    •Monarch named Senior Peace Advocate

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111, has been named a Senior Advocate of Peace by the Peace Corps of Nigeria.

He was honoured at the Mid-Town East One, United Nations Plaza, New York.

The award is in appreciation of his contributions to peace and conflict resolution in Yorubaland and Nigeria.

The organisers described the Alaafin as “a prolific writer and thinker, who has contributed extensively to the progress of his people at home and in the Diaspora”.

They said the monarch is one of the most prolific writers of our time, having written books and articles on local governments, tradition and custom, national unity and international peace.

The organisers said: “All these treatises earned the Alaafin the award and the accolade of being a serious-minded scholar and internationally-acclaimed leader of thought, a man of excellence, who should be celebrated. To mention a few of his contributions to peace in Nigeria, the Alaafin, through rare wisdom and intellectual sagacity, resolved over two decades of bloody clashes between Igboho and Kisi, as well as boundary disputes between Igbojaiye in Itesiwaju Local Government Area and Ofiki in Atisbo Local Government Area of Oyo State over ownership of the mineral mining site at Budo-Are.

“The Alaafin made decisive incursions into the history of these warring communities and made his summations based on historical artifacts. The crises were amicably resolved without prejudice.”

The Yoruba community cheered as the Alaafin was decorated.

Oba Adeyemi thanked the organisers for the award.

He said the Oyo Empire lasted 600 years uninterrupted due to the various Alaafins’ peace and conflict resolution diplomacy.

Oba Adeyemi said: “The essence of this award is peace. Peace originates as an occurrence of harmony characterised by lack of violence. It also suggests sincere attempts at reconciliation, the existence of healthy or newly healed interpersonal relationships.

“Alaafin is an embodiment of peace, either in peace time or during warfare in Yorubaland. In diplomacy, art of government and royal court etiquette, the palace became the state house of the Yoruba nations, the citadel of authentic African culture, where Yoruba princes and princesses and heirs apparent from other Yoruba states are groomed in the intrinsic values of Yoruba customary usage, hence the Yoruba saying ‘ajise bi Oyo laa ri, Oyo o se bi baba enikan’ (Oyo is a pace setter). Oyo’s sense of due process is also remarkably noted in the popular saying ‘itose lo l’oyo’.

“Peace and justice are Siamese twins, so as we clamour for peace, we must also cry for justice, equal right, good governance, egalitarianism and a life that is more abundant.”

The Alaafin, who was accompanied by his son, Prince Adeniyi, was received by the representative of Nigeria’s Ambassador to the U.S., Prof. Ade Adefuye, on arriving at the venue.                  .

He was later treated to a colourful reception by the Yoruba community.

My role in Ladoja’s impeachment, by Alaafin

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111, has opened up on his involvement in the impeachment of former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja.

Oba Adeyemi said were it not for arrogance, disregard for elders and the traditional institution, Ladoja would have completed his four-year term.

He spoke at Ojude Aremo in Oyo town on Sunday at the Fourth Fidau and Lecture in memory of Pa AbdulAzeez Akewugberu.

Pa Akewugberu was the father of the former Chairman of the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Taofeek Akewugberu.

The ruler narrated how the then President Olusegun Obasanjo contacted him and the Aare-Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji AbdulAzeez Arisekola-Alao, on his intention to impeach Ladoja.

He said: “Initially, when the former President made his intention known, Aare and I were unhappy. Despite all odds, we were sympathetic to Ladoja’s cause. We passionately appealed to Obasanjo to forgive Ladoja.

The Alaafin said while this lasted, Ladoja continued to be arrogant and unremorseful, adding: “Consequently, Obasanjo became more enraged and stood his ground that Ladola must go. You know Obasanjo; he is like a moving train ready to crush anyone who attempts to obstruct his plan or decision. We were all living witnesses to what he (Obasanjo) did to Aare-Musulumi. So, we set the ball rolling, though reluctant, by thinking of those who will constitute the panel.”

Oba Adeyemi said when the names of the panel members were being compiled; there were no charges to be preferred against Ladoja.

He said: “I single-handedly drafted the three charges preferred against the former governor. They include unspent N100 million budgetary allocation to the State Council of Obas and Chiefs, which the former governor unilaterally and unconstitutionally dissolved barely five months after the budget approval.

“Also, he was charged with illegal dissolution of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs without recourse to either the Chairman of the Council or the House of Assembly.

“The third charge was unlawful de-centralisation of the Council of Obas and Chiefs into zones. He was found guilty by the panel and the report submitted to the Assembly, which resulted in his removal from office.”

The Alaafin condemned what he called the erroneous impression that he is fond of supporting governors at the beginning of their tenures and quarreling with them towards the end.

He said: “The Alaafin, as an institution and his dynasty, always anchors his principle on good governance, equity, fairness and social justice for all. Anyone in position of authority, who is shirking in his or her responsibility to the people that gave out their mandate through election (s) on trust, must be ready to face the Alaafin’s wrath.”

In his sermon, renowned Islamic scholar, Sheik Muyideen Ajani Bello, described the Alaafin as an “unequalled ruler, whose uncompromising and unrepentant penchant for justice and honesty of purpose transcends religious or ethnic cubicle”.

Extolling the virtues of the late Pa Akewugberu, he urged the people to emulate the deceased’s resilience, devotion and good neighbourliness.

Alaafin seeks honour for past heroes

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111, has stated that until leaders learn to genuinely appreciate, reward and honour those whose invaluable contributions sustain the nation, true peace, harmony and progress will remain elusive.

Adeyemi stated this in his palace yesterday when members of the anniversary and fund-raising committee for the Nigerian legionnaires Oyo State chapter paid him a courtesy visit.

The paramount ruler noted that most nationals from developed countries of the world are so patriotic and nationalistic enough to lay down their lives for their countries because they are treated well.

According to him: ‘’Citizens of developed countries are treated as human beings with self-respect and dignity whose needs and interests must be jealously protected.

“As a result, criminality and the culture of sabotage are significantly reduced compared to our country Nigeria. Our own citizens are not criminals but very diligent, dynamic and enterprising.

“But in situations whereby our citizens are denied their inalienable rights glaringly and the society shows little interest in their welfare and feelings, they cannot but become a rabble.‘’

Describing annual remembrances of fallen military personnel who gallantly fought the civil wars to ensure the continued existence of the country as mere cosmetic, Alaafin wondered why the exercise should be limited to cenotaphs and decorations with flowers without any means of immortalisation and befitting provisions for the well-beings of their families.

‘’The independence we are enjoying in the country today did not come by chance; some people worked assiduously and sweated profusely for its attainment.

“They must have inventory in a special museum that should be created at federal, state and local government levels.

“Their marvelous contributions to the emergence of the entity must be on marble, as well as serve historical antecedents for future posterity.”
