Benin Monarch commissions re-branded Edo traffic agency

The Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, on Tuesday commissioned the re-branded Edo State Traffic Control and Management Agency (EDSTMA).

It was during the administration of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole that the traffic agency was established and later disbanded due to complaints of harassment by members of the public.

Governor Godwin Obaseki had rebranded the agency by employing fresh personnel, provision of new uniforms, modern radio communication equipment, motor- bikes and Hilux vans.

Oba Ewuare II appealed to officials of the agency to be committed to their jobs and ensured that road users are not subjected to intimidation and harassment.

He urged them not to see their appointments as avenue to enrich themselves by collecting bribes from motorists.

His words, “I am glad that government deemed it appropriate to create a Public Complaints Department of the agency that the public can leverage on the make complaints.

“I appeal to the officials to ensure that they operate within the confines of the law to avoid denting the image of the agency”.

Managing Director of EDSTMA, Mr. Dennis Oloriegbe, said the agency would use the three basic traffic management strategies which included education, engineering and enforcement to tackle traffic problems from the roots.

Mr. Oloriegbe stated that 351 persons completed the training programme which lasted between June 20 and June 28, 2017.

Governor Godwin Obaseki assured the Benin Monarch that members of the agency have been trained to be civil and not to exploit the people.

He paid tributes to Oshiomhole for establishing EDSTMA.

  • In honour of Edo House hooligans

In honour of Edo House hooligans

Ours is a blessed nation. We are blessed with thieves, kidnappers and armed robbers. We are also blessed with educated illiterates—some of whom occupy leadership positions. Many of them are elected lawmakers, who have, however, turned out to be lawbreakers. A mischievous friend says but for parliamentary immunity, these hooligans, these barbarians, these rascals should be behind bars.

My friend is in the same class with the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, who last week advised lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly to always use democratic means to effect leadership change.

Oba Ewuare II did not mince words in describing their style as hooliganism and barbarism. He said he was not against leadership change but abhors frequent violent changes of the House leadership. The Oba was disappointed at the throwing of chairs and use of fisticuffs. He delivered an uppercut when he said these actions were alien to the prefix ‘Honourable’ they all love to attach to their names.

With due respect to the Oba, I sincerely believe that these men behind the violent leadership change in the House deserve honour for their bravery. Their wives and children should be proud of their exploits. I was green with envy watching the scenes on television. Nollywood movies are not even that interesting. Great plots without scripting.

From what I gathered, the speaker that was violently removed, Justin Okonoboh, was doing ‘chop-alone’. That is undemocratic. His traducers claim he was just ‘chopping the head of his life’ without carrying his colleagues along. Sacrilege!

Okonoboh became Speaker July 25 last year after Hon Elisabeth Ativie stepped down as Speaker to balance power equation. She became his deputy and the two of them were booted out last week.

Okonoboh, I learnt, would have lost the position last May but he postponed the resumption of plenary. He was very creative about the whole thing by saying he was effecting repairs in the Assembly complex. He was not lucky last week. Immediately he called for votes and proceeding of the day, the superb lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo II, Emmanuel Agbaje, fished out a paper from his pocket. It turned out to be an impeachment notice.

Okonoboh tried to silence him by shouting: “Sit down, I do not recognise you.” But that was not enough to stop this great actor— sorry lawmaker. Soon the maze was seized. Some other great actors— this word again, I meant to write lawmakers— rushed towards where Okonoboh was sitting and he ordered him to leave.

One of his supporters, Damian Lawan, moved to checkmate them by aiming for the gavel which was later retrieved from him.  Okonoboh was pushed out of the Speaker’s seat by men whose children will always be proud of them for the televised show of shame— sorry, show of bravery.

Okonoboh’s men were not done. After he read the handwriting on the wall and walked away from the seat, one of his supporters, Ezehi Igbas, attempted to stop Gallant Eruaga from sitting on the Speaker’s seat as Protem Pro Speaker. Igbas got the beating of his life from four men of honour and flee.  This will sure make a great script for even Hollywood. I am immensely proud of these guys.

Their gallantry made Okonoboh leave the plenary. Within minutes, Kabiru Adjoto was sworn-in as elected Speaker. To show that these guys are geniuses, they made a former Speaker, Victor Edoror, Deputy Speaker. Edoror was removed as speaker last year over alleged high-handedness, dictatorial tendencies and financial recklessness. His sins have been forgiven.

In the spirit of accountability, Adjoto froze all accounts of the Assembly. He also suspended Okonoboh, Ativie and Foly Ogedengbe, who was Majority Leader. He also ordered the Clerk to seize all official vehicles belonging to them.

Ativie got a letter asking her to return the cars in her possession and she swiftly rushed to her lawyer. The lawyer wrote the clerk and claimed ex-Governor Adams Oshiomhole had given her the official car she used as Speaker for her sacrifice in stepping down for Okonoboh to be Speaker.

There is another heroic act that I must not forget to recall. After plenary, Adjoto and his supporters went to chase Okonoboh out of office. They made sure he did not leave with the official vehicle.

Adjoto gave a speech worthy of winning a Grammy for Spoken Word. I have never seen a  more brilliant  speech before. I certainly will frame it and hang it on the wall of shame – sorry, hall of fame.

Adjoto, who accused Okonoboh of desecrating the Assembly, said: “We came together to say no that the institution is more deserving to be protected than the interest of an individual. The wife has suddenly turned herself to the 25th member of the Edo State House of Assembly. We are 24 members but we were surprised that anything we discussed at the Executive Session, the wife will hear and start calling our wives to tell them what we discussed and they should tell their husbands not to do it.

“The wife uses the Speaker vehicle and convoy as if she is Mr. Speaker. The other day the wife and his son used the convoy to the NYSC camp and all policemen stood at attention for her thinking it was Mr. Speaker. That is desecration of the parliament.

“Mr. Speaker is not supposed to be a contractor but we discovered that he award contracts without due process. We have cautioned him severally. He refused to heed to our advice. We told him he represented an institution and he was our symbol especially with the way he conduct himself publicly.

“He just came back from America where he said he visited eight states whereas he shut down the Assembly. We were not supposed to go for holiday but he shut the House because of his son’s graduation. He stopped us from working for Edo people. We have a government and governor that is working but without parliament no governor can work well. The governor need the suppprt and approval from parliament to function effectively. He is shutting down activities that is detrimental to the running of the state. The governor is working and it is our duty as a parliament to support him.

“16 of us initially signed the impeachment notice. What we need is two third which is 16 members. After we finished, we are now 19 more than the two third requirements.

“They have been suspended for a period of three months to give room for proper investigation of their activities. We need to set a standard for the House. The precedent Okonoboh met, he destroyed it. He is not doing anything to set new things. When you look at him, you think he is somebody who can perform as a medical doctor. He is weak but terribly dangerous.”

My final take: With lawmakers like these, the good days – sorry, dark days– are gone and the light has come to stay in Edo House. There is now hope for the hopeless people. A special variant of democracy has also seen the light. The end will always justify the means. All hail the men of might in the hallowed chamber.

The Oba said he has accepted to take the responsibility and prayed God and the ancestors to grant him the wisdom and good health to do his best to justify the confidence reposed in him.

Oba Ewuare, however, called for the effective utilisation of the nation’s abundant gas resources, instead of flaring it to cause environmental and health hazards for the people.

The Benin Monarch used the opportunity to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari back home and thanked God for his quick recovery.

The Oba said that he would soon embark on a nationwide thank you tour, beginning with a visit to President Buhari in Abuja.

Governor Fayose said he was impressed with the achievements of the Benin Monarch within a few months.

He said, “You are royal and it fits you and some people occupy royal thrones but the seats don’t  fit them. I watched in close quarters your activities and I am impressed.

“Our traditional and culture can’t be wished away. Education, knowledge and wisdom are vital to our human existence. I left office in controversial circumstances on Oct 16 2006 and came back exactly eight years after

“I represent the belief that this country must stay unite in justice as without justice there would be no peace. I want to stay close to this palace and be an asset to it. You are a man of this generation and your support and advice would be invaluable

‎”Traditional rulers are the custodians of our culture and whether we ascribe any role to them on paper or not, they are the closest to the people and have ears to the ground. Those things we politicians in our hurry do not take not off, monarchs have the time and all that is necessary to get them.”

  • More troubles for suspended Isekhure of Benin

More troubles for suspended Isekhure of Benin

The curtains finally fell on the suspended Isekhure of Benin Kingdom, Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, as the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II took possession of the shrines (Ukhure) at Chief Nosakhare residence.

Isekhure of Benin is the custodian of the ancestral spirit staff of the royal family of Benin.

He is the priest responsible only for Erinmwin-Idu, which is the family household deity of the royal family.

Our reporter was informed that the Oba, on behalf of the royal family, owns the shrine of the royal ancestry and that the Ukhure (ancestral spirits staff), which symbolises that ancestry, is kept under the care of the Iseukhure.

The land on which the shrines are located also served as the residence of Chief Isekhure.

Families of Chief Isekhure were thrown into confusion as top palace Chiefs led by Chief Eduwu Ekhator, the Obasogie of Benin Kingdom accompanied by a combined team of policemen stormed the residence along Sakponba road in Benin City.

Chief Isekhure came out of his residence after about two hours but refused them access to the shrines.

He was quoted to have queried the Chiefs on why they stormed his residence with policemen in a traditional matter.

After an argument, Chief Isekhure went back into his residence and locked himself in.

A statue of Chief Isekhure holding the Ukhure in front of his residence was pulled down. All the beautification including bronze artworks were destroyed.

His children and relations were seen cursing and lamenting the action being carried out.

They said a bulldozer should been used to pull down the entire building since the services of Chief Isekhure were no longer needed.

Journalists were barred from taking photographs of the incident which attracted a large crowd while Isekhure was still inside the building as at press time.

One of the Palace Chiefs who spoke on condition of anonymity said the Oba owns the place and only want to take possession of his property.

He said there were reports of plans by Chief Isekhure to tamper with the shrines which prompted the Oba to take what he termed necessary steps.

According to him, “For now he (Chief Isekhure) is completely ostracised. What you can see is part of the process of ostracising him. The real powerhouse, items that belong to the Oba, is here. Information reaching us is some of those things were being tampered with.

“The Oba is the owner of that place. He magnanimously put him there‎ to take custody of the place. He is like the sceptre bearer of the Oba. He (Oba) has asked us to secure the artefacts and possibly make the area formidable so that it cannot be broken.

“The Oba has already asked him to take possession of the extension he (Isekhurhe) built in there. But the original foundation of the palace guild should remain where it is; it is a monumental structure and we have to fortify‎ it because of what it contains.

“I think processes required had been concluded. Nobody ever raises arm against the Oba, even when he (Isekhurhe) was going out of his own way and raising and instrument pursuing some of the chiefs‎.

“He has locked the door saying we cannot go in. But we will get in there in a minute. That is the Oba’s property.”

Oba’s coronation: Suspended Isekhure denies allegation

Suspended Isekhure of Benin, Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, has denied allegations levelled against him by the Benin Traditional Council that he boasted that the Enwinekhua (funeral rites of Oba Erediauwa) and subsequent coronation of Oba Ewuare II could not hold without him.

Chief Nosakhare was last week suspended from performing the duties of the Isekhure title for alleged desecration.

The duties of the Isekhure were reversed to be performed by Chief Ihama, head of the Ihogbe Palace Society.

Chief Nosakhare has also given 14 days to the BTC to prove that he used his residence to review cases already decided by the Palace of the Oba of Benin.

He stated that he would have performed his expected roles during the Emwinekhua and subsequent coronation if her were invited to play the role expected of him.

He spoke through the Ihogbe N’ Ore family in a statement signed by its spokesman, Mr. Osagbakhoe Ogbemudia.

In the statement, the Ihama N’ Ore family said they would allow Chief Isekhure take appropriate legal action to redeem his image at the expiration of the 14 days ultimatum.

“Chief Isekhure is a lover of Benin tradition and custom. How on earth will somebody after getting judgement in the Palace where such a person did not pay a dime would turn to Chief Isekhure for another round of justices where such a person would be forced to pay gratification?

“This is a case of giving a bad name to a dog so that one can have reason to hang such dog. To this end, we demand to see and verify the people that Chief Isekhure demanded money from so that members of the public will be convinced”.

Reacting to the allegation that Chief Isekhure allegedly used his position to collect the kolanuts, monies and drinks to new Chiefs celebrating their investitures, the statement explained that new chiefs are expected to perform some rites as part of their investitures at some designated houses and shrines.

The statement said the rites started as far back as 1255AD during the reign of Oba Ewedo and such visits were accompanied with eight kolanuts, a bottle of hot drink and 13 Shillings and 6 pence now about N2,000.

Other shrine/places visited by new Chiefs according to the statement are Ogbelaka shrine, Ekpenede 1 & 11, Uhuoba shrine, Iyase N’Ohenmwen shrine amongst others.

Benin Monarch tasks Obaseki on campaign promises

The Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, has tasked Governor Godwin Obaseki to fulfill his campaign promises of creating 200,000 jobs for the people.

Oba Ewuare II urged Governor Obaseki to set up cottage industries that would take the youths off the street.

He spoke when Governor Obaseki paid his first official visit to the palace of the Benin Monarch.

Oba Ewuare II said his palace was ready to partner with the state government on the establishment of cluster industries otherwise known as mini industrial parks and called for the setting up of a working committee in conjunction with the palace to actualize the idea.

The Benin Monarch also urged Governor Obaseki to eradicate the menace of Community Development Association across the state.

His words, “May I use this opportunity to seek the state government’s support in eradicating the menace of Community Development Associations in Edo South in particular and Edo state in general. Most of their actions have impeded the development of our communities. For the avoidance of doubt, CDAs are not supposed to be involved in land matters. Community lands as in other matters of the community are under the enigie, odionwere or owhien as the case may be.”

“I have no doubt in my mind that you will deploy all your wealth of experience both in the private sector and in the immediate past administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to effectively utilise the human and material resources in Edo state to take it to greater heights through good governance and provide the good people of Edo state the good dividends of democracy.

“Endeavour to deliver on your campaign promises and attract more federal support and presence particularly my initial appeal to the federal government to transform Gelegele into an Export Processing Zone for agro allied industries.”

Godwin Obaseki on his part called for support from the Benin Kingdom to have a more friendly land administrative system that would be investors friendly and in tune with his administration’s desire for more development for the state.

Obaseki said his administration would ensure a friendly environment to make Edo one of the cleanest states in Nigeria.

He promised to, in the next few weeks, unveil the plans to achieve his promise of creating 200,000  jobs for the people of the state.

“This kingdom used to have the best land tenure system in Nigeria; unfortunately we have lost that pride today. We want to deal with the issue of land properly so that can attract private investment to the state; we need your support to do this.”

  • God answered my prayers to end well – Oshiomhole

God answered my prayers to end well – Oshiomhole

After the death of his wife, Clara, in 2010 following a three years battle with cancer, Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole vowed to build a well-equipped hospital that will end medical tourism in Nigeria. The hospital, according to Oshiomhole, when completed will also be a cancer screening centre where the disease could be diagnosed early.

It was an elated Oshiomhole that on Tuesday declared that God has answered his prayers to finish strong and to finish well. He made the declaration when President Mohammadu Buhari visited the state to inaugurate projects among them a new five-star Central hospital as Oshiomhole promised.

Other projects inaugurated by President Buhari were the dual carriage way Upper Siluko road, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia College formerly New Era College, the 7.3km Ugbegun-Ujiogba-Ebudin-Igueben-Ewohinmi-Ohordua-Emu road that connects five local government in Edo Central senatorial district and the new Edo University, Iyamho in Estako West Local Government.

All the projects executed by Oshiomhole that were inaugurated by President Buhari were projects that critics said were impossible due to dwindling financial resources. For over 15 years, the Upper Siluko road was impassable. Flood sacked over 150 landlords in the area. The ruling Peoples Democratic Party told the people it was impossible to construct the road because of mermaid spirit in the flood. Residents in Egor village and other communities had to pay over N200 to get to the Benin City centre because of the bad road but today they pay only N70 while many landlords have returned to their houses even as economy activities have bounced back.

The Dr. Ogbemudia College was one of the three model secondary schools Governor Oshiomhole promised to build in each of the three senatorial district in 2009. It is equipped with a laboratory, library, a standard hall with floor tiles and PVC ceilings.

Before Oshiomhole constructed the 7.3km Ugbegun-Ujiogba-Ebudin-Igueben-Ewohinmi-Ohordua-Emu road, it was difficult to transverse the five local government areas in Edo Central. The road has reduce travel time within the localities.

The Benin Central hospital which the new five-star hospital now replaces was first built in 1902 with only 10 beds. Successive administration saw the bed space expanded to about 200 but the hospital lacked modern medical facilities including x-ray machine.

Speaking at the inauguration of the hospital, Oshiomhole said the hospital was fitted with the latest technology and that the contract for equipping the hospital was given to a reputable firm. He said the hospital will deliver quality health care in 11 key areas.

According to him, “We demolished a portion of the old hospital built in 1902 and built this new hospital. My own idea is that public health institutions should not be inferior to private health institutions.

“I almost wept when I first visited this hospital. What I found here was shocking and I concluded that even if a healthy man visited the hospital, the healthy would be admitted the next day.”

“This hospital is fitted with the latest technology in health care delivery. This hospital will not be run as public service.

“We will make that effort to work are rewarded and not for those that want to embark on strike.”

On the six-lane Upper Siluko road which was completed with street lights, walkways and underground drains, Governor Oshiomhole said he decided to put resources where it would maximum impact on the lives of the people.

Oshiomhole noted that his administration focused on those things that would deliver the greatest happiness to the greatest number of citizens in the shortest possible time.

“As you can see, this is not a GRA, but this road leads to where the real people are the real forgotten majority. They are the ones we use for census purposes so that we can attract revenue allocation. They are the ones who queue to vote, whether it is raining or it is sunny, without whom we democrats cannot be in office. But oftentimes, when they have finished, they are forgotten until the next four years. We have tried to bond with them by addressing the critical areas of their needs. That informed the choice of this area.

“I am glad that this road has opened up two other local government areas, and it has made life a lot easier. I want to thank the Enogie, I want to thank His Royal Majesty, Omo n’Oba n’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II for his support without which it could have been impossible to do some of the things we had to do.

“I am grateful to Mr President for graciously accepting to come to commission this major project.”

President Buhari who took out time to inspect all the projects described them as very solid and of high quality.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Ugbegun-Ujiogba-Ebudin-Igueben-Ewohinmi-Ohordua-Emu road, President Buhari said Oshiomhole had shown the importance of rural roads to the economic and security lives of the people.

Buhari said he ask Oshiomhole who owned the central hospital edifice when he first saw it without knowing it was the project he was coming to inaugurate.

He said: “the quality of the projects I was made to commission, are very, very solid, whether it’s the roads, the educational institutions or the hospital.  Certainly, Governor Oshiomhole is lucky to last his two terms and to engrave his name in a golden historical plate.

“I believe the roads and the bridges will bring more people to live more comfortably and securely. He has done for well for the people. He built a good hospital, again he served the people.

“I congratulate the incoming Governor, I thank him for his stamina going through the primaries and going through the elections and importantly, winning it.

“We believe this system, the multi-party democracy system is the best for us. We are doing best because we found ourselves as part of this great country called Nigeria. We are blessed with human and material resources. We made a terrible mistake in allowing ourselves to be cornered into a mono-economy and we are now paying dearly for our mistake.

“Now we have to go back to the land, solid minerals and do a lot of savings so that we can leave a lot of savings for our children and grandchildren.

“I very much congratulate the Governor, he has shown a lot of foresight by the quality of infrastructure he has put on the ground. May God reward him abundantly.

“I stand here to congratulate Adams Oshiomhole for his foresight, for his hard work and for his personal integrity. I hope when he successfully hands over, he will take some leave away from the local problems maybe for a couple of months, before he comes back to square one.”
