  • Police arraign two suspected robbers in Lagos

    Two suspected commercial bus robbers — Sunday Ogenero and Daniel Johnson — were on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court charged dispossessing occupants of money and valuables worth thousands of naira.

    The accused — Ogenero, 24, lives in Agausa area of Ajegunle in Apapa, while Johnson, 22, resides at Okoafo area of Badagry.

    Both are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing to which they have pleaded not guilty.

    The accused, Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi, told the court committed the offences with others now  at large on Feb. 28 along Apapa Expressway at 7.30 p.m.

    According to him, the accused stole one Techno phone valued at N36,000, N34,000 cash and other valuables from the complainant, Tunde Mustapha, while he was returning home from work.

    “The complainant, after the close of work, boarded a commercial bus heading towards Mile 2 area of Lagos, unknown to him that other occupants of the bus were robbers.

    “The duo dispossessed him of the items but were caught by some passersby, who handed them over to the police,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 ( Revised ).

    The newsmen report that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties each in like sum. The case was adjourned until July 5.

    Factory worker faces car battery theft charge

    A factory worker, Oche Joseph, who allegedly stole a car battery valued at N25, 000, on Monday appeared in  an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Joseph, 31, who lives in new garage area of Mende,  Maryland, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The accused, according to Police Prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie, committed the offences at No. 1, Salami St, Mende, Maryland, on Oct 31.

    He said the complainant, Mrs Mojisola Salami, reported the incident at Anthony Police Station on Oct. 31.

    Ihiehie told the court that the complainant, while in her house was alerted that the accused and another man still at large had opened her car and stolen the battery valued at N25, 000.

    He said the security guard opposite her house was watching when they were removing the battery.

    “He moved in and apprehended the accused while the other accomplice ran away.”

    The offences  contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 411 stipulates two years for conspiracy.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties whose addresses must be verified.

    She adjourned the case until Jan. 29, 2018 for hearing.

    Salesboy to spend Christmas, New Year in prison for stealing motorcycle

    A 20-year-old, Amuzat Ahmed, is to spend Christmas and the New Year in prison for stealing a motorcycle valued at N230, 000 and a Samsung Galaxy phone, an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court ruled in Lagos on Monday.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, who sentenced Ahmed of Imota in Ikorodu area of Lagos State to one year imprisonment, pronounced him guilty as charged.

    The convict had pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing brought against him.

    Sule-Amzat held that the convict should serve out the one year without an option of fine.

    “The prosecution was able to establish that the convict, a salesboy, deceived and lured the caretaker of the said motorcycle to a hotel on the pretext of entertaining him,” she said.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 26 at Ajose Street, Mende in Maryland area of Lagos.

    Ihiehie said the complainants, Mr Abubakar Mohammed, reported the case at Anthony Police Post.

    “The complainant left his Bajaj motorcycle with registration no. AGL 232 QH valued at N230, 000 and a Samsung Galaxy 03 phone valued at N36, 000 in the care of Husseini Saliu on Sept. 29.

    “The accused lured Saliu to a hotel at Mile 12 to entertain him, stole the motorcycle and the phone and ran away.”

    Ihiehie said the accused was later apprehended at Maryland Bus Stop on Oct. 26.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

    The section stipulates three years in prison for offenders.

    Man gets three years imprisonment for stealing cell phone

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced Kabiru Mohammed, 27, to three years imprisonment for stealing a cell phone valued at N33, 000.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, sentenced Mohammed after he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing.

    Sule-Amzat held that the convict should served-out the three years without an option of fine.

    He said the prosecution was able to establish that the convict stole and sold phone to one Baba Iyabo at Mile 12 Market in Lagos.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told court that the accused committed the offence with some others still at large on July 6 at Bariga, Lagos.

    Ihiehe said the complainant, one Ajayi Okikola, a security guard attached to Mile 12 Market reported the matter at the Ketu Police post.

    “While the complainant was on duty, information got to him that the accused had stolen a phone from someone at Bariga and was heading to Mile 12 Market to sell it.

    “The complainant intercepted the accused, who confessed to have stolen the Infinix cell phone from a passenger in a bus at Bariga.

    The offence contravened Section 411 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

    Labourer gets four years for stealing welding machines

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday sentenced a labourer, 22-year-old Osaro Omoruyi, to four years imprisonment without an option of fine for stealing welding machines and cables valued at N71, 000.

    The conviction followed a guilty plea by the labourer.

    Omoruyi , whose address was not provided, was arraigned for stealing.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, who handed down the verdict, said the court established that the convict stole a welding machine, a grinding machine and some cables.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt.  told the court that Osaro committed the offence on June 27 at a workshop behind Mobil filling station by CMD Road, Magodo, Lagos.

    Ihiehe said the complainant, Rasaki Hassan, a welder, reported the incident at Ketu Police post.

    “On the same day, he received a phone call from a security guard informing him that Osaro has been caught stealing his welding machines at his workshop.

    “Osaro had successfully dismantled the machines and was on his way out when he was caught by the security guard.

    “He confessed to have broken the security lock and stolen the working tools as he cried out to the court for leniency,’’ Ihiehe said.

    The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    Architect docked over theft of N2.4m

    An Architect, Gloria Odidi on Thursday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over alleged theft of N2.4 million from a lawyer, who hired her for a job.

    Forty-year-old Odidi, who resides on Francis Street, Heritage Estate in Ojodu Abiodun, Ogun, is facing counts of stealing and fraud.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that Odidi stole N2, 413, 250 transferred to her account by the lawyer, Mrs Kemi Omotosho, on March 3.

    “On February 24, the complainant gave the accused a job to renovate a three-bedroom apartment located at Opebi, Ikeja.

    “The money was paid on March 3, and the accused promised to finish the work within a month of the payment.

    “After the stipulated time, the complainant went to her property at Opebi to discover that the accused had yet to complete the job.

    “All efforts to get the accused to carry out the job were unsuccessful,’’ he said.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, admitted her to N200, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    She directed that the sureties are to show evidence of tax payment, while one of them must be a blood relation of the accused.

    The case has been adjourned until Aug. 1 for mention.

    Commercial bus driver, gets N100, 000 bail

    A 33-year-old commercial bus driver docked for allegedly driving in a reckless manner and causing the death of his conductor, was on Thursday in Lagos granted a N100, 000 bail.

    Odumade Muyiwa, the accused, who resides at Ilaje Road, Bariga, had pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of dangerous and reckless driving and manslaughter.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. O. Sule-Amzat, who gave the ruling at an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, also told the accused to produce two sureties in like sum, one of whom must be gainfully employed.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Ihiehie Lucky, had told the court that the accused drove recklessly, which caused the vehicle to summersault on the highway.

    “All the passengers were rushed to the Lagos State Emergency Centre, Old Toll Gate, Ikeja for medical treatment and later discharged,’’ he said.

    The prosecutor said that only the conductor to the vehicle, Adeyekun Babarinde, 36, was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital for further treatment, but later died.

    Ihiehie said Muyiwa, who drove a Volkswagen Vanagan commercial bus with Lagos Reg. No. BDG 370 X5, committed the offences on May 1, by a petrol station along the Lagos-Gbagada Expressway inward Oworonshoki.

    He said that a team of traffic management officials rushed to the scene and took the passengers to the hospital.

    The offences, he said, contravened Sections 20 and 18(1) of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until July 4, for mention.

     

  • Undergraduate jailed three years for stealing phones

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Wednesday sentenced a 20-year-old undergraduate, Innocent Onyeoziri, to three years imprisonment for stealing phones in a church.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, convicted and sentenced Onyeoziri, without an option fine.

    The undergraduate, who resides on Adaranito Street, Famous Bus Stop, Alapere in Ketu, Lagos, had admitted guilt.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, submitted that Onyeoziri stole two phones worth N62,000 and a SIM card in a Redeemed Christian Church of God parish  on Okunusi Street, Alapere on Dec. 13, 2016.

    Ihiehie said that the phones belonged to Mr Oluwasanmi Olukunmi and Mr A. Agbolade, who reported the case along with one other person, at the Alapere Police Post.

    “On Dec 13, 2016 at 7.00p.m., the complainants were at the Redeemed Christian Church of God on Okunusi Street, Alapere for evening service.

    “During the service, Oluwasanmi was charging his phone as well as the other two complainants – Jaiyeola and Agbolade.

    “The accused came into the church and took the phones of Oluwasanmi, removed the SIM card in the phone of Jaiyeola and took the Injoo phone of Agbolade, and absconded,” he said.

    The prosecutor said that it took Jaiyeola some time to track the convict through the SIM card he used to borrow airtime to the tune of N30,000.

    “On May 10, the accused came back to the church area and was arrested,’’ Ihiehie said.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

     

  • Court sentences butcher to three months for stabbing another butcher

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos  on Wednesday sentenced a butcher, Jibril Jimoh, to three months imprisonment without an option of fine for stabbing his colleague with a knife on the chest and left arm.

    The sentence followed a guilty plea by the accused.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, said the court had no option than to sentence the accused since he had pleaded guilty.

    She said the prosecutor had informed the court that Jibril had earlier stabbed the same colleague, Folawole Seyi, and was “forgiven his sins”.

    The convict, Jibril Jimoh, 28, who operates at Ketu Market, Mile 12 in Lagos, was arraigned for causing grievous harm.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that Jimoh committed the offence on April 14 at FO Filling Station at Under Bridge, Mile 12.

    Ihiehe said the complainant, Seyi, reported the case at Mile 12 Police Post in company of some witnesses.

  • Porter docked for phone theft

    A porter, Isiaka Jamiu, who allegedly stole a Lenovo phone valued at N30, 000 from a man while boarding a vehicle at a motor park, was on Wednesday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The 20-year-old accused, who operates at Jakande Market, Ketu,  is facing a charge of stealing.

    According to prosecution, the accused committed the offence on April 20 at Gunwa Motor Park, Ikosi- Ketu, Lagos.

    Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie told the court that the complainant, Mr Oluwanishola Ibrahim, who reported the incident at Ketu Police Station, said he was at the park to board a bus going to Ogun State.

    “The complainant was trying to avoid being hit by a taxi when the accused approached him that he might be harassed by the police because of the bag he was carrying.

    “In the process, the accused removed his phone.”

    The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which carries a penalty of three years jail term.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, admitted the accused to a bail of N20, 000 with two reliable sureties, whose addresses must be verified.

    The case was adjourned until May 31.
