‘Thankful’ Insurance seek Edo Gov’t intervention to recover in NPFL

Ahead of their Nigeria Premier Football League  (NPFL)  Matchday 15 fixture against Plateau United in Benin this weekend, players and officials of Bendel Insurance has thank  Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for keeping steadfast with the team despite their precarious situation at the bottom of the table.

The Benin Arsenal have been struggling all season culminating in the recent  resignation of Monday Odigie but  some  players said the fatherly  support of  Governor Okpebholo since he came on board has given them the necessary fillip to fight their way out of the relegation zone even as they made  clarion call on the state’s  number one citizen not to relent on his concerted efforts to keep the team out of the waters.

“Nobody is happy with our present position on the  NPFL table and we must thank our amiable Governor Monday Okpebholo who has shown so much enthusiasm towards our plight since he was sworn into office,” a member of the coaching crew who craved anonymity, told our correspondent on the team’s  return from Lafia on Thursday where they lost to  2-1 to Nasarawa United.

“But for the assistance of  Governor Okpebholo, we would have found it difficult to honour our last four matches because we were barely surviving before he came on board

“ But going forward, I think we need a well- structured management team in place  so that all necessary  logistics can be put in place towards the success of the team.

Governor Okpebholo has already shown that he has the interest of Insurance at heart, we are only seeking  further intervention so as to boost the morale of the team,” he added.

Speaking in the same vein, one of the players signed to bolster the chances of Insurance  in the on-going campaign, said the team  can  overcome their current difficult  with the firm  support of Governor Okpebholo, adding  the entire players have resolved  to  work their socks  starting with this weekend’s home game against the  visiting Plateau United.

“Of course, we can get  better  and this is even  more important  with the kind of support we are getting  from Governor Okpebholo,” he stated matter-of-factly. “What  we need more is  motivation  for this team because without adequate  financial support, it’s difficult to cope with the stress of playing in the NPFL.

“We came  back from Lafia where we narrowly lost to Nasarawa United   only on Thursday and on Saturday, we are facing  Plateau United.

“ I have no doubt that  we can bounce back  to our winning ways   but we can  only succeed  with  the full support of  the people and government of Edo State  and particularly, Governor Okpebholo,” he added.

Epic derbies in Owerri, Jos as NPFL hits Matchday 13

With Enyimba away on continental assignment, battle ground  will shift to the Oriental derby in Owerri between Heartland and Rangers and the North Central derby in Jos as NPFL Matchday 13 fixtures take centre stage this weekend, writes TUNDE LIADI

It is weekend of another exciting Nigeria Premier Football League games as Matchday 13 fixtures take centre stage across 10 venues.

The Oriental derby between Heartland  of Owerri and Rangers is the headline fixture for the weekend with the battle of relegation threatened teams: Shooting Stars versus Bayelsa United and Plateau United versus Nasarawa United are other games to lookout for.

The headline fixture of the week is no doubt the Oriental derby between Heartland and Rangers at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri today (Saturday).

The Flying Antelopes have  dominated this fixture in the past two seasons but the arrival of Emmanuel Amuneke as the club’s Technical Manager might  change the narratives and this fixture is a veritable platform to start that.

Heartland have been on upward leaps  with three wins and  a draw  in the last four games and they are up against Rangers who are unbeaten in five games and are led by Fidelis Ilechukwu who is a former coach of the Naze Millionaires.

In Jos, Plateau United will host Nasarawa United in the first of three home games without their fans. It is a North Central derby but the Peace Boys  will be devoid of their fans who serve as the 12th  man following the incident that happened after their last home game with Rangers International FC.

The three points chalked off Plateau United as a result of the crowd violence which is subject to appeal has landed Plateau United in the 17th  spot with 12 points and the Mbwas Mangut led side would be under immense pressure to win so as to return to the top half that they rightly belong.

Shooting Stars will host under-fire Ladan Bosso led Bayelsa United in Ibadan in a game a defeat does not bode well for the former Flying Eagles coach and the technical crew. The Oluyole Warriors with Gbenga Ogunbote in charge are also on the lookout for the three points with just three points separating them from the drop zone though they are 12th with 15 points.

In Maiduguri, El Kanemi Warriors will hope to add to the pains of Akwa United.

The Borno Armies are fifth on the table with 19 points and could break into the top three if other results go in their way with third place Enyimba (20 points) on continental tie duties in the CAF Confederation Cup while fourth-placed Rangers with 19 points will face a banana peel tie in Owerri against Heartland.

In Minna, Niger Tornadoes will seek another home win when they face Ikorodu City who have gone on three games unbeaten streak and have won all their last four home games in Lagos. It promises to be an epic encounter. Both are ninth and eighth on the log in that order with the same 19 points.

Bendel Insurance lost their head coach, Monday Odigie who resigned  only yesterday following string of poor  results made worse by the three points deduction by the NPFL following crowd violence after Kano Pillars clash recently.

The Benin Arsenal will trade tackles with Kwara United without a head coach and are still plagued by relegation as they are bottom of the log with just nine points.

Katsina United will host league leaders, Remo Stars at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium. The Sky Blue Stars narrowly escaped defeat at home to Rivers United last weekend and against an erratic Chanji Boys they must be ready to fight throughout the duration of the game to earn at least a point.

Lobi Stars Technical Director, Dan Amokachi and his wards will welcome Kano Pillars to Lafia today.

The Pride of Benue narrowly lost 1-0 to Sunshine Stars in Ijebu Ode last time out and with just 12 points from 12 games, they are in dire need of a win against wounded Sai Masu Gida who are eager to recoup the lost points at home to Heartland FC.

Finidi George and his men who  almost got their groove back last weekend in the goalless draw with Remo Stars in Ikenne, will face  the  Umuchineke Boys (Abia Warriors)  in front of their fans needing a home win to win back their confidence.

Iroha seeks corporate support  for NPFL

Former Nigeria international Ben Iroha has praised  the chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) , Hon.  Gbenga Elegbeleye, declaring that  ‘he has changed the face of the league’.

Iroha stressed that with corporate support  for the NPFL,  home-based players would be well paid which would invariably  help the Super Eagles on the long run.

The US- based former Super Eagles defender  who was in Uyo to watch Monday’s  AFCON qualifier between Nigeria and Rwanda , disclosed that he has been following the nation’s domestic league.

”Hon Gbenga has changed a lot of things,” Iroha  said.“ I have been following the league closely and I am impressed with the job he is doing. Just last weekend Kano Pillars returned to their base and the visiting team secured a draw in Kano.

“Pillars also won some weeks back in Enugu. Beyond the improvement in officiating there is improved security at match venues and this is why the referees are bold to officiate fairly. We are going back to the good old days. Don’t forget that as a player, I played for several clubs in Nigeria. I played for Falcons of Aba that is today Enyimba. I played for Heartland before going overseas.

“ Our league is getting back to what it used to be. I want to tell Hon Elegbeleye not to relent. He is doing an excellent job. Hon Elegbeleye is a person that I have known for over two decades and I know he is a serious minded person.

“I want corporate bodies to come and support and identify with the ongoing turn around.”

He added: “You can see that South Africa has a good number of their players plying their trade at home. This is because those playing at home are well paid.

“My appeal is that corporate bodies should support the NPFL so that clubs at home can retain some of their best legs. That way we won’t be relying 100 percent of foreign based players to prosecute our matches.”

Iroha expressed confidence that the Eagles would get back on track when the World Cup 2026 qualifiers resume early next year, even as he congratulated Eguavoen and his players for landing in Morocco for next year’s AFCON.

    • Oriental  derby takes centre stage in Umuahia

There are two heavyweight clashes that headline this weekend’s NPFL Matchday 12 ties and both ties hold in Ikenne (Remo Stars versus Rivers United) and in Umuahia (Abia Warriors versus Enyimba).

Kano Pillars and Heartland  are two traditional clubs and they will rekindle old memories in Kano while there are South West derby (Ikorodu City versus Shooting Stars) in Lagos and North Central derby (Kwara United versus Plateau United) in Ilorin among other thrilling fixtures expected to make your weekend fun filled.

In Ikenne, Finidi George’s Rivers United will strive to avoid a third consecutive league defeat when they face Remo Stars. Finidi was celebrated high heavens when the Pride of Rivers went nine games unbeaten but they have lost their last two games away to Ikorodu City and at home to Bayelsa United.

It is a fixture with the league leaders and the second spot on the table with Rivers United second on the log with 21 points. But they could go four points behind in the title race if they are beaten.

Another important duel  this weekend is the oriental derby that is also called Abian derby between Abia Warriors and Enyimba.

Abia Warriors led by Imama Amapakabo are threading dangerously as they are 12th  on the log with 14 points. They have lost their last two games against Heartland (home) and Lobi Stars (away) and can’t afford to make it three against the People’s Elephant.

Enyimba too who are presently third on the log with 19 points need the maximum points to displace Rivers United in second spot. It is not expected to be easy fixture for Yemi Olanrewaju and his boys.

In Uyo, Akwa United will hope to re-enact last season’s 6-1 drubbing of under-fire Nasarawa United at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. The Promise Keepers are 19th  with nine points while the Solid Miners are only two positions better with 12 points.

El Kanemi Warriors got their unbeaten run snapped cruelly by Shooting Stars in Ibadan in a 3-0 thrashing but they are back to their home to face Niger Tornadoes. The Borno Army are seventh on the log with 16 points but should do better had they not lost points at home.

Tornadoes on their part are fourth with 17 points and will have their position and point’s boosted if they secure an unlikely win.

In Yenagoa, Bayelsa United will hope to consolidate on their away victory over Rivers United when they trade tackles with Katsina United. It is the second game of the ultimatum given to the Prosperity Boys’ head coach, Ladan Bosso and a win will further keep him on the job.

The South West derby will rock Lagos when Ikorodu City host Shooting Stars at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan while Kwara United will slug it out with Plateau United in another North Central derby.

Plateau United have slumped from the top half of the table to the 15th  position after they were docked three points and three goals for the unruly behaviour of their fans in the home draw with Rangers International FC and are in dire need to get a positive result in Ilorin against Kwara United who are eager to steer clear of the relegation zone.

Reigning champions, Rangers International FC will welcome Bendel Insurance who have also slipped to the bottom of the log as a result of the three points and three goals they lost due to the alleged infraction of their fans in the home loss to Kano Pillars.

NPFL sanctions Bendel Insurance, Plateau United  for hooliganism

Displaying  zero tolerance for crowd violence, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL)  has fined Bendel Insurance N3,250,000 and Plateau United N4,500,000 as both teams were  each docked three points from their haul in the ongoing season.

Both teams will also play their next three home games without their fans and supporters  for breaching the NPFL frameworks  and guidelines and  were consequently  punished for the infractions.

This was as a result of crowd restiveness that marred both teams last weekend games against Kano Pillars in Benin and Rangers International FC in Jos.

Bendel Insurance lost 1-0 to Kano Pillars in Benin following a  stoppage time penalty kick awarded to the visitors. Angry  fans allegedly took laws into their hands and descended on the match officials at the end of the game played on Saturday.

In the same vein, fans allegedly loyal to Plateau United were also on parade in Jos shortly after their goalless draw at home to Rangers International FC.

They reportedly  beat the match officials and wounded a player of Rangers’ Daniel Onyia as well.

“Plateau United shall have three points and three goals deducted from their accrued points & goals for assaulting a match official, the NPFL stated.

“Plateau United will pay a fine of N1 million each for failing to provide adequate & effective security as well as for throwing objects towards the field of play, totalling N2 million.

  • Organisers harp on  sustaining achievements of NPFL

Organisers harp on  sustaining achievements of NPFL

The quality of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is on a path of positive transformation and marked by enhanced transparency, professional management and greater public investment. While significant progress has been made in the past two years with the help of NPFL strategic partners, GTI Group, maintaining this momentum still requires maximum dedication to core principles that define a top-flight league.

Without mincing words, transparency is now the cornerstone of the NPFL as Nigerians from all walks of life, including those in the diaspora have all noticed a new ray of hope for the game that was nearly in comatose a few years back. Many thanks to GTI Group, sporting media and the present board of NPFL headed by Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye for working round the clock to ensure a rebirth of our elite league. Through clear-cut decision-making processes and publicly accessible data, the league has fostered a culture of trust. Fans and stakeholders can now monitor teams’ progress, match day outcomes and league decisions, thereby minimizing biases and setting a new bar for accountability in Nigerian sports.

In a game where fair play is everything, NPFL match officials are bound to the highest standards of integrity when it comes to officiating. The league has now introduced stricter guidelines and oversight to ensure that referees and officials uphold the spirit of fair competition. Regular training and ethical oversight are in place to safeguard the league’s reputation, making sure every match is fair and competitive.

However, through the introduction of The Nigeria Football Fund (TNFF) by GTI Group, fans now have a tangible stake in the NPFL. This investment model allows Nigerians and other stakeholders to support the league directly thereby fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility through investment in the Fund. Simply put, TNFF strengthens the bond between the league and its fans, giving the people a say in the future of Nigerian football, while generating financial resources for the sustenance of the elite league.

The pieces of evidence and attestation of a new dawn for NPFL frankly affirm that the managers of the league are seriously committed to a safe environment for match day activities, with zero tolerance for crowd violence. By enforcing immediate sanctions on players, clubs and fans who engage in disruptive behaviour, the league now underscores the importance of respect and security. This firm stance preserves the joy of the game for all and upholds the integrity of the NPFL experience. Therefore, the recent ugly incident at Jos should be properly investigated and appropriate sanctions applied accordingly to forestall future occurrences.

Also, upholding professional standards by NPFL means accountability across all levels! Recently, a popular player that upcoming Nigerian stars look up to throw caution to the winds by making a sweeping statement against a match official and was sanctioned for unprofessional conduct. This simply demonstrates that no one is above the league’s code of conduct. This approach ensures that all parties, from players to fans, respect NPFL values, thereby reinforcing a disciplined and fair environment for the beautiful game to thrive.

As the NPFL continues its journey, the focus remains on transparency, integrity and public ownership. Thus, by working together, fans, officials and players can secure a future for Nigerian football that is built on pride, passion, and professionalism as seen in other glamorous leagues in the world. In every game and every decision, GTI, sporting media and NPFL are building a legacy that Nigerians and her children yet unborn can celebrate and be proud of.

  • Caging NPFL’s monsters

    Caging NPFL’s monsters

I was very impressed when the NPFL disciplinary committee swiftly slammed very stringent measures on Kano Pillars over their captain Ahmed Musa’s post- match comments, scolding the match referee in a game which they lost. My joy stemmed from the fact that NPFL chieftains their  maintained their stands to show that there isn’t any room for sacred cows in the domestic league. Not anymore.

“I’ve been praising the officiating and the progress in the league up until now, but the performance of the officials in this match Day- 9 game made me wonder if coming back to play in the NPFL was the right choice,” the Nigeria international said.

“For the league to improve, we need to address the quality of officiating. Officials must not be allowed to diminish the players’ morale and effort. If I keep witnessing such officiating, I cannot encourage anyone to return to the NPFL, It would be a waste of our efforts if this continues,” Musa said further.

What got me thinking was that the information which resulted in NPFL’s sanctions came from a press release by the club’s media department. They have learned a lesson on how to distil messages sent out to the media for public consumption, going forward. What hit the Pyramid side as an own goal. It also sent a message to big stars in the league not to disparage the game by pouring odium on it.

The NPFL Disciplinary Board fined Kano Pillars N2 million – N1 million for misconduct capable of bringing the game to disrepute and another N1 million for improper conduct of their players and officials. Pillars’ Ugochukwu Gabriel exhibited unruly behaviour during the match. Gabriel, who was sent off against Nasarawa United, was given a nine-game suspension, which began from match day 10. The club, however, reserves the right to appeal the sanctions within 48 hours from the date of notice. This again is another kettle of fish when the chips are down in the closing weeks of the domestic league. We wait.

It is good to note that erring players, officials and coaches are being punished for uncouth comments with their clubs made to pay heavy fines. We haven’t reached the critical stages where every game brings to the fore teams as title contenders and those enmeshed in the murky relegation waters. This stage, sadly, starts in the second round with the fans taking the laws into their hands to cause mayhem. I’m looking forward to seeing how the NPFL body would punish irate fans, the clubs and such clubs’ chairmen who most times look the other way when the thugs who are their fans wreak havoc on match referees and spectators who are focused to flee the stadium.

The disciplinary markers laid in wait for defaulting players, coaches and team officials, underline the seriousness the organisers have attached to discipline. But, it is pertinent to remind the organisers that club officials would soon use their home fans to forcibly get things done their way. It raises the poser of the relationship between NPFL chieftains and the Nigeria Police.

Adequate policing of the premises where games are being played gives the match referees the confidence to do their jobs judiciously, knowing that their lives and indeed all those inside the stadium are safe. One only hopes that the organisers have time tested security architecture to arrest monsters who most times do the biddings of the home teams, especially when the results on the field of play end in defeats.

Mayhem at match venues before, during and after games are mostly engineered by the home fans. No winning away side can sustain any crisis on the field of play knowing that the results are in their favour. There are also instances where some illiterate player, coaches and officials incite the home fans to take the laws into their hands when they deliberately refuse to continue the games on flimsy grounds which are the sole prerogative of the centre referee and his two assistants, not forgetting the match commissioners.

The physical presence of 50 policemen armed with batons and canisters of teargas is grossly inadequate to checkmate irate fans in a capacity filled stadium with a sitting arrangement of 20,000 people. The NPFL officials need to sit with the different State Commissioners of Police to fashion means of policing the premises by ensuring that known troublemakers of home teams are appealed to conduct themselves peacefully. Otherwise, they would be made to face the full wrath of the law, no matter their stature in society.

Those who disturb public peace at match venues are no spirits but people known to everyone in such locations. So, how is it possible for match officials to be maimed and no arrests and prosecutions are made on urchins who caused such bodily harm without wearing masks to hide their identities? Indeed, when such a thing happens, such a club’s chairmen and the chairman of the State’s FA should be told to produce the culprits within specific days otherwise, they would be held culpable.

It would amount to a failure of leadership, if in the coming weeks; we started reading about the atrocities of criminals masquerading as soccer fans in stadiums. No Nigerian blood should be shed on the altar of watching soccer matches live simply because some people aren’t satisfied with decisions taken during matches.

The Nigeria police are our friend but the NPFL chieftains should help them to do their job very well by insisting that all the domestic league clubs at the elite class must play their games with excellent and functional CCTV cameras to capture questionable scenes during games, especially during mayhem.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have vans inside the stadium where anyone caught constituting themselves into nuisance are hauled into the waiting Black Maria vans and driven away to the police station for further investigation. The era where some charlatans move majestically from their seats towards the playing pitches brandishing cudgels and all manner of dangerous weapons to unleash bodily harm on vulnerable match officials is over.  It is about time the Nigeria referees’ body take their destinies in their hands by prosecuting club chairmen who fail to arrest thugs who inflict needless bodily harm on match officials.

The referees’ parent body must insist on prosecuting beasts in human clothing at the law courts. Miscreants won’t cease to take the laws into their hands until they know those who are languishing in jail across the country. Need I state the immense pains the battered referees go through in hospital for committing no offence? Only the NFF through its organs can punish erring referees not illiterate fans or ill prepared clubs.

I don’t like to disparage the domestic league because sports, albeit football, is one of the few platforms where Nigeria can be ranked with world-beaters.

NPFL: Rivers United, El Kane mistake unbeaten run in Port Harcourt

The battle between two unbeaten teams in the Nigerian top flight, Rivers United and El Kanemi Warriors, dominates Matchday Nine fixtures of the Nigeria Premier Football League,  writes TUNDE LIADI…

Rivers United and El Kanemi Warriors are among the teams making waves in the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League(NPFL) season with their impressive performances.
