FCT Minister commends Tamuno over completion of Kugbo Market

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commended the Group Managing Director/CEO of Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), Amb. Maureen Tamuno, for successfully completing Phase 1 of the Kugbo International Market in Abuja.

Speaking during an inspection of the first phase of the market during the week  in Abuja, Wike emphasised that the market will not only enhance economic activities but also attract both local and international investments into the FCT, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

The minister highlighted the importance of encouraging investment in international markets.

He expressed concern over encroachments and substandard structures and directed the development control team to immediately demolish any illegal structures obstructing road corridors around the market area.

He urged contractors to channel more funds to ensure the full realization of the market project. “I asked the contractors when they expect the entire project to be completed, and they reassured me that by January 2025, it will be finished. Once the first phase is completed, we will open it for traders currently operating on the roadside to move into the new market and expand their businesses,” he said.

He also stressed the need to support traders, saying, “We will do everything possible to assist our people, especially those who have not yet shown interest in the market. We will help them through empowerment programs under the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The minister added that the government would provide additional support to ensure smooth relocation to the market, expressing satisfaction with the progress made so far.

Meanwhile,  Tamuno revealed that Phase 1 of the market covers approximately eight hectares, with an additional 4.8 hectares still to be developed.

She stated that the Kugbo International Market will address congestion issues experienced in roadside markets around Abuja and will feature about 5,312 shops with solid infrastructure and well-constructed road networks.

Tamuno emphasised, “This market will play a significant role in stimulating economic growth by attracting traders from across Africa and Nigeria. It will create job opportunities for Nigerians and con

Wike decries outrageous quotations by contractors in FCT

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, yesterday  expressed concern over what he described as the high cost of construction in Abuja.

Wike said this when he visited the Zeberced Limited Quarry, the biggest Quarry in West Africa, located in the Kubwa District of Abuja.

The FCT minister stated that the visit was at the invitation of the Managing DIrector of Zeberced Group, Ayden Adil Kurt to see the activities at the quarry.

Wike, who was impressed with the humongous scale of industrial activities at the quarry, including the production of gravel, stone dust and asphalt amongst others, commended the company for its efforts and commitment to the project.

The minister who also  said he was encouraged by the activities at the quarry wondered why contractors still quoted exorbitant costs for construction projects in the FCT seeing as the essential raw materials were readily available at the quarry.

    0.00 / 0.00

He said: “The Managing Director has always invited me to come to see what they are doing at the factory which is the biggest quarry in West Africa. I’ve taken the opportunity to look at the environment and see what they are doing.

“That shows that ordinarily, the cost of construction ought not to be very expensive, particularly in the FCT. Apart from the equipment that are being imported that are used for this quarry, the raw material is available here and I wonder why contractors will be talking about cost of aggregate as if these are imported. They are not imported. They are made here.

“So, I really want to encourage this company. It’s really amazing that we have this type of manufacturing going on here and from what the MD said, they have over 800 residents who are working directly here”.

The minister who also expressed concerns over the environmental impact of the quarry, however, said he had been reassured by the Managing Director that the environmental impact assessment has shown that the company had adhered to the approved standard.

Wike further thanked the Zeberced Group for its decision to expand the access road to the Abuja Industrial Park, which is also being undertaken by the company at the Idu Industrial District and assured of continued support of the government.

He said: “This is the same company that is trying to carry out an Industrial Park at Idu and which we are going to give all the necessary support.

“As of yesterday, I’ve sent out a letter to the Ministry of Finance on the tax credit to enable them to carry out the other one-way carriage to make it a double carriage, which is being done by Salini Construction Company.

Earlier in his remark, the Managing Director, Zeberced Group, Ayden Adil Kurt, said the stone quarry has a production capacity of 3000 tons per hour.

Wike threatens to unseat Abuja federal lawmaker in 2027

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has threatened to unseat the lawmaker representing the nation’s capital in the National Assembly for criticising his achievements.

Wike, who joined issues with the federal lawmaker yesterday during the kick-off of the construction of Mabushi Bus Terminal (Phase I), in Abuja, did not name the particular lawmaker.

But the minister claimed to have overheard a lawmaker in the National Assembly on Arise TV in the morning, castigating the successes being recorded in the FCT.

Labour Party (LP) Senator Ireti Kingibe, who featured on the television programme, claimed, among other things, that she was being sidelined in the running of the FCT.

But the minister took exception to the lawmaker’s criticism of what she called the rot in schools and the absence of quality hospitals in the territory.

Wike said: “You, as a legislator, what have you done?  How many bills have you sponsored for us to improve our education and health sector?

“I challenge that legislator. If you are very popular, in 2027 come and run under Abuja, we will fail you. Do you think that what happened last time will happen again? It will not happen again.

“Luckily for me, I am the FCT minister now. So, that is my territory and I’m not afraid. With all due respect, what you don’t know, you don’t know, what you know you know.

“The good thing for you is to tell people you don’t know when you don’t know, then people will educate you. The Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud and my humble self, have not been in office for more than 11 months and the person is angry that people are praising us.

“If we have done well; we have done well. If we haven’t done well; we haven’t done well. I’m proud to say that in the short time that President Tinubu has appointed us, we have done well.”

The minister told the ‘unidentified lawmaker’ to brace for more accolades next year, adding: “This is because the praises you would see would be too much.”

Sen. Kingibe had complained of being sidelined in the running of the FCT, claiming that her constituency was being marginalised and that there was no clean water for the residents of Abuja.

She also claimed the roads being constructed across the FCT were not addressing the needs of the majority of the people, namely healthcare, water, education and security.

  • The Nyesom Wike magic wand

    The Nyesom Wike magic wand

Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (CON) is in a league of his own. He was called ‘Mr Project’ during his time as the No 1 citizen of the tate. While many thought he would relent in his new position as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wike is showing them that his best is yet to come as he is working tirelessly to bring about the needed change that will rewrite the history of the FCT in terms of infrastructural development not minding whose ox is gored.

Wike has shown dedication, resilience and the will to ensure great things are achieved in the FCT.

When he was appointed, Wike quickly hit the ground running after understudying the terrain to know the mode of operation. While many thought it would be business as usual, Wike put everyone on their toes which made him gather more enemies – those who liked to do things the conventional way.

He read the riot act to many who are trying to sabotage his efforts while telling everyone to align with his vision to bring about change soon, utilising available resource.

While many were busy playing politics and some were sponsoring media campaigns to soil his good name, Wike refused to budge instead he has concentrated on working fervently in the areas of security, health, environment, civil service restructuring, infrastructural development, and investment, among others.

When many of his ministerial peers were struggling to get the job done, Wike started flagging off projects and inaugurating new ones. He has continued in his stride, forcing many to catch up with his pace of work.

In his efforts in transforming the FCT, he did not abandon the rural areas. Also, he has reverted to the old template where things were done accordingly, bulldozing illegal buildings altering the master plan of the nation’s capital.

As Mr President is planning to mark his one year in office with a nine-day series of activities, Wike has also planned to inaugurate some projects which were abandoned by the previous administration and some he started and finished.

From May 27, the commercialisation of the Abuja Metro Line will commence, and the Vice President’s quarters will be inaugurated for use.

  • Rivers crisis: Worgu, Abe defend Wike’s integrity

Rivers crisis: Worgu, Abe defend Wike’s integrity

Two former senators – Magnus Abe and Olaka Worgu -yesterday rose in defence of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike over allegations of impropriety levelled against him as former governor of Rivers State.

The duo, who cautioned Governor Siminalayi Fubara against mudslinging, vouched for Wike’s integrity, saying that he served the state with utmost patriotism.

Abe, a former Secretary to the Government of Rivers State and Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in last year’s election, frowned at the allegations. Worgu said Fubara was trying to demonise his benefactor.

As the crisis escalated yesterday, five commissioners resigned from Fubara’s government.

Abe reflected on the Rivers crisis during his meeting key leaders and grassroots coordinators of his support groups in Port Harcourt, the state capital, where he also spoke on his decision to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Worgu, who also spoke in Port Harcourt, said Fubara was indulging in propaganda against Wike, who has acquired national and global reputation as a performer.

He said calling Wike names would not erase the minister’s records that had already been etched in the hearts of people.

Worgu rejected Fubara’s allegation that his administration was overburdened by the debts incurred from Wike’s unpaid projects.

He reminded Fubara that Wike’s outstanding performance made the Federal Government controlled by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to give him an award as the best governor in infrastructural development.

Worgu recalled that Wike inherited projects from his predecessor, completed and paid for them, adding that he also initiated and paid for most of his projects.

He said: “Honestly, we have become the laughing stock of Nigerians with all these allegations. We all know there is a rift between Governor Fubara and the former governor, now Minister Wike. What we are seeing is propaganda.

“Wike was a performer. We know that Wike paid for most of the projects he inherited from his predecessor. He also paid for the ones that he awarded. He set a record in governance and in Nigeria earning an award from the then APC Federal Government of President Muhammadu Buhari as the best performing governor in infrastructure in the entire country.

“Wike did not only pay the debts of his predecessors, he also did many projects more than any governor had ever done in our state.  Assuming but not conceding that he left debts, is government not a continuum?”

Worgu argued that Wike only paid for most of his completed projects, adding that he could not have paid contractors, who failed to finish their jobs.

He said: “Wike paid by milestones. He could not pay for jobs that were not done. Some of these jobs were not completed at the time of his exit from power.

“Why should he pay the contractors that have not finished their jobs just because he was leaving? That would have been bad business for the state. He was a prudent governor. It behooves on the new governor to complete the projects and pay the contractors their outstanding debts.

“The important thing is whether the state got value for money. Everybody agrees to that. Wike was a tough governor who insisted that the state got value for money from contractors. Calling people rats and using uncouth words do not impress anybody”.

Worgu said the people of Rivers will judge Fubara, not based on how he has been fighting Wike, but on his performance as his successor.

He said that rather than dissipate his energy on a futile attempt at bringing Wike down, he should focus on how to outperform him in office.

Worgu asked Fubara to examine his conscience and see whether what he was trying to do to Wike was the best way of paying him back for making him governor.

He said: “We believe that what the government should do is to challenge the records of Wike by working hard, building hard so that people will appraise them better. But this is not happening. Many people believe that we have lost a year by fighting and picking on Wike.

“This is the wrong way to go. Our dream has always been that successor governors will build on Wike’s legacies and do more than he did. Inciting the mob to lynch Wike who is the hero of our state will not be the right thing.

“Wike trusted the current governor a lot and ensured that he emerged governor. Is mudslinging the man, demonising and castigating him the way to pay back?

“I urge the governor to focus on his job and focus on delivering what he promised the people, not to put all the efforts of the government on fighting a person who did him good.

“Rivers people will judge him not on amount of insults he heaped on Wike. You cannot change the records. We all witnessed it. What we saw Wike do is etched in our hearts and you cannot just wipe it away by just calling him names.

“The unprecedented development Wike did in Rivers is replicating in Abuja. Go to Abuja and see what Wike has done.  We will keep lagging behind if we put all our efforts denigrating Wike. We can speak on issues by having healthy competition.”

Abe to Fubara: don’t malign Wike

Abe clarified that contrary to the misconception in various quarters that Wike came from the back to displace him (Abe) as a key supporters of Tinubu, he was a party to how the former governor became closer to the president.

Abe said: “I want to correct one misconception. The then governor of Rivers State, now FCT minister, is my friend. I did everything to facilitate his becoming a part of the Tinubu campaign because I knew his presence with us will make a substantial difference and will help us to win.

“It is not true that Wike came and pushed me aside. No, that is not true. We had a disagreement, but I will not give the detail of that disagreement, because it is not political to do so. But he did not just push me aside. We had a disagreement.

“Wike did not steal anything that belonged to us. He did not deceive us to take anything from us. I want to use this opportunity to appeal to all of you who have any misgivings about what is happening in the party or to us here as Tinubu people to let it go.”

Noting that election is over, he said his supporters should team up with the APC caretaker committee chaired by Chief Tony Okocha.

    Five commissioners quit

Five commissioners loyal to Wike yesterday resigned their positions from the State Executive Council (EXCO).

They left, following Fubara’s allegations against Wike and decision to probe his administration.

The commissioners, who quit are: Dr. Gift Worlu (Housing); Austin Ben Chioma (Environment); Prof. Chinedu Mmom (Education); Mr. Jacobson Nbina (Transportation) and Mrs. Inime Aguma (Social Welfare).

In his resignation letter dated yesterday, Mmom said he could no longer cope with his current work environment, describing it as toxic and unfavourable.

He said: “I write to formally tender my resignation as a member of the Rivers State Executive Council as the Honourable Commissioner for Education with effect from today the 15th day of May, 2024.

“It is a truism that a calm, safe and friendly environment would stimulate efficient service delivery and enhanced productivity. It is however unfortunate to note that my current work space has become toxic and no longer guarantees a favourable environment to enable me realise my set targets for the Education sector in the state.

“There is loss of trust, animosity and sharp division among colleagues in the same cabinet which is unhealthy and very unfortunate. I want to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity to serve in your cabinet and wish your administration well.

Ben-chioma cited the political crisis as the reason for his resignation.

He said: “I hereby tender my resignation as the Hon. Commission for Environment, Rivers State on this day the 15th May, 2024.

“I want to sincerely appreciate Your Excellency, for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the State Executive Council. My decision to resign is due to the political crisis befalling our dear Rivers State and other personal reasons.

“It was a privilege to have been of service to you in your administration and wish you all the best in your tenure.”

Worlu also hinged his decision on the unfavourable working environment, saying there was an attempt to fuse the executive with the legislature.

He said: “it is one of the most difficult decisions in my life. Yet, it is precipitated by the toxic atmosphere that has characterised our working relationship, especially the smouldering arbitrariness of decisions and actions, including the attempt to fuse the executive and the legislative in Rivers State.

“I thank you for the opportunity to serve in your government and I wish you the best as you continue to steer the ship of state. Kindly accept the assurance of my esteemed regards.”

Aguma said: “I resign with all sense of responsibility as there is no room for progressional development in the workplace.”

Nbina thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention to restore peace in Rivers, but said he decided to leave due to the unresolved crisis.

    Kukah sues for peace

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah expressed hope that Fubara and Wike will fix their problems.

He said ordinary people are worried by the crisis, politicians always have a way of settling themselves.

Kukah said: “This is politics. I’m very hopeful. We ordinary people cry more than the bereaved. The important thing is that politicians will fix their problems.

“Rivers State is a place that is very dear to me because I have been associating with them for a very long time. But, look, when politicians fight, don’t get carried away because they have their capacity to fix their quarrels.

“I hope and pray that Rivers State will sooner than later reposition itself because it is not an insignificant part of Nigeria.”

We will deal squarely with land grabbers – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the FCT Administration will deal squarely with land grabbers, no matter how highly- placed.

Wike gave the warning when officials of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), FCT Chapter, visited him in Abuja on Thursday.

“Land grabbing is not new. Some of your people are part of it, some staff of FCT are part of it.

“As a government, we will do all we can to see that we deal squarely with anybody that is involved, no matter how highly- placed he or she might be.

“It is  a terrible situation we found ourselves in. People grabbing land; people illegally acquiring land, just for the purpose of becoming rich overnight,” the minister said.

He pointed out that everyday ,people write  the FCTA, demanding for land allocation to develop a certain number of houses in the city.

He, however, said that many people were doing that just to obtain a land title and at the end of the day, nothing was developed.

“They will do all they can; take our land and sell it to people for development.

“For me, that is not helping us to reduce the housing deficit, no. That is just a way of taking government land and enriching yourselves at the expense of the government,” he said.

The minister added, “Yes government cannot sell land, so why will the government give out land for the purpose of housing estate and then you are selling the land?

“The government can as well sell the land itself if that is the case.”

Wike said that to address the challenge, the FCTA had decided that developers must show financial capacity before a land would be allocated to them in FCT.

He added that a reputable commercial bank must also write an undertaking that the developer has the financial capacity for such development.

“Two, you will write an undertaking that the project will commence and be completed within a specified time without any condition attached to it.

“Three, that failure to develop the land, the government is entitled to take back its land.It does not matter what form of development you are putting there.

“If that is done, then we will be convinced and give you our land allocation with proper documentation,” he said.

He said that the  measures were necessary to ensure that developers do not steal from the government in the name of development.

The minister said that there were currently over 1000 litigations in different courts over land matters, with kore being recorded on daily basis.

The minister also berated real estate developers for not meeting up to their obligations to the government, particularly in the payment of taxes relating to land.

“Even when you sell your properties, you don’t remit part of which belongs to the government.

“So, I want to partner with you but on good faith, not partnership that one party would be detrimental to the other, no. It has to be mutual and symbiotic,” Wike said.

Earlier, REDAN Chairman, Dr Ehikioya Okoruwa, assured Wike of the association’s readiness to partner the FCTA to bridge housing deficits in the territory.

Okoruwa said that to that end, the association planned to build 15,000 houses.

He further said that REDAN would invest N262 billion in the housing sector, adding that the FCTA would gain a lot  if they supported the project.

Okoruwa  said that REDAN was working with security agencies to address land racketeering, emphasising the association’s commitment to ethical practices and accountability.

“This meeting sets the stage for a potential partnership between the FCT Administration and REDAN, but with clear terms and expectations for accountability and transparency,” he said.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday said the Petroleum Industry Reform Act (2021), has opened the door to greater investment, innovation, and job opportunities in Nigeria.

The Minister also said the Act represents a watershed moment in the nation’s history, stressing that with its passage, the country has laid the groundwork for a more transparent, efficient, and competitive petroleum industry.

Wike stated this at a two-day retreat, organised by Members of the House of Representatives on Economic Transformation and Development Towards Effective Implementation of the Petroleum Industry Reform Act (2021) and Tax Reforms/Modernisation, held in Abuja.

The Minister who was represented by the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, noted that the true impact of the Act would be realized through effective implementation.

“We must work tirelessly to foster an enabling environment for investment, promote local content participation, and uphold the highest standards of governance and accountability in the petroleum industry”.

While noting that the imperative of tax reform and modernization could not be overstated, the nation’s tax system must evolve to reflect the dynamic nature of the economy and the realities of the 21st century.

Wike: some people deserve Guinness Book of Records as pretenders

    • Tinubu heading in right direction, says Shettima

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has said some people are so pretentious that they deserve to make the Guinness Book of World Records for this feat.

Wike spoke at the weekend during the 60th birthday celebration of the National Chairman (Southsouth) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Victor Giadom, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

During the event, which attracted leaders across party lines, the minister said Victor was not among such pretenders.

But the former Rivers State governor did not reveal the identities of the pretenders whom he described as snakes.

He said: “Even though we were of different parties, Victor had never gone on television to abuse any of his friends. He doesn’t allow politics to be a wedge between him and his friends. He plays politics and still remains with you.

“Victor is someone who will tell you he will be with you, and he will be with you. Victor is not a pretender. He is not one of those who have made the Guinness Book of Records as pretenders. There are those who have made the Guinness Book of Records by pretending. Nobody knew that they were snakes.

“Victor could tell you: ‘I will not do this’, and he will not do it. He will tell you: ‘I will do this’, and he will do it. I know his children and his wife.

“He has been my good friend, and I like to associate with people who remember tomorrow. I like those who will not forget when things were not good to them. Victor is not somebody who gives excuses.”

Wike recalled that he had known Victor as a grateful person since he (Wike) was Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.

“He left us and went to the other side. Unfortunately for him, since he left us, he had not won any election again. It is on record since 2015. Victor had not won any election. But because he came to us again in 2023, he now won an election. Victor remembers his friends. I thank God Almighty for what he has done for his family,” he said.

Wike stressed that he remained a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though the lawmakers in the state had joined the APC.

Vice President Kassim Shettima, who was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Agribusiness and Productivity Enhancement in the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Kingsley Uzoma, hailed Wike and other personalities who had worked in Rivers State for working for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in last year’s general election.

Acknowledging the hardship in the land, Shettima urged fellow citizens to exercise a little more patience.

The Vice President insisted that President Tinubu was moving in the right direction.

He said: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is today the President of the country. We are quite happy for the support we got from here. It is true that times are difficult everywhere. But I appeal that we have a little patience because for the first time Nigeria is actually challenging the problems.

“Nigeria has been mismanaged for quite a while. It is time to make it right. It is true that there had to be sacrifice for anything that is going to be good. Inflation that is biting the world round is not just in Nigeria.

“What is happening is a call to service. We need to raise our productivity and the moment we do our nation will be respected. I assure you that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going in the right direction and will deliver all his promises.”

Other dignitaries at the event included APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje; the party’s national and state leadership; Cross River State Governor Bassey Edet Otu; Minister of Petroleum (Oil) Senator Heineken Lokpobiri; Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker Martinn Amaewhule; other lawmakers, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and traditional rulers.

He said: “The security in the city had significantly improved and safe for everybody, including foreigners, to carry out their businesses without fear.

“We are happy to make sure all the foreigners are free to carry out their businesses.

“Abuja is the capital, and you can see how safe it is. It is one of the lovely cities that everybody will want to visit”.

He explained that the partnership would enable the Administration to empower the teeming youths with employment opportunities in the agricultural sector.

The minister added that job creation and security were among top priorities of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Wike said Poland could arrange for some of its investors to set up large farms in Abuja that would employ the youths, and eventually owned the farms in due course.

Tarnawska, said she had been in Nigeria for over five years as Ambassador of Poland, and described the country as a very interesting place to live in.

She explained that the visit was to assure the minister of the continued bilateral relationship developed many years ago.

Abuja rail mass transit ready for inauguration in May – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, March 6, declared that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) will be ready for inauguration in May.

Wike disclosed this when the Belgium Ambassador to Nigeria, Daniel Bertrand, visited him in Abuja.

He said the rail is 95 percent completed.

The minister explained that the feat was part of the efforts to improve public transportation in the nation’s capital.

He said: “When we came on board, we found out that the Abuja Light Rail was not functional and we felt that it would be a good thing for the people if we decongest the city by putting it to function.

“So, President Bola Tinubu directed that whatever can be done, should be done, so that in his one year in office, the light rail will come on board for the use of the residents.

“The people can use it going out of the city, going to the airport and other area councils, and instead of going with their vehicles, they can take the train.

“I can announce to you that we are almost there. The company handling the project, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is almost 95 percent completed. By the grace of God, we believe that in May, Mr President will inaugurate it.”

Wike added that a discussion is ongoing with private investors to change the mode of public transportation in the FCT.

He acknowledged that the deficit in public transportation was constituting a security challenge in the city, adding that most of the operators were not registered.

He expressed concern that most residents do not know the vehicle they are boarding, adding that efforts were ongoing to ensure all public transport operators were registered.

The minister added that the government has concluded plans to build taxi and bus terminals where residents could patronize registered and identified operators.

Wike said the construction of the terminals would commence in the next month, with the approval of the Bureau of Public Procurement.
