  • Oath of selflessness

    Fifty-two graduates of the Department of Radiography and Radiological Science, College of Medical Science, University of Calabar (UNICAL), has been inducted by the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN). STANLEY UCHEGBU (Accounting) reports.

     

    The Department of Radiography and Radiological Science in the College of Medical Science of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) was agog last week.

    No fewer than 52 graduates of the department were inducted by Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) into its fold.

    The colourful ceremony was held at the Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence Auditorium of the institution.

    The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof James Epoke, while declaring the ceremony open, described the graduands as “tear rubbers”, urging them not to violate the ethics of the profession. The VC told the inductees to always aspire for knowledge to boost their career.

    Noting that Nigeria still lacks required personnel in the profession, Epoke advised the graduands to practise the profession in accordance with the RRBN oath of engagement.

    The Provost of College of Medical Science, Prof Maurice Asuquo, said the rigorous academic training received by the inductees would shape their character and journey in the profession.

    The provost, represented by Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Prof Victor Ansa, said the students must bring their training and character to bear in the practice.

    The Dean of Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, Prof Francis Useh, noted that the school had graduated more than 1,000 radiographers, imploring the inductees to use their knowledge to improve service delivery in the health sector. He said they must always show attributes of sincerity, honesty, dedication and selfless to excel in the profession.

    While administering the oath on the inductees, the RRBN Acting Registrar, Mr Michael Okpaleke, urged them to effectively use radiographic equipment and techniques for their practice, advising them against unprofessional engagement.

    Okpaleke said it was part of the ethics of the profession for practitioners to conduct themselves in professional manner, provide service to humanity, respect patients’ rights and show them care irrespective of their conditions.

    The Cross River State branch Chairman, Association of Radiographers of Nigeria (ARN), Mr Otu Asinyang, welcomed the inductees into the association, admonishing them to aspire for knowledge.

    The Acting Head of Department of Radiography and Radiological Science, Dr Ndubuisi Chiaghanam, congratulated the inductees, saying their licences should be a reminder of the trust reposed in them by the school and the public.

    In his lecture titled: Team working in diagnostic imaging, Dr Samuel Inyang, the guest lecturer, emphasised that teamwork was all radiographers to develop the profession. He said the aim to achieve good quality radiographic images could be accomplished if practitioners worked as a team.

    Highlights of the event included presentation of prizes to students who distinguished themselves in the use of equipment for diagnostic radiography, radiography techniques and clinical proficiency. There was also presentation of Provost Award of Excellence and prize to overall best graduating student.

    Mfon Moses Friday received four awards, including Best Graduating Students, Best Student in Equipment for Diagnostic Radiography and in Radiography Techniques and Provost Award for Excellence.

    Responding on behalf of the inductees, Mfon described his feat as a product of hard work. He praised the department’s staff for devoting their time and energy to give them quality training in medical imaging science. He advised his colleagues to show good attitude to work and render selfless service.

    Epoke announced an automatic employment of Mfon in the Radiography Department as assistant lecturer. The appointment, according to the VC, will take effect after Mfon’s internship and National Youth Service.

    Speaking with CAMPUSLIFE, one of the inductees, Chukwuemeka Obuegbe, said: “It has been challenging years all through the training. We were taken through rigorous process in basic medical and clinical sciences but I thank God it has ended, having taken the oath of radiography practice. I am indebted to my parents and my lecturers. I promise to uphold the virtues of humanism and care for the wellbeing of patients. I will abide by the oath and ensure that every patient gets good service.”

  • Depose to oath of secrecy

    The Office of the Head of Service, Lagos State has directed that its  workers should depose to the oath of secrecy in line with its Public Service Rules.

    The management has asked its workers to depose to the oath of secrecy immediately.

    To make the exercise easier, the Legal Division has provided forms, which are available at the State High Court Registry, Badagry.

    Similarly, arrangement has also been made with a Notary Public for those who prefer the oath to be administered on them in the institution.

    The exercise ends on Tuesday, May 5.

  • Union leaders take oath

    Members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, have been sworn in. The ceremony was held at the Multipurpose Hall of the university.

    The hall was filled to the brim, as students trooped to the venue to witness the event. Members of staff were also in attendance.

    The Registrar, Mr Bamidele Olotu, administered the oath on the students’ leaders, urging them to employ diligence in discharging their duties.

    The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Olujide Ajidahun, advised the union leaders to be committed and make the welfare of their colleagues a priority. The Dean urged them to shun violence and promote transparency in their administration.

    The outgoing union president, Olusegun Ikuegbebe, said it was time for him to move on after what he described as a successful tenure. He urged his successor to build on his achievements and set new goals.

    Olusegun described the DSA as a father, noting that he was supportive of his administration.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, who assumed office last week, said students’ unionism is a platform for breeding future leaders. If harnessed properly, Prof Ajibefun said unionism could be used to deepen democracy.

    The VC appealed to the students’ leaders to deal with their fellow students in fairness, equity and justice, urging them to run the affairs of the union with transparency.

    Prof. Ajibefun assured the students of his intention to run student-friendly administration, noting that he expected students to reciprocate the gesture with peaceful conduct and discipline.

    The president of the union, Olukayode Ogunade, hailed students for reposing confidence in him, assuring them of a new era and vibrant unionism.

  • NANS leaders take oath

    Ladi Kwali Hall of Sheraton Hotel in Abuja was filled  when the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) inaugurated members of its national executive.

    The event hosted dignitaries among who was Dr Ahmadu Ali, for chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who chaired the occasion.

    Other guests are the Attah of Igala,  Micheal Oboni; Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students’ Matter, Comrade Jude Imagwe, NANS Grand Patron, Chief Tunde Adeniyi, Chief of Staff to former Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Osenu Odewale, and Comrade Igwe Ude-Umanta, chairman, NANS Convention Planning Committee.

    Ali, said the crop of NANS leaders were intellectuals, who had taken up the challenge to support the government in the development of the nation. “I believe the new leadership of NANS is the continuation of last tenure and we want you to take Nigeria to the next level. This is your time; you have no time to wait for. There is no barren in age, I. want us to cooperate and move Nigeria forward,” he said.

    Imagwe urged the new executives to promote good values through their activities, assuring them of government’s readiness to support them and improve the standard of education. He said the president had allocated substantial percentage to education, which, he said, has resulted in diversification of our tertiary education.

    He said: “It is enemy of education that wants to destabilised Nigerian education. We must rise in support of the government’s effort to stop these aliens. Election is approaching and I urge students not to allow politicians to use them as thugs. We must differentiate ourselves has students. NANS leadership must help the electoral body to ensure free and fair election, because they can’t succeed without the support of students.”

    The NANS president, Tijani Usman, said the convention, which produced the executive was the most peaceful in the history of the association. He listed his priorities, saying he would agitate for proper funding of education and embark role on human capital development programmes.

    He said: “I am aware that the government has been considering the idea fee increment in universities, polytechnics and colleges of cducation. Their reasons look appealing to close funding gap of these institutions, but the wider implication is that education will be taken away from the students of the poor. This will increase rank of social miscreants, which can easily be mobilised as agent of terrorism and vices.”

    Vice President (External Affairs), Oluwatosin Ogunkuade promised that the association would do its best to promote scholarship, entrepreneurship, job creation and free education for students.

    72 take Hippocratic Oath

    No fewer than 72  Medicine, graduate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, the Anambra State capital, have been inducted at the Gilbert Uzodike Auditorium, Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi.

    The graduands, all clad in black suits and white shirts, exuded class and professionalism as they filed into the hall.

    The outgoing Dean of the faculty, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu and the Sub Dean, Dr Charles Okafor, who chaired the Planning Committee of the 36th induction,  charged the graduands to imbibe good dress sense at all times.

    In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku, charged the graduands to be worthy ambassadors of the institution and help to mobilise resources to facilitate its continued production of high-level manpower for the country.

    Prof Ahaneku, who was represented by Prof Brian Adinma, congratulated the graduands, stating that the event marked a watershed for the years they put into their studies.

    The Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu, in his remark, thanked the Chief Medical Director of NAUTH, Prof Anthony Igwegbe and the Board of NAUTH for the provision of conducive learning environment and prayed for God’s guidance for the graduands.

    Prof Ikechebelu, a professor of Obstertrics and Gynaecology advised the doctors to ensure they are in areas where they have comparative advantage, disclosing that a lot of young doctors fell out of the residency programme in pursuit of specialisation in clinical medicine when their natural ability was in biomedical research or policy issues.

    In his remark, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Anambra State, Dr Nnadozie Paul Obiegbu, charged the granduands to discover themselves and put God first in all their endeavours.

    Speaking on behalf of other medical graduands, Dr Egwuekwe  Sopuruchukwu Ogonna, assured their guardians that they would make the institution proud, saying they had imbibed virtues and learning coupled with hard work from their lecturers.

    Dr Egwuekwe, who won four awards out of five available awards of the college, appreciated the contributions of parents and well-wishers for their efforts.

    Chief Chigbo Kenneth, one of the parents expressed joy for the doctors who were able to complete their academic programme.

  • Union leaders take oath

    STUDENTS’ leaders of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have been sworn in. The event, which took place at the university auditorium, was attended by principal officers of the institution.

    The Dean of Students’ Affairs (DSA), Prof O.A. Omotesho, hailed the outgoing executive for its commitment to the students’ welfare.

    He said: “The outgoing executive members are one of the finest in the history of the university. The in-coming leaders should borrow a leaf from their outgoing one. They are unique because this is the first time we have four ladies in the union’s executive.”

    The outgoing president, Abiodun Lawal, said: “Most people might find it difficult giving account of their stewardship at the expiration of their tenure. I thank all my colleagues in the executive for their support and loyalty. I also wish you the best in your future endeavours.”

    The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Abdulganiyu Ambali, said: “The outgoing union members were in office before I assumed office, but I see them as people I can truly call my own. However, if second term was permited in the union’s constitution, I personally would have advocated a second term for them.”

    Afterwards, the executive members took the oath, which was administered by Mr A. Akanbi.

    The Deputy VC, Prof Isah Fakunle, charged he union leaders to be servant leaders.

    “One thing you should know is that the university belongs to you and that you are the most important component of the university. Therefore, you must be hardworking, diligent and to always strive to be better,” he said.

    40 take pharmacy oath

    No fewer than 40 graduates were inducted into Pharmacists Council of Nigeria by the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Ibadan. The induction ceremony was held at the Large Lecture Theatre of the Faculty of Pharmacy last week.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Isaac Adewole, represented his deputy on Administration, Prof Emilolorun Ayelari, said the faculty had demonstrated great commitment to meeting the manpower needs of the nation’s pharmaceutical sector in its over 30 years of existence.

    The VC said the faculty’s dedication to excellence had resulted in the establishment of the Centre for Drug Discovery, Development and Production (CDDDP) through MacArthur Grant for Excellence.

    The Dean, Prof Chinedum Babalola, congratulated the graduands and their parents, saying the faculty had produced great professionals with local and international recognitions.

    Mrs Fayo Williams, who delivered the induction lecture titled: From lab to enterprise: cultivating the entrepreneurial mindset, advised the graduands to be creative and learn new skills to make them employable. Mrs Williams noted that there was need for a paradigm shift as a result of high unemployment rate in the country.

    The Registrar, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), Mr Elijah Mohammed, charged them to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism.

    Mohammed decried the problem of brain drain that had led to the shortage of pharmacists in the nation’s pharmaceutical sector.  He assured  the graduating students  that his administration would reposition pharmacy registry for effective service delivery and institutionalisation of good pharmacy practice in Nigeria.

    Abiola Adenike Ola emerged best graduating students and was awarded the PCN Prize.

  • Pharmacists take oath

    The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has inducted pharmacy graduates in an event held at the El-kanemi Hall of the university.

    The ceremony was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ibrahim Njodi, who led body of principal officers to the event. Also, members of the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) witnessed the induction.

    Prof Njodi said there was a critical shortage of pharmacists in the nation’s health sector, adding that the university was committed to maintaining good health in the region. He announced automatic employments for the best two graduating students.

    The Acting Registrar of PCN, Gloria Abumere, said the induction of the students would boost the number of qualified pharmacists in Nigeria. She encouraged them to do the best for the profession and to upgrade their knowledge to be relevant in the profession.

    One of the inductees, Ibukun Odukale, said: “I am happy to finally do my induction today. The past seven years in Maiduguri have been challenging but God was faithful and saw me through. Today, I am a certified pharmacist. I will do my help for the pharmacy profession.”

    Crawford Varsity post-graduate students take oath

    Forty-six pioneer postgraduate students of Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, have been administered oath of matriculation.

    Welcoming the fresh students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Samson Ayantunji, advised them to sustain the high moral standard of the faith-based institution.

    “You can only be a leader if you are a reader” Ayanlaja noted.

    Giving a breakdown of the new students at the university where the event was held, Ayanlaja said that 17 enrolled for M.sc Economics, six for M.sc Business Administration, 15 for Masters in Business Administration as well as eight for Post-Graduate Diploma programme.

    He challenged them to justify their opportunity and take advantage of the platform provided by the university to realise their dreams.

    He said: “You are not only to study to pass examinations and obtain certificates, but to get knowledge that would be applied to solve society, business and national problems.”

    Professor Ayanlaja urged Nigerians who are desirous of quality education to take advantage of the university’s international business exchange programme with Galilee International Management Institute’s (GIMI) integrated course work and practical for its MBA programme.

    7,000 take oath at ABU

    The quest for the search of knowledge must be your priority, and must never be compromised with anything else.” These were the words of Prof Mustapha Abdulahi, Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria when he gave his speech at the institution’s matriculation ceremony held at the Mamman Kotangora Square last Friday.

    Prof Mustapha advised the freshers to shun vices that could hinder them from attaining their academic aims.

    He said the management frowned at examination malpractice, cultism, riot and indecent dressing, adding that the university would not hesitate to expel any student engaging in the vices from the school.

    The Registrar, Mallam Abdullahi Kundila,  said a total of 7,000 students were admitted out of the over 50,000 that participated in the screening exercise.

    The students could not hide their joy after they took the matriculation oath.

    Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE, Abdullahi Ahmad, who was admitted into the Department of Human Anatomy, said: “I am happy to be admitted into this prestigious university.”

    At the event were the Deputy VC (Administration), Prof Amos Adamu, his Academics counterpart, Prof  Na’iya Sada and other principal officers of the university.
