Osun monarch urges traditional rulers to uphold cultural mandate

The Olowu of Kuta, HRM Oba Dr. Hammeed Adekunle Oyelude Makama, CON, Tegbosun III, has called on traditional rulers to remain steadfast in their role as custodians of culture and tradition.

Speaking at a Ramadan Lecture held at his palace on Saturday, Oba Makama emphasized that traditional rulers are symbols of cultural heritage within their jurisdictions.

“The certificate of our office mandates us to champion the culture and tradition of our people; anything outside that is beyond our role,” he stated. He further noted that no traditional ruler is crowned in a church or mosque, urging those inclined toward religious leadership to pursue their faith in appropriate settings.

The guest lecturer, Sheikh Ibrahim Arowona Annakeb, spoke on the theme “Love,” highlighting its fundamental role in human relationships. He urged Muslims to embrace love and unity, stressing that reverence for God should translate into compassion for fellow humans.

As part of the event, Oba Makama distributed foodstuffs and essential items to widows, orphans, and the less privileged, a tradition he has upheld annually.

A Kuta indigene expressed gratitude for the monarch’s generosity, noting his consistent support for the needy during Ramadan.

Also speaking at the event, former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, commended the monarch and his fellow traditional rulers for embodying the spirit of love and unity.

“I have attended several Ramadan lectures, but what I witnessed here today—traditional rulers coming together in unity—demonstrates true love,” Adebayo remarked.

Oba Makama also used the occasion to call on the government to prioritize the welfare of the poor, particularly during the fasting period.
