    Engineer charged with raping minor

    A 32-year-old engineer, Bayonne Lekan, was on Friday brought  before a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly raping a minor at a construction site.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of child defilement.

    Insp. Nurudeen Thomas, the prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometime in May at Maduko Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.

    Thomas said the accused, who is a builder, was working at a site close to the eight-year-old girl’s house,where he sighted her.

    “The girl went to their neighbour’s house to play when the parents went out and that was where the accused saw her and lured her to project site to rape her.”

    According to him, the police have evidence to establish that the case of the accused raping the girl.

    The offence contravenes Section 262 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to life imprisonment on conviction.

    Lekan, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, describing the allegation as “laughable’’.

    He said medical analysis had certified him impotent, adding “I am innocent of the charge as I have never had erection in my life.’’

    The accused asked the court to grant him bail, but it was opposed by the prosecutor.

    “Your Worship, I am against granting the accused bail because he can jump bail.

    “It is also in the interest of justice and public safety  for him to be kept in detention to prevent a repeat of such act while this case is still pending,” the prosecutor said.

    In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Kikelomo Ayeye granted the accused bail in the sum N500,000  with two sureties in like sum.

    She directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions  (DPP) for advice.

    The case was adjourned until Oct.11.

    Driver docked for impregnating step-daughter

    A driver, Monday Udoh, was on Friday brought before the Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly impregnating his 14-year-old step daughter.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that Udoh, 39, committed the offence in April at Eleko Beach in Ibeju Lekki, near Lagos.

    Thomas said that the accused had been having unlawful carnal knowledge of the step-daughter and eventually impregnated her.

    He said that Udoh, who had fathered two children from the girl’s mother, started his sexual escapade with the minor since 2014 when the girl’s mother travelled to the village.

    “My lord, Udoh started his sexual harassment when the little girl was 12 years old, when her mother left her in his custody and travelled to the village

    “He eventually took her virginity in April and impregnated her. The girl is now more than 20 weeks pregnant.

    “He threatened to strike the girl with spirit of madness if she mentioned it to anyone.

    “But on realising that she was pregnant, she ran away from home and told one of her mother’s friends, who took up the case and reported to the appropriate authorities.”

    Thomas said that the offence contravened Section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 260 stipulates 14 years imprisonment for anyone found guilty.

    Udoh, however, denied the offence.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Kikelomo Ayeye, slammed a bail of one million naira on Udoh.

    She also ordered that the driver Udoh should produce two sureties in like sum and that the sureties must be civil servants not below grade level 15.

    She adjourned the case until Sept.13 for hearing.

    Security guard in court over alleged rape of 15-year-old half-sister

    A 36-year-old man, Henry Asuquo, alleged to have raped his 15-year-old half-sister, was arraigned at a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Wednesday.

    The accused, a security guard, who resides at Saint Saviour St., Sura, Lagos Island, is facing a two-count charge of rape and sexual harassment and assault.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that the offences were committed between March, 2013 and June, 2017 at the apartment of the accused.

    He said that the victim had been staying with her half-brother of same mother since she was brought to Lagos from the village at the age of five.

    The alleged said that the accused had been sexually assaulting the girl ever since she was 11 years.

    “The accused had been sexually assaulting the girl on different occasions whenever his wife was not around, raping her and having anal sex with her.

    “When the girl started reaching adolescent she started fighting back; since then the accused would beat her to a pulp for any slight mistake.

    “On June 11, when he tried raping her again, the 15-year-old grabbed his scrotum.

    “While he was writhing in pain, she had the opportunity to run to the nearest police station to report,” Thomas told the court.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 263 and 264 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised)

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences.

    In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Kikelomo Ayeye, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N1 million, with two sureties each in like sum.

    She adjourned the case until July 5 for mention.

    Chef docked for defiling girl

    A chef, Godwin Obot, 40, was arraigned in Lagos on Wednesday for allegedly defiling his neighbour’s eight-year-old daughter after luring the girl into his room with soft drink.

    The accused was brought before a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court, charged with defilement of a minor.

    Obot, however, pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Kikelomo Ayeye, directed said that Obot must provide two sureties, one of whom should be a community leader.

    Ayeye said that the other surety should be a civil servant on grade level 16.

    She said that the accused should be remanded in prison if he failed to meet the bail conditions.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Nurudeen Thomas, told court that Obot committed the offence on May 18 at about 2 p.m. at Esther Adeleke Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    Thomas said that the accused defiled the eight-year-old when her parents were away at work.

    “Obot, who knew the parents of the girl were not at home, lured her into his room with a glass of drink when she came back from school.

    “The little girl slept off and when she woke up she saw that the accused was on top of her on his bed, inserting his fingers in her private part.

    “She was in pain from stomach upset and bleeding when her parents came back. She explained what the accused did to her, which led to the arrest of the accused,” the prosecutor stated.

    Thomas said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Section 137 stipulates that anybody, who defiles a minor, is guilty of felony and is liable to life imprisonment.

    The case was adjourned until June 7.
