Reel Life: Reliving Maduka’s NTA years

Eighty-eight-year-old veteran broadcaster Vincent Maduka may have long retired from active service but he is certainly not tired. The newsman, who has since become an author, showed he still had it in him when he took guests on a journey into his Reel Life – his years in public service television, EVELYN OSAGIE reports

It was an exciting journey into the life and times of octogenarian engineer-turn-broadcaster Vincent I. Maduka when an elite reading group, under the auspices of Renegade Book Club, held a reading in celebration of his book, Reel Life.

Born in the Epetedo area of Lagos on October 5, 1935, Maduka is the pioneer director-general of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and holds the Nigerian national honour of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, OFR (2003). He retired voluntarily at the age of 50 to set up a management and engineering consultancy under the name Macrocon Systems Limited. A major project handled by Macrocon Systems was the deregulation of Nigerian Telecommunications and the establishment of the regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, in 1992.

The event, which was organised in collaboration with SOS Publishing, was held at RapJointLagos. He was there with his wife, Olubunmi Maduka, who is the first woman engineer in Nigeria.

He fielded questions from young members of club, led by one of its founders, Wale Irokosu, a lawyer.

“Engr. Maduka is someone this country should be celebrating. He is a very brave man who stood against the powers that be. He is the brain behind the founding structure of Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC). Besides NTA, he has served Nigeria in different capacities: he has held corporate and similar directorships, including the chairmanship of the Bendel Broadcasting Service and NITEL PLC., etc. And he has touched so many lives, including mine. The book is a very important historical material. He has so much to teach us about Nigeria, Lagos and patriotism. We are proud to have the opportunity to drink from his wealth of experience.”

Before putting the book together, the author had written and presented numerous papers on broadcasting, telecommunications, management, and leadership, under such platforms as public services, business management and development support communication, and de-regulation, among others. However, the book, he said, was inspired by a Spanish friend, who had written many books, documenting various areas of his life.

And even the book, which was launched a year ago, documents Maduka’s years managing public service television. It became clear to the audience as he relived some interesting moments in his career that are also splendid materials for students of Mass Communication as well as history.

From his early childhood, his love for Lagos, politics and the development of public service television in Nigeria and more, Maduka’s took guests into his world, showing himself as an astute storyteller. The veteran broadcaster believes in unity in diversity of Nigeria; and in fact it was said at the event, that during his time at NTA, he brought his Nigeria concept to play through NTA programmes.

As he relived different times of his career, he called attention to the role of the media in nation-building, while citing the Masquerade as an example of programmes that promoted unity. Touching on the challenges of being at the helms of affairs at the government-owned national television, he summed up the role of the media as thus: “to promote nation issues, even as you observe certain sensibilities and core values respected and shared by all”. He urged the mainstream media “dissociate politics from TV media”. For the veteran broadcaster, his most interesting day at NTA “was the day Fela came to TV House at Ibadan.”

Maduka is a facilitator at the School of Media and Communication (SMC), Pan-Atlantic University. He teaches Creativity and Innovation as a course to the Masters’ students.

  • NTA, HotSports ready to bring matches to Nigerian fans

HotSports Media Group, Nigeria’s foremost marketing and Production Company, has formalised its relationship with Africa’s largest television network, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Network, as the Official Exclusive Marketers of the 32nd African Cup of Nations which kicks off in Cairo on June 21. NTA will broadcast the matches on terrestrial television channels across Nigeria, while the Super Eagles will be among 24 teams contesting to lift the trophy on July 19 in the showpiece game.

Other tournaments in the bouquet of the NTA/HotSports marketing partnership include the U23 Africa Cup of Nations (the 2020 Olympics soccer qualifiers that will be hosted by Egypt in November, this year), Africa Women Cup of Nations (Congo Brazzaville 2020), U20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 in Mauritania, the U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco also in 2021 and CAF Super Cup 2020.

At the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding MoU between NTA and HotSports in Abuja during the week, NTA Director General, Yakubu Ibn Mohammed assured that his organisation would deploy its immense experience in the coverage and broadcast of international sports competitions to AFCON 2019 and the other tournaments in view and it is determined to deliver exciting moments for Nigerian sports fans through the partnership with HotSports.

“NTA had always been known to be the front runner when it comes to the coverage of international sporting activities. NTA has covered various World Cups and has been involved in the coverage of the Olympic Games, African Cup of Nations, and age-grade competitions.

This management of NTA is determined to bring back the good old days because NTA pioneered sports casting in this country and we should always be in the lead,” he stated. Ibn Mohammed dwelled on the significance of AFCON 2019 and why corporate organisations would derive huge marketing benefits from sponsorship: “As far as the 32nd African Cup of Nation is concerned, it is significant for Nigeria because this is the first time the competition is would feature 24 teams instead of the normal 16. Nigeria is participating for the first time in four years, so NTA feels it has a responsibility to beam the matches to the homes of Nigerians and viewing centres across the country.

There will be 52 matches because of the extended number of teams, each of which will deliver the desired eyeballs for sponsors.

  • FEC approves N1.3bn contracts to reposition NAN, NTA, FRCN

The Federal Government on Wednesday approved N1.3 billion contracts to strengthen and reposition its media outfits for effective information dissemination.

The media organisations to benefit from the projects include the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigeria Television Authority and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

The minister also explained that the upgrade of equipment at the NTA took place more than a decade ago.

“I also presented three memos today on behalf of three parastatals in my ministry, the NTA, the News Agency of Nigeria and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

“The memo by the NTA was for an approval for the award of contract for the procurement of cameras, microphones and television pack for a total sum of N283, 813,990.75.

“It is significant to note that in the last 20 years, only twice that attempts have been made to upgrade the equipment of the NTA.

“The first attempt was in 1999 during the FIFA Under-20 World Cup and the last was in 2009 when Nigeria hosted the FIFA Under-17 World Cup

“So also the News Agency of Nigeria also presented their memo. But, here largely they wanted vehicles to them move to gather and disseminate news.

“So, the contract for the procurement of 15 vehicles from Peugeot Nigeria ltd was awarded to them for N148, 740,900,’’ he said. (NAN)

  • ‘Body bag’: PDP calls for El-Rufai’s arrest

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), Prince Uche Secondus, has called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to arrest the Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.

The call was made in response to the governor’s threat to foreign election observers and members of the international community that they would be sent back to their countries in body bags if they get involved in the upcoming general elections.

The governor had, during a live programme on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Tuesday, threatened that foreign election observers planning to interfere with the polls will leave in Nigeria in body bags.

But speaking at the party’s presidential campaign ally in Makurdi, the Benue State capital on Friday, the PDP chairman, said that an Atiku Abubakar presidency would put an end to mindless killings in Benue and other states.

Secondus said, “Yesterday, we went to Katsina, they were killing in eight local governments. That is the President’s home state. The killing is so much in Nigeria.  Poverty and hunger is too much in the land. We will shift the headquarters of poverty to another country. Atiku Abubakar will create jobs for our teeming youths. He has done it before, he will do it again”.

“We were told that Senator George Akume was inviting military. This is not a military regime, this is democracy. Anyone that sends soldiers to Akume is against democracy. And we will reject such rigged results either in Benue or at the national level. We will never accept any rigged results.

“You are aware that the Governor of Kaduna State has said that people will be killed and carried in body bags. And we must stand because they cannot kill us. The international community is aware.

“We call on the Federal Government, headed by President Muhammadu Buhari to set up an inquiry. If he refuses, then the International Criminal Court should arrest El-Rufai immediately for saying that the international community and PDP will be carried in body bags. They are not ready for election. They know that Atiku is winning”.

The PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, assured the people that he would end the security challenges in the state.

  • I’VE BEEN SEXUALLY HARASSED LIKE ANY OTHER CELEBRITY, BUT…

I’VE BEEN SEXUALLY HARASSED LIKE ANY OTHER CELEBRITY, BUT…

Ibadan-born actor, producer and director, Saidi Balogun, who was recently made Health Ambassador by the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, spoke to OLAITAN GANIU on his almost three decades career, plans for the new year and other issues.

It’s a New Year, what are your plans for the year?

My plan for the New Year is simple, it’s to move on, do my work the way it should be done. I have been made the ambassador of health and my association, The Golden Movie Ambassador of Nigeria (TGMAN) takes it to the next level, actualize her real vision. And, my job going to locations regularly and producing movies for people to see, bring out the creativity in me and show to the whole world to see and champion some campaign on the things that are going wrong. May God be with us.

We see less of Yoruba movies showing in cinemas. As a veteran in the Yoruba movie sector, what is responsible for this?

Let’s get one thing clear, movie has no language. Movie is a moving picture. So, if you call me Yoruba actor, I just answer not to make you think I’m arrogant. I am a moviemaker, I am an entertainer. Secondly, as for Yoruba films not going to cinemas, we are coming there gradually; if we can start by doing it for six states, I mean the Yoruba-speaking states, and then have the movies subtitled for non-Yoruba speaking audience… Possibly the Yoruba moviemaker have not looked much into that area and I am sure, it is not only Yoruba movies that are not in cinemas. I was really shocked when I got to Kogi State and saw a lot of Igala and Ibira films.

Could you recall the first major movie you featured in?

The first time I faced the camera – I think that was in 1978 at NTA. It was a television programme. The first movie I featured in was in Kwara State then. That was a long time ago, I can’t remember the year, it was a cellulous film that never saw the light of the day. I think it was in 1984. That’s what I can recall for now.

As a popular actor, do you have plans to venture into politics?

I would say, yes and no. Being a good actor doesn’t mean I may have a good sense of government but if the Lord says yes, I can never say no. However, for now, I don’t think so; it might be in the future.

How do you rate the present political leaders?

I will say one thing, and I would want my fans out there to please pardon me, those who also watch my films should pardon me. But truth must be told, it is the masses that turned politicians to businessmen. It is the masses that empower politicians to play us like Ludo or chess game. Why, a man wants to contest for a political post, and you did not ask for his legacies; where is he coming from? Before contested, he started giving you rice, doing drama, and giving you money. You were collecting his money. It is obvious he is only investing the money. He is going to make back is money and even make extra. So, where do you want development to come from? Before we chose our next leader, let’s look at their legacy. Let’s give the youth the chance to rule. Let’s stop collecting money and rice from politicians.

Who is Saidi Balogun off the screen?

Off-camera, I am a normal person, I do what God has sent me to do and I find joy helping others. I so much believe in helping others and I thank God.

As a handsome man, have you ever been sexually harassment by a female fan before?

Handsome or no handsome, a lot of actors, a lot of known faces and a lot of celebrities would’ve been so harassed at one time or the other. So, I have, but God is always in charge and I thank God.

How much will you charge to act nude?

To act nude, I can never act nude. That is a different field entirely, they have the porn actors, we have the comedians but for me, that is not my line. Maybe in my next world, for now that’s not my line. For 10billion I can’t do it.

Do you ever regret choosing acting as a career?

I’ve never regretted being an actor. An actor is like a messiah, we are like prophets, we remind people of the past, show them today and make them see into the future. So, I thank God even with or without money, I thank Him for who I am today.

How favourable is the Bank of Industry loan to Yoruba movie sector?

BoI has tried; they won’t come and knock your door. You go there with your proposal; if it is good they will support you. There’s no sentiment. It has nothing to do with one tribe or the other, if you like go there with Calabar film, once they see it can fly, you give them good proposal they will support you.

Recently, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed set up a review committee for the MOPPICON bill. How has this helped the filmmakers?

Alhaji Lai Mohammed is one of the most listening Ministers, we have free access to him at any time, but the MOPPICON thing is sad, we spent months, days, sleeping at job, sitting and putting heads together, writing these things out. The committee has worked; it’s left for my honourable minister to see to its approval.

At times, I feel like crying to know that a film producer will only get 30% while the cinema house gets 60 or 70% of the proceeds from a film.  At the end of the day, the producer will run at a loss. We must have a structure. We are begging, and I am sure the minister is listening. He is a good man. I stand by him any day because he has contributed a lot to the industry. He will surely be remembered for his positive impact.

As the president of Golden Movie Ambassadors in Nigeria, what is the aim and objectives of this association?

The primary goal of Golden Movie Ambassadors of Nigeria is to rebuild and restructure the movie industry. Our members should be able to have a gain of being an association not just sitting down to talk.

How do you think that actors can enjoy quality health services?

Recently, the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, headed by Prof. Temitope Alonge made me the ambassador on health, not for my name sake, it is for me to work out a pact with my association. We will work together to look into our health matters and prepare for the future. Therefore, when there is any health issue, we won’t be seeking for public help, left and right.

How would you feel if you get a role in a Hollywood movie?

Everybody prays to step into the highest level. If I have a role in a Hollywood movie, I will be happy and will thank God. That is a funny question though, I am proud of who I am, I am black and proud, but I will be happy.

As an actor who acts both in English and Yoruba movies, which of these sectors is more rewarding?

Both are rewarding, depending on how you package yourself. Like I said, a movie has no language. Yoruba and English movies are both rewarding, it all depends on your presentation. If you invite me, I see both as equal and I charge for it. It is a moving picture that is what I charge for. So, it depends on you, it has nothing with one language or the other. As for me, they are both equal, and I charge depending on what I want to do.

NTA: It’s economical to deploy existing infrastructure – Analysts

The decision of the Integrated Television Services ( ITS)  to use the existing infrastructure of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in the country’s  Digital broadcasting switch has been described as economical and wise.
According to Muhammed Mubarak, Public Affairs Analysts and also a Member, Progressive Solidarity Forum, Abuja ITS don’t have to  ‘re-invent the wheel’.
Mubarak who was apparently responding to an advert condemning ITS for deploying obsolete equipment said, “The digital switchover is a multi-billion Naira project.
The benefits are immense so are the challenges. But they are teething problems. The major challenge confronting the process now is that of the provision of adequate set-top boxes as well as expansion.
The case of revenue streams and value-added services must be approached with despatch. It is particularly apt that content providers and platform operators must know the cost of transmission on the platform.
Digital broadcasting was a win-win proposition, it was and had never been a ‘winner takes all’ thing.
  • Youths set for “The Labour Room”

Youths set for “The Labour Room”

Thirty seven Nigerian youths selected from every state of the Federation arrived in Abuja on Thursday for the maiden edition of “The Labour Room”, a reality TV show geared towards national development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 37 youths were officially presented at a news conference held at Sandralia Hotel by the Nigeria Rebirth Foundation, organisers of the show.

Mr Isaac Balami, National Coordinator, said that the project provides a platform for youths to explore their rich potential and contribute towards the building of a better Nigeria.

“The Labour Room is the first national development reality TV show in Africa, strategically designed to activate the super potential of Nigerian youths.

“The programme is designed to promote unity in our diversity, and shall over the period, analyse and x-ray the issues of our nationhood, articulating the workable, sustainable solutions and recommendations for reforms.”

“There are 37 selected housemates representing all the states in Nigeria and the FCT to be housed in a ‘Mansion’ for 60 days, and to be broadcast 24 hours daily.”

According to him, the organisers had earlier held audition for the show across the 36 states and the FCT and a contestant selected to represent each state.

He added that the contestants were made to undergo a three-day training in April.

“The training was meant to ensure that the TV show and activities of the contestants go in line with this administration’s agenda and conforms to basic national values and culture.”

He explained that the initiative would, among other benefits, stimulate many young entrepreneurs, create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and complement government’s effort towards promoting national unity and peace.

Balami added that at the end of the show, leaders, entrepreneurs and intellectuals who would contribute to nation building would have been discovered and empowered.

“The members of the public will be allowed to vote for the contestants of their choice, and at the end of the 60 days, four winners will emerge.

“The four of them will then be empowered with N200 million capital to set up a local content driven company towards contributing to national economic development.”

Balami said that the opening ceremony of the reality would hold on Sept.17, 2017 at the International Conference Centre.

He added that for the 60 days, the show would be aired on DSTV, STAR TIMES, NTA and other local and international Televisions with over 200 million targeted viewers across the globe.
