    Driver in court for absconding with employer’s N144,000

    A 24-year-old driver, Sefiu Oladokun, who allegedly absconded with his employer’s N144,000 was on Monday brought in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused is facing a count of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told court that the accused committed the offence on July 24 at Oke-Odo market, Abule-Egba, Lagos.

    Egunjobi said the N144, 000 belonged to Oladoku’s employer, Mrs Ronke Olorunda.

    “The accused was a driver to the complainant but ran away with his employer’s money,’’ he said.

    Egunjobi also said the complainant gave the accused some cartoons of noodles to deliver to one of her customers but failed to deliver the money from the delivery of goods to his employer.

    “The complainant gave the accused some cartoons of noodle to deliver to a customer who needs them urgently.

    “He delivered the goods, collected the money and absconded with it.

    “Thereafter, the accused refused to pick the calls from the complainant, but he was later arrested by the police,’’ he said.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The accused risks three-year jail, if found guilty of stealing according to the provisions of Section 287.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.I Raji, granted the accused N 50,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The Magistrate adjourned the case until Aug.9 for mention.

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, on Wednesday sentenced a 30-year-old applicant, James Ogwuchi, to four months imprisonment for snatching a cell phone, valued at N35,000.

    The magistrate, Mrs O.I. Raji, convicted Ogwuchi as he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Raji ordered that the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.

    “You are hereby sentenced to four months imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine,” she said.

    The accused, of no fixed address, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.
    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, had told the court that the defendant committed the offences on July 10, at Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

    He said that the accused and two other still at large, snatched a mobile phone valued at N35,000, property of one Damilola Abiodun.

    Egunjobi said the accused approached the complainant on the guise of asking for direction and in the process snatched his phone from him and ran away.

    “The accused fraudulently stole the complainant’s cell phone.

    “The complainant raised an alarm, the accused was arrested, while others escaped with the phone,” he said.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Man in court for settling transport fare with counterfeit Naira note

    A 29-year-old businessman, Cyril Madubuchi, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly settling transport fare with a counterfeit N1000 note .

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Goerge Nwosu, told the court that Madubuchi committed the offence on June 12 at Akilo, Ogba, Lagos.

    He said that the accused and one other person still at large cheated one Augustine Reuben, by giving him a fake Naira note.

    “The accused boarded the complainant’s tricycle; when he got to his bus-stop, he disembarked and presented N1000 for the settlement of the fare for himself and his friend, and collected N900 balance.

    “The complainant discovered after they had left, that the money was counterfeit,” he said.

    Nwosu said that nemesis however caught up with them when they unknowingly boarded the complainant’s tricycle in the evening.

    “The accused and his friend again boarded the complainant’s tricycle; the complainant recognized them and raised alarm.

    “When they tried to escape, people around chased and apprehended the Madubuchi, while his friend escaped,” narrated Nwosu.

    Madubuchi, who resides at Pen-Cinema, Agege, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.

    The offence contravened Section 323 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 323 attracts seven years jail term for offender.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.I Raji, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N30, 000.

    She directed that the accused must also produce two sureties as part of the bail condition, noting that the sureties must be gainfully employed.

    She said that the sureties must show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case has been adjourned till June 28, for mention.

  • Man arraigned for stealing phone

    A 24-year-old applicant, Samuel Majekodumi, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing a cell phone valued at N46,000.

    Majekodumi of no fixed address, however, denied the charge and was admitted to bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, said the defendant committed the offence on April 22 at Gafar Close, Adeniji Jones, Ikeja, Lagos.
    He said that the accused stole a cell phone valued at N46,000, property of one Bukola Akanbi.
    Nwosu said that the accused unlawfully entered into the premises of Access Advertising Company Security post with intent to commit felony.
    “The complainant was charging her phone at the security post and she left to get water.
    “As the complainant was coming back, she saw the accused coming out of the security post.
    “The complainant quickly entered the security post to check her phone, but discovered that it has been unplugged and stolen.
    “She raised an alarm and ran after the accused who took to his heels.
    “The accused was apprehended with the help of people and the phone was recovered,” he said.
    The offence contravened Sections 287 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence attracts a jailed term of three years on conviction.

    The Magistrate O.I. Raji, adjourned THE CASE until May 10 for mention.

     

  • Carpenter charged with robbing man with knife

    A 23-year-old carpenter, Femi Ariyo, who allegedly robbed a man of his mobile phone with a knife, was on Monday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides in Ogba area of Ikeja, is being tried for conspiracy, robbery and stealing.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused committed the offences on April 6 at Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, at about 5.00 a.m.

    He alleged that the accused with two others still at large, who was armed with a knife, robbed the complainant, Semiu Okunlola, of his phone worth N25, 000.

    “The accused accosted the complainant, who was going to work at about 5.00 a.m., brought out a knife and threatened to stab him to death if he refused to surrender his phone.

    “Out of fear, he released the phone to the accused while he and his accomplices took to their heels.

    “The complainant raised an alarm and passers-by gave them a hot chase and caught the accused while others escaped with the phone,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 285, 295 and 409 of the Criminal Law of News Agency of Nigeria, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides three years, while Section 295 prescribes sentence not less than 21 years.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.I. Raji, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 bails with two sureties in like sum.

    Raji said the two sureties should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case has been adjourned until May 2 for mention.
