the consent judgement, the first, second and third respondents conceded the right to the claimants in future to the next chieftaincy title that is due and available to the Lasunwon Ruling House.

They also sought a declaration that the kingmakers, fourth to seventh respondents were bound by the decision in suit IKD/57/2007 as the seventh to tenth defendants and that they cannot now consider any candidate from the Adegorushen branch of the Lasunwon ruling house and a further declaration that the third respondent, having by the aforesaid judgement, been installed as Odofin of Ikorodu cannotin defiance of the judgement, present himself as a candidate for the vacant Ayangburen Royal Chieftaincy title “and he is thereby stopped from contesting any other vacant Chieftaincy title available to the Lasunwon family.                                                                                                  They had therefore prayed the court for an injunction restraining the fifth to tenth respondents by themselves, agents, privies from considering the third respondent nor any candidate from the Adegorushen branch of the Lasunwon Chieftaincy family for the candidature of the vacant Ayangburen.

But delieviring his ruling in the matter, Justice Savage  said the defendants have not breached the order of the court and therefore declined to restrain them.

  • Akobundu’s nomination well deserved, says Orji

The ministerial nomination of Col Austine Akobundu by President Goodluck Jonathan has been described as well deserved by Abia State Governor Theodore Orji.

In a statement by his Special Adviset on Public Communication, Ben Onyechere, Orji chided those criticising the nomination.

He said: “The nomination of  Akobundu is not only timely, but a new vista in the mode and character as well as quality of appointment in President Jonathan’s cabinet, considering his attitude to work and devotion as well as loyalty to service.”

The governor described the nominee as a man whose “zeal for patriotism marks him out as somebody who is properly suited in the life of this administration with the urgent need to unravel and deliver the successes of President Jonathan’s administration to the populace.”

He added that “the insinuation from a familiar quarter that his appointment should not have been recommended by the governor is porous, malicious, repugnant and in fact as usual anti-Abia. It is important to note that the appointment of ministers is a prerogative of the President, bearing the approval of the National Assembly. Moreover, the appointee is not only a high ranking party official, but one who has paid his dues and as such there is nothing wrong with his constituency which is Abia Central as distinct from the immediate past minister of Labour who is from Abia south.”

  • Group faults Obanikoro’s nomination

    Group faults Obanikoro’s nomination

A group, Nigeria United to Save Democracy (NUSADEM) has condemned the nomination of former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro as a ministerial nominee.

It said screening him was a waste of time “because he is not competent”.

The group, which stormed the National Assembly with its petition, said the former minister did not contribute meaningfully to the development of the country but rather misused his position and used the military under his ministry as an agent of terror.

The petition, signed by the joint National Coordinators, Adebayo Adebayo and Toyin Raheem, said: “If a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, can refer to Obanikoro as ‘a desperate sinking man, grasping and thrashing in self inflicted chasm, whose antecedents reek in noisome, vagrant and untidy ruffianism’ then it is obvious that he could no longer be trusted with national responsibilities.

“To preserve the dignity of the hallowed chambers, we call on you to refrain from considering Senator Musiliu Obanikoro for a ministerial position in Nigeria.”

  • Chimamanda gets Grammy nomination

    Chimamanda gets Grammy nomination

YOU may be wondering what the Nigerian novelist’s business is with music, let alone an American award scheme, but knowing that no music is independent of lyrics, Chimamanda Adichie, through one of her works, becomes a stakeholder.

Following her TEDx talk on why “We Should All Be Feminists,” American singer, Beyonce Knowles, incorporated the writer’s essay into her single, which further brought more life to her craft. Thus, the award-winning writer, whose works such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah are being adapted for the cinema, gave verve to Beyonce’s 2013 track, Flawless, which has been nominated for the Grammy.

The nomination for “Album of the Year”, alongside Beyonce, who is described as her fellow feminist, is just yet another achievement for the writer.

Adichie, whose work has been translated into thirty languages, has also appeared in various publications, including The New Yorker, Granta, The O. Henry Prize Stories, the Financial Times, and Zoetrope.

Some of the awards received by the writer include the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction in 2007 and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2008.

Nigerian Sports Award: Nomination excites Greensprings

For its genuine commitment to grassroots sports development coupled with a robust sporting calendar, Greensprings School has once again been nominated for the school sports award category of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award.

Announcing the nominees for this year’s award, General Manager, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Kayode Idowu noted that the panel received overwhelming nominations for the 2014 editions of the award from members of the public adding that it was a tough job collating before the selection of the top three nominees for each category.

Greensprings was nominated alongside, Toybat international School, Lagos and St. Barnabas, Ilorin for the school sports award.

Since winning the maiden edition of the award last year, Greensprings has remained committed to sports development with its annual school sports forum as well as the Greensprings Kanu Football Camp, which also produced two scholarship awardees this year.

Toybat School won the last Channels Kids’ Cup while St. Barnabas emerged winner at the Milo Africa U-13 Championship. But Greensprings also earned some laurels with the school becoming the first private school in Africa to win the annual Keele International Cup in United Kingdom while Musa Alli was also named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship.

An elated Head of Sports, Greensprings School, Oluseyi Oyebode said the school would not relent on its efforts while the nomination would surely spur the school to continue to affect the lives of Nigerian youths. • MEGA: Nomination Committee screens entries

    MEGA: Nomination Committee screens entries

AS the organisers of the Music and Entertainment Awards, Nigeria’s premier gospel music awards, are warming up for the second edition of the awards ceremony scheduled to hold at The Haven, GRA Ikeja, Lagos on Friday, November 14,the  Nomination Committee has begun work on screening hundreds of songs entered for this year’s event.

According to the organisers, the submission of entries, which ran from March 17, to June 14, witnessed over 100% increase from last year, particularly in the Singles category.

In a release, celebrated journalist, publisher and author, Femi Akintunde-Johnson, who is also the Coordinator of the 2014 MEGA’s Central Working Committee (CWC), said: “We hope to empanel the Body of Judges by the end of July – they are to take over the screening from the Nomination Committee; after which, the pre-nominated shortlists shall be released for Public Voting (PV) which accounts for 10% of the final aggregate percentage.”

Driven  by the  vision, flair and robust interest in the positive development of Nigerian entertainment, he further said that Footprints Pub & Media Ltd., an integrated communications outfit (the awards’ executive producer), in the conception, articulation and management of the awards, had evolved a unique relationship with different stakeholders within the Nigerian music community so as to “protect, preserve and maintain the independence, integrity, stability and continuity of the MEGA in perpetuity.”

“In collaboration with the 2014 Central Working Committee (CWC) , a volunteer group of extremely committed and highly successful professionals has taken up the assignment of entrenching a truly comprehensive and highly regarded reward system for the country’s gospel music industry,” he said.

Akintunde-Johnson, who is famously called FAJ, further said that though the organisers don’t encourage posthumous awards, they have resolved to recognise the enormous contributions of the late Nollywood movie maker and director, Amaka Igwe, in “berthing the awards on the rock of MEGA.”

Consequently, he said: “We, therefore, endow the Music Video award ceremony in her name -in the likely absence of the Gospel Movie categories this year.  We also pray for fortitude and divine strength for the families and friends of the first winner of MEGA Best English Medley winner, Kefee (Mrs. Don-Momoh) who left us few weeks ago. May their souls find eternal rest in His bosom.”

In the release, the respected journalist also lamented the seeming apathy towards gospel music in Nigeria. Worried by the number of artistes who, according to him, are wasting away for lack of adequate and sustained exposure and appreciation, he said: “Our media, as if by collective indignation, consign stories, airplay and programmes that have any hint of “gospel” to weekends – often only Sundays. This attitude is largely influenced, we believe, by the belief that “gospel music” needs to be “helped” until it acquires the quality and prevalence of mainstream music. How awfully wrong!”

He added that the forthcoming awards ceremony would further satisfy the yearning for the promotion and celebration of “genuine messengers of the Word and their up- and-coming successors.”
