Nigeria needs more tertiary institutions, says Nwobodo

Former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, has said the number of universities and tertiary institutions in Nigeria cannot be too many, considering the population of youths in the country.

He made the remark in his home at Amechi, in Enugu South Local Government of Enugu State, where the national leadership of the Federal Polytechnic Oko Alumni Association, presented him with the Founders Award.

The elder statesman, responding to questions from reporters on the quality of tertiary institutions springing up across the country, said the number of universities in the country was not yet commensurate with the population of the country and the demand gap.

He said: “Universities can never be too many in the country, considering the population. So, we need more universities or tertiary institutions, considering the number of applicants and those admitted. The demand gap is too wide.

“As you already know, each year, close to two million candidates apply for admission into Nigerian universities, but less than half of that number gain admission into tertiary institutions.

“To me, this a far cry and something that worries parents and families of candidates and the candidates themselves.”

Nwobodo, therefore, called on the authorities to ensure any institution given licence to operate must guarantee quality education because, to him, whether government or private school, the products remain Nigerians.

On the Founders Award given to him, he expressed happiness that he was able to elevate the college to a diploma awarding institution after it was established by Dr. Alex Ekwueme, former vice-president, saying the institution later metamorphosed into the current Federal Polytechnic Oko, which had trained thousands of persons in disciplines.

Nwobodo, who was a teacher at the prestigious King’s College, Lagos, before becoming governor, recalled that he also established five other tertiary institutions, including a multi-campus university, because of his belief that education was key to the development of Eastern Nigeria then.

“My joy is that that mustard seed planted by Alex Ekwueme, has grown to become a place where several courses are being taught,” he said.

Presenting the award, the National President of the Federal Polytechnic Oko Alumni Association, Nze Henry Chukwukadibia, said the award was given to Senator Nwobodo for his outstanding leadership, commitment to service and passion for education, which he exhibited as the governor of old Anambra State by establishing schools and institutions of higher learning, most especially College of Arts, Science and Technology, Oko, which has metamorphosed to Federal Polytechnic Oko.

“We salute your education excellence built with the quality ofyour actions and the integrity of your intent, which has made our alma mater to become the Polytechnic of the Moment in Nigeria,” he said.

He said besides Nwobodo, other founding fathers were Alex Ekwueme, the initiator, former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, who made it a federal polytechnic and Mr. Ndu, the first principal of the institution, when it was College of Arts and Science.

Nwobodo defies pressures to return to Anglican Church

Overnor of the old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, yesterday repelled pressures to make him return to the Anglican Church.

Nwobodo, who was honoured by his former church, the Anglican Communion at Awkunanaw, said he would remain a Catholic because it was the church that came to his help in time of difficulty.

The occasion was the centenary celebration and thanksgiving of Christianity at St. Mathew Anglican Church of Amechi at Awkunanaw.

The former governor single-handedly built the church in 1982.

At the church service, which was conducted by the Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, Nwobodo was accompanied by a galaxy of Catholic priests, led by Monsignor John Amadi.

Archbishop Chukwuma told the congregation that by honouring the invitation to honour him, Nwobodo had finally returned to the Anglican Communion, which he left in 2015.

The cleric admonished the former governor to remember fact he single-handedly built the church and that his father, the late Pa Peter Nwobodo, was one of the pillars of the church.

He added: “Peter was one of the pillars of the church at Amechi and left it for his son, Jim. Jim took up the challenge and built the church single-handedly. His father, Peter, will be happy today in his grave as his son is back in the fold.

“You are a baptised and confirmed Anglican. These Catholic priests, who accompanied you to this occasion, should bid you bye because you are not going back to Catholic again with them.

“You should not be confused; don’t allow them to confuse you. We need you among us. I know all the time that you will be back, and you are back today.”

But Nwobodo told the congregation that his return to Anglican Church should be a matter for another day.

Nwobodo to APC: don’t cancel Anambra primaries

A Former Governor of old Anambra State Chief Nwobodo has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against cancelling the “transparent and credible” governorship primaries won by Mr Tony Nwoye.

Nwobodo, who was Chairman of Anambra Governorship Election Planning and Strategy Committee, said: “That election was transparent, free and fair and everybody saw  it on television from start to finish and hence no one should dare to nullify that election” Nwobodo said in a telephone interview with journalists.

The former Governor’s remark re-echoed his position which he made public the day the election result was announced by Governor Shettima on live television, August 27 in Awka, Anambra State. Nwobodo had in a widely circulated message he personally signed said he had monitored every process of the primary election and from his experience, the August 26 APC primaries was the most transparent in the history of Anambra State.

“I watched with keen interest the live transmission of the 2017 All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Primary for Anambra State, where Dr. Tony Nwoye was declared as the winner with a total of 2,146 votes.“I ?wish to congratulate the National Chairman and National Working Committee for making this possible. I also congratulate the Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, and his Committee for conducting a free, credible and rancour-free primary in the state, making it the first time any political party would conduct such a transparent and rancour free primary in the state.”

Nwobodo said: “I watched with keen interest the live transmission of the 2017 All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Primary for Anambra State, where Dr. Tony Nwoye was declared as the winner with a total of 2,146 votes.

“I congratulate Dr. Nwoye for the overwhelming mandate.  This is a victory for the APC and all the aspirants for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves at the primary.

“I wish to use this opportunity to remind all the aspirants of their commitment to support whoever emerges as the party flagbearer. And appeal to you to join Dr. Tony Nwoye and form a formidable campaign team that would secure victory for our party, the APC, in the forthcoming November, 2017, Governorship Election.

  • ‘We expect Nwobodo to conduct credible primary’

Dr. Chike Obidigbo is one of the governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State. In this interview with Nwanosike Onu, he speaks on the chances of his party in the election.

After your bitter experience in the last governorship election, what motivated you to come out to contest again?

I decided to enter into the governorship race of Anambra State again purely because I understand the present challenges of the state and I have sufficient imagination to capture the designs for the future prosperity and development of Anambra. I possess the intellectual capacity to build, consolidate and expand existing foundations. In Anambra State, we urgently need an economic renaissance that would allow private sector operators and leadership at all levels to contribute towards shaping the future of our economy. We must diversify, if we must create mass employment for our rising army of youths. This needed structural shift must be directed at Agriculture, Industrialization, and the development of critical infrastructure, all planned and executed with certain single mindedness.

Did you dump the APGA for the APC because of the betrayal you experienced?

No. You know what happened in the last election and the primaries. Before I was not into polities, I was drafted into the race for governorship by the former Governor, Peter Obi and he came from APGA. After that came all the endorsements from zones, groups, Local government areas to the Senatorial Zones, from all kinds of leaders and groups in the state. All of them gave me the support I needed.. At a point it was very obvious that I was going to be the candidate of APGA in that election. Even Willie Obiano knew that I was going to be the candidate of the party. So after all that happened, it became an opportunity to look at the political terrain to study what the Igbo nation needs. So after that study for almost one year I became satisfied that for Anambra State and the entire Igbo land must be part of the national discuss, we must key into the centre. APGA like you know is a one party state and decision making in APGA is simple so in that process, they make a lot of mistakes. After what happened to me then, it gave me the opportunity to look at the terrain clearly. It is the outcome of those months and years of retrospection that I was made to understand that for Anambra to operate satisfactorily and provide for our people, you must key in to the center. A national party has a broad think tank base. When you are with a party at the center with several other people, you are in the position to represent your people better. A party like the APC is one of them. When issues that have to do with getting the entire ethnic interests to brain storm on a way forward for their people, the PDP would enter into a caucus meeting, the APC would hold its caucus meetings, then, what will APGA do, maybe. look for the next beer parlor. In the best interest of Anambra State and other southeast states, they should align with the party at the center if not, we will continue to lose out. The Igbos, including Anambra people, must find a way to get proper representation and that informed my choice of the APC. As I speak now, if you give me APGA ticket free of charge I will not take it

People are clamoring for change. what do you think should be done for Anambra State to chart a new cause?

The truth is that today Anambra State is at a crossroads and the real problem is that we lack clear vision to address our mounting challenges. If we take a look at the rising rate of graduate unemployment in a state richly endowed with abundant human and material resources. For instance, it is certain that so much more need to be done in a creative dimension to steer the good, enterprising people of Anambra  State away from the quagmire. Indeed, we need a new leadership to drive the collective efforts of Anambra people to come up with solutions to our problems. We urgently need to deploy our energies in a positive direction. When we do that, it is possible to create new jobs on a massive scale out of the virgin economy. Anambra State would be well off when we can maximally explore and explain available resources for overall benefit of our people. I use this opportunity therefore to offer my service and to call on all responsible men and women with impeccable character to join hands in the rigorous pursuit of a socially acceptable and economically sustainable future. Interestingly, it is only together that we can make Anambra ‘The Light of The Nation’, shine again. There is no room for ineptitude or mediocrity. We must bear in mind that the change Anambra desires is to rebuild our society with a view to renewing our endearing value system.

Do you envisage any intrigue playing out during the APC governorship primary?

Today, we have the APC committee for Anambra State governorship election, which is headed by a former governor, Senator Chief Jim Nwobodo. I am pleased with the committee and it will help in achieving a level playing ground during the primaries. The caliber of those in the committee would also help in getting the South East key into the APC, which is the party at the centre in Nigeria. I am sure they will not want to soil their hands with corruption. They are people that have integrity. My ambition to become a governor is not a do or die matter and if at the end they say I am not the candidate, there will be no problem. If the committee gets it right in Anambra State which is the head of the Southeast, then, we are set for the rest of the zone.

    What is your political philosophy?

Democracy enunciates the basic ingredients of a truly civil society, where all citizens are equal as important stakeholders in the nation building process. Against this background, my driving philosophy in my career is that in whatever I do, my life must impact positively on the lives of others. One cardinal objective is to uphold the Rule of Law in order to achieve equal opportunity. This retrogressive style had been encouraged by Nigeria’s dubious electoral system before now. The one hundred and seventy nine towns of Anambra State have peculiar challenges which we hope to confront head on. Towards this end, the new government under my leadership plans to partner with them to tackle their problems in a bottom-up approach that has been the style of my Charity organisation “Osisioma Foundations” There is no doubt that  Anambra people are leaders and trail blazers in academia, commerce, business and industry. The government under my leadership would seek to provide a driving force to harness the innate potentials of our people especially the youths and women. Extreme individualism, our current bane does not augur well in the long run, for a developing society. So, we must develop some meeting points for social engagement and for enterprise.

If elected governor of Anambra State on November 18, what will be your action points?

Well, it is now eighteen years since Nigeria returned to the path of democratic rule and Anambra State would be going to the polls to elect its fifth civilian governor. Within the period spanning 1991 through 2017, Anmabra has witnessed four administrations. In the course of these administrations, efforts have been made to uplift the state through roads and other infrastructure. If given the opportunity to pilot the affairs of the state as Governor, the following shall therefore constitute my action points to take the state to another level. My effort will be geared towards institutional revitalization, human capital development and wealth/job creation. These are the areas we are lacking representation. Successive governments mostly concentrated on roads but we need these other areas to expand and grow our economy. The state’s economy should be first then; other areas will fall in naturally.

The stakeholders admitted dislodging the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will be tough but not impossible.

Nwobodo, who headed the committee that convened the meeting, told the stakeholders defeating an incumbent was a difficult task without adequate preparations.

He urged the APC chieftains to go to the battle field with a united house to guarantee victory.

According to Nwobodo: “We are going to sign a pact before the primaries that anybody that loses will help the winner to emerge as governor.

“But let me tell you that to remove an incumbent is not easy but we want to win the election and you should stop listening to rumours,” he said.

Ngige said: “Obiano is a master of propaganda and has plenty of money for the election. We are going into a war with him, but we must go into the war as a united front”

“A lot of things are at stake. Obiano’s government has been campaigning every day. If we fail this election, the entire South East has failed.

He went on: “You must see this election as a case of survival in the zone with Anambra as the flagship.

“We are taking over the Anambra State government house but it will be a long journey because we are going to war with the incumbent.”

Senators Wogu, Ararume and Agboti said Obiano has failed the state and must be defeated.

Nwobodo charges mates to beat Abia Warriors

Enugu Rangers’ midfielder, Obinna Nwobodo has charged his team mates to ensure that they go for the three points at stake in their Friday night NPFL Match Day 26 tie with Abia Warriors at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu to show that their goalless draw in Bauchi was no fluke.

The Flying Antelopes were at their imperious best last Sunday against Wikki Tourists in a tie dubbed battle of league frontrunners and after their draw at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Rangers will go top of the league at least for 48 hours if they beat the Umuahia side at home.

Nwobodo, a former Flying Eagles star, who was in the thick of action in Bauchi, told SportingLife that a good win over Abia Warriors will help Rangers draw closer to achieving their dream of winning the league title at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, the Media Officer of Rangers, Foster Chime has told SportingLife that the Enugu side went straight to camp immediately they returned from Bauchi and have begun intensive training ahead of the Friday tie.
