New judge takes over Oba of Benin’s, Dukes’ suit

A suit filed in 2023 by two suspended Enigie (Dukes) of Evbuobanosa and Egbaen Siluko Dukedoms in Benin Kingdom, Prof. Gregory Akenzua and Chief Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen, on behalf of others, to challenge their 2023 suspension by Benin Traditional Council (BTC), has been assigned to a new judge, Justice Mary Asemota, who is beginning the matter afresh.

The Dukes had sued Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.

The first-class monarch was not at the crowded Edo High Court 6 on Sapele Road, Benin yesterday, just as it happened at the last sitting on May 9, 2024.

But security was again very tight yesterday, as accessing the court was a tug of war. Many lawyers, litigants and reporters were prevented by the fully-armed and overzealous security operatives at the main gate from gaining entrance to the court complex, despite the downpour.

Thousands of members of BTC, royal family, chiefs, traditional priests and priestesses, as well as other indigenes of Benin kingdom, in red and white attires, stormed the court complex in solidarity with the Oba of Benin.

The suit, with reference number B/290os/23, which was number 3 on the court’s civil cause list, was mentioned, and the matter was adjourned till October 17.
