Anambra poll: Can Nwoye succeed Obiano?

In this piece, Dr Peter Ekweme states that the pedegree of the aspirants will determine how far they can go in the party primaries and the governorship election in Anambra State.

It is laughable that rivals could resort to the gutter to press against the front line governorship aspirant for the upcoming Anambra State gubernatorial election, Comrade Dr Tony Okey Nwoye. The online rant by one Aniagbaso is even more so.

In this era of social media, misfits sit in the dark corners of their dark rooms and from their disturbed dark minds spew forth unfounded lies which the undiscerning and unsuspecting can fall for, hence my decision to put down these clarifications for record purposes as a concerned citizen of Anambra State who has a duty of patriotism to tell the truth as he knows it.

Firstly, only the uninformed will consider that crap about Tony ever being linked to the horrible murder of Barrister Igwe and his wife. As at that time, young Tony was still far away from Anambra State politics. He was not even remotely involved. For such a high profile case, it is instructive that NEVER had Tony’s name ever been linked to that despicable crime. And he has run for the House of Representatives twice and was the governorship candidate of a major political party. Not once did this come up! The little matter of the confessant not being able to correctly name such a close buddy, consistently writing ‘Nwonye’ instead of ‘Nwoye’ readily gives the faceless con artist away for what he is – a very cheap scammer.

But the one that takes the cake in that incongruous litany of fables is the allegation that Tony Nwoye belonged to a cult group while in school. Nothing can be further from the truth. Tony Nwoye had his university education in University of Nigeria (both Nsukka and Enugu campuses), and Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. These are public institutions whose records the public can readily avail themselves of. Not for once was he ever accused from any quarters of belonging to a cult group. Not even the authorities he severally stood up against could trump up such charges against him.

The records of the universities’ security departments can readily be referred to and cross checked for this. Those at the helm of the schools he attended are all still alive and can be reached to get a clarification on Tony’s antecedents in school, even a characterisation of his persona. Tony NEVER was a member of any cult group! If anything, he deployed his time as a student leader both at the Enugu campus of UNN and much latter, at the national level (NANS) to campaign against cultism and campus violence. The records are there for those interested in truth and facts!

The other frivolities of kidnap, arson and their likes do not deserve any serious response. Anyone who knows Tony Nwoye can attest to the fact that his humaneness and innate detest for any form of oppression, repression and impugning on human dignity will never let him get involved in such acts. By his very nature, the Tony Nwoye I know so well simply cannot descend that low. I was in College of Medicine, University of Nigeria with Tony Nwoye at about the same time (I was a class ahead of him). We were active in the politics of University of Nigeria Medical Students Association (UNMSA). We were together in the Students Union Government House of Representatives. We even contested against each other for the Speakership of the SUG House of Representatives.

It is the stock in trade of dirty politics to try to impugn the character of adversaries but there is limit below which any self respecting politician should never descend. Fabrication of such wicked outright lies against an opponent this early in the contest will do the fabricator no good. The candidates should stick to issues, and there are many! We want to hear of their solutions to the myriads of problems confronting our dear state, Anambra. We want to hear of their strides in their former or present positions towards improving the lot of the common Anambra man. They may do well to provide us with verifiable accounts of their personal efforts in their personal capacities towards alleviating the suffering of private citizens of Anambra – the indigent, the unemployed, the widows, the orphans, downtrodden women and neglected children.

We want plans, initiatives, strategies and policy proposals; not poorly crafted lies,  baseless propaganda and cheap blackmails. That crap by the faceless Anagbaso belongs to the latter. Because it is incoherent, facts challenged and downright pedestrian, it is, as Shakespeare would say, nothing but *”a tale told by an idiot – full of sound and fury but signifying nothing.”*

It shall be well with Anambra State.

Indeed, it MUST be well with Anambra state.

  • Nwoye to APGA: Stop deceiving Anambra

Nwoye to APGA: Stop deceiving Anambra

Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State and member representing Anambra East and West Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Tony Nwoye, has said the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won elections in Anambra State through deceit.

He said the party used the name of the late Igbo icon, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, during elections.

Nwoye spoke in Nsugbe, Anambra East local government area, after revalidating his party membership card.

He said: he would seek the governorship ticket, despite coming from the same area with Governor Willie Obiano, adding that the governor had failed, not only the people of Anambra East council and Anambra North senatorial zone, but the entire state.

He said the governorship election would be different as the people have learnt their lessons in the hands of the APGA – led government.

Nwoye said before now, APGA had been using the name of  Ojukwu to deceive the people during elections, adding that the trick would not work again for the party.

He said: “The APC is not like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where everybody is confused, but this party is a focused one and well disciplined”

“If anybody tells you that there is problem in APC, tell them it is not true and the influx of politicians to the party will not bring such either, because the more the merrier”

“We want to bring change in Anambra to stop the APGA led government from the impunity being perpetrated on the local government allocations, APGA government has really siphoned council funds” Nwoye alleged.

But, the Chairman of APGA, Sir Norbert Obi, challenged the former chairman of the PDP to show evidence of his claim.

Obi said in Awka that the Obiano administration had shown prudence in managing resources, adding that his achievement within the short time was enough evidence.

However, Nwoye said that the registration  by the APC was not to target the state executive as being speculated, adding that every member of the APC was comfortable with the executive.

According to him, APC is a disciplined and focused party, what is happening in Anambra state now is a mass movement and that is why the party is bringing change to the people.

  • Nwoye, PDP members join APC in Anambra

A former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, Tony Nwoye, alongside other party chieftains, have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former PDP leaders met with APC’s executive members at the weekend in Awka, the state capital, on how to pursue the December, next year’s governorship election.

Nwoye joined APC with over 10,000 former PDP members, including lawmakers, commissioners, local government chairmen and councillors.

He said they joined APC because of unresolved litigations against the state’s PDP.

According to him, he and his supporters would not wait to drown with PDP’s sinking ship.

The weekend’s meeting, which lasted over one hour at APC’s secretariat, was also witnessed by some top members of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) near the venue.

One of the defectors, who spoke in confidence, said: “We are tired of PDP’s gimmicks. For over 16 years, this party has been swimming in crises. We can’t take it anymore.

“All we want to do now is to rally our leaders, like Prince Arthur Eze, Chief Cletus Ibeto, Chief Azudiaro Obiejesi (Obijackson), among others, to reposition APC in Anambra, nay Southeast.

“We know it is going to be a tough battle between APC and APGA in next year’s election in Anambra because Governor Willie Obiano is interested in second term and PDP is no longer a force in the state. Our party (APC) has all it takes to take the seat.”

  • Anambra PDP crisis: Nwoye, Oguebego suspended

    •‘Emeakayi remains suspended’

The crisis in the Anambra State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is escalating, with the Prince Ken Emeakayi faction suspending nine party chieftains.

A letter by the Assistant Publicity Secretary, Chief Emma Oguagu, said they were suspended for alleged anti-party activities.

Those suspended include: Comrade Tony Nwoye, Prince Osy Ezenwa, Ejike Oguebego, Chief Basil Ejidike, Chief Mrs. Jessy Balonwu, Mr. Kenneth Arinze, Uche Ogbonna, Chuks Okoye and Dr. Tony Akachukwu.

The letter reads: “Following allegations of anti-party activities levelled against them, the Anambra State working committee of the PDP, has, after preliminary hearings, in compliance with chapter 10, article 57 (3) of the 2012 constitution (as amended), suspended these members.

“The affected persons have been referred to the state disciplinary committee in line with the provisions of the constitution.”

But the party’s governorship candidate, Comrade Tony Nwoye, said Emeakayi and his group were singing  Olisa Metuh’s song.

Nwoye said: “Emeakayi was never elected chairman and has no power to suspend any member. From all indications, he has already suspended himself from the public glare by his activities with Olisa Metuh.

A factional leader Ejike Oguebego also dismissed the purported suspension. He maintained that Emeakayi, remained suspended.

Oguebego said he remained the authentic chairman of the party in the state, describing those behind the “purported suspension as jesters”.

“They do not have such powers. Emeakayi was suspended and he remains so,” he said.

Nwoye camp slams Metuh over comments

The November 16 Anambra governorship election fiasco has taken a new twist with the Tony Nwoye Campaign Organisation (TNCO) taking issues with  the ruling party over its comments on the election.

In a statement yesterday, the TNCO described statements by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh as arrant nonsense and an act of betrayal.

The statement was jointly signed by Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu, Mazi Okwu Okwu, Hon Ikechukwu Onyia and Mazi Orjika Chidi.

Metuh had, on Monday commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies for what he described as peaceful conduct of the poll. Metuh had also described the election as free and fair.

But Nwoye’s camp has raised questions over Metuh’s sense of judgment and his loyalty to the cause of the party’s governorship candidate.

The camp accused Metuh of working for the interest of Governor Peter Obi and the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) against the interest of the PDP candidate.

Nwoye said: “In a show of shame and in a disgraceful crescendo of delusional act and to please his contractors (APGA and Mr Peter Obi), Olisa Metuh made his statement giving credibility to an election in which his candidate and all his family members, including some of his cousins were disenfranchised and prevented from voting.

“An election in which two leaders of the party, Chief Arthur Eze and Chief Mrs Josephine

“Mr Olisa Metuh, we put it to you that you sabotaged PDP on the 16th of November, 2013 during the election, directing your family members to vote for APGA.

“That explains why PDP could not win in your ward at Otolo Nnewi.

“It is a shame that while other political parties like the APC, the Labour Party, the CNPP and others were calling for a total cancellation of the election, you were busy singing a different song. Who are you really working for? Which party do you actually belong to,PDP or APGA?.

  • All eyes on Anambra as Ngige, Obiano, Nwoye, feanyi Ubah test strength

All eyes on Anambra as Ngige, Obiano, Nwoye, feanyi Ubah test strength

Today is a decision day in Anambra State. It is a day to elect the man that will succeed Governor Peter Obi.

Today’s race is strictly a four-horse one. And they are the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Chris Ngige; All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Willie Obiano; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Comrade Tony Nwoye and Labour Party (LP), Chief Ifeanyi Ubah.

The fate of these four men would be decided by a total of 1, 784,536 registered voters. Of the lot, 900,701, representing 50.5%, are women, while 883,835, representing 49.5%, are men.

They are spread across 326 wards of the 21 local government areas of the state which prides itself on being “The Light of the Nation”.

After months of speculations, consultations and preparations which included vigorous campaigns across the local government areas, with seven being in each of the three senatorial districts – Anambra North, Anambra South and Anambra Central.

Obiano and Nwoye are from Anambra North, while Ngige and Ubah are from the Central and South respectively.

The four leading contenders in the governorship poll have one thing in common: incredible war chest! So, today’s election would, to some extent, be a fair fight.

The contest will be determined by many forces. First is the support base. While Nwoye is said to enjoy the support of Chief Arthur Eze and Chief Emeka Offor, Obiano enjoys the support of incumbent governor. Ngige has the strong support of the recently registered APC, an amalgam of four major opposition parties. Ubah, apart from self-financing, has many wealthy friends as supporters.

The candidates’ popularity will play a major factor. There is no doubt that they are all popular and have carved a niche for themselves in various aspects of life. The popular opinion here is that Ngige parades a larger than life image, having ruled the state once and made indelible marks in the areas of infrastructure.

Nwoye also has fierce followership, especially among the youths, who are calling for a generational shift. Obiano’s meritorious career, administrative acumen and the support from the ruling party have shot up his popularity. Ubah, an oil and gas magnate, has been made so popular by his kerosine sales to the people at an affordable price.

Then, there is the ubiquitous factor of religion. Here, religion is a highly emotive subject that every candidate has been careful not to be on the wrong side of it. That probably explains why the recent tragedy at the Adoration Ground was handled with much tact by all the candidates.

The zoning philosophy may not really be the deciding factor, as it is not very much mentioned here.

The legal tussles that raged on in the PDP which literally stalled good planning and campaign will sorely hurt the party, federal might notwithstanding.

While Obiano and Nwoye would be splitting the votes of Anambra North, Ngige, analysts believe, would face no resistance in Anambra Central. He is quite popular and is expected to garner substantial votes there.

The South Senatorial Zone will act as the swing zone in today’s election. In all, the winner in todays election will the most popular candidate among the people of Anambra State.

Sambo assures of free, fair Anambra polls

Vice-President Namadi Sambo on Saturday in Awka said the November 16 gubernatorial election in Anambra would be free and fair to all.

Sambo said this when he formally declared open the campaign of Mr. Tony Nwoye, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

He declared that the election would be a “one man, one vote, one woman one vote, one youth one vote’’ exercise.

“The Federal Government is committed towards making the November 16 election a free and fair exercise,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the vice-president as saying at the forum.

Sambo commended PDP’s choice of Nwoye and his running-mate, Dr. Amamchukwu Ezike, for the election.

He said their (Nwoye and Ezike) administration would enjoy the support of the President Goodluck Jonathan-led federal government when elected.

The party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, later presented the PDP flag to Nwoye and Ezike as the party’s governorship and deputy governorship candidates respectively.

In his speech shortly before the presentation, he urged members of the party in the state to join hands to enable the PDP wins the election.

Tukur said Anambra people had given the state to the PDP at the inception of the current democratic era and urged the people of the state to return the state to the party.

  • Nwoye opens campaign Saturday

    •PDP candidate visits monarchs

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Comrade Tony Nwoye, will begin his campaign on Saturday at the Holy Trinity ground, Onitsha.

Nwoye, who was affirmed the authentic candidate of the party by the Supreme Court on Monday, has started visiting traditional rulers to get their blessings.

Yesterday, he was at the palace of the monarch of Obosi, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, who assured him of his support.

The PDP train was also at Idemili North and South local governments to woo the electorate. These are areas believed to be strongholds of the All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s), standard-bearer, Senator Chris Ngige.

It is expected that President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-President Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark and the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, will lead other PDP chieftains to Anambra State for Saturday’s rally.

PDP bigwigs, who spoke with The Nation yesterday in Awka, said despite the delay following the court processes, everything was set for the rally.

Nwoye told The Nation yesterday that he was not bothered about the lateness in starting his campaign since he had the support of Anambra people.

He said: “We are going into the November 16 election fully prepared. This is the only time PDP has prepared well for an election in this state and we are ready to show the people that Anambra belongs to PDP.

“I thank the people for their solidarity since the struggle began. I urge them to show same love during the poll.

    I pray
