Gitex Nigeria: Lagos ready to host the world, says Hamzat

Lagos State deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has expressed the government’s readiness to host the GITEX Nigeria conference in September 2025.

He said the government and indeed the entire technology ecosystem would be very receptive to the coming of the global tech show to the country, ‘especially Lagos, where tech and innovation have found a good ground in Africa’.

Hamzat spoke during a meeting with Trixie LohMirmand, the Chief Executive Officer of Kaoun International, in the Lagos Pavilion at the ongoing GITEX 2024 in Dubai, UAE.

“There could not have been a better time for the tech world to make its presence felt in Africa, particularly Nigeria, than now when the country is experiencing an upsurge in the growth of technology and innovation talent”, Hamzat noted.

According to him, the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is deliberate in its decision to make technology the driving force behind more of the state’s development programmes.

He said: “Lagos, for example, holds the ‘Art of Technology (AoT) conference which is now in its fifth year. With the AoT, a lot of young entrepreneurs in the IT and innovation space have been discovered, and many of them now run as businesses, with its attendant effect on our economy and the entire ecosystem.

“Another great thing that we’ve discovered is that the number of young entrepreneurs in Lagos State is unbelievable. And, like you said, we can’t bring everybody here to Dubai. So, bringing GITEX to Lagos is very good; it will allow even other countries to see what is possible because the news that we get out there is not real.”

The deputy governor added that the young innovators in Lagos are already creating real solutions, saying their creations are solving real-life problems and are helping their immediate families, friends, and communities.

“There are 10 and 12-year-olds and all they do is coding because they want to help their parents sell their products and services. We are therefore more than happy to host an event of this nature that would help to connect these talents that we have in abundance to the countless opportunities out here.

“We have pockets of knowledge in our state. The question for us is how do we explain it, how do we actually make it out there, and then allow people to benefit? The creators also need to benefit from their thinking. So, my hope is that GITEX Nigeria can do that for us when you are able to bring all these young people from different areas.

“I know it is technology, but how do we take it to entertainment? Entertainment is big in Nigeria; the creative industry is the next oil as far as we are concerned, and that is why we are investing heavily in that sector,” Hamzat said.

LohMirmand said: “Technology is a necessity and not a luxury, and the world needs it for survival.”

According to her, the last time she visited Nigeria, she and her team saw young Nigerians who ‘sat in a small room with systems on their laps doing great things’.

LohMirmand, whose company organises GITEX Global, said they are committed to discovering new partners and connecting Nigeria to untapped opportunities in the technology space.

She said: “That is our role. We will need a lot of support from your government in terms of logistics and security for us to organise a good show in Lagos, Nigeria.”

GITEX, the biggest technology showpiece in the world, connects people with industry leaders from big tech, global governments, innovative startups, expert investors, and corporate buyers. It is a computer expo held annually at the Dubai World Trade Center in the United Arab Emirates.

The event underpins the rapid technology-driven transformations, investments, and projects shaping the economies of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Hamzat: Tinubu’s surgical operation on economy will bear fruits

Lagos state deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat recently celebrated his 60th birthday in Lagos, where he spoke on the need for Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his efforts to reposition the country for excellence.

At 60, boyish-looking Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat has great cause to thank God for existence and survival. As deputy governor of Lagos State, life goes on for the prince, technocrat, politician, and administrator, who is held in esteem by peers, his party elders, and his boss, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

When Hamzat rolled out the drums a few weeks ago to celebrate six decades of his earthly sojourn, the who-is-who in the society turned up to honour him. Most top chieftains of the ruling party witnessed the ceremony, and the few who could not make it sent their regrets.

The multi-purpose hall of the Lagos Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja was filled to the brim.

The government House and state secretariat were temporarily relocated to the premises. Guests were led by the governor, who eulogised his deputy as a worthy, competent, loyal, and trustworthy partner, who has served the state with diligence.

“For five years, we have been inseparable like Aki and Pawpaw; I testify to the glory of God in his life, said Sanwo-Olu, who described Hamzat as a brother, friend, and partner in progress, whose trust and confidence he has enjoyed as captain of the ship. Exuding happiness, the governor added: “That thing you are asking for, God will do it for you. You will live long in good health and sound mind.”

Sanwo-Olu traced their acquaintances to the Tinubu years in Lagos when they both served as commissioners.

He recalled the bond of unity and period of hard work, vigilance, diligence, and meticulous duty, saying: “If memo did not pass through us, you needed to come and see us at the back”

The governor said the joint involvement facilitated their adjustment when fate brought them together in government, adding that their relationship has not been characterised by differences and disagreement. “This is an example of what humility is; an example of unity and harmony,” he added.

Thanking Hamzat for leadership, partnership and sense of purpose, Sanwo-Olu said: “My colleagues tell me that they have not seen an intelligent deputy governor like him; a man of dignity and pride.”

It was a modest occasion; a blend of interdenominational thanksgiving service and lectures by reputable scholars from the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo. At the ceremony, the synergy between Muslim and Christian leaders symbolised religious harmony in a state reputed for its religious and ethnic diversity.

Accompanied by his delectable wife, Remi, and promising children, the celebrator was resplendent in his flowing agbada, beaming infectious smiles and radiating the joy of accomplishments.

At the event were the gerontocrats, who were contemporaries of Hamzat’s father in politics and Governance Advisory Council (GAC) – Prince Oluyole Olusi, Otunba Gbelegbuwa Busura Alebiosu, Baba Aladura Olorunfunmi Basorun and the Apase of Epe, Chief Shakiru Akanni Bamu.

Other dignitaries included First Lady Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Chief Justice Olarewaju Alogba, sheikh Muyideen Bello, House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Lagos white cap chiefs, who represented Eleko Rilwan Akiolu; Senator Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun, former Deputy Governor Sarah, Sosan, industrialist Chief Rasak Okoya and wife, Dr. Folasade, Otunba Lateef Olufemi Pedro, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Kolade Alabi, Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde, Ogun State Deputy Governor Salako Oyedele, Tunde Alade Balogun, House of Representatives members James Faleke, Katilat Ogbara,, Wale Hameed and Lanre Oshun;  Senator Ganiyu Solomon, Abiodun Mafe, Iyaloja of Lagos Chief Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, Information and Strategy Vommissioner Gbenga Omotoso, former Industry Minister Mrs. Onikepo Akande, Sola Giwa, retired Police Assistant Inspector-General Hakeem Odumosu, Jide Obanikoro, Admiral Jibril Ayinla, Bayo Ajisebutu, Pa Rotinwa, Mrs. Emmanuela Fashola, Rasak Ajala, Dr. Muiz Banire, Sesan Daini, and Jelili Animasahun.

Other family friends and old school mates from Baptist Olivet, Oyo and the great grandmother University of Ibadan were in a joyous mood.

The programme of event was loaded. In the booklet were tributes from eminent Nigerians who testified to the celebrator’s worth and feats as an accomplished public servant.

Leading the officiating Muslim clerics at the event was the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaiman Abu-Nollah. The Christian priests were led by the chairman of Lagos State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rt. Rev. Stephen Adegbite. There were readings ftom the Quran, words of exhortation by the Sheiks-Sulaimon Faruq Onikijipa, Ustaz Abfulhakeen Lawal and Pastor Femi Faseru of KICC, Maryland, Ikeja.

Lectures were given by Dr. SheikhAbdulRahman Lawal on “Rearing our children with the fear of Allah: and by Dr. Sheikk Zaheed Timehin on “Showing gratitude to Allah in relation to our communal interaction.”

Special prayers were offered for the governor, deputy governor and his family, members of the State Executive Council, the House of Assembly, the Judiciary and the people of Lagos.

Ustaz Lawal described the birthday as a moment of thanksgiving, reflection and assessment. Turning to the deputy governor, he said: “You got to 60 through the mercy of God. Forgive those who have wronged you. Dont forget your parents. Pray for them.”

Adegbite, who thanked God for the governor “and the peace we enjoy in Lagos,” congratulated Hamzat, saying: “60 is diamond. Gold is forever.”

The priest hailed the deputy governor as a product of a great background and applauded his sense of friendliness, humility and tenderness, nothing that, not only was he was born by a good father, he has also developed good character.

Echoing him, Alhaja Maryam Bisi, who spoke on behalf of the family, described Hamzat as a kind and compassionate person, stressing that he is very nice to the extended family.

Faseru paid tribute to KOH, “a successful father, husband, and leader, who has achieved so much through the grace of God.” He urged him to lift up people “for stretch.”

“Don’t wine down at 60. Refine, and re-engage. It is not yet time to relax,” he added.

All those who work in the Office of Deputy Governor also came with messages that validated the evidence of good traits. They were decked in a uniform attire befitting the occasion, dancing and singing. They described their boss as a God-fearing man; noble, humble; a good listener, and a man who has a knack for details and “works with data, which helps in decision making.”

Timehin, who held the audience captive with his lecture, stressed the value of thanksgiving, saying that “only those who know God can thank God.”

He stressed: “Life is full of ups and downs. Thanksgiving through casual speech and Thanksgiving through comprehensive behaviour is good. Hamzat has to thank God. How many blessings of God can he deny?

“Thanksgiving entails the extension of a duty of care to the needy in the society. In every position you are in, you have to thank God. The poor man sees the madman and thanks God. The madman sees the corpse and thanks God.”

The Lagos State University teacher urged Hamzat to always thank God for his father, who taught him courage, wisdom, and hard work. “You need to thank God for survival and excelling among your peers,” he added.

To the audience, Timehin said: “Learn to give thanks always.”

Lawal’s lecture on child rearing with the fear of Allah was inspiring. He drew attention to the “G-Z,” which he described as a dangerous breed that deserves special nurturing. Alluding to the Quran, he said parents should nurture their children based on Islamic teachings.

He added: “If they are not well brought up, outsiders who do not love them like us will snatch them from us. They deserve special care at adolescence.”

In Lawal’s view, parents should be role models. He lamented the eclipse of communal parenting. He said children should be brought up to respect elders.

The university don said breastfeeding is important and mothers should not shy away from it. He called for the inclusion of moral and religious studies into the curriculum.

Lawal said the teaching of etiquette to children, particularly dressing, manner of speech and walking, and how girls should sit, is also important.

“Children should be trained not to tell lies. It can lead to perdition,” he warned.

The events brought a lot of people who had not seen for a long time. For the old students of Hamzat’s alma mater, it was a reunion of sorts.

There was much to eat and drink. An Islamic musician took the stage. Many milled around the top table for handshakes. Overwhelmed with joy, tributes, huggings, patting at the back, and photo sessions, the celebrator and celebrants nearly forgot to cut the birthday cake.

An elated Hamzat thanked God for His goodness and mercies. He thanked his wife, Remi, who is like a shock absorber. He praised Sanwo-Olu for his dedication, thoroughness, and passion for service delivery, saying: “Governor says we must do the Fourth Mainland Bridge. I said where the money would come from. He replied that we must look for it by all means. I thank him for his passion. Lagos is the first to have a city rail.”

Hamzat also thanked Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, a distinguished medical doctor and first lady, for her passion for the state.

The deputy governor reflected on the state of the nation. “Governance is hard. It is not easy to rule,” he said. Therefore, he urged Nigerians to pray for the success of the Bola Tinubu administration in its efforts to reposition the country.

“Nigeria has broken its knees. Asiwaju is doing a surgical operation. Asiwaju Tinubu is well known for his capability. We pray to God to enable him fix the country,” he said.

Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and celebration of diamond jubilee, by Olumuyiwa Jimoh

Leaders demonstrate a high sense of connectedness with the society as they have great and deep understanding of the relevance of power and that it becomes useless if it is not deployed in serving the people.

Service to the people they believe can only be seen and expressed in the degree to which the proclivities of power manifestations become instrumental to impacting positively, the lives of the citizenry.

In essence governance can only be relevant to the extent to which it has touched the lives of the people and the community.

It is in these dimensions that we have come to analyse His Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State; Dr.Obafemi Kadiri Hamzat who was born in Mushin Bestridden the seat of Government in Lagos State as Deputy Governor of the State.

Governance benefits to the people that he governs. He has remained a Symbol of pride to those who stuck out their necks in support of his leadership in the State from conception and as he marks his Diamond of existence on mother earth, his grade A performance has not waned rather, it is gaining increasing momentum.

The struggle and the political ferment that led to his emergence as the Deputy Governor of our great State is still very fresh in the minds of political Insiders. Despite all the fears and trepidation in the hearts of those who He has demonstrated completely for everyone to see that he has pledged his life and honour to the service of the people of Lagos state.

It is a belief that is borne out of the understanding that when every Nigerian plays his own role effectively, a critical mass of greatness will be built that would generate the needed momentum for national renaissance.

His leadership motive therefore is not limited to the con3nes of Lagos state but has an innate pursuit of contributing to a Nigeria that is able to deliver justice and welfare to her people and a greater world that would provide equal access to global resources to all peoples of the world.

I have watched with admiration and awe the continued transformation of Lagos State under the dexterous hands of our Governor and Deputy Governor, Our Governmental processes are becoming compliant with global standards while various institutions of Governance are being strengthened.

He is in fact creating a State that would outlive and contend with its contemporaries as he leaves his imprints in everything that he has touched thus far.

His marks are indelible, succeeded in turning Governance into a symbol of hope and not of despair that many other leaders have come to foist on the citizens of other climes since the inception of this democratic experiment.

There is no facet of the State’s economy that has escaped his transformative touch.

He has always demonstrated his acute realisation that Governance is a team work. The enthronement of a smooth interface between the Executive which he leads and the State Legislature where some of us belong is a conscious effort to create a functional, effective but Constructive democratic governance that would produce the best result possible for the benefit of the majority of the people of the State.

Where other governors have attempted to meddle with the activities of the State legislature within their statTes, he believes otherwise. This has given the legislature an unfettered opportunity to be creative in their functions thus providing the State and Governor one of the most effective Laws and

He has encouraged free choices and abhorred all decisions which has helped to make the party more cohesive and vibrant in the State than ever.

    • Lagosians opt for dialogue as govt opens new channel of communication

Lagos State Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat has said the state government would continue to engage, interact and communicate with the youth, believing this would enable them to collaborate and partner with the government in achieving the set desired goals and programmes.

Speaking today on Arise TV Programme, “The Morning Show”, Dr. Hamzat said the state government has been engaging youths across different sectors to get them involved in how things are done and run in the country.

He said Lagos is committed to providing youths with ‘cutting-edge’ facilities and technology, thereby empowering them to reach their full potential, including the desire to drive innovation and growth.

The deputy governor highlighted some of the initiatives the current administration has put in place to ensure youths are engaged, unleashing their potential for prosperity.

He noted that some of the youth are being sponsored to countries to see how things are done.

Speaking further, Hamzat said the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration would be remembered for laudable projects it had embarked upon, which would be a legacy of the administration. The deputy governor reeled some of them out, including road infrastructure, agriculture and food security, and transportation comprising the three major means of transportation, namely: road, water and rail, among other projects.

Hamzat said there was no local government in Lagos where the current administration was not doing tangible projects on a regular basis.

He said Lagos is the only sub-sovereign in the world to build rail on its balance sheet, adding: “We think we cannot be a metropolitan state without a rail, and finishing the blue and red line is our target. Let us be able to move our people conveniently”.

He, therefore, encouraged the private sector to participate in the projects the state government is doing, that are aimed at developing the state economy, saying, “now we have moved from conveying 70,000 people per month to about 288,00 people. We are also building jetties among others”.

Speaking further, he stressed the state’s commitment to enhancing local agricultural production, which will foster economic growth, address food price inflation and promote food security.

Lagosians have chosen dialogue, going by the huge response to the state government’s introduction of three telephone lines on which residents can interact with officials. The numbers are for Ministry of Youth & Social Development (+2347077178295), Information and Strategy (+2348119655788) and the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (+2348025224347).

Within 24 hours of unveiling the telephone numbers, an average of 200 calls were received by each ministry. Callers acknowledged the peace that existed during the recent protest and urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to sustain the programmes put in place to reduce the present economic burden on Lagosians.

Top on the list of requests is the return of “Ounje Eko” Sunday market across Lagos State; the 25% rebate on fares paid on all state transportation platforms and concessions in the health sector.

A resident said; “Please, we are asking Governor Sanwo-Olu to return the discount on BRT bus fares. A trip from Ipaja BRT, which was reduced from N800 to N600, is back to N800, but we will appreciate if the governor directs the BRT operators to take it down again. This will help us reduce our daily cost of transportation”

Ayomide Olarinmoye, a student from Ekiti State University, inquired about accessing federal student loans. Nkechi Ajubike highlighted hunger and suggested a temporary subsidy for six months to alleviate economic hardship.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso said: “This is the way it should be. This is Lagos. We will always choose dialogue above violence, which is never our way.’’

Speaking further on the government’s initiatives, the commissioner maintained that the Sanwo-Olu administration would continue to empower youths and students by providing training and equipment to those who opt to become entrepreneurs.

“The ongoing engagement with youths is expected to bridge the gap between the youth population and foster a collaborative approach to governance,” Omotoso said.
