The decision was taken during the Council’s annual meeting where members reviewed activities for 2025 and outlined programmes and advocacy priorities for 2026.

According to the NYCN, the honour was unanimously approved in recognition of Idris’s leadership in strengthening nuclear safety, radiation protection, and regulatory governance in Nigeria.

Confirming the decision, Amb. Benjamin Adekunle Onileowo, National Publicity Secretary of the NYCN, said the award was a reflection of the Council’s desire to recognise public officials whose work has had tangible impact on national safety and institutional credibility.

“The Council resolved at its annual review session to honour Dr. Ya’u Usman Idris for his outstanding leadership of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority. According to the NYCN, the “Man of the Year” honour is reserved for individuals whose leadership demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and commitment to long-term national development, particularly in sectors critical to public safety.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ekiti Chapter, has vowed to embark on a mass protest at the main campus of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), on Monday November 3, 2025 over allegations of abuse of office against the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina.

Announcing this in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the chapter and General Secretary, Comrades Segun Bankole and Silas Olawale respectfully, NYCN said its Ekiti office would be temporarily relocated to the main campus of FUOYE to prosecute the protest until the demands of young people in the State are met.

The Youth Council said the Monday protest is coming after exhausting all official channels, noting that NYCN Ekiti Chapter had submitted a detailed petition to the Presidency, relevant ministries, and national anti-corruption and security agencies, exposing the “corruption and moral decay threatening Federal University Oye-Ekiti”.

NYCN in the statement insisted on its demands for non-negotiable suspension of Prof. Fasina and removal of Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) as Council Chairman.

The Council also called for an independent investigation of all sexual abuse cases and prosecution of offenders, suspension of the current Vice Chancellorship selection process and forensic audit of FUOYE finances since 2021 as well as restoration of lawful governance and protection for whistleblowers.

“This peaceful protest is to show President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as visitor to FUOYE, that Nigerian youth will not tolerate corruption, moral decay, or injustice in our institutions,” NYCN added.

Parts of the statement read: “We have waited long enough. The time for action is now. Effective Monday, 3rd November 2025, NYCN Ekiti will relocate its operational headquarters to FUOYE Main Campus.

“We will remain there in peaceful mass protest until our demands are met. We call on all Nigerian youth, students, and civil society groups to join us to end impunity and restore integrity in FUOYE.”

Sowore’s agenda threat to national stability – NYCN

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Kaduna Chapter, has warned that the agenda of activist Omoyele Sowore poses a threat to national stability, urging youths to resist attempts by what it described as “conflict entrepreneurs” to lure them into disruptive protests.

The Council was reacting to reports of a planned nationwide demonstration tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow allegedly being coordinated by Sowore in connection with the U.S. Embassy’s recent security advisory.

In a statement by its Chairman, Comrade Umar Abubakar, the NYCN said while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, any action that endangers public peace or national unity must be firmly rejected by patriotic youths.

According to the Council, the growing trend of using activism as a tool for political agitation and incitement is dangerous, warning that such actions only deepen divisions and distract the country from addressing real developmental challenges.

“We must resist those who thrive on chaos and disunity. Nigerian youths should not be used as instruments by conflict entrepreneurs whose only goal is to destabilize the nation,” the statement said.

The Kaduna NYCN described Sowore’s posture as reckless and unpatriotic, accusing him of exploiting the nation’s democratic space for personal and political relevance. “Leadership is about responsibility and nation-building, not about fueling disorder or seeking attention through disruption,” the Council added.

The youth body further cautioned against ridiculing or discrediting national leaders under the guise of activism, insisting that constructive engagement, not confrontation, remains the most effective path to reform.

It also lauded the Kaduna Commissioner for Youth Development for consistent engagement with youth bodies across the state, describing such collaboration as key to sustaining peace and progress.

The statement urged all Nigerian youths to remain law-abiding, innovative, and focused on contributing positively to national development, emphasizing that true patriotism lies in building the nation, not tearing it apart.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and its Registrar-General (RG) Hussaini Ishaq Magaji (SAN) to maintain status quo in a suit before it over the purported withdrawal of the Certificate of Incorporated Trustees of the National Youth Council of Nigeria and appointment of Interim Management Committee of NYCN by the Commission.

The Court presided over by Justice Binta Nyako also ordered the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Minister for Youth Development who were listed as defendants in the suit to also maintain status quo in the matter.

The order is pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction sought by the NYCN.

The Incorporated Trustees of NYCN Amb. Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, President of NYCN and Secretary of Board of Trustees, had approached the Federal High Court Abuja as claimants and applicants seeking an interim injunction.

JUST IN: Youths protest CAC’s deregistration of NYCN

Over 3,000 members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) on Thursday staged a protest at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) headquarters in Abuja over the Commission’s decision to withdraw the Council’s registration.

Addressing journalists during the protest, NYCN Secretary General, Barrister Abubakar Suleiman, accused the CAC Registrar General, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji (SAN), of acting “unlawfully and working against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda”.

Suleiman said the deregistration violated a subsisting court process, as the NYCN had a pending appeal challenging CAC’s powers to delist the organisation.

“We had won at the Federal High Court, which ruled that CAC has no authority to delist the Youth Council. Yet, despite a pending appeal, the Registrar General went ahead to remove our name and set up a committee to manage NYCN affairs,” he said.

The protesters, chanting solidarity songs, demanded the immediate reinstatement of the Council’s certificate and called for Magaji’s dismissal.

Suleiman said the protest, which would continue for 30 days, would be replicated across CAC offices nationwide until their demands are met.

He further alleged irregularities within the Commission, including unlawful recruitments and administrative impunity, describing the action as “a sabotage of President Tinubu’s youth development vision.”

NYCN presidential aspirants sign peace accord ahead of national congress

Five aspirants contesting for the position of President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) have signed a Peace Accord, pledging to accept the outcome of the forthcoming election.

The accord, signed on Monday at the Ministry of Youth Development in Abuja, is aimed at fostering harmony and ensuring a peaceful atmosphere during the NYCN national elective congress, scheduled for October 5–8, 2025, in Abuja.

Chairman of the NYCN National Transition Committee (NTC), Prince Gbenga Adedamola, who announced a progress report at the ceremony, said the committee has been working closely with the Congress Planning and Electoral Committees to guarantee a credible process.

He noted that the congress, themed “Redemption Congress: Repositioning the Youth Council for Greatness,” marks a fresh chapter in NYCN’s history, following the dissolution of two factional executive councils earlier in August 2025.

The aspirants expressed confidence in the process and reaffirmed their commitment to the unity and progress of the organization.

“This Congress aims to reposition the NYCN for greater impact and effectiveness in advocating for youth development in Nigeria,” Adedamola said.

He further explained that the NTC has secured a convenient location in Abuja for the national congress, with adequate security arrangements in place to ensure a smooth and successful event.

“This development marks a significant milestone in the organisation’s efforts to promote youth development and empowerment in Nigeria.

“The NYCN leadership expresses heartfelt gratitude to State Chapters and Voluntary Youth Organisations for their unwavering support and dedication, past leaders and stakeholders for their invaluable contributions and guidance, and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development for its supervisory role in ensuring transparency and accountability.

“These efforts underscore the NYCN’s commitment to promoting youth development and empowerment in Nigeria,” he added.

NYCN seeks funding support for NNRA to strengthen nuclear safety

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has asked the federal government to increase funding for the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) to strengthen nuclear safety.

The council urged the government to “match commitment with resources” to ensure Nigeria’s nuclear safety architecture remains strong, credible, and globally respected.

National Vice President (North Central) of NYCN, Ambassador Akoshile Mukhtar, made the appeal in a statement on behalf of youth stakeholders and civil society advocates on Tuesday in Abuja.

The council urged the Federal Government and the National Assembly to prioritise budgetary allocation to the NNRA to safeguard public health, environmental safety, and national energy security.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Amb. Mukhtar commended the DG of the NNRA for his steadfast commitment to global best practices in nuclear regulation, radiation protection, and energy oversight.

He stressed that the NNRA plays a pivotal role in protecting Nigerians from harmful radiation exposure, ensuring the safe application of nuclear technology, and boosting investor confidence in Nigeria’s energy and industrial sectors.

“The NNRA under its present leadership has not only upheld Nigeria’s international obligations but has equally positioned the country as a responsible player in nuclear safety across Africa. This is the kind of leadership Nigeria needs to safeguard lives, protect our environment, and guarantee energy sustainability,” Amb. Mukhtar said.

He noted that chronic underfunding of the NNRA remains a critical challenge, as the agency is responsible for overseeing radiation safety in sensitive areas, including healthcare, oil and gas, agriculture, industrial applications, defence operations, and the emerging nuclear energy sector.

“We are mobilising Nigerian youths and civil society to advocate for stronger support to the NNRA. Funding nuclear safety is not optional; it is essential. A well-resourced NNRA translates to a safer Nigeria, improved compliance with global standards, and greater investor trust,” he added.

He urged policymakers to recognise the NNRA as a silent but strategic guardian of public safety and national development.

…launches free digital artisans training to mark 2025 World Youth Skill Day

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has revealed that 43% of youths in Osun State lack access to decent jobs, while 36% struggle to secure capital for business startups — a situation it says is negatively impacting the state’s economy.

To mark the 2025 World Youth Skills Day, the council launched a free digital and artisan training scheme aimed at reducing unemployment and empowering young people across the state.

Speaking at a press briefing in Osogbo on Monday, the Director of Employment and Job Creation at NYCN, Enoch Ogunsanya, said the council is set to partner with the Osun State Government to provide practical skills and entrepreneurship support for the youth.

He lamented the rising rate of youth unemployment, underemployment, and limited access to vocational and digital opportunities in the state, describing it as a challenge common to many parts of Nigeria.

“Many of our young people are willing to work, to learn, and to contribute meaningfully to the economy, but they lack access to training, funding, information, and support systems,” Ogunsanya stated.

He said the council’s intervention is a step toward building a more inclusive, skilled, and economically productive youth population in Osun.

“A survey we conducted under this Directorate revealed that 43% of youth lack access to decent jobs, 36% struggle due to capital and business support gaps and youths in rural areas, artisans, and even students in higher institutions are neglected in empowerment drives.”

He urged youths to embrace digital literacy and modern skill sets like data analysis, cybersecurity, and tech innovation.

However, he said that the council said, “We have begun implementing strategic initiatives aimed at empowering youth across Osun State by launching digital skill, artisan-focused training for free for youths and partnership with organisations for more inclusiveness and data-backed solutions.”

He tasked youths to join the NYCN drive in tackling unemployment in Osun State, adding that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration is ever ready to tackle unemployment.
