Dortmund dismiss  Sahin after UCL  setback

Borussia Dortmund have fired head coach Nuri Sahin in the wake of Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League loss at Bologna, saying they had “lost faith” in him.

Dortmund were beaten finalists in the competition last season, but the loss on Tuesday was the club’s fourth successive defeat in all competitions.

In the Bundesliga, Dortmund sit 10th , 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

German media reported potential successors included former Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag, who has been seen attending Dortmund games recently, or one-time Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen handler Roger Schmidt.

Sahin was assistant to former Dortmund coach Edin Terzic in last season’s surprise run to the Champions League final where they lost to Real Madrid and the 36-year-old was promoted to head coach in the summer.

“We have unfortunately lost faith that we will achieve our sporting goals,” sporting CEO Lars Ricken said.

Ricken added the decision “hurts… but was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.

“We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much, we hoped for a long collaboration and until the end we had hope that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together.”

The sacking continues a tumultuous time for recent Dortmund managers.

Since Jurgen Klopp’s departure in 2015, Dortmund have had eight head coaches, including Terzic’s two stints at the club. Only one, Lucien Favre, has stayed for longer than two years.

Dortmund has since  announced U19 coach Mike Tullberg would take over on an interim basis starting with Saturday’s home clash with Werder Bremen.

A disappointed Sahin said he “unfortunately was not able to live up to Dortmund’s sporting ambitions at this point in time.

“I wish this special club all the best.”

Sahin’s hiring maintained the club’s recent strategy of hiring former players in leadership roles.

Terzic grew up in the area and was a Dortmund scout and junior coach before taking the top job.

Ricken and sporting director Sebastian Kehl also had long careers as Dortmund players.

Sahin came through Dortmund’s junior ranks and played 274 games for the club – he was a member of the side that won the 2011 Bundesliga title – either side of stints at Real Madrid and Liverpool.

The Germany-born former Turkish international’s first head coach position was at Turkish side Antalyaspor, where he finished his playing career.

Sahin took Antalyaspor to seventh and 13th-place finishes in the league, before he departed to become assistant manager at Dortmund in January 2023.

After Tuesday’s loss, Sahin told reporters “if I am the problem, or if a change of coach solves the issues, then that’s no problem at all.”

Under Sahin this season, Dortmund have found it particularly tough away from their 82,000-capacity Westfalenstadion fortress, having lost nine and won just four of their 15 matches.

In addition to their poor league form, Sahin’s side were eliminated in the last 32 of the German Cup by Wolfsburg.

They do though still entertain hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League, despite the defeat by Bologna, as they lie 13th in the table.

Soccer coaches are frequently dismissed as clubs around the world make changes in their pursuit of success.

Across Europe’s top leagues—Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1—head coaches are regularly fired or step down mid-season, with managerial tenures becoming increasingly shorter each year.

As the 2024-25 European football season moves into the new year, several managers have already faced the axe. Following Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday, the club’s management dismissed head coach Nuri Sahin on Wednesday.

However, Sahin is not the only casualty this season.

Several other clubs have also parted ways with their coaches in a bid to turn their fortunes around.

Here is a list of managers who have been sacked so far this season:

    Ten Hag – Man Utd – October 28, 2024

    Steve Cooper – Leicester City – November 24, 2024

    Gary O’Neil – Wolverhampton Wanderers – December 15, 2024

    Russell Martin – Southampton – December 15, 2024

    Julen Lopetegui – West Ham – January 8, 2025

    Sean Dyche – Everton – January 9, 2025

    Nuri Sahin – Dortmund – January 22, 2025

Borussia Dortmund have sacked head coach Nuri Sahin after the 2-1 Champions League defeat at Bologna.

The German side have lost four successive matches in all competitions since the winter break.

Defeat to Bologna on Tuesday was their third loss in this season’s Champions League, meaning last season’s runners-up need a result against Shakhtar Donetsk in their final league phase game to have the chance to automatically reach the knockouts.

A run of three domestic defeats to start 2025 has put them 10th in the Bundesliga, seven points outside the top four and therefore endangering their chances of a return to the Champions League next term.

“We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much, we hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end we had hoped that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together,” said Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken.

“This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”

Sahin, 36, who had two stints at the club as a player, said: “Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season.

“I wish this special club all the best.”

Sahin was appointed Dortmund boss in June 2024 as a replacement for Edin Terzic, who left the club following their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

UCL: Injury worries  for Dortmund  against Sturm Graz

Injury-ravaged Borussia Dortmund are stretched thin and running out of time as they prepare for today’s Champions League home game against Austrian side Sturm Graz, manager Nuri Sahin said.

Last season finalists Dortmund are without wingers Karim Adeyemi and Julien Duranville, midfielder Gio Reyna as well as defenders Niklas Suele, Julian Ryerson and Yan Couto among others.

Despite having nine players injured, Dortmund secured a 2-1 comeback victory against second-placed RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday, ending their three-game losing streak in all competitions.

Midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, who went off injured in the 67th minute against Leipzig, is fit to play against Sturm Graz, while winger Jamie Gittens remains uncertain for the match.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and central defender Waldemar Anton, are still doubtful, leaving backup goalkeeper Alexander Meyer likely to stand between the posts once again and 18-year-old defender Almugera Kabar could make his Champions League debut.

“The known absentees remain. I don’t think anyone will come back, apart from Almugera Kabar,” Sahin told reporters .”We will have to see about ‘Waldi’ (Anton). It will be a race against time. We did not get the green light on Greg (Kobel) yet.

“Meyer has an extraordinary character. He is very popular in the squad and his qualities were on display at the weekend. To have a number two like that at this level is amazing.”

I’m honoured to be able to be part of a season where we played the longest, and to be able to get to know this team. My first year and experience winning a World Series has been a tremendous honour.

Sturm Graz have lost all three of their Champions League games. Dortmund suffered a 5-2 loss at Real Madrid in their last match but won their previous two matches against Club Brugge and Celtic.

Austrian international Sabitzer was particularly excited about the fixture. “I come from Graz, I grew up there. I have many memories. Our mission is to win tomorrow(today), that’s clear,” he said.

“I’m already feeling better (about my injury). I’m confident that it will work out tomorrow.”
