Sultan: let’s live in peace as one

The Sultan of Sokoto and President -General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairsý(NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has appealed to Nigerians to live in peace with one another for the unity of the country.

“I am calling on all Nigerians to imbibe and embrace the culture and spirit of living in peace, irrespective of tribal, ethnic or regional differences.”

Alhaji Abubakar made the plea  in a statement in Sokoto yesterday.

He said Nigeria would continue to remain one nation with a common goal of purposeful development.

Alhaji Abubakar said the action of some should not be allowed to tear the country apart, adding that bad ones should be called to order by their elders and community leaders.

He challenged elder statesmen to call the youth to order and educate them on the need for  peaceful coexistence in their respective geo-political zones.

He said traditional leaders would continue to preach love among the diverse communities in their domains throughout the country.

The Sultan said Nigeria was brought together by an act of God, despite the different ethnic group, religions and diverse rich and beautiful cultures to form one country. He said God would protect the sovereignty.

He urged Nigerians to live in peace and respect one another and go about their normal businesses

The Sultan promised the federal and state governments as well as security agencies in their collective efforts to bring sustained peace and development to the country.

    Preamble

Habits die hard. They come with human nature and grow with human nature. They are the symbolic traits with which human personalities are identified and labeled in any society. Great people are known, not by the mighty castles in which they live or the sizes of cars they ride on roads or even the power of oratory they possess. What rather makes some people great in the sight of their fellow human beings is the conduct by which they relate with others as well as the footprint they leave on the sands of time at the point of their departure. The true greatness of any human being is permanently encapsulated in the pearl of humility rather than in the cave of vanity. The one is indelible. The other is ephemeral.

    Habits of great People

Philosophers believe that humble people are invariably characterised by certain distinct habits which are manifest in them. Some of such habits can be summarised as follows:

    • They are consciously aware of the situations around them.
    • They retain their relationships with others without minding the differences in their habits. •They make difficult decisions with ease and stand by them.
    • They put others first in their consideration. 5. They listen patiently but with rap attention when others are talking.
    • They exemplify endurance with maturity.
    • They talk only when necessary and give room for others to express their views.
    • They are far from domineering despite the giving hands with which they are endowed.
    • Above all, they radiate the fear of Allah in their judgments on issues and in their lifestyles.

Which of the above listed habits is not manifest in the newly elected Deputy President-General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, His Excellency, Alhaji (Dr) Sakariyau Olayiwola Babalola OON?

For those who know him closely, none of those habits can be faulted. His election to the second highest position in the apex Islamic body in Nigeria is a confirmation of the pure intention with which the Muslim Ummah of the South-west Nigeria (MUSWEN) was established a few years ago. Nothing can better depict Allah’s guidance in the choice of leadership in MUSWEN than the replacement of humility personified (Aare Arisekola) with humility personified (Dr. S. O. Babalola).

    Clarification

By the way, it is necessary to clarify here once again that the election of the late Aare Abdul Azeez Arisekola-Alao as NSCIA Deputy President-General was not because he was Aare Musulumi of Yoruba Land. It was rather due to his unsurpassed role in the NSCIA for years as recognised by the apex Islamic body and his well known humility. The title of Aare Musulumi of Yoruba Land is regional and peculiar to the League of Imams and Alfas in the South-west Region which initiated it and appoints the conferee. On the other hand, the post of Deputy President-General is national and appoint-able only by the NSCIA without any recourse to the League of Imams and Alfas of South-west. In a nutshell, the one has no direct bearing with the other.

    Happiness and Solidarity

To show happiness and solidarity with Dr Babalola as the new NSCIA Deputy President-General, many Muslims, men and women bombarded the ‘Message Column’ with a deluge of congratulatory messages and felicitations some of which could only be accommodated here today. Others will be published later. They are as follows:

  • Religion, key to nation building – Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Saturday said religion is very important in building a peaceful and virile nation.

Oshiomhole said this while declaring open the Annual Delegates Conference of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), in Benin City, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

He said religious gatherings were important in building a peaceful and just society, whose citizens and leaders would be guided by the fear of God.

The governor said this would ensure that policy choices were guided by how they impact on the people.

Oshiomhole added that people should be judged by their actions and not their religious persuasion.

He called on the media to always draw a distinction between religion and criminality.

  • NSCIA scribe, friend relive last moments with Islamic scholar el-Miskin

NSCIA scribe, friend relive last moments with Islamic scholar el-Miskin

Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Secretary-General Prof Ishaq Oloyede yesterday described the death of his deputy, Prof Tijani Abubakar El-Miskin in Thursday’s stampede in Saudi Arabia, as painful and a great loss for the country.

Prof Oloyede said he spoke with the late El-Miskin two weeks ago when he was asked to represent NSCIA at an international conference. He said: “He was at the international conference two weeks ago representing the supreme council and had a good outing. He was such a nice man.”

The Kaduna State government, Waziri of  Gujba Emirate and long-time friend of Prof Tijani Abubakar El-Miskin, Ali Gaji, as well as friends and former colleagues also mourned the death of the first female editor of New Nigerian Newspaper, Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, and Professor Tijjani El-Miskin who was the Deputy Secretary-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA.

Gaji relieved his last moment with the distinguished academician. “I picked my phone to call him but I look at the time and changed my mind, then the news of his death came to me, it was a shock,” he said.

“We really missed an intellectual of very high standard and he was not only vast in his field, but one can say that he had virtually an encyclopedic knowledge of world events and current affairs. Whenever you want to know some developments, particularly of African event, nationally, or internationally, you need to meet Prof. Tijani for in-depth and highly intellectual analysis that you can hardly get from any other person. This is one specialty that he had.

“He was very eloquent in about four to five languages like French, English, Arabic and Spanish, Hausa, not to talk of his own native Kanuri language. When the king of Spain visited Borno in the mid-80s, he was conversing fluently and translating the speech of the King of Spain to the Shehu of Borno. Tijani was officially co-opted to do that job and he did it very well.”

Their friendship dates back to the 70s when both were graduate assistants at the University of Maiduguri with strong unionism ties.

“Our friendship started from University of Maiduguri and what actually brought us together were union activities because we were both very active in unionism. That is how we came together. When NTA Maiduguri launched in preparation for FESTAC then, we (would) normally go to NTA Maiduguri then he presented programs and commentary on current affairs and world events, and our friendship continued to develop because of his interest in intellectual pursuit as both of us were in academics. Since then, we became very close doing things together like marriage events. He helped me in some of the events and the same way I do for him, and in some other social activities, both in his family and my family. It has been like that up to the time he died. Even before he left for this hajj, he was here in my house and he told me he was involved in the Amirul Hajj team of Borno.

“Yesterday in the evening before I went for prayers, I had it in my mind to call him. I even took my phone, but I said ‘oh, this is the time they are likely to be stoning Satan’, so I decided I would call him after magariba hoping that they must have finished by that time and returned to base.

Just all of a sudden I was sitting in my parlour and around 11:00 m, I got a call from Mecca that my friend was dead. Ah! I was shocked and I couldn’t even tell any of my family members. The calls kept coming in and one even called me from Sudan, and all over the country people were calling me.

“His death is a great loss not just to our society but to the entire humankind because even this year alone, he was invited to Turkey, Morocco, USA and Senegal to present papers on one topic or the other. So that shows you how he was an internationally-accepted scholar. Anywhere that Prof Tijani spoke on any topic, the people would continue to follow up to get more from him.

“In the North East and particularly northern Nigeria, he was regarded as one star that was always hunted to tap from his wealth of knowledge. He presented issues and the needs of his people and anytime he did that it was always in-depth. He had a vast knowledge of the Borno Empire, vast knowledge of the Sokoto Caliphate and the good knowledge of Islam, maybe because of his comparative Literature background.”

Prof Oloyede lamented the death of Hajia Balikisu Yusuf and Hafsat Shittu, saying their loss was too much for the country to bear.

The NSCIA scribe confirmed that more casualties were recorded from the Nigerian camp. “We know that the figure of Nigerian casualties is more than the three people mentioned so far; we are trying to reach out to their families to break the news to them.”

Asked to mention some of them, Oloyede said it would not be proper for the affected families to read the news on the pages of newspapers. “Once we informed the affected families, be rest assured that the appropriate authority will notify the media.”

He pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) on information about their people, saying that NAHCON needs to be properly briefed by various states pilgrims’ board and carry out its own investigations before releasing information about the Nigerian casualties.

He enjoined the Saudi Arabia authorities to ensure that thorough investigation is carried out to forestall future occurrence. The world needed to know whether negligence on the part of the Saudi Arabia authoritities or failure by the pilgrims to yield to instructions was responsible.

“If the fault is from the Saudi Arabia authority, then the world needs to let their government know that they must be up and doing in organising the pilgrimage.

“The quality of lives lost in the stampede is worrisome. No country would be happy sending her illustrious citizens for pilgrimage where their security can’t be guaranteed,” he said.

He warned pilgrims to always adhere to instructions in the holy land. “I learnt the pilgrims faced one another at the Jamrah site which shouldn’t be so. If they had followed the Saudi Government instructions, maybe we wouldn’t have this disaster.”

With shock and grief, prominent Nigerians yesterday trooped to the house of Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf to sympathise with the family over her demise in Jamrat, Mecca during the stampede that claimed over 700 lives.

Among them were the new Comptroller General of Customs, Colonel Ibrahim Hammeed Ali, former Military Administrator of Kano state, Colonel Aminu Kontagora Rtd., Alhaji Ismaila Isa Funtua, former Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Adamu Bello, former NBTE Executive Secretary, Eng. Nurudeen Yakubu, former Governorship candidate in Borno State, Alhaji Maina Waziri, Malam Mohammed Haruna, Alhaji Mohammed Dewu and Sheilk Hassan Idris of the Yahaya Road Central Mosque, Kaduna.

While taking one prayer session after the other for the repose of the souls of victims of the stampede at the family’s house at No. 6B, Kabiru Street, Malali GRA, they expressed shock at the death of Hajiya Yusuf whom they described as selfless, brilliant and exceptionally religious.

Sighted among sympathisers holding prayers, Hajiya Bilkisu’s husband, Alhaji Mustapha Bintike directed The Nation’s correspondent to his son, Moshood who described his mother as someone who could give all she had to another person.

Speaking with The Nation on behalf of the family, Hajiya Bilkisu’s son, Moshood Yusuf described his mother as humane, very religious, a disciplinarian, an activist, a role model and a committed mother.

“We were shocked by the news,” he said. “We will miss her because she is everything to us. But we are consoled by the fact that she died performing religious obligation, she died a blessed death.”

His late mother associated with many humanitarian organisations and NGOs, especially those involved in advocacy for peace, unity, development and progress of the society, he added. Apart from being a strong member of the Muslim Women Association of Nigeria, (FORMAN) and Interfaith Religious Group, his mother devoted her live to the cause of the downtrodden, especially among women and children.

Through his media aide, Samuel Aruwa, Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasril el-Rufai described the death of Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf as shocking. He said she was very close to the state government and had forged a close working relationship with the governor.

She said: “Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf was a well respected activist, a hardworking woman who devoted her life to the ordinary people. She had been involved in activities that helped to solve problems of society apart from being a journalist of repute. The governor of Kaduna State holds her in high esteem. She said we should never go combative in our approach to governance especially from the media perspective.

“She insisted that our politics should be issue-based and she was very close to the governor. Her death at this point was shocking to us. In fact, she had been involved in religious advocacy for the consolidation of peace in Kaduna State. She worked in the Interfaith Group with the wife of Bishop Idowu Faron.”

Special Adviser to former governor of Kaduna State on Media, Malam Muktar Sirajo, described Hajiya Bilkisu as extremely brilliant, forthright and exceptionally nice, apart from being a professional journalist.

  • NSCIA slams Ekiti governor on Buhari’s appointments

NSCIA slams Ekiti governor on Buhari’s appointments

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Ekiti State chapter, has slammed Governor Ayodele Fayose for criticising President Muhammadu Buhari’s  political appointments.

The governor, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Lere Olayinka, said of 31 persons appointed by President Buhari since May 29, only seven were from the South.

Fayose described the appointments as lopsided and “tinted in ethnic and tribal colouration”, stressing that “if such step is not checked, it will threaten the unity of Nigeria”.

NSCIA, in a statement by the Chairman, Sanni Yakubu Olaide, berated Fayose for his criticism, saying: “Fair as this observation may appear, we feel it may interest the public to know what this governor that is now calling the kettle black is doing in his own state”.

They accused Fayose of lopsidedness in appointments, saying he had appointed only four Muslims so far, representing 0.05 per cent of the 80 political and career appointments, “representing 80 per cent of the total appointment he intends to make, compared to that of Buhari, who has appointed less than 20 per cent of his political appointees, of which 22.5 per cent are southerners.”

While conceding to the governor, his right to criticise President Buhari on equitable distribution of political offices, the NSCIA urged him to correct what it called lopsided appointments, to give the people freedom of  expression he enjoyed under the President.

The organisation lamented that while Fayose did not consider it fair to appoint Muslims into political offices, he appointed his son as his personal assistant, bringing to five the number of people appointed from his home town, Afao-Ekiti, “when most big towns are yearning for one appointment.”

NSCIA recalled that Muslims, at different times and under different democratic governments, were elected and appointed as deputy governors, secretaries to the state government, chairmen and members of statutory boards and commissions, special advisers, permanent secretaries, chairmen and members of parastatals, among others.

It said it wondered why the governor thought what the Muslims deserved in his government “is one special adviser, one of the 16 council caretaker committee chairmen and one member of the House of Assembly”.

  • NSCIA urges Nigerians to shun materialism, corruption

NSCIA urges Nigerians to shun materialism, corruption

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has enjoined Nigerians to shun materialism and corruption.

A statement by its Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged Nigerians to be inspired by the spirit of self-discipline

Oloyede said: “They should live modest lives of honour and integrity, drawing appropriate lessons from some of our leaders. They need to demonstrate competence and sense of mission. The campaign period of sloganeering has expired and only exemplary performance can retain and sustain the massive goodwill and support of the abused masses.

“We enjoin Muslims to make good use of Ramadan through increased productivity. This productivity will be achieved through watching less Television, avoiding over-eating, keeping offline except as demanded by duty and virtuous acts and reading much of the Qur’an, observing nawaafil and remembering Allah all the time.”

The statement further reads: “Incidentally, the holy month this year coincides with a period Muslims and indeed  Nigerians, have every reason to thank Allah for His abundant blessings. The peaceful elections and the dramatic transition of power from one government to the other are a testimony to the fact that Allah answers prayers.

“All right-thinking Nigerians appreciate that what Nigeria witnessed this year, despite the frightening predictions and scary projections before the 2015 elections, was simply the grace of divine intervention.

“The month of Ramadan as a period of forgiveness offers Nigerians an opportunity to forgive the unprecedented abuse unleashed on their collective humanity in the recent past and to forge ahead as one nation united by one destiny. It is an ample opportunity to foster the ideals of brotherhood and togetherness after some years of crude and institutionalised divide-and-rule tactics which resulted in unprecedented divisiveness, losses, of lives, property and reputation.

“The council maintained that Ramadan offers a great moment for rejuvenation and renewal, of faith, of friendship, of relationships, of cooperation and of national unity regardless of religious, ethnic and political affiliations, urging Muslims to take advantage of the moment in advancing the cause of God and our common humanity.

“It was Shaykh Uthman dan Fodiyo who said he could live with Kufr (unbeliever) but not with injustice. Though the Ummah might have suffered injustice of unimaginable proportions, the period of Ramadan is meant to re-commit ourselves to the Almighty Allah by showcasing the beauty of Islam to all through justice, forgiveness, kindness and love.

“Meanwhile, for those who Allah Has entrusted with leadership, we urge them to remember the favours of Allah on them when He answered the prayers of the oppressed, the maligned and the persecuted by granting them success. They should complement the prayers by being good and justify the expectations of Nigerians by being fair and just to all.”

  • NSCIA felicitates with Christians

The Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has congratulated Christians on the Easter celebration.

Briefing reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, the council’s Secretary General, Prof. Is-Haq Oloyede, described Easter as a religious festival commemorating a significant landmark in Christianity.

He said Easter serves as a springboard for spiritual renewal, religious reawakening and rebirth.

The Sultan hoped that “this spirit of reawakening and rebirth would be allowed to define our national course.

“As a people of faith united by our common ancestor, Prophet Ibrahim, the recent history of distrust within our faith communities and weakened efforts at inter-faith communication require urgent attention of all of us.

“Easter serves to re-direct our attention to those values and ideals that we traditionally share in common, which had defined us before the recent expediency.

“Human beings are weak and we are characterised by fallibility. We must have committed errors as leaders, but God, in His infinite wisdom, has granted us the opportunity of this season to rethink. It is an ample moment we should seize to deeply reflect on where we erred as humans and then chart a new beginning of rectitude and righteousness as one people under God”.

Oloyede lamented that both Christian and Islamic studies as independent school subjects have been downgraded to mere topics under a subject in our basic school curricula.

He added: “Other tragedies bordering on trust had befallen us, but we thank God for this golden opportunity of Easter and its symbolic message of renewal.

“As we congratulate you and our Christian brothers and sisters on the occasion of this important religious festival, we urge you to partner with us in addressing issues pertinent to building a strong and vibrant nation.

“Let us put the past behind us as we deem the largely peaceful elections (about which the world was apprehensive). This period is an opportunity to make a new beginning in the spirit of fasting, prayer, penance and cooperation.

“The Nigerian Muslim Ummah wishes you many happy returns of the holy season. We also wish you and ourselves a renewed commitment to holiness and righteousness in our words and actions to the glory of God, the advancement of humanity and the guidance of our followers.”

•Those behind Boko Haram will soon be known—Oloyede
    •Blasts FG, says ‘it’s clueless’

The Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Prof. Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede he said Nigeria is in trouble and pleaded, with citizens to ensure that competent people rule them.

He said in an interview on Radio Kwara that it was clear that the federal government merely used the recent National Conference to divert the nation’s attention from the forthcoming elections.

He also said there is every reason to believe that there is a conspiracy theory behind Boko Haram.

He said some traditional rulers in the north have discovered helicopters dropping arms and ammunition for Boko Haram insurgents.

Nigerians, according to him, will soon realise that some of those berating Boko Haram are behind the sect.

He said the abstention of Nigeria from voting on the fate of Palestine has justified the assumption in some quarters that the Federal Government is clueless.

Oloyede, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, said: “Right from the word go, I think we knew the National Conference was a joke and we said so. We knew we were going for a jamboree.

“In a letter we wrote to Mr. President, we said this thing (National Conference) is too close to election, you will not have the opportunity, the chance and the time to implement any decision before the election.

“We said:  why don’t you face the election? The time wasted was to divide attention from preparation for the election. And now we are talking about election in February and nothing is on ground when you have wasted four months and resources you could have expended on that.

“And recently Mr. President said it was a Yoruba-inspired conference. It is so clear that the Presidency of Nigeria is so weak that a group can manipulate it and at the end of the day, the President said I have conflicting advice coming from different people. That is why you were elected to iron out conflicting advice.

“I think the issue is that we are in trouble. May God save this nation.”

On Boko Haram insurgency, Oloyede said: “I see so many hands in it. If you like, call it conspiracy theory. If the government had taken the matter serious, it would have addressed it.

“I have spoken to so many traditional rulers in the North who can tell you that they had with their naked eyes seen helicopters dropping food and ammunition for these Boko Haram insurgents. And they are people you cannot doubt. And what they will tell you is that why didn’t you take their photographs?

“We will soon know that those who are shouting against Boko Haram are the perpetrators. We have spoken, we have lamented, let all Nigerians continue to pray to expose those behind Boko Haram.”

On the nation’s abstention from voting on Palestine at the UN Security Council, the NSCIA scribe said it was a sad development.

He added: “I feel very sad and I believe all those who have conscience all over the world should condemn the Federal Government for this stupid decision.

“The implication is that Nigeria has identified with the oppressors, Nigeria has said that what is going on is okay, Nigeria has endorsed the killing of innocent souls in Palestine. Nigeria has said there is nothing bad, it has said might is right. That is the position. I do not know what Nigeria can do to reverse that situation because the dent is already there.

“That is why it is important for people to have competent people ruling them. A person that is not competent can do a permanent damage to a nation. And that is exactly what has happened.

“To me, I just believe that if there is anybody who is in doubt about the fact that this government has lost all sense of decency, this event had proven that. This even had proven that you are clueless, you don’t even have simple principle of international diplomacy, you cannot be counted.

“Of course, America will not because of that take you serious, Britain knows why you are doing that is because you want to do many things under the carpet. Israel also knows that you are just follow-follow. They would just make a mockery of us as a nation because if we are really sensible, we would not have taken that position.”

  • NSCIA calls for preventive measures

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has urged Nigerians to obey preventive measures to contain the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

A statement by its Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged Muslims to avoid eating prohibited animals, such as monkeys, dogs and pigs.

It said: “Bats and all fanged animals, which have now been identified as vectors of the Ebola virus, are forbidden. Other types of food forbidden, which one should be wary of as a means of guarding against undesirable consequences, are given in the Qu’ran thus: ‘Forbidden to you (as food) are dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which the name of other than Allah has been invoked, that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless you are able to slaughter (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); forbidden also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety.”

NSCIA hailed the prompt efforts of the Federal and Lagos State governments at curtailing the deadly disease.

The umbrella Islamic body said the Ebola outbreak was a wake-up call to Muslims to adhere to Islamic etiquette and ethics, which many people had ignored out of ignorance or sheer heedlessness.

Beyond the exposure of the Ebola challenges, the NSCIA said, Islam as a way of life, provides appropriate mechanisms that guarantee safety from and prevention of infectious diseases at all times.

NSCIA warns against misuse of soldiers, aviation facilities

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) yesterday warned the Federal Government against misuse of military and aviation facilities.

It faulted the reopening of Maiduguri Airport for a prominent politician to the detriment of Muslim pilgrims who wanted to use the facility for Umrah (lesser Hajj).

To the council, it is dangerous to deploy security establishments to persecute Nigerians.

It asked the military authorities to protect the credibility of their profession by not being partisan.

The NSCIA made its position known in a statement signed by its Acting Director of Publicity, Muhammad K. Qasim.

The statement said: “The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) is shocked to the marrow by media reports that the Maiduguri International Airport was made available for the use of a prominent politician yesterday.

“This is against the backdrop of the fact that it was the same airport that was suddenly shut against Muslims recently. Despite the earlier clearance to use the airport, the Muslim pilgrims were denied flight at the eleventh hour.

“Apart from denying the pilgrims the use of the facility, the Muslims were subjected to physical and psychological trauma as a result of their grilling by the Nigerian security apparatus. The pilgrims were subsequently forced to embark on a tortuous and agonising travel by road to Kano at odd hours.

“That a public facility denied Muslims on pilgrimage was granted to a top politician is a proof of bad faith. It is unfortunate as it is a confirmation of the impression in some quarters that our insecurity is politicised.”

The council cautioned the government against the deployment of military to persecute Nigeria.

The statement added: “NSCIA warns the Federal Government that it is dangerous to use the security establishment to persecute Nigerians.

“A situation in which religious profiling is camouflaged as part of security measures does not bode well for the country. This is a dangerous path because it has the capacity to undermine and demystify the military.

“We urge the Federal Government to exercise caution in the discriminatory use of military and aviation facilities in order to protect the political neutrality of national establishment.

“It is our belief that the Federal Government has enough powers, constitutionally guaranteed, to tackle its perceived enemies rather than deny tax-paying Nigerians the use of public facilities under the guise of fighting insecurity.

“We also call on the military authorities to protect and safeguard the credibility of the profession by not being partisan. The military establishment remains the bulwark of the country as the epitome of sacrifice and agent of national unity.”

“Under no condition should they trade their professionalism for political expediency, the type of which Nigerians have worryingly begun to observe with open-mouthed amazement.”
