Police deployment to NURTW secretariat constitutional, says CP

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, has said the deployment of police officers to the Secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) is constitutional to avert a crisis.

President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero had raised concerns about the “invasion” of the Union and an alleged attempt to dethrone a legally elected leadership.

Responding, a statement issued on Tuesday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officers, SP Josephine Adeh said: “Police Command has found it pertinent to respond to the recent statement issued by the leadership of the NLC regarding the deployment of police personnel to the headquarters of the NURTW.

“It is essential to clarify that the deployment of police personnel to the headquarters of the Union is solely to avert impending bloodletting and clash between two factional groups led by Tajudeen Baruwa and Basiru Agbede.

“The primary duty of the police is to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, and this includes preventing the breakdown of law and order.

“In situations where there are concerns about potential violence, unrest, or disputes that may escalate into violence, the police are obligated to take preventive measures to protect lives and property.

“The deployment of police personnel to the NURTW secretariat is not an act of interference in the internal affairs of the Union.

“Rather, it is a proactive step to forestall any potential violence or illegal actions that could arise from disputes within the Union.”

The Police, CP said, would not fold its hands and allow the leadership feud between the two groups to degenerate into a breakdown of law and order.

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has lifted the suspension order slammed on the Lagos State Chairman of the union, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo) and other members by the former president of the union, Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa.

The newly-inaugurated National President, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, lifted the suspension in his inaugural address in Abuja.

He said one of the problems created by the Baruwa administration was the arbitrary suspension and expulsion of members he considered as his enemies.

“Through this, he destroyed the union, especially in the Southwest. So, I, Alhaji Agbede, on behalf of other members of my executives, leaders and members of our union throughout the country, hereby lift the illegal suspension of our esteemed members throughout the country.

“Of particular concern is the suspension of Alhaji Akinsanya, the Lagos State chairman of our union. He was unjustifiably treated by Alhaji Baruwa. It was a pure case of misuse of power. We hereby appeal to Alhaji Akinsanya to come back home. NURTW is one big family and this is where he belongs,” he said.

Agbede said he will ensure all state councils of the union currently under the state-owned Park and Garages Committee returns to NURTW.

“By the special grace of God, we shall meet Southwest governors for discussion on how to work together. We will cooperate with them in Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Lagos, Ondo and Ekiti states to get our union back on track. It is a new dawn in NURTW,” he added.

On other plans, he said the union will work with the Federal Government to ensure that people benefit from government programmes.

NURTW 2023: Union members disclaim illegal delegates’ conference

Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) have urged the public, especially those in the labour circle, to disregard a purported delegates’ conference in Nasarawa State.

It described it as illegal and an insult on the police authorities.

Men of the Nigeria Police last week arrested the President of the union. Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa, for allegedly importing thugs to the Federal Capital Territory.

They also sealed off the union’s secretariat to prevent breakdown of law and order.

Speaking about the situation, the National Vice President of the union, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, appealed to members to remain calm and disregard any rumour concerning any delegates’ conference.

“There was no delegates’ conference anywhere. It is all rumour. The tenure of our administration will expire on August 28, 2023 and after that a new leadership will emerge.

“If they tell you they held any delegates’ conference, ask them to provide a proof. There must be press coverage, both newspaper and television coverage as a standard. There must be pictures and video coverage of the event. They have to show evidence.

“NURTW is a national organisation and when it holds its delegates’ conference, the whole world must know.

“The standard practice is to invite NTA, Channels and other prominent national TV stations as well as national newspapers to cover the event live.”

He appealed to members to remain calm and continue to support his ambition to rescue the union from maladministration of the last four years.

  • Ajimobi warns NURTW against violence in change of leadership

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State yesterday warned the members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state to eschew any form of violence and crisis in their effort at changing power.

The advice is coming following feelers from some quarters that a faction in the body is threatening to take over power from the incumbent immediately a change of guard occurs at the state governorship level.

Ajimobi gave the advice while playing host to the National President of the Union, Mr Najeem Yasin, who led other national officers of the union to his office on a courtesy call.

The governor noted that the union must stick to the provisions of its constitution in terms of change of power and ensure that the era of using cutlasses and guns to take over motor parks in the state should be gone forever.

While thanking the NURTW boss for his support to achieving peace in the state chapter of the union, Governor Ajimobi enjoined a strict adherence to the union’s constitution in the selection of its leaders.

Ajimobi said: “Our administration came on board when the state was a garrison command. There was brigandage everywhere caused mainly by the activities of NURTW members. There were so many no-goareas across the state, especially in Ibadan.

“We promised not to interfere in the activities of the union and restore peace to the state which we achieved tremendously. Our administration did very well by whatever yardstick anyone might intend to use and we are the most peaceful, successful and security-conscious administration in the history of the state.

“I am proud to say that whatever we have achieved today in Oyo State, especially in terms of peace and security, Alhaji Yasin and his executives contributed to it.

“On your election, just follow the law and do whatever the law says. Don’t bend it. And leaders must know that anywhere you are, don’t want to be there forever because you cannot be there forever.”

Speaking earlier, the NURTW boss said that nobody or group could take over leadership of the union unconstitutionally, noting that the era of taking over motor parks with guns, cutlasses and violence is long gone in the history of the union in the state.

He added that all transitions at any level of the union would be in compliance with its constitution, calling on members to sustain the peace established under the Ajimobi-led administration.

“Your Excellency, we are here in Oyo State to meet our members and after the meeting, I felt it is important to visit you. We want to appreciate you for the peace that reigned in our union in the state.

“Since the inception of our union in Oyo State, we have never enjoyed relative peace like the one witnessed under your administration. Today, we have forgotten the era of using cutlasses and other dangerous weapons to take over the leadership of the union in the state.

“Anyone who tries to take over unconstitutionally or violently should be ready to face the full wrath of the law. We are now affiliated to the International Transport Federation, and so we have gone beyond brigandage and violence.

“Some people have been going around that by May 29, another leadership is taking over but I have told them that it cannot be because it is against our unions constitution.

“By August, we would have our delegate conference where I will step down for another leadership to come in. In October, we will have state delegate conferences across the 36 states.

“We know the sacrifices you have made in our union to enjoy the current level of peace and stability and we will never allow anyone to take us back. And that is why we have come to thank you”.

  • Over 50, 0000 tricycle operators join NURTW

No fewer than 50,000 members of the Tricycle Owners/Operators Association (TOOA) will join the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), TOOA Chairman in Lagos State Comrade Joseph Odusanya has said.

Odusanya, who addressed reporters yesterday at Magodo, Lagos, said: “We are making history in the transport sector. We are breaking away from TOOA to become full-fledged members of the NURTW.

“Starting from Wednesday (today), the group will hold its meeting temporarily at Ketu from 12pm. We are no longer members of TOOA. We are now full members of the NURTW and we will start issuing NURTW tickets.”

He said they abandoned TOOA because of lack of decorum, violations of the constitution and utter disrespect for the leadership in the association, adding that the atmosphere at NURTW was more conducive for their operations.

“We want Nigerians to see that democracy is still the best. By virtue of that we will not indulge in thuggery or violence,” Odusanya said.

He urged members to display the highest level of sportsmanship and understanding of the law in their activities, saying they should not resort to violence when resolving disagreement.

TOOA legal counsel Kabir Akanbi said the move was backed by the law, adding that Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution allowed the right to freedom of association.

He said Article 5 of the NURTW Constitution allowed whoever had the interest to be members of the union.

“What TOOA members have done is within the confines of the law. They’ve once been with TOOA, but now they are saying they’re no longer with TOOA. You’re now full members of the NURTW rightly and constitutionally backed by the law of the land.

“They’ve not contravened any law and we are ready to challenge anything that poses a threat to our freedom as a people,” Akanbi said.

The Campaign Officer, Civil Liberty Organisation, who is also a TOOA ambassador, Mr. Babatunde Ashafa, described the move as a transition to democratic transformation.

He advised members to cooperate with their leaders.

Said he: “We say no to thuggery and undemocratic practices. This is a new dawn. Anything that will cause loss of lives or casualties, we stand to condemn it. We are transforming tricycle operations peacefully in Lagos and Nigeria.

Ashafa enjoined members to emulate the NURTW Chairman in Lagos State, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, for his approach in resolving disputes and problems.

  • Tensions in A’Ibom as Policemen kill NURTW chairman

There is palpable tension in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital following the gruesome murder of the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Ubong Udo Udofia, by angry Policemen.

Udofia, 45, a.k.a ‘Evolution’, was said to have been killed by four policemen who used to hit him after trying unsuccessfully to kill him through direct shooting.

Narrating her ordeal at their home at 179, Ikpa Road, Afaha Oku, Uyo, the state capital on Friday, the distraught wife, Margareth, fighting back tears, explained that her husband met his untimely death when minor argument with a Policeman resulted in full blown brawl.

“I was just returning from the market when I was called suddenly to witness what happened to my husband. When I got to the place, my husband was already gasping for breath until he gave up in my present”.

According to her, “a Policeman had parked his car and was loading passengers near the Itam motor park, when members of the task force working for my husband accosted him and directed that he should enter the park and load so others should not join”.

The Policeman, on mufti, she added, resisted and the task force members demanded for the car key and he refused. The car, it was gathered, was pushed into the park on the orders for the deceased to adjudicate on the matter.

“My husband was inside another vehicle waiting for the car owner, not knowing he had called four of his colleagues, who arrived, and immediately opened fire but when the bullets could not get at him, they resorted to using gun butts to club him till he became unconscious.

“Several other Policemen attached to construction firm, Julius Berger, were called for more reinforcement and more sporadic shooting followed leading to people scampering for safety including the task force officers,” she explained.

Mrs. Udofia, who lamented over what would become of her nine children left behind with the death of her husband, called the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the state Police Command and the government of governor Udom Emmanuel, to ensure justice was done in the case.

“We have nine children to take care of and the eldest is just 15 and none has entered the university yet. So my appeal is that my husband should not die in vain because all the evidence point to deliberate and premeditated murder because my husband and the task force members did not beat the Policeman.

“All they did was just to direct him to comply with the regulation of loading in the park and not constitute road nuisance by loading on the road side because touting is illegal in Akwa Ibom.

“Luckily, one of the Policemen who participated in my husband’s death was trying to escape from the scene and unfortunately for him, his identity card fell off his shirt and was picked up as evidence on the scene.

“The name of the Policeman is Sergeant Nwafor Silas, from Ebonyi State Police Command and attached to Julius Berger with service number; 425015”, she said.

Disturbed by the incident, it was gathered that NURTW officials were poised for protest, even as angry youths of Afaha Oku, were said to have plotted a reprisal attack.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Itam Division, CSP Francis Irabor, who visited the deceased at the God’s Own Hospital, Park Road, before he died, promised full scale investigation into the matter, assuring that appropriate punishment would be meted on the culprits.

Besides, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Odike Macdon, confirmed the incident but could not ascertain whether any reprisal attacks were in the offing.

The truth of the matter, he assured would be known at the end of the investigations, even as he appealed to the people not to take the laws into their own hands.

The remains of the late task force chair, according to the family have been deposited at the Etang Ekak Mortuary along IBB Way, Uyo.

On the potential violence that may be foisted on the state by leaders and members of the state’s chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Makinde said he would not allow them to bring back violence because he would dialogue with them continuously.

“I have sent messages to the NURTW to avoid violence. They don’t have my support. We want peace in Oyo and efforts are on to dialogue with them and ensure there is no resurgence of violence.”
