    Official jersey kits for NUGA games unveiled

    The official jersey kits for the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) competition have been unveiled ahead of the games.

    Chairman of consulting firm, Prince Ade Omole, unveiled the jersey at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

    Omole was also named the Honourary Envoy to the games by the Managing Director of Royal CBS Group Limited, Khalifah Onu.

    The CBS Group Limited is the strategic consulting partner for the NUGA 2025 Games.

    The 26th NUGA Games are scheduled to take place from November 6–16, 2025.

    The competition will be hosted by the University of Jos.

    Omole commended the organisers for adopting a “Nigeria First” policy, revealing that the jersey was 100% locally produced, sourced and designed entirely by Nigerian professionals.

    NUGA approves new date for 2025 games in UNIJOS 

    The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Council has approved a new date for the forthcoming NUGA competition to be hosted by the University of Jos. The Competition will now take place from 6th to 16th November, 2025, at the University of Jos.

    The announcement was made, when the NUGA National Executives paid a courtesy visit to the University Management at the Council Chamber, Administrative Building,

    Naraguta Campus of the University, during the NUGA Annual Council meeting which took place in UNIJOS.

    NUGA President, Professor Engr. Mohammed Bawa, who led the delegation, explained that the decision to shift the date came after thorough consultations with key stakeholders.

    He emphasized that the new date was necessary to ensure that critical ongoing projects at Unijos, which would be used for the competition, are completed on time.

    According to Professor Bawa, “After careful consideration and consultation, the NUGA Council agreed to move the competition to November, 2025.

    “This will allow the University of Jos to finish some critical infrastructural projects that are vital for the smooth running of the Games. We’ve experienced, in the past, the risk of institutions losing projects when competitions take place without such projects being completed, and we don’t want that to happen here.”

    As part of the Council decision, Professor Bawa revealed that a Memorandum of Action (MOA) would be signed between NUGA and the University Management to formalize the new date and ensure both parties adheres to it.

    JUST IN: NUGA president, Ogbu, is dead

    Mr Emeka Ogbu, the President of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), is dead.

    Prof. Mohammed Bawa, the Acting President of the association, disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday in Jos.

    Bawa said that Ogbu died on Monday after a brief illness.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ogbu was the Director of Sports at the Enugu State University of Science and technology (ESUT).

    He was elected NUGA president in March 2022.

    UNICAL to host NUGA 2026

    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, has announced that Unical has won the hosting rights for NUGA 2026.

    She also announced the appointment of MediaVision Limited as the Sole and Exclusive Marketers for the games.

    This announcement was made by the vice chancellor during the MoU signing ceremony at the Council Chambers.

    The Vice Chancellor said the university was starting early to ensure the facilities are ready in time for the games.

    She said officials of NUGA will visit the university by the end of 2024 to inspect the facilities.

    She affirmed that under her management, Unical NUGA 2026 promises to be the best NUGA competition in the history of the games.

    The Founder of Media Vision Limited, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, thanked the Vice Chancellor for this opportunity. He promised thatwould contribute their quota to ensuring the unqualified success of UNICAL NUGA 2026.

    Bank-Olemoh also used this opportunity to announce the commencement of the UNICAL NUGA 2026 Mascot design competition, open to all students of the University of Calabar.

    This competition begins on Thursday November 9th, 2023, and will close on Thursday December 7th, 2023.

    The winner will receive 150,000 naira, the runner-up 100,000 naira, and the third place finisher will receive 50,000 naira.

    Mr. Bank-Olemoh outlined the criteria for the contest as follows:

    • The competition is open to only Unical students.
    • The Mascot design must be the original work of the participant.
    • Each entry must incorporate the Unical or Cross – Rivers State colors.

    Unilag bids for 2018 NUGA Games

    The University of Lagos ( Unilag ) is bidding to host the 26th Nigeria University Games Association ( NUGA ) competition in 2018.

    Prof. Rahaman Bello, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the institution, made this known at a forum with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

    Bello, who steps down on Saturday, said that the move was part of the institution’s strategy to strengthen its sports centre and make more impact in sports.

    “There are lots of activities ongoing to restructure University of Lagos Sport Centre. Most of the dilapidated structures are being revived.

    “As a university, we put resources proportionally in all facets. We have so many issues to contend with; we have not put sports aside.

    “Although we did not win the last NUGA games, we were not far below in ranking. We were in the fourth position.

    “That we did not win in the NUGA games does not mean we have not been winning laurels. We won the basketball and two or four major events,” he said.

    NAN reports that the University of Port Harcourt won 150 medals to emerge the overall best in the 25th NUGA held at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi from April 22 to April 29.

    Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, emerged second, while Benson Idahosa University came third.

    Unilag secured the fourth position with 20 medals made up of nine gold, four silver and seven bronze.

    Fifty-seven universities contested for medals at the sports fiesta.

    NUGA: UNIBEN student drowns in River Benue

    A yet to be identified student of the University of Benin has drowned in River Benue, on the closing day of  Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA)  in Makurdi.

    Dr Omeche Onoja, Chairman, NUGA games medical and sanitation subcommittee confirmed the incident.

    The name of the student was not disclosed.

    Onoja said the student had gone to the river to swim when the incident occurred.

    She said his corpse had been deposited at Madonna Hospital in Makurdi.

    ” We had a distress call from some students of the situation but on reaching the river, we found the lifeless body of the student, who has been identified by his colleagues. He was said to have participated in some games.

    “The whole incident could have been avoided,” she said.

    The Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Games was hosted by the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM).

    Fifty-seven universities participated.

    Makurdi, the Benue State capital, was agog last Thursday when an awareness campaign was held to announce the 25th Nigeria Universities Games (NUGA) being hosted by the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM).

    The sports fiesta, which hosts over 1,000 athletes, was declared open yesterday. Staff and students turned out in their numbers to participate in a road show held on major highways and streets.

    A convoy of seven buses conveyed the revellers round the campus and strategic locations in the city during the awareness campaign. Some employees and students, who spoke with CAMPUSLIFE, said the large turnout was an indication that members of the school community were excited to host the games.

    They expressed hope that the insitution would put up good performance and win trophies in the sporting fiesta.

    The competition will last for 11 days.

    The first edition of the Tertiary Institutions Football Competition sponsored by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) will hold between July 23 and July 30 in Ilorin.

    The Kwara Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Kale Ayo, told newsmen in Ilorin on Tuesday that the examination body had approved N25 million to sponsor the competition.

    Ayo who is the Chairman, Main Organising Committee (MOC) said the participants would be drawn from those who excel in NUGA, NIPOGA, COEGA and innovative entrepreneur institutions tournaments.

    He commended the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, for allowing the body to collaborate with the Kwara State Government to sponsor an annual JAMB National Tertiary Institutions Football Championship.

    Ayo however appealed to wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to emulate JAMB and sponsor competitions in other sports such as athletics, judo, squash, badminton, cycling and swimming.

    “This should be part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),’’ he said.

    Also speaking, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology in Kwara, Dr Aminah Ahmed, said sports should continue with its role of a unifying factor in the society.

    She encouraged Nigerians, particularly students of higher institutions in the state, to always engage in sports activities for physical and mental fitness.

    The state’s Director of Sports, Tunde Kazeem, disclosed that three venues would be used in Ilorin for the competition while 400 players and officials were expected at the seven-day event.

    He listed qualifiers for the tournament as the semi-finalists from the NUGA, NIPOGA and NICEGA football events, two institutions from hosts Kwara and other two from innovative entrepreneur institutions.

    `This makes it a competition for teams from 16 higher institutions,’’ Kazeem said.

    The Director of Sports said the top three winners would go home with  certificates and medals, while assuring that adequate security and medical care would be provided during the competition.

    He added that draws for the competition would be done a month before the event in Ilorin.

    In his contribution, Secretary of the MOC and General Manager of Radio Kwara, Abdullateef Adedeji, promised that the Committee would organise a befitting competition which stakeholders would be proud of.

  • 18 universities to participate in NUGA preliminaries – Official

    The Federal University Dutse in Jigawa, says it would host the Zone ‘A’ Preliminaries for the 2017 Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA).

    The university’s Sports Director, Alhaji Iliyasu Hussain, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Friday.

    Hussain said 18 universities from the zone would participate in the event billed to take place between April 2 and April 8.

    He explained that the participating universities would compete for a slot in football, basketball, volleyball, handball, hockey, badminton, lawn tennis and table tennis.

    Others, the director said are; swimming, athletic chess and Taekwondo.

    According to him, all facilities to be used for the game have been renovated to ensure its smooth and successful conduct.

    Hussain lauded the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Fatima Muktar for her support and cooperation in ongoing preparations for the games.

    The director further told NAN that a team of experts from the Zone A NUGA Council would visit the university on April 14 to inspect facilities to be used for the games.

     

  • UAM budgets N6b for NUGA

    The Vice Chancellor Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM), Prof Emmanuel Kucha, has said the institution has budgeted N8billion to host the Nigeria Universities Games (NUGA).

    Speaking when the leadership of the Sports Writers of Nigeria (SWAN) Benue State chapter, led by its Chairman, Uja Emmanuel, paid him a visit, Kucha said that the institution is 90 per cent ready with facilities for the games.

    He said four new hostels were under construction to accommodate over 10,000 sports men and women expected during the two-week meet.  He added that three football pitches and tennis hall are almost completed.

    However, he said the swimming pool and the track, which were not ready, are major obstacles and appealed to the private sector to partner with UAM to host a successful competition.

    The Vice-Chancellor praised SWAN for donating a table tennis board for the games, urging other individuals to take a cue from the sports writers.

    In his speech, Emmanuel said the association visited the vice chancellor to seek partnership for the games.

    He added that Benue people were happy that UAM got the rights to host the games, reiterating the determination of SWAN to provide  coverage for the competition.

    He praised the vice chancellor for his commitment and massive upgrade of facilities ahead of NUGA.

    SWAN members toured faculties being put in place for the games.
