IWD 2025: NUJ FCT Council celebrates resilience, achievements of women in leadership

As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council has joined the global movement in celebrating the resilience, achievements, and contributions of women across all sectors.

This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” underscores the progress made in gender equality while emphasizing the need for continued efforts to break barriers and create more opportunities for women.

Women in journalism, governance, and other professions continue to defy limitations, demonstrating that leadership is driven by competence, vision, and determination rather than gender.

The NUJ FCT Council acknowledges the increasing representation of women in decision-making roles and reaffirms its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for female professionals.

The Council’s dedication to gender inclusivity is further reflected in the historic election of Grace Ike as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council.

Her emergence after 41 years marks a significant milestone, highlighting the evolving role of women in journalism and leadership.

Ike’s victory serves as an inspiration to women within and beyond the media industry, reinforcing the message that leadership is about vision and ability, not gender.

Speaking on the significance of International Women’s Day, Ike emphasized that the occasion should go beyond symbolism—it should be a time for women to truly support one another, both publicly and privately.

She stated, “It’s time to move beyond lip service and stop playing to the gallery. A woman who chooses to abandon her fellow women in an electoral contest, aligning herself with men instead, is not embodying the true essence of womanhood—just as we saw in the NUJ FCT election.”

Ike further stressed the vital role of women in politics and governance, noting that their active participation is essential in reshaping the political landscape.

“Women play a key role in elections, not only as voters but also as leaders, candidates, and agents of change. Their participation can challenge the status quo and drive meaningful progress.

“However, when women betray one another for personal gain or political advantage, they undermine the solidarity and progress crucial for societal transformation,” she said.

She called for self-reflection and unity among women, urging them to rise above past divisions and work together for a common cause.

“This is a moment for introspection, a time to purge ourselves of past wrongs, retrace our steps, and make amends. It’s an opportunity to turn a new leaf and genuinely stand in solidarity with one another—especially in the political arena, where women’s collective power is both needed and invaluable ” Ike said.

She also used the opportunity to call on leaders, the federal government, and well-meaning Nigerians to invest in promoting women’s rights and gender equality.

“The importance of creating opportunities for more women to step into leadership positions cannot be overemphasized. The barriers of the past no longer define us. This milestone is not just mine; it belongs to every woman who dares to challenge the norm,” she affirmed.

The NUJ FCT Council also urged stakeholders to continue supporting and empowering women, ensuring they have access to platforms where they can contribute meaningfully to societal development.

“As more women take up leadership roles, their impact is evident in journalism, governance, and various other fields, where their contributions are shaping policies, narratives, and progress,” she said.

On this International Women’s Day, the NUJ FCT Council stands in solidarity with women worldwide, celebrating their achievements and advocating for a future where leadership knows no gender.

The event, presided over by Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, marked a significant milestone, bringing together over 400 members, including former Chairmen of the Council and past leaders of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).

In her opening address, Comrade Ike emphasized the executive’s commitment to fostering unity and progress within the Council.

She said, “It is a privilege to welcome you all to this momentous first Congress of the NUJ FCT Council under our leadership. Today represents more than a formal gathering; it is an opportunity to reaffirm our shared commitment to unity, progress, and the collective good of our profession.”

Members deliberated on critical national issues, highlighting the rising cost of living as a major challenge.

The Council described the escalating prices of basic goods and services as a heavy burden on Nigerians and called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to address these hardships.

The Congress also expressed concern about the erratic power supply in the Federal Capital Territory, noting its detrimental impact on businesses and residents’ daily lives.

“The frequent disruptions in electricity and water supply are increasing operational costs and reducing profit margins for businesses, placing additional strain on the average Nigerian,” the communiqué stated.

It called on relevant agencies to prioritize the restoration of essential services to improve the quality of life in the region.

The NUJ FCT Council also voiced grave concerns over rising insecurity, including alarming reports of ritual killings and other heinous acts.

It attributed these incidents partly to the ongoing economic downturn and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address economic and security challenges.

The Congress concluded with a pledge of commitment to the unity and advancement of the union for the betterment of its members.
