  • Press Centre invasion: NUJ wants soldiers punished

The national secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for punishment for soldiers that invaded the union’s Press Centre in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Tuesday. NUJ also demanded an apology from the Chief of Army Staff for the soldiers’ misconduct, saying the apologies extended to the state’s NUJ council by the General Officer Commanding 82 Division and the Commander of 14 Brigade were not enough.

The union, in statement yesterday by its National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, described the conduct of the troops deployed to carry out the army’s Operation Python Dance 2 in the Southeast as “terrifying impunity”, saying the invasion of the Press Centre was uncalled for.

NUJ reminded the Federal Government and security operatives that the nation’s constitution required them to protect journalists and create free environment that would enable the media practitioners to perform their statutory duties.

In its four-point demands, NUJ said: “We condemn, in its totality, the conduct of the army at the NUJ Press Centre in Umuahia, Abia State and demand for immediate investigation into this macabre act.

NUJ rejects undemocratic change of govt

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) yesterday warned  against plot by some military officers and unnamed politicians to effect a change of government through violent means.

It said it would be counterproductive for some political interest groups to capitalise on the current situation in the country as caused by recession to push for a personal agenda.

The union, which gave the caution in a statement in Abuja by its National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, asked the Federal Government to “ deal decisively with this evil plot.”

The statement said: “The Nigeria Union of Journalists is alarmed by rumors making the rounds about a planned coup d’état in the country and warns that Nigerians will resist any attempt to change this Government through any other means that is not democratic.

“Accordingly, we appeal for concerted efforts by all Nigerians to defeat the current security challenges in the country and to thwart any attempt at instigating any insurrection.

“Despite the difficulties being faced by the nation, there have been some significant improvements in certain aspects of our endeavors.

“However, we wish to note that such security threats in the North-East and other parts of the country, must be tackled decisively if at all Nigerians will enjoy the benefits of democratic governance.

“Daily, the nation is being confronted by the socio political and economic implications of an unstable country.

“We therefore call on the aggrieved members of the political class whose stock in trade is mischief not to rock the boat by attempting to derail this democratic dispensation.”

The NUJ said coup d’état  will draw back the nation.

The statement added: “The NUJ cautions that it will be counterproductive for some political interest groups to capitalize on the current situation in the country as caused by recession to push for a personal agenda.

“We call on all and sundry to support government, to focus on the economic reintegration of the country rather than the uncalled for quest for a change of government through violent undemocratic means.

“Nigerians have sacrificed enough and it is only through concerted efforts and cooperation of all can the nation achieve sustainable peace and development.

“While calling on government to deal decisively with this evil plot, we warn the proponents of this machination both within the political class and the military to desist from this ruinous path forthwith as this will not suffice as the consequences will be grave for an already restive nation.”

Initiated around 2000/2001 with an exchanged of visits by both unions, he said the cooperation did not last due to some teething problems encountered.

His words: “It is therefore a happy moment for me that I have this singular honor of superintending over this reawakening.

“Last year, both unions took the bold initiative of reviving this bond which today is culminating into signing this historic document, an agreement which, for the first instance will last for four years and may subsequently be reviewed and endorsed for another mutually agreed term.

“It is also instructive to add that this cooperation will open more channels of communication for both of us and help promote and strengthen integration.

“It will also enable us to achieve greater degree of participation in international activities and expand such activities for growth.”

The leader of ACJA delegation, Zhang Mingxin, said the signing of the Mou is a welcome development because it will help foster growth.

  • NUJ, RATTAWU disrupt Bayelsa Radio’s operations

The labour dispute at Radio Bayelsa yesterday resulted in the disruption of operations, as members of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) protested at the station’s entrance.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports workers had threatened to shut down the station, but government officials intervened.

The station could not broadcast its news and current affairs programme, ‘Hot Sea’, as the guest, Bayelsa State Commandant of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, was locked out of the premises.

NAN learnt the workers urged Governor Seriake Dickson to remove the General Manager, Dr. John Idumange.

The workers organised a fasting and prayer session at the station before the protest.

Reports said the move by Idumange, who was appointed on December 6, to reposition the station, caused disagreement between workers and management.

Following disruption of programmes, government officials, led by Chief of Staff to Bayelsa Governor Mr. Talford Ongolo came to the station to meet workers’ representatives.

The Information commissioner summoned the general manager and union leaders to resolve the dispute.

The workers said since assumption of office on December 6, Idumange had not convened any management meeting.

The general manager dismissed the allegations, accusing the unions of being used to sabotage his efforts to reposition the station.

He told NAN the workers were afraid of certificate verification, insisting there was no going back, as it was authorised by the supervising ministry.

Idumange said anyone who did not participate in the exercise would be declared a ghost worker.

“The exercise is not my brainchild. My predecessor had compiled a list of over 200 workers for redeployment.

“Those who wish to continue working here should participate or risk losing their jobs,’’ he said.

The general manager said the senior officials affected by the reforms used the unions to resist them.

He said the exercise was to ensure employees were placed in the appropriate sections, as well as to fish out those with fake certificates.

Idumange said: “There is nothing like industrial disharmony. This small radio station has 346 workers. Employment and job placement have never followed due process.

“To correct these anomalies, we are beginning a certificate and workers’ verification, which will last four days.

“Most of those with fake certificates are afraid and are creating unrest.”

He went on: “They wrote me to stop the exercise, but the Ministry of Information said it must continue. Ghost workers must be fished out and the payroll cleaned up.

“The station’s wage bill is N35 million monthly and it is not sustainable. My predecessor incurred N40million debt.

“The unions are instigated by the heads of department involved in the illegal recruitment.”
