    Xmas Day: Escapee notorious robber gun down in Ogun

    An escapee member of a robbery gang, who shot and injured the former Divisional Police Officer of Ogbere Division, Mr Adeyinka Akingbade,  was shot dead on Christmas Day in an encounter with police operatives at Ijebu-Ife, Ogun state.

    The suspect, who escaped arrest and fled to Delta state after shooting Adeyinka was placed on the wanted list of the Ogun State Police Command.

    The former Divisional Police Officer was injured by the gang during one of their robbery operations at Itele-Ijebu where the officer engaged them in gun duel.

    The injured officer is still recuperating at an undisclosed hospital till date.

    Police spokesperson Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement, said the police got a tip-off that the suspect was sighted in a drinking joint in Ijebu-Ife but on getting to the location, he had left.

    Abimbola said further search led the police to his in-law’s house where he was shot dead during exchange of fire between him and the Operatives.

    “Luck however ran against him on Christmas day when police operatives received information that he was sighted in a beer parlour at Itawade area of Ijebu-Ife.

    “Upon the information, the policemen swiftly moved to the place, but before getting there, he has left the place.

    “He was however traced to his in-law house where the police operatives caught up with him. Having realised that the game is up, he brought out a pistol and started firing at the policemen.

    “The operatives were left with no other alternative than to fire back consequence upon which he was shot dead.

    “Recovered from him are a locally made pistol, a matchet, assorted charms and a Toyota Highlander with two different registration numbers,” he stated.

    Oyeyemi said the police commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu, lauded the resilience of the policemen in ensuring that the last member of the gang was finally brought down even as it served as further warning signal to any would be criminal that no crime committed in Ogun state will go undetected.

    Residents of Owo and its environs in Ondo State heaved a sigh of relief yesterday as the leader of a gang, identified as Gani ‘Elese’ was shot dead.

    The “notorious” robber and his gang were said to have been threatening the peace of the ancient town for a long time.

    It was learnt Gani was killed in a gun duel with the police at his hideout at Jugbere Camp, a farmstead sharing boundary with the State Forest Reserved.

    Before his death, Gani was said to have claimed responsibility for series of killings in the town.

    He was linked with several secret cult groups.

    The Police Anti-Robbery team from “A” Division in Owo, with the assistance of a vigilance group, acted on a tip-off and moved into the camp where they killed the robbery gang leader.

    Sources said the residents went into jubilation when information filtered into town that Gani had been killed.

    The Ijebu-Owo Police Station was filled with a huge crowd, which eagerly waited to catch a glimpse of his body.

    The crowd hailed the police and the vigilantes for ending the reign of the man they described as “a terrorist”.

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph confirmed expressed appreciation to the public for providing information that led to the successful defeat of the robbery gang leader.

    Vigilant residents arrest suspected notorious robber

    There was animated joy in the Ipaja area of Lagos State penultimate Tuesday after vigilant residents apprehended a suspected notorious robber in the area.

    The man was said to have robbed many traders of their goods in the last few months.

    It was learnt that the suspect who did not disclose his identity usually purchased bulk goods and tricked his victims to accompany him to where his car was parked for collection of money.

    Our correspondent, who was at the scene, gathered that the man would then get in his car pretending he wanted to pick money but instead zoom off with the goods.

    Sources said not a few traders have fallen victim to his tricks and reported him to the police.

    Luck however ran out on him when he made another attempt penultimate Tuesday but was apprehended by traders who had been on the lookout for him.

    He was beaten and stripped before he was handed to men of Gowon Estate Police Division.

    A source, who asked not to be named, said: “The robber had become the nemesis of traders and big store owners in Ipaja and Gowon Estate. He had robbed many traders and escaped in his Honda car on several occasions.

    “Residents succeeded in arresting him today because they had been on his trail for some months now. As usual, he zoomed off with the goods he stole from traders at the All Seasons Plaza at Federal Bus Stop, Ipaja, but hit an okada rider when he ran into traffic and was arrested by angry residents who gave him a hot chase.”

    “The robber had also dispossessed shop owners of bulk goods at gun point in Gowon Estate and I think his arrest today was possible because his cup was full,” said another resident who identified herself simply as Adekemi.

    Policemen attached to Gowon Estate Division who were on patrol in the area however rescued the robber from being set ablaze by a mob.

    A number of phones used by residents to record the scene were seized by policemen and later returned to their owners after the photographs of the suspected robber had been deleted.

    The suspect was later taken away in a police van belonging to Gowon Estate Division.

    Mob kill notorious armed robber in Minna

    A notorious armed robber skilled in terrorising Shango, a suburb of Minna, the Niger State Capital was on Thursday night beaten to death by angry mob.

    The 30 years old armed robber who was identified as Ali was said to have been caught during one of his operations.

    Residents of Shango disclosed that Ali and his gang have been terrorizing the area and giving residents sleepless nights for a long time.

    Luck however ran out of Ali when some residents out of anger decided to take the law into their hands, caught and beat him to death when he came to steal alongside a member of his gang who escaped.

    The corpse of the deceased was discovered by the residents of the area early in the morning close to the Shango primary school tied to an electric pole and alerted the police, who arrived the scene and carried the body away.

    Gambo Musa, a resident of the area said, “We saw his body tied to the pole early in the morning, when we came to pray at 5:30am. We can now sleep peacefully with our eyes at least closed. This Ali has been a problem to us for some time now, now we can rest from his activities with his gang.”

    When contacted, the police public Relation Officer, Bala Elkana confirmed the incident saying Ali who was a hardened armed robber was killed by some residents of the area, who took the law into their hands and are currently at large.

    “The Police discovered those that master minded the killing of the notorious armed robber during a house to house investigation. As I am talking to you, we have been able to ascertain who the ring leader is. It is a case of Homicide and the Police is presently after them. Even though, it is a case of armed robbery, nobody is allowed to take laws into his or her hand, it should be left for the law enforcement agency.”
