  • Transfer window: Plateau Utd, Kano Pillars get busy

Strong indications abound that the current NPFL transfer window which opened on Monday, will be full of activities.

Less than 24 hours after the window opened league defending champions Plateau United apparently bent on fortifying the squad for the challenges ahead, have grabbed the services of former U-20 ace Jesse Akila.  Akila crossed over from MFM FC.

But the Jos side are not only in business of getting new players but have equally sent four packing.

Leading the pack of those shown the door is Nigeria international and former Victoria Setubal and Stal Rzeszów of Poland right back Terna Suswam.

Suswam made about 56 appearances for the Polish club between 2014 and 2016 scoring two goals,  He was called up for the Nigeria camp prior to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa by coach Lars Lagerbäck, after helping the national B-team win the 2010 WAFU Nations Cup.

The other players sent packing alongside Suswam are Fortune Omoniwari, Abdulwahab Afolabi and Sadiq Yusuf.

Kano Pillars on the other hand have grabbed the duo of Kalu Orji and Ikenna Hilary while former FC Ifeanyiuba star Jimoh oni is now in the payroll of Abia Warriors.

Reacting to the new transfer window, Chairman of club owners Isaac Danladi told SCORENigeria said clubs are now expected to fortify their ranks ahead of the second stanza of the league.

“It is good that registration of new players has begun. It is a way for teams to compliment what they have on ground ahead of this interesting NPFL season,” he said.

“If you have followed the league closely, you cannot predict who will win it and who will drop to the second-tier league because the gap between clubs is so close that a victory can push you to the top, while two consecutive defeats can bring you to the relegation zone, that makes the league to be interesting.

Meanwhile Plateau United will attempt to turn the table in the CAF Confederation cup tie 2nd leg play-off against

USM Alger today in Algiers.  The Jos based side who chose to play the first leg at the ground of MFM dubbed the Temple, emerged 2-1 victors but will need to hold their own against USM Alger who are likely to fire from all angles today  with intent to turn the table.  Today’s tie will be decided at the Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 at 18.00 hours.

Rangers commence screening of players for Team B

Rangers International Football Club of Enugu have commenced screening of players for the club’s Team B, its General Manager, Davidson Owumi, disclosed said on Monday.

Owumi told newsmen in Enugu this was an effort to make the club a formidable force in the 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

He added that the move would also help to ensure that the club has budding talents which would graduate to the main team from time to time.

“This screening kicks off on Monday (Nov. 20), and we are looking at talents within the ages of 15 and 19, and this exercise will be supervised by coach Olugbenga Ogunbote.

“The reason for this Team B is to ensure that budding talents from the South-East geo-political zone and other zones of the country are given opportunities to showcase their talents.

“We are however looking at having the best three players from the three senatorial zones of Enugu state to form the bedrock of the Team B.’’

Owumi said players from Enugu State and the neighbouring states will form 70 per cent of the team.

“The remaining 30 per cent is reserved for very talented footballers from other parts of the country and the world at large,’’ he said.

Owumi said the club management hopes to identify, nurture and develop local talents which would in the near future graduate seamlessly into the main team.

“The selected players will be on stipends while those of school age from other states would be enrolled into schools in Enugu where we have some understanding.

“Already, three players from A-10 Padora FC of Coal Camp have been penciled down to be looked at, with some of the young players that could not make the cut when the screening for the main team ended on Friday,’’ the GM said.

He said the club management was also working on appointing an Administrative Secretary for the club who must be an ex-Rangers player.

“Such a person must have gone through the National Institute of Sports (NIS), and he is to help inculcate the Rangers philosophy into the young players,’’ Owumi said.

  • NPFL: pitch darkness

It’s one of those days that Hardball is hobbled by headline. For a long moment, even hours, you just cannot put a handle on your title. Sometimes every bit of the piece may have taken their natural sequence and fallen into place but you still do not have a suitable head. Imagine having a headless body in your hands!

But what you see above (NPFL: pitch dark) happens to be a passable alternative after toying with about half a dozen others. Of course NPFL stands for Nigeria Professional Football League; meaning top football as we know it in Nigeria today. Though there are other lower rung leagues, they may be said to be inconsequential compared to the NPFL which is the equivalent of the English Professional Football League, EPL.

Now, the above title has been triggered by the recent retrogression of the Nigeria’s premier football league since the beginning of the current season. The local football managed by the League Management Company, LMC, has actually seen some modest improvement with the coming of the LMC in the last five years or so. But the modest gains are now being eroded gradually.

For instance, since the beginning of the current season (which seems interminable and winding), football matches have disappeared from television as Supersports (the South African cable network) which aired it suddenly stopped. And there is no official reason till date. Why our boastful Nigeria Television Authority, NTA (Africa’s largest network) cannot air at least some local league matches, must be a technical mystery.

But the story is that while many African countries’ premier league are viewed live across the continent, Nigeria, the giant of Africa can be said to be playing football in the dark. This explains the title above, “Pitch dark”. NPFL must be among the very few major national leagues in the entire world today not aired on television; if not live, at least recorded. It’s so, so primitive.

The straight analogy is playing football in the dark. And the dark result is that the league is fast becoming comical, if not farcical in which teams commit criminality on home turfs in the bid to win at all cost.

Here is a sad checklist: hardly any away victories; referees toy with regulation time; probably more penalties are awarded here than in any other league; abuse of the offside rule and stopping of matches abruptly to stop a goal-bound move. A general criminal abuse of discretion by obviously compromised referees.

The stench now stinks to the heavens that even LMC officials hold their noses. Some referees were axed recently. But that’s silly solution to say it nicely; let’s stop playing football in the dark. Simple!

  • NPFL top scorer Odey turns down Genk trial offer

NPFL top scorer Odey turns down Genk trial offer

Top scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Stephen Odey has turned down an offer of trial from Belgium side Genk in the summer.

Odey was invited by the team for trails in the summer, but the 19-year-old who has scored 14 goals for MFM FC rejected their offer.

”He won’t be attending trials anywhere in Europe. Not only in Belgium, we also got offers from Denmark but we won’t take any of them. Genk were most serious but Odey won’t be going for trial,” a source close to the player told Owngoalnigeria.com.

”The one thing I can tell you is that he will most likely leave in the summer. Talks with some teams are already at an advanced stage, unless an offer comes in from Europe, he will most likely move to a top team in Africa.

”His manager has made it clear, he wants to cash in on his form to help him move abroad but at the same time, It’s not just about going abroad, it’s about getting the right deal for the player who still needs to develop further .“

Eguavoen must ensure Sunshine stays in NPFL

    •Negotiations not concluded yet

The major task of the yet to be contracted new Technical Adviser of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, Austin Eguavoen is to ensure that the club is not relegated and maintain their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) status at the end of the season that would be on break this week.

SportingLife gathered exclusively from Ondo State government top sources in Akure that the former Super Eagles coach met with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State last week and contractual talks are still in progress but it was evidently clear that Eguavoen would take over the team at the start of the second stanza of the ongoing NPFL before the end of this month.

“Austin Eguavoen met with the state governor last week and the governor has approved his taking over of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure. You know that Sunshine Stars is a big club and Eguavoen too is a big coach. So there is need for time to iron out the deal very well so that we can achieve the desired results we crave for.

“He (Eguavoen) needs to travel (to America) to meet with his family and discuss with them about the new job before he can settle down. We are looking at a period like the beginning of the second half of the league for him to take over the team when all the contractual agreements have been sorted out anyway.

“The governor has told him that the club must not be relegated this season. So his first assignment is to ensure that Sunshine Stars stays in Nigeria Professional Football League after then other things can follow like fighting for a continental ticket. But his primary assignment is for the club to stay in the elite division of the Nigerian league”, a top official from the state government disclosed yesterday.

  • NPFL: Stakes high as Rohr set to watch MFM, El-kanemi clash

NPFL: Stakes high as Rohr set to watch MFM, El-kanemi clash

The stakes would be high on Sunday as Super Eagles gaffer, Gernot Rohr is expected to be in the stands to watch the match between MFM FC and El-Kanemi Warriors in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match between the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title hopefuls will be played at the Agege Stadium, in one of the biggest fixtures of matchday 18.

MFM FC, who lost 4-0 to Nasarawa United in their mid-week fixture in Lafia, will be looking to maintain their impressive winning streak against El-Kanemi Warriors.

It was the second time they had conceded four goals this season.

On their part, the Maiduguri warriors are yet to record a win or grab a point, away from home this term.

Rohr’s eyes is sure to be glued especially on the league’s top scorer Stephen Odey, who has scored in every game at the ‘Soccer Temple’ so far this season.

This fixture will be particularly exciting as Odey who has scored 13 goals, could set a new record in the NPFL if he bags a brace in his 15th appearance.

Also El-Kanemi Warriors could also go top of the log for the first time if they manage to nick this one.
