FA Cup: Forest beat Brighton in penalty shoot out

Third in the Premier League, and now into the last four of the FA Cup. This truly could become a season for the ages for Nottingham Forest, who are routinely showing a character and resilience that few teams can match.

This latest FA Cup win, against an in-form Brighton, was their third consecutive penalty shoot-out victory in the competition. That statistic alone speaks volumes of the mental strength of Nuno Espirito Santo’s players, and indeed the quality of Matz Sels, their hugely impressive goalkeeper.

Sels saved twice in the shoot-out, denying Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gómez, to allow Forest captain Ryan Yates the opportunity of winning the match from 12 yards. It was a chance he took with absolute relish, before sprinting the length of the field to celebrate in front of the travelling supporters. The Forest fans continue to dream the wildest of dreams, and they sang here about going to both the Champions League and to Wembley.

Nottingham Forest join race for sensational Osimhen

Nottingham Forest could launch an audacious bid that may see the Reds usurping Manchester United to the signature of in-demand Super Eagles attacker, Victor Osimhen at the next summer transfer window.

The Super  Eagles striker has been linked with a move to Manchester United as one of their targets for the summer, but they risk losing out on him to one of their Premier League rivals – who could have a significant advantage by the time the transfer window opens.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Nottingham Forest are eyeing a summer move for Osimhen, as they target a heavyweight striker signing in order to be able to compete in next season’s Champions League – provided that they do indeed finish inside the Premier League top five at the end of the current campaign.

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has made it clear that he wants a world class number nine added to Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad for next season. They have also shown interest in Viktor Gyokeres, who is another striker that Man United have on their shortlist, although he is not keen on a move to the City Ground.

Osimhen moved on loan to Galatasaray last summer after falling out of favour at Napoli, although he is projected to return to the Serie A side at the end of the season, at which point he will become available again. And it is at that time that Man United have been expected to make their move to address their goal scoring woes.

However, there has been some jeopardy creeping in over the last few days, and now Man United look to have been handed another blow in their bid to bring Osimhen, who has 26 goals in 30 appearances for Galatasaray this season, to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window with the supposed entrance of Nottingham Forest

With the current rating of Nottingham Forest Even if they qualify for the Champions League, they could find it tough to bring in a high-level striker in the summer, although that will not stop their efforts.

If Osimhen’s move to Nottingham Forest sails through, the Nigerian will have the chance to reunite with his compatriots duo of Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina.

EPL: Chris Wood hits hat-trick as Forest smash seven past Brighton

Chris Wood scored a hat-trick as Nottingham Forest delivered an emphatic response to last weekend’s 5-0 defeat at Bournemouth by hitting seven past Brighton at the City Ground.

The loss at Vitality Stadium was Forest’s first since early December but they roared back to winning ways in front of their own supporters, registering their biggest-ever Premier League victory against the sorry Seagulls.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side took a 12th-minute lead when Lewis Dunk inadvertently turned Morgan Gibbs-White’s low cross into his own net from close range.

Gibbs-White doubled the host’s advantage with a glancing header from Anthony Elanga’s corner, and it was 3-0 just after the half-hour mark when Wood nodded home Elanga’s cross for his 15th Premier League goal of the season – his most in a single campaign in the competition.

Brighton were unlucky not to score themselves before half-time, Yankuba Minteh shooting straight at Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels in a one-on-one and Danny Welbeck’s effort failing to cross the goalline after striking the underside of the crossbar.

Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler made a triple half-time change in an effort to stem the flow of Forest attacks, but Wood tapped home another Elanga delivery to make it 4-0 after 64 minutes.

And just five minutes later, Tariq Lamptey wrestled Gibbs-White to the ground at a Forest corner to give the New Zealand striker a golden opportunity to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

The 33-year-old sent Bart Verbruggen the wrong way to make it 5-0, before Neco Williams made it six after latching on to a loose ball deep inside the area.

There was still time for Jota Silva to get in on the act, firing home a low shot from Verbruggen’s misplaced pass in added time.

The win lifts Forest level on points with second-placed Arsenal – who play Manchester City on Sunday – while Brighton stay ninth.

  • EPL: Nottingham Forest beat Ipswich Town 1-0 at City Ground

EPL: Nottingham Forest beat Ipswich Town 1-0 at City Ground

Chris Wood scored his ninth Premier League goal of the season as Nottingham Forest got back to winning ways against Ipswich Town.

The 32-year-old was forced to wait until the 49th minute for his first effort on goal, which came from the penalty spot after Sam Szmodics brought down Jota Silva.

Wood’s penalty means he has now equalled Bryan Roy’s club record total of 24 Premier League goals.

Forest came close to adding a second four minutes later but Arijanet Muric tipped brilliantly on to the crossbar.

Substitute Jack Clarke looked to keep Ipswich’s three-game unbeaten run alive but his swept effort inside the box was timid and proved no danger to Matz Sels.

Kieran McKenna’s side started the game at the City Ground with confidence and Omari Hutchinson’s drive at goal forced Matz Sels into a fine save low to his right.

After two defeats on the bounce, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were flat in the first half but flew out of the blocks for the second period.

After a well worked move, Silva found himself just inside the box as Szmodics was over-enthusiastic in his attempts to win the ball before Wood dispatched his spot kick high into the middle of the goal.

Wood’s penalty means Forest have risen to sixth in the league table, while Ipswich sit 19th.

EPL: Saka stars as Arsenal beat Forest to end winless run

Arsenal got their title challenge back on track by beating Nottingham Forest to secure a first win in five Premier League matches.

The Gunners’ form has dipped in recent weeks amid a tough fixture schedule and a number of injuries, which meant Mikel Arteta’s side were nine points behind leaders Liverpool before kick-off on Saturday.

Arsenal dominated from the outset at Emirates Stadium and Bukayo Saka gave them the lead after 15 minutes, when he exchanged passes with Martin Odegaard before beating two defenders and slamming a strike into the top corner.

Thomas Partey, who came on as a half-time substitute, doubled the hosts’ lead when he curled in from 20 yards, before youngster Ethan Nwaneri added a third late on to secure the win.

Forest have been the surprise package of the season so far and came into this match with the same number of points (19) as the Gunners. However, they struggled to get into the game and their best chances were tame headers from Ryan Yates and Nicolas Dominguez.

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber thought he had put the hosts in front when he tapped in from close range before Saka’s opener, but Mikel Merino was offside in the build-up.

This match was Arteta’s 250th in charge of Arsenal in all competitions – and he will hope victory sparks a run of form that will help his side close the gap on their rivals at the top.

JUST IN: Nottingham Forest handed four-point deduction for financial rules breach

Nottingham Forest have been docked four points for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules, BBC Sport understands.

The immediate loss of points mean Forest drop below Luton Town into the Premier League’s relegation zone.

They are the second top-flight team to be penalised for PSR breaches after Everton lost 10 points in November, which was reduced to six on appeal.

Forest, who are likely to appeal the ruling, had a hearing on 7 and 8 March.

Premier League clubs can lose £105m over three seasons – £35m per campaign – but, because Forest spent two years of the assessment period in the Championship, their maximum loss was only permitted to be £61m.

The league’s rules state any appeals process should “conclude no later than and if possible some time before 24 May”, five days after the final day of this season.

Forest were charged in January and the Premier League said in a statement that both they and Everton “confirmed that they are in breach of the league’s profitability and sustainability rules”.

Forest, who hired leading sports lawyer Nick de Marco to defend them, are thought to have based their case around the sale of Brennan Johnson to Tottenham Hotspur in September.

The move, worth more than £45m, took place after the accounting deadline but Forest argue selling Johnson at a later date allowed them to earn a higher fee than if they had sold him by 30 June.
