    OAU probes 300-level medical student’s death in hostel

    The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has launched a probe into the circumstances of death of 18-year-old, 300 level student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery,

    Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, who reportedly died in his sleep in the early hours of yesterday.

    The Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement said the university received with shock, and sorrow the news of the sudden death of Timilehin.

    Olarewaju said Timilehin with Matriculation Number CLI/2022/133 might have died around 2am because one of his room mates said he opened the door for one of them at that time.

    He said: “The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, on behalf of the Visitor, the University Council, Management, Senate, staff, and students of the University, expresses heartfelt and unreserved condolences to the bereaved family, classmates, colleagues, and friends of the deceased.

    “The loss of a young life filled with promise, purpose, and potential is a tragedy that words alone cannot adequately capture.”

    Describing the incident as deeply painful and distressing, Prof. Bamire notes that the entire University community is united in grief over the untimely departure of a student who had embraced the rigours of medical training with the hope of, one day, healing others and serving humanity. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his peers and all who knew him.

    He added: “The University Management assures the public that it is working closely with relevant authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident, in line with established medical procedures.

    “At this moment of collective mourning, we University calls on students, staff, alumni, and friends of the institution to remain calm, compassionate, and prayerful, and to uphold the values of empathy and solidarity for which the Great Ife is renowned.

    “As a community of faith, hope and learning, we commit the soul of our departed student into the hands of Almighty God, the giver and sustainer of life. We pray that the Lord, who comforts those who mourn, will grant his family and all of us the strength to bear this irreparable loss.’’

    Students kick as OAU sets rustication for kissing, heavy makeup, indecent dressing, others

    The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State has outlawed hugging, kissing, heavy makeup and indecent dressing on the campus of the institution.

    The institution approved the proposal for the review of dress code for students, which was drafted by the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) in May 2023 after it was perused by the Legal Review Committee of the institution.

    The review prescribed one semester rustication for sexually provocative dresses, backless clothes, transparent wears, off-shoulder clothes, bomb shorts, tattered jeans, dreadlocks, faring for male/cowries for female, micro/mini/skimpy dress, sagging for male/female and hair braiding for male.

    Also, one semester rustication was set for nose, mouth, eye, extra rings, unconventional wearing of face cap, tattoo/indelible markings for male, crop/jump tops, multi-coloured braid for female, haircuts with inscriptions, T-shirts with obscene inscriptions depicting immorality, hooliganism, etc., heavy make-ups, rumpled and dirty clothes and hair plaiting or weaving by male students.

    It was noted that any student found guilty of violation of coloured hair styles, hair braiding for male, spangled hair style for male, unwelcome touching, kissing and hugging of opposite sex and massaging or sitting on the lap opposite sex in the university risks rustication for two semesters.

    A memo with reference number R/DCA/C/ lB/XVI/12/266 dated June 13, 2025, which was signed by the Registrar of the institution, K. A. Bakare, approved the review.

    The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State has outlawed hugging, kissing, heavy makeup and indecent dressing on the campus forthwith.

    The memo reads “Council received and considered Paper No. 5659, which contained the proposal for the Review of the Dress Code for Students of the University. Council noted that the paper had passed through the due process of review by the appropriate organs of the University.

    “After due deliberation, Council APPROVED the reviewed Dress Code for Students of the University as presented.”

    But students through its Union leaders in a statement co-signed by the President-elect, Oluwatodimu Adelani, Secretary General, Oke 

    Habeeb and PRO, Olowosile Oreoluwa kicked against the review. 

    They opposed the consideration of the dress code policy, stressing that they will protect their rights as the sanctions are too harsh and infringe on freedom of expression as guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution. 

    According to them: “OAU campus is a place of learning, and the introduction of sanctions such as rustication for one or two semesters for perceived misconducts stifles and violates students’ fundamental rights to freedom of expression, personal style, and individuality. It also undermines the right to personal liberty as enshrined in Section 35 CFRN, and may infringe on Section 37, which protects the privacy of citizens, including how they choose to present themselves.

    “We hereby call on the management to, just like it did in 2023, totally distance itself from these punitive measures that we find archaic and detrimental to the learning process.”

    The tasked all students to stand in unity against any measures that seek to undermine their rights.

    A yet-to-be named student of Centre for Distance Learning (CDL), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, lost his life after electrocution while attempting to retrieve football from an unknown compound.

    The student was playing football with his colleagues at his hostel when the incident happened at Ife Expressway, Moro.

    A source said the boy played the ball and it entered into a compound and he volunteered to scale the fence to pick it up.

    “He had picked the ball but unknowing to him that rainfall had exposed a naked wire at the place he wanted to climb up from, he got electrocuted and was rushed to Catholic hospital at Ipetumodu where he was confirmed dead.”

    The institution’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju confirmed the incident on Sunday.

    He explained: “It is unfortunate that we recorded an incident that was not too palatable yesterday where we lost a prominent youngster. One of our CDL students who was aspiring to come to the university after the completion of the programme.

    “Report had it that they were playing football in the evening and the ball fell into a compound that was fenced and unknown to the young boy, he jumped into the fence because he was the one that played the ball into the compound and it was a rule that anybody who played the ball into the compound will go to retrieve it.”

    He added: “In compliance with the rule, the boy went in there and we were told that that was the first time the boy would play with them. So, he went in there, retrieved the ball, and threw it out to his colleagues, but when he wanted to come out, he climbed the fence but unknowingly put his hand in a life wire and got electrocuted.

    OAU union protests 2022 withheld salaries, shortage of workers

    Members of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State branch, yesterday protested non-payment of their withheld salaries and areas of academic allowances by the Federal Government.

    The protesters converged on the front of the university bookshop, carrying a banner to express their grievances. They said Federal Government reneged on their 2009 agreement.

    The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “We Say No To Unfair Treatment”, ‘’Broken Promise, Broken Trust, Respect Our 2009 Agreement”, “We Deserve Better”,  “Pay Our Withheld Salaries.”

    Addressing reporters, the Chairman, Comrade Mathew Oluwaniyi, said the salaries of members of the union were withheld by the Federal Government for going on strike for five and a half months in 2022.

    Oluwaniyi, represented by his deputy, Aminu Rotimi, said members only received one month of the withheld salaries last month by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

    He said: “We are here to show our grievances with the Federal Government on the way our union is being treated. In 2022, the university-based unions went on strike. Our union was on strike for five and a half months, and the Federal Government withheld our salary for those months.

    “Last week, we received alert of what looks like the payment of one of our five and a half months withheld salaries, and up till now, the Federal Government has not communicated with us.’’

    Former secretary of the union in OAU, Dr Taoreed Adesiyan, lamented shortage of workers in university laboratories across the country.”

    OAU agog for foremost historian, Oyeweso over appointment as council chair

    The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State was on Saturday agog for Professor Siyan Oyeweso as the academic and alumni community celebrated the foremost historian as the new Chairman of the governing council of the institution.

    The event which was held at the International Conference Centre was organized by the 1978 alumni set of the Institution to which he belongs.

    Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Professor Simeon Banire, extolled Oyeweso noting that his proven leadership skills and understanding of managing large academic establishments earned him the appointment.

    Responding to goodwill messages, Professor Oyeweso expressed deep gratitude to the organizers for the honor bestowed upon him. He described his appointment as an act of divine providence and a call to service, reaffirming his commitment to advancing the university’s mission.

    OAU ’97 accounting graduates give back to alma mater

    The Accounting graduates, 1997 class of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have donated some items to the institution.

    This is part of the activities marking the silver jubilee graduation celebrations of the 1997 set.

    The ex-students donated multiplex photocopying machines, multimedia projectors with screens, mobile public address systems, and 1.5hp spit air conditioning units as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility project (CSR) to their former department.

    A team made up of the President Jeremiah Adeyemi; General Secretary  Najeem Ajani;  Director of Impact Projects and Welfare Mutiu Olayiwola; Asst. General Secretary Bunmi Olowonyo; Financial Secretary Eunice Okunlola, and other members, visited the university to hand over learning aids to the Department of Management and Accounting of the school.

    Adeyemi said the items donated to the department symbolised their appreciation of the work the department did in shaping them into responsible adults in the society.

  • OAU student commits suicide over poor academic performance

    A student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Grace Dara Opeyemi, at the weekend committed suicide over poor academic performance.

    The student in the Department of English Studies was said to have exercised the fear that she might not graduate alongside her mates for alleged poor performance in the university’s final year exams last semester.

    According to her mate, who preferred anonymity, the deceased died after taking a dose of snipper on Friday.

    “From a copy of the academic records on the university portal it showed that she had five outstanding courses and special electives as carry over and was unable to write the final exams with her mates in the last semester,” the source said.

    Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident but said he was yet to be briefed about it.

    However, he said got to know about the a female student of the university died of depression after taking a dose of a lethal substance known as Snipers because of her poor academic performance.

    Olarewaju added that after the discovery that the deceased had taken the deadly substance, she was rushed to the university’s health centre and was later referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital where she reportedly died.

    Promising that the university would investigate the incident, he cautioned other students not to see suicide as an option from challenges.

He later featured in a movie titled ‘Orisun’ (meaning: Origin) produced by members of staff of Obafemi Awolowo University, but his first appearance on television was in 2003 in an MTN Group television commercial titled “Dance with me”.
