    Woman docked over N2.3m fraud

    A 60-year-old businesswoman, Christiana Oladipo, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos accused of defrauding a woman of N2.3 million.

    Oladipo was arraigned before Magistrate O.J. Awope on charges of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

    The accused, who resides at Ayobo area of Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Awope said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court the accused committed the offences sometime in November 2017 at Ayobo, Lagos.

    Ayorinde said that the accused fraudulently obtained N2.3 million from the complainant, Mrs Titilayo Olanrewaju, on pretext of selling a Lexus jeep LR 330 to her.

    “The accused, who claimed she was selling cars, showed the complainant some cars on her phone and the complainant made her choice.

    “After negotiation, the complainant paid the money but the accused relocated to Ogun,” he said.

    Ayorinde said that the accused was arrested through her son.

    “The accused son was seen in a club, he was apprehended and that led to the arrest of the accused,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 314 stipulates 15 years imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretence.

    The case was adjourned to Jan. 29, for mention.

    Man bags six months for stealing car battery

    A 26-year-old unemployed, Alex Godwin, is to spend the next six months in prison for stealing a car battery, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, has ruled.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.J. Awope, pronounced the verdict after the accused pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing on Thursday.

    Awope, who sentenced Godwin without an option of fine, said the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.

    “You are hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine.

    “The sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts,” she said.

    Godwin, a resident of Alagbado in Ogun, had at his arraignment on December 4 pleaded guilty to the offence and was remanded in prison.

    When the case was called up for fact and sentence, he still admitted guilt but pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 27 at Iju Road, Agege, Lagos.

    He said that the accused stole a motor battery whose value and owner yet unknown.

    “The accused was caught with the battery by security guards on the street.

    “When he was questioned, he confessed that he removed the battery inside a commercial bus parked along the road,” he said.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Driver allegedly bolts with beer worth N554,000

    A 30 -year-old driver, Tope Alesinloye, who allegedly bolted with alcoholic drinks valued at N554,000, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused, who resides at Ifo area of Ogun, is facing a charge of stealing.

    Alesinloye pleaded not guilty of the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.J Awope, granted the accused N200,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum. Awope said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 8 at Ogba, Lagos.

    He said that the accused absconded with 168 crates of Gulder lager beer worth N554, 000, property of Fafem Haulage Nigeria Ltd.

    The prosecutor said that the accused was supposed to deliver the drinks to a customer at Yaba, Lagos.

    “On his way, he diverted the truck to an unknown customer where he sold the drinks.

    “The accused abandoned the truck and ran to Ekiti.

    “He was later arrested and handed over to the police,’’ he said.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    Reports say that the accused risks three years in prison, if found guilty of stealing according to the provisions of Section 287.

    The case was adjourned until January 19 for mention.

    Court docks man over N2.6m fraud

    For allegedly perpetrating a N2.6million fraud, a 30-year-old man, Tasiu Ibrahim, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Ibrahim, whose address was not provided, is being tried for fraud and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, said that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 30 at Gatankowa market, Abule-Egba, Lagos.

    He said that the accused unlawfully obtained N2.6million from one Mr Salisu Abdullahi on the pretext of supplying aluminum and iron scraps.

    Ayorinde said that after the accused collected the money from the complainant, he was nowhere to be found.

    “The accused, after receiving the alert, absconded to an unknown destination.

    “Efforts made by the complainant to trace and retrieve his money proved unsuccessful until the accused was arrested after eight months of the fraud,” the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015  (Revised).

    The section 314 prescribes 15 years jail term for obtaining money under false pretences.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.J Awope, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until Nov. 11 for mention.

    Two men docked over vehicle theft

    A driver, Godwin Okpe and his conductor, Dare Shobola, who allegedly stole a vehicle valued at N850,000 were on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The defendants -Okpe, 53, and Shobola, 30, are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The defendants who reside at Agbado in Ogun, however, pleaded not guilty and were admitted to bail in the sum of N250,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. J. Awope, adjourned the case till July 17 for mention.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 12 at Abule-Egba, Lagos.

    He said that the accused persons conspired to steal a vehicle valued at N850,000 property of one Mr Akeem Jolaosho.

    “The accused stole the complainant’s Ford bus,” he said.

    Ayorinde said that the complainant gave his bus to the defendants, after some days, the accused persons told him that the vehicle was stolen from where it was parked.

    “The accused persons called the complainant to inform him that thieves had stolen his bus.

    “The complainant suspected a foul play, he handed over the accused persons to the police,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendants may be jailed for three years if found guilty of stealing according to the provisions of Section 287.

    Two docked over theft of N.5m valuables

    Two unemployed men, Kamoru Onabamiro and Henry Chuks, were on Thursday arraigned in  an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing  valuables worth  N500, 000.

    Onabamiro, 40, a resident of Meiran area of Abule-Egba, Lagos;  and Chuks, 33, who resides at Agege, Lagos, are being tried for breach of peace, conspiracy and stealing.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offence on May 3 at Aluminium Market, Dopemu, Agege, Lagos.

    He said that the accused and others still at large conspired to steal  valuables worth N500, 000  and  belonging to Mr Billiaminu Olamiti.

    “The accused stole the complainant’s gold jewellery  valued at N420,000, a Tecno phone worth N30 and  cash of N50,000,  with total items stolen being  N500,000,” he said.

    The prosecutor said that the accused also conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of the  peace by chasing consumers away from the market.

    “The accused, who claimed to be area boys,  stormed the market and were extorting traders.

    “They hindered  the movement of goods into  the market and also chased away customers.

    “The complainant, who was the President of the Aluminium Market Union,  was called and when he got to the scene, he ordered his members to open their shops and continue their normal businesses.

    “The accused got angry and began  beating him  and  in the process dispossessed him of his valuables,” he said.

    The offences, he said,  contravened Sections 166, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused, however,  pleaded not guilty  and were granted N200,000 bail   with two sureties each in like amount.

    Section 287 prescribes three years jail term for stealing.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. J Awope, adjourned the case till July 7 for mention.

    Two traders arraigned for allegedly damaging man’s eye

    The accused– Amechi, 30, and Osha, 20 — who reside at Abimbola Estate in Ogun and Dalemo, Alakuko, Lagos respectively, are being tried for breach of peace, conspiracy and assault.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences on May 30 in Alakuko on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    He said that the accused conspired and physically assaulted a co-trader, Mr. Busayo Ogundipe, and injured his right eye.

    “The accused assaulted the complainant by beating him up and damaging his right eye.”

    Ayorinde said the accused displayed his loaves of bread at the complainant’s stand and when the complainant came and asked him to go to his stand, he descended on him.

    “When the complainant asked him to go back to his stand, he refused.

    “While he was trying to carry the bread to his stand, the accused grabbed him and beat him up and his friend, Osha, also joined him.”

    The prosecutor said the complainant lost an Infinix phone valued at N65,000 and N25,000 cash in the process.

    The offences contravened Sections 169, 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and were granted bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. O.J. Awope, adjourned the case until June 23 for mention.

    Man faces N470,000 fraud charge

    A 22-year-old man, Sulaimon Azeez , was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N470, 000 on the pretext of constructing aluminium staircase railings in a house.

    Azeez, a resident of Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for fraud and stealing.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences on May 4 at Omolewa Street, Orile-Agege, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused collected N470, 000 from the complainant, Mr Olaitan Akande, to install aluminum staircase railings in his house.

    The prosecutor told the court that after the complainant transferred the N470, 000 into the accused’s account, he disappeared.

    Efforts by the complainant to get Azeez to install the railings or refund the money were unsuccessful, he said.

    He said the accused was later arrested at a club in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Trader drugs two security guards, steals N3.5m vehicle

    A 23-year-old trader, Emmanuel Agbasi, who allegedly drugged two security guards and stole a bus valued N3.5million, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides at Egbeda area of Lagos, appeared before Magistrate O. J. Awope, on a four-count charge of conspiracy, burglary, damage and stealing.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, said the accused committed the offences on April 9, at College Road, Ifako, Agege, Lagos.

    He said the accused and others still at large conspired to drug two security guards and stole a vehicle valued N3.5million, property of F.M. Best Bargain Supermarket.

    “The accused, who claimed to be one of the customers of the company, gave the two security guards Orijin drink to consume.

    “The guards drank it that evening and slept off; by 2:00 a.m., the accused burgled the company, damaging four iron doors valued at N400,000.

    “He entered into the managing director’s office, took the key of the Ford bus, and drove it away.

    “The accused was later arrested and handed over to the police,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 307 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Mrs Awope adjourned the case until June 23, for mention.

    Man arraigned for stealing N1.2m generator brain box

    A 25-year-old generator repairer, Emeka Okoli, who allegedly entered into a bank and stole a generator brain box valued at N1.2million, was on Monday in Lagos released on a N200,000 bail.

    Okoli, of no fixed address, entered a `not-guilty’ plea to the two-count charge of intent to commit felony and stealing.

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail conditions.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.J Awope, said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences on May 29 at Ilupeju, Lagos.

    He said that the accused unlawfully entered the First Bank premises at night and stole a giant generator’s brain box valued at N1.2million, property of First Bank Plc.

    “The accused jumped into the bank and went to the generator post, he came with sophisticated instruments to disconnect the brain box.

    “The two security guards on duty heard sound from the generator stand and they decided to check what was happening.

    “Immediately the accused sighted them coming towards him, he dropped the brain box and jumped the fence to escape.

    “The guards gave him a hot chase and he was apprehended and handed over to the police.

    “The brain box was recovered,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 308(2) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 308(2) prescribes a seven-year jail term for convicted offenders.

    The case was adjourned until June 19, for mention.
