  • Pushback against Operation No Okada

In Awka, Anambra State’s capital, and Onitsha, its business hub, commercial motorcycle operators have until July 1 to find an alternative job. NWANOSIKE ONU reports that the operators, clergy and others are fighting the state government

COMPARATIVELY, the July 1st deadline given by the Anambra State government for commercial motorcyclists to quit Awka, the state capital, and Onitsha, its commercial nerve, is coming late. In Lagos and some other states in the Southeast and Southeast , that directive was issued earlier, though operational in areas off the highways, in some cases.

The overwhelming reasons for the ban on commercial motorcycles or okada are crime and safety concerns. Everywhere okada goes, criminality and ghastly accidents follow. In Lagos, okada accidents became so frequent and deadly that a special ward called okada was created at the famous Igbobi orthopaedic hospital.

Still, no one can deny that okada operators took up the job not out of fascination for it but out of sheer necessity to survive in the face of crippling unemployment. Nor can anyone gloss over the fact that operators play a huge role in transporting people to places where buses and taxis are not found, and appreciably fast.

In Anambra, the directive has become a source of worry to many people. Governor Willie Obiano had on May 22 banned okada operations in the two cities, which according to him, could be extended to other cities in the state in no distant time.

The action has continued to generate controversy in the state. The National President of Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria (MTUN) Chief John Onedibe has called on the governor to give okada operators a sense of belonging in the state.

Not only the operators that are irritated by the directive. The Anglican Bishop of Nnewi-ichi in Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state, Most Rev Ephraim Ikeakor said the ban might be costly and deadly, if the decision is not rescinded.

Ikeakor, who spoke at the Saint Stephens Anglican synod in Nnewi-ichi, said rather than outright ban, their operational scope should be limited.

The state government’s statement was issued by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Mr James Eze.

He said the ban was in two of the major cities of Awka an Onitsha.

Obiano further said the decision was taken to reduce crime and criminality in Anambra State, which he said was one of the things he promised Ndi Anambra

But speaking in Nnewi, the national president of the union, Onedibe, while briefing reporters, debunked the claim that the operators were all criminals, but agreed there were some of them who were not clean in the business.

Onedibe said, “It is not new that the essence of government is to make life easy and bearable for citizens and not otherwise. Government especially a democratic one such as ours, must consider the voice of majority and minority, the rich and poor for it to thrive and succeed in its governance of the people.

“Where government considers what is good for the wealthy alone without thinking of how the poor class may feel, with due respect, it then means that the government is for the wealthy alone and such does not protect and represent the interest of all.

“How can the government decide to ban Okada without first of all consulting the stakeholders or at least invite public opinion on the matter?”

He gave the instance of how Prof Ben Ayade of Cross River State, who abolished all forms of taxation and levies on low income earners in the state, including Okada riders, which he said was what leadership should be.

He stressed that the real reason behind the presumed banning of Okada in the state was still not clear to the people, especially the poor Okada riders.

”Even if there are genuine reasons to stop Okada riders from plying in the state, government should provide alternative jobs for them, instead of keeping them unemployed.

Onedibe appealed to the government to support the operation of Okada riders in the state, instead of banning their operations, because many of them trained their children and were still training their children who he said would become medical doctors, engineers, nurses, lawyers, bankers, pilots, politicians, priests and what have you, from the proceeds of Okada.

He said “There is no better and quicker means of inter-town transportation than Okada, whether the road is good or not is not what an Okada wants to know, as far as he would be paid after rendering his service unlike taxi cabs.

Onedibe opined that the Union was ready to work with government at all levels to produce better and progressive state.

“We contributed immensely to the success of this present government in Anambra State, during the past election, which resulted in APGA winning 21/21, a feat that has never happened in the history of Anambra State,” he said

For the Anglican prelate, Ikeakor, the state government should listen to the voice of reason, instead of taking the action it did recently, adding that the consequences could be devastating in the state.

  • Anambra records 2000 cases of tuberculosis

Anambra state has been hit by over 2000 cases of tuberculosis, says the state commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike.

The commissioner said this on Monday in his office in Awka, while briefing reporters that the patients were receiving treatment at various Directly Observed Therapy Centres in the State.

He hinted that Anambra State and 13 other states, including Federal Capital Territory (FCT), contributed to over 75 percent of the total TB burden in Nigeria.

The theme of his briefing was “Find TB, Treat TB and work Together to Eliminate TB”.

The Commissioner waved aside the belief that TB could be caused by voodoo.

He said the disease was caused by a germ called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, adding that it was spread through the air when people who had active TB in their lungs sneeze, cough, spit, speak or sing.

Akabuike added that people living with HIV were more vulnerable to TB infection, adding that the ailment could be cured when detected early.

He therefore commended the state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano for the prompt payment of salaries of health workers and provision of health facilities for the TB programme as well as signing of MoU with the global funds to contribute 20 percent of the funds by the donor to control TB in the State.

Earlier, the State Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Officer, Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Okolie and the Director Primary Health and Disease Control, Dr. Emmanuel Okoye  had stressed the need for people to go for diagnosis and treatment when detected, adding that diagnosis and treatment were free.

Agony as family of seven is buried in Anambra

Azia community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State was yesterday, thrown into mourning, following the burial of a family of seven that died in a gas explosion in Ajegunle, Lagos State on July 20.

Markets and shops were closed in respect to the family.

The deceased were Charles Obidiegwu, 51, his wife Esther, five children – Isaac, Ebube, the sister in-law, Mary, Kate and his son.

Death came calling when the gas cooker Esther was cooking with caught fire.

The late Charles ran a medicine shop and was a member of the Chosen Charismatic Church in Lagos.

Tears flowed like a river as sympathisers lamented the doom that befell the community.

The deceased’s elder brother, Mr. Livinus Obidigwe lamented: “My younger brother’s wife was cooking at about 12pm when the gas exploded.

“The explosion may have been caused by a leakage which they didn’t know about. None of them escaped because the kitchen was both the entry and exit point.

“Before fire fighters arrived, the damage had been done; my younger brother had died and the others died in the hospital seven days later.

Chimezie Obidiegwu, looking devastated, lacked words to express his feelings. He was hopeful that his late brother’s love, understanding, coupled with the fear of God, would see them through.

In his sermon, the officiating priest, Rev. Fr. Jude Unigwe condoled the family and urged them not to question why it happened the way it did, as only God had the answer.

He urged the people to live a good life as nobody knows when and how death would come.

“It is a painful death and nobody deserves to die in that manner but nobody can question God; he knows the best. Nkwankwa village should use this death to unite and be their brother’s keeper.

“God allows things like this to happen so that the living can learn and come to repentance,” Rev. Unigwe said.

•Party: blackmailing governor over Oloyede’s safety ‘ll be futile

Attempt by any group or persons to use the safety of Justice Folahanmi Oloyede as a strategy to throw Osun State into chaos would be futile, the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday.

It explained that from the first day that the state government became aware of judge’s petition for the governor’s impeachment, special security arrangements were provided to prevent anything untoward happening to her.

The party, which spoke in a statement by its spokesman, Kunle Oyatomi, said media campaigns alleging danger or insecurity to the life of Justice Oloyede were aimed at blackmailing the Governor Rauf Aregbesola administration.

The party said: “Unknown to the sponsors of this wicked campaigns of calumny, right from day one that Justice Oloyede submitted her petition, the government had taken a proactive measure by alerting the head of the courts in Osun, Chief Justice Adepele Ojo and security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to provide adequate and enhanced security around the person and residence of Justice Oloyede.

“Justice Oloyede herself cannot deny the fact of this enhanced security around her person and residence up till now.”

The statement added that Aregbesola took the precautionary measure, “bearing in mind what opponents of his administration were capable of orchestrating with the life of Justice Oloyede”.

It added: “This is because of the antecedents of the sponsors of this inexplicable and unnecessary tension in our state that they might want to use the opportunity of her petition against the governor to unduly stoke crisis in the state.

“It is, therefore, worrisome that several weeks after this had happened, the scallywags are still pursuing their totally untenable subversion of the popular will by campaigning on the pages of newspapers, a threat that never existed, except in their weird imagination and criminal intentions.”

The APC called on the public to be wary of the activities of those plotting to throw the state into chaos, asking the security agencies to be alert.

“This is to alert members of the public and all security agencies of the criminal intentions of the sponsors of these orchestrated campaigns to prevent our peaceful state from being plunged into needless anarchy.

“Osun has been peaceful and remains so and any impression of tension or anarchy being created is just a manifestation of the evil plots of those who are in desperate pursuit of an agenda to plunge the state into crisis,” the statement said.

  • ‘No rift between Obi, Ugokwe’

A group, the Anambra League of Young Professionals, has debunked speculations that there is a rift between former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and ex-Nigerian Ambassador to Austria, Dr. Jerry Ugokwe, over ministerial appointment.

It, however, urged Obi to solicit the assistance of President Goodluck Jonathan in making Ugokwe the next minister from the state.

Since the exit of former Aviation Minister Princess Stella Oduah, many have been jostling to replace her.

In a statement yesterday in Awka, the group said the cap fits Ugokwe, a former lawmaker, who represented Idemili North and South.

It said: “Mr. President, it will amount to a disservice if a novice, a political neophyte and a charlatan becomes a ministerial appointee. Ugokwe has paid his dues in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and in Anambra politics.

“Obi is a man of integrity, who stands for equity and fairness. Little wonder he promised making a man from Anambra North the governor and he fulfilled his promise. We are hopeful he will not shortchange Anambra Central by allowing usurpers to take over the affairs of this state.

“Anambra League of Young Professionals solicits Obi’s support by prevailing on President Jonathan to pick Ugokwe as a minister from this state.”
