NPFL/ StarTimes: Enyimba’s Yemastar dares Ilechukwu  ahead of Oriental Derby

Coach Yemi Daniel Olanrewaju said no quarter would be given when he lead Enyimba  to face Rangers of Enugu  in this weekend’s  NPFL/ StarTimes  Matchday 35 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, adding  his respect for the Flying Antelopes’ coach Fidelis Ilechukwu  would count for nothing.

Though admitted  Ilechukwu as a  senior colleague, Olarenwaju admitted :“But everyone has to defend his club and try to get the job done

“He(Ilechukwu)  is a great guy. I have a lot of respect for and nothing will change no matter the results in Enugu.

“Ilechukwu is a senior and more like a big brother to me. He left MFM when I got there and we have a good relationship.”

Olarenwaju  described the all-important fixture Matchday 35 as possible decider , adding:“ It would be  a tough game, league decider if you ask me. Rangers look like the favourites but we  would fight till the end.

“I don’t think I know them much. The way they started the season is not the way they are playing now and the formation is also different with personnels.”

This lack of deep knowledge of the Enyimba team coupled with their inability to defeat the Flying Antelopes in Aba is not something Olarenwaju  is worried about.

“If our two points had not been unfortunately deducted, we should be on the same points with them by  now,” he said.

Described as one of the new generation coaches in the Nigeria football ecosystem,  the 32-year-old Olarenwaju fondly called Yemastar by admirers, is a young Turk with ship-sized ambitions and you only have to watch his animated gesticulations on the side lines during matches to agree with this tag.

Promoted to the position of Head Coach in the wake of Finidi George’s appointment as Super Eagles manager, Olarenwaju  is unfazed by the  huge  task thrown at  his young coaching shoulders. He is barely five years into the business after starting off with Magate in 2019.

Asked if this was going to be his season of big statement as a coach, Olarenwaju  would be the last to  claim  credit for Enyimba’s performance so far.

He said: “I don’t think it is a season of a big statement for me, I don’t want to praise myself but I have done well with the club even before being appointed after my big ‘bro’ Finidi left for  Eagles. I have handled the team for two months while he was away at AFCON and many qualifiers matches and everything was going on smoothly.

“It is not  an easy task to work as coach of a club in a city where the club is hugely loved and expected to return laurels every season. The demands are not lost on him but he would rather dwell on the positives.

“I feel good to be the head coach of a big club like Enyimba. I really want to thank the management led by ‘King’ Nwankwo Kanu for the trust and believe. I also wish to thank  the Aba fans for the massive love and support I get from them always. It has been fun and interesting with support of everyone out there.”

Enyimba are two points behind Rangers as both teams go into the first of the last four games to end the season.

NPFL/ StarTimes: Ogunmodede urges Remo Stars to push for title

As the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League reaches its climax, Remo Stars head coach Daniel Ogunmodede has admonished his players to keep their heads, remain focused and fight till the end.

Remo Stars will travel to Lafia to be the guest of Lobi Stars of Makurdi in the Matchday 35 encounter. The match will air live on StarTimes’ Beta Sports channel 244.

The gifted gaffer was displeased with his wards’ performance against Kano Pillars at Remo Stadium in Ikenne despite winning the encounter narrowly.

Ogunmodede did not hide his feelings admitting that his side was lucky to beat Kano Pillars by 2-1.

“It was unbelievable and Incredible. I never thought we could get the maximum three points with what happened in the game,” Ogunmodede said. “I think we had a not-too-good match but I must salute the courage of the boys and their resilience to keep fighting till the end.

“Obviously, we had a poor game. After we scored in the sixth minute, we went to sleep and we were seriously dealt with in the early stages of the second half. It’s obvious they planned to rush in the opening period of the second half and it paid off with a blunder from my goalkeeper. It’s one of those things and the team generally didn’t do expectedly well.”

Ogunmodede however believes that the game against Lobi Stars will be a different ball game.

“What is at stake is high. We are almost there. We just needed to work harder and keep fighting until the end.”

Remo Stars currently occupy third position in the league, which airs live on StarTimes, with 59 points from 34 matches closely following Rangers and Enyimba who will slug it out this weekend in Enugu.

For Remo Stars to go top of the table this weekend, a specific set of circumstances must unfold. Firstly, Enugu Rangers and Enyimba must play out a draw, ensuring neither team gains an advantage. Secondly, Remo Stars need to win their match against Lobi Stars by a significant margin of seven goals to surpass Rangers’ goal difference and secure the top spot.

NPFL: Biffo  vows to  stop  Flying Antelopes at MJ Arena

Head coach, Sporting Lagos Abdullahi Biffo has reaffirmed his stance that the  self-styled Noisy Neighbours would  hand   visiting Enugu Rangers the  short end of the stick  in their NPFL Matchday 34 tie this weekend even as  NPFL matches  are being aired  on  Beta Sports channel 244 on StarTimes.

The Lagos-based side suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Rivers United in a matchday 33 fixture last weekend but Biffo in a chat with the club’s media noted that his boys would come good against the Flying Antelopes in the must win fixture.

“We are very unhappy with the result in Port Harcourt,” he told the club’s Media. “We made a few mistakes and agreed that they can never repeat themselves.

“Now, we’ve accepted the result and are ready to use Sunday’s game against Rangers to win those three points back.”

Incidentally, the Flying Antelopes  remains the  team to beat as the 2023/24 NPFL  hits home stretch.

Following their  emphatic 3-0 home  victory  against  Bayelsa United last weekend, the coach Fidelis Ilechukwu-tutored Rangers maintained its top position with sixty points from 33 matches having won 18, drawn 6, and lost nine, scoring 49 goals and leaking 31 while defending champions, Enyimba are close in second spot with 56 points from the same number of matches.

“Bayelsa United was challenging, but we came prepared for all of their antics and thanked God for His grace as we won by a good margin.

  • NPFL: Rangers stake unbeaten streak against Katsina United

NPFL: Rangers stake unbeaten streak against Katsina United

After suffering three successive losses for the first time this season, Plateau United will have the chance to end their  slump when they face Doma United today while league leaders, Enugu Rangers will have their hands full as they seek to extend their unbeaten run in  Katsina as Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 29 fixtures take centre stage this weekend.

Plateau United have been among the standout performers in the league and they won their opening 10 home fixtures before Shooting Stars ended the streak when they held them came to grab a goalless draw. Things have not remained the same ever since and after they were beaten 2-1 by Katsina United, they lost 2-1 in Jos to Akwa United before the Wednesday defeat to Abia Warriors in Umuahia.

The Peace Boys have slipped to the fifth spot with 44 points and they are in dire need of the maximum points to put their determined zeal to qualify for the CAF inter club competition back to life.

The hard work of  the club’s  head coach, Mbwas Mangut and General Manager, Habila Hosea Mutla,  would only be made revealing if the players can complement it with a win against Doma United.

Doma United too ended their string of poor results on Wednesday with the 1-0 away win in Uyo against Akwa United. It was their first win in the second stanza after over 10 games winless streak. Abubakar Bala and his wards have a lot of work to do to make it back to back victory.

In another game also slated for today, Remo Stars host Akwa United in Ikenne in a game that promises to produce thrills and fireworks. Remo Stars got a point off Gombe United in Gombe on Tuesday to slip to fourth with 46 points  but with a game at hand while Akwa United surrendered their three game unbeaten run with a 1-0 home loss to Doma United. The loss saw the Promise Keepers roll back to the relegation zone in Mohammed Babaganaru’s first game in charge.

On Sunday, Heartland FC will host Sporting Lagos probably in Owerri to see if they can salvage what is left of the season. The Naze Millionaires fell to a late goal in Yenagoa against Bayelsa United at midweek. It was almost the same situation for Sporting Lagos who were held to a 1-1 draw by third placed Lobi Stars.

In Kano, Kano Pillars will face Shooting Stars barely four days after their humiliating loss to Enyimba in Aba while Enugu Rangers will trade tackles with Katsina United with their 10 games unbeaten record at stake.

The Flying Antelopes are atop the league table with 51 points and they square up against the Chanji Boys who are seventh with 41 points.

Kwara United will be eager to return to winning ways when they host Bendel Insurance in Ilorin. The Harmony Boys were beaten by Shooting Stars on Wednesday in Ibadan while Niger Tornadoes bruised the Benin Arsenals 3-1 also at midweek.

The star game of the week is definitely the tie at the Lafia City Stadium between Lobi Stars (third) and second placed Enyimba. With Rangers playing away, the two teams will fancy their chances of drawing level at the top with the Flying Antelopes.

In another affair, Sunshine Stars will welcome Bayelsa United to Akure this weekend. The Owena Whales were beaten midweek by Enugu Rangers while Bayelsa United needed a stoppage time goal to beat Heartland FC.

The last encounter is between Abia Warriors and Rivers United. The game has been postponed to a later date due to the Pride of Rivers’ CAF Inter club competition participation. They have five games at hand.

  • NPFL sparkles with vanishing must win-at-home virus

NPFL sparkles with vanishing must win-at-home virus

A section of followers of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) appear overly excited by results of away teams and are given to adjudging the league to have improved when teams win on the road. On the other hand, they hit hard at organisers when all home teams win their games.

To some analysts, wins away from home are indicative of fair and firm officiating, which they conclude is a benchmark for a developed league. And to these, total home wins on a matchday suggests that Referees have been compromised or intimidated.

None of the above scenarios are perfect and absolute as there are exceptions to all. Firstly,  it has been argued by some that the major reason for home and away routines of the league is to enable all clubs that advantage of their home ground. It is for this reason that mostly exceptionally strong squads grind out results no matter where they play.

In our unique environment where several factors come to play, strong squads find themselves struggling at away games after travelling long distances on bad roads that leave them knackered.

The human error factor on the part of Referees also contributes to the blips in expectations even as it is not out of place to have manipulated officiating occasioned by home supporters’ shenanigans.

The stats since the resumption of the second stanza defies popular projections of what usually obtains at this time of the season.  Usually, the last lap of the season sees lots of desperate acts by teams to win by all means to either place in the continental ticket bracket or escape relegation.

The most astonishing result has been those of Bayelsa United,  Niger Tornadoes, Akwa United and Doma United. So far, there has been 11 away wins from Matchday 20 to 28 with Heartland,  Akwa United,  Doma United and Niger Tornadoes featuring in at least two defeats at home.

On the other hand,  Akwa United and Niger Tornadoes have also popped up on two away wins respectively in the period under review. Plateau United which recorded the biggest away win of 5-1 against Heartland on Matchday 22 would go on to lose at home 1-2 to Akwa United on Matchday 27.

At the bottom of the log, Heartland has been the donor team of the season both in number of defeats at home and goals conceded.

Another interesting perspective to the stats from Matchday 20-28 I’d the number of drawn games which has reduced the home supremacy syndrome. There has been 20 drawn games in 82 fixtures covering Matchday 20-28. This means that home teams have not been able to win in 31 games in nine matchdays.

Chairman of the NPFL,  Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye , described the development as evidence that “the NPFL is increasingly evolving into a very competitive league and that the zero tolerance for intimidation of Match officials is yielding expected results.

Elegbeleye commended Referees for their courage in interpreting the rules to the book, remarking that, “While we have called out those that performed below par, it is fair to also commend the rest who have been at their best.

“I am particularly proud of the officials who took charge of Heartland vs Plateau United on Matchday 22 and those in charge of Bendel Insurance vs Niger Tornadoes in Wednesday’s Matchday 28. They showed exceptional courage in the face of home supporters pressure,” declared the NPFL Chairman.

Bamidele Johnson, a follower of Shooting Stars for decades, expressed delight at the competitive direction of the league. Johnson, who played a significant role in the organisation of the hugely acclaimed Naija Super 8 tournament that drew a large crown in Lagos, would go on to praise the NPFL players for defying vociferous home crowds to post good results.

“It is a remarkable feat to travel and win amidst hostile home crowd and I am delighted that the NPFL is now having a good share of such results,” Johnson told NPFL Media.

On a post in his Facebook page,  Bimbo Adeola, a core Rangers International supporter celebrated the Enugu side’s  nine –game  unbeaten run including five on the road. Rangers have won away at Doma United,  Niger Tornadoes and Heartland with two draws, one each at home and away.

In a display of rare confidence in the organisation of the NPFL,  Adeola, a Sports Journalist and Media Entrepreneur wrote: “We are Rangers, we win everywhere we go.”

Besides scoring 13 goals the striker has also provided two assists in 24 appearances for the defending champions this season.

NPFL sanctions Gombe United over unruly behaviour

Gombe United have been docked three points and three goals from their total accrued for the season in a move the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL)  said was ‘ pursuant of its zero tolerance for assault on match officials’.

The Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, Davidson Owumi, who signed the notice,  warned other clubs to ensure the safety of match officials assigned to their games or face serious consequences.

Officials in the Matchday 26 fixture between Gombe United and visiting Akwa United were found to have been physically attacked by fans at the end of the match at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe on Sunday,  March 17.

The NPFL in a Summary Jurisdiction notice issued to Gombe United said its findings included that Bright Nwosu, the Center Referee, Abdullahi Indabawa, the AR1, Friday Abu Emeje AR2, and Musa Hussainy Talle, the 4th Official were assaulted by the club fans.

“In addition to the points deduction,  the NPFL also imposed a total fine of N3million on the club made up of N1million each for failure to provide  adequate and effective security, for throwing objects unto the field of play and compensatory payments to the four match officials at N250,000 each.”

The NPFL also issued an order closing the Pantami Stadium to fans of Gombe United for the next three (3) home games.

The NPFL further said: “Gombe United has 48 hours from the date of receipt of the sanctions to accept in writing to submit to the rulings or elect to face a disciplinary panel in accordance with Rule C26.”
