PDP members urge court to disqualify Obanikoro

Three members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have urged the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja to disqualify a former defence minister Musiliu Obanikoro from seeking governorship nomination in the party’s primaries.

They said having previously presented a forged birth certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the April 2007 election, Obanikoro is ineligible to present himself for nomination.

According to them, official records, such as his Nigerian and diplomatic passports, show that Obanikoro was born on July 28, 1960, but he allegedly falsified it to July 28, 1954.

Besides, the applicants said Obanikoro also allegedly lied in 2007 when he failed to disclose to INEC that he has dual citizenship.

They prayed the court to determine whether, having voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America in addition to that of Nigeria without renouncing the former and declaring allegiance to the latter, Obanikoro is eligible to seek nomination.

The plaintiffs – Michael Ogunsuada, Suleiman Saheed and Wasiu Odusan – are seeking a declaration that Obanikoro stands disqualified from aspiring for nomination in PDP’s governorship primaries or that of any other party for the purposes of contesting either in next year’s election or subsequent polls by virtue of his antecedents.

They prayed for an order of perpetual injunction restraining him from participating in PDP’s governorship primaries scheduled for December 8.

They also sought an order restraining the party from nominating Obanikoro to INEC to contest next year’s governorship election in Lagos or any other election in Nigeria.

The plaintiffs, who joined Obanikoro, INEC and PDP as respondents, further sought a restraining order against INEC from accepting Obanikoro’s nomination by PDP for any election.

In a supporting affidavit filed on November 14, Ogunsuada said he is a loyal party man who is determined to ensure that only a high quality candidate and person of character and competence who fulfils all constitutional requirements is nominated.

“I am likely to be gravely prejudiced if the aspiration for nomination of the first respondent (Obanikoro) as a candidate in the primaries of the third respondent (PDP) is not restrained considering his shady antecedents…,” the deponent said.

The applicants lawyers also filed an affidavit of urgency praying that the application be heard quickly as PDP’s screening exercise will hold between November 22 and 25.

They stated that if the suit is not heard and determined urgently, Obanikoro may present himself for screening while the applicants “may lose their rights to challenge the respondents.”

Obanikoro alleges plot to destabilise PDP

Former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro has refuted claims by a group, Lagos Integrity Watch, which accused him of attacking Chief Bode George in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward congresses in the state.

Obanikoro, in a statement yesterday by his Special Adviser on Media Strategy, Ohimai Amaize, disclaimed the report.

He said it was a ploy to destabilise Lagos PDP and cause disunity and disaffection in the party.

“At no time did Senator Obanikoro engage or accuse Chief Bode George of partisanship or interference in Lagos PDP ward congresses.

“Social media comments or opinions by individuals speaking for themselves do not in anyway represent the personal views of Senator Obanikoro.

“We are well aware that this is a critical time in the history of Lagos PDP and hired agents of propaganda will want to seize the opportunity to wreak havoc.

“The former minister acknowledges the great role that Chief Bode George is playing to foster unity, equity and fair play as the father of PDP in Lagos State.”

  • Obanikoro, Maku, Wike resign to run for governor

Obanikoro, Maku, Wike resign to run for governor

Seven ministers are leaving the cabinet to run for governor.

PresidentGoodluck Jonathan led the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to thank the ministers who are expected to quit before or on Monday.

Leaving are Labaran Maku (Information), Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu (Health), Nyesom Wike (Education) and Emeka Wogu (Labour).

Others are Minister of State for Trade and Investment Samuel Ortom, Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro and Minister of State for Niger Delta Darius Ishaku

The President noted that they had not officially resigned as they were yet to send their letters of resignation to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

According to him, those leaving have up till October 20 to make their intentions known.

He said: “If you are a public officer or you are a civil servant, if you have to go into an elective office you have to disengage on or before 20th of this month.

“Going by that, that means that any of our colleagues who has the interest to contest any level of election may not be with us the next council day, that is next Wednesday.”

“I think people may want to know what is the fate of XYZ. But I want to make it very clear that as at this morning, about seven members of council may, and I use the word ‘may’ because you don’t conclude anything in politics until… so seven of us may not be here next Wednesday, if their plans continue.”

Continuing, he said: “But we may not say they are not with us until they write to us through the secretary of government. As we are talking, nobody has written and we have not dropped anybody. People should not say we have dropped ministers; no. We have not dropped ministers; they are still ministers of council, but assuming between now and next council if they decide to go on with their plans, it is only proper we wish them well assuming we don’t see them again.

“But if they change their plans, they will continue to be with us, but after receiving the letters and they change their minds, it will be too late. So, if they have to change their minds they have to change their minds before sending the letter to the secretary of the government.

“So those that may not be with us next wednesday are Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, Minister of Health, Prof. Onyeabuchi Chukwu, Minister of State Education, Nyesom Wike, Minister of State, Industry, Trade, Investment, Samuel Ortum, Minister of State Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Minister of State, Niger Delta Affairs,  Dairu Dickson Ishiaku, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu.”

Wishing the outgoing ministers well and thanking them for their service to the nation on behalf of FEC, the Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo said: “We appreciate the service rendered by these our brothers who have rendered distinguished service to this cabinet and to our country. They have a strong call, a notching to serve our nation in other capacities  as core hard politicians. One will say that they came, they saw, they acquired knowledge and then want to go out and serve their own people in their states.”

“They have served very well. They gave us their best. They stood by you and by us their cabinet members. They identified with us and with our great leader’s transformation agenda. And now that they have decided to become your excellency’s ambassadors in their various areas, we wish them well. We wish them the best of God’s guidance and protection.”

Maku, on behalf of the outgoing ministers, expressed gratitude to the President for giving them the opportunity to serve.

He said: “This is truly a very difficult and an emotional moment for me and my colleagues who are about to take a leap of fate in our lives as individuals and as officers of state.

“For me and Chukwu and a few others, we have been here with you for the last four and half years in this hallowed chambers, going through all the experiences we have gone through as the leader of this country so far.”

“Your excellency, we believe in you, we believe in this country. Under you, this country has undergone fundamental changes, both in terms of leadership style, in focus and policy implementation for the transformation of our country.”

Maku added: “Let me say sir that I mentioned something here last week when we were discussing Ebola virus disease conquest by your leadership, that you may not be appreciated now sir, but don’t worry, a time is going to come when this country will celebrate you because from what we have seen, the experiences we have gone through and the talent you have shown as a leader, it is very clear that God brought you purposely to stabilise this country and to give us a new direction out of a crisis of several decades.”

“Your cabinet, maybe apart from First Republic and Gen. Gowon, no ministers have had this stability of tenure in this country for a very long time. And today, this stability is impacting positively in the live of our country.”

Maku said: “In the first two years or so, you were maligned but today as result continues to come in from different sectors  because of stability of leadership, your focus, your vision, the nation is beginning to read you differently.”

“The last in my opinion which is very important, is that you have a cosmopolitan approach to leadership in Nigeria. You have been able to bring together diverse people from all walks of life, you have resisted temptations to religious sentiments, resisted persuations for ethnic or sectional sentiments, you have remained a unifyer as every leader in a diverse country should be.

And so we are going out with some of these lessons which we have learnt quietly from you in the last for yours.”

He asked the President to forgive any of the outgoing ministers who might have offended him.

“But Mr. President in the last four years and know that in several respects a lot of us would have done things that you didn’t approve of but because of your kind of personality,  you may not feel like telling us and you may not never tell us maybe in your memiors one day if you choose to vouch.”

“But let me say that in any ways we have fell short of your vision for us, expectations in the execution of our public duties, we seek your forgiveness, sincerely. I want to assure you that that would not have come intentionally for those of us who truly believe in you.”

“But we know we are human beings we must have offended you, sir, we seek your forgiveness, your understanding wherever we have failed you in the discharge of these duties.”

“One of the difficulties we have had as a government is that people outside hardly believe in you so if those of us inside do not believe in you, others are always attacking you inspite of the things you are doing. It is my hope and prayer that as we go out that we will remember that once we have come to this level of trust, it is expected of us to return home and do better for you than we are doing now to find ourselves in the future.”

“Finally, the challenges Mr. President faces, the challenges of national unity, terrorism, distraction within the Nigerian federation because of the dysfunctional nature of ruling class here and challenges of our divisiveness where we quarrel even when our nation ought to be together, when we quarrel even when we have best opportunity to build a nation. If those challenges were not brought on you after the 2011 elections, today Nigeria would have been playing at a very high league with Brazil and others.”

  • Obanikoro plans to harm APC members, says Aregbesola

Obanikoro plans to harm APC members, says Aregbesola

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, should be held responsible, if anything bad happens to any All Progressives Congress (APC) member.

He said he had credible information that Obanikoro and Police Affairs Minister Jelili Adesiyan had instructed security personnel to kill two APC members.

The governor spoke yesterday at the launch of the students’ smart identity card at the Salvation Army Middle School in Alekuwodo, Osogbo.

Urging security agents to play by the rules, he condemned what happened on Monday at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, where APC campaigners were turned back by security men and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaigners were allowed in.

Querying Obanikoro’s presence in Osun, Aregbesola said APC members had been told to be law-abiding but may react if pushed to the wall.

He said: “How could the PDP be this desperate? Obanikoro and Adesiyan told security agents that by the time two APC members are killed, other members will learn from it and the APC’s stiff resistance would be destroyed.

“We urge security agencies not to allow themselves to be used by these PDP ministers, whose party was terrorising our state before the inception of this administration.

“I am using this medium to tell security operatives that Osun people are law-abiding; they have always been contributing to the payment of your salaries and you are not supposed to harass them with the guns which were bought for you with tax money.”

On the identity card for students, the governor said Information Communication Technology (ICT) is among other promising paths his administration has chosen to tread to develop the state.

Osun is the first state to provide students with an identification card containing their biometrics.

With the card, each student is a uniquely identifiable individual and cannot be mistaken for another person. With it, the government can identify genuine students in public schools and access their information at the push of a button.

Aregbesola said the O’MEALS and other supplies to pupils would be coordinated through the smart card.

He said it would eliminate fraud and accounting errors.

The governor said: “We have applied it to our revenue collection and tax administration and got good results. Immediately we deployed it in our revenue collection system, our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) improved by 100 per cent from N300 million to N600 million.”

  • Obanikoro defends troops deployment for Osun poll

Obanikoro defends troops deployment for Osun poll

Minister of State of Defence Senator Musliu Obanikoro spoke yesterday on Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.

The minister addressed reporters in Osogbo, the state capital.

He said President Goodluck Jonathan wanted one-man, one-vote.

Besides, he alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was mobilising people from Lagos to ahead of the poll.

    But APC denied the allegation.

Obanikoro said: “The people of Osun State should resist this invasion and we will support them to ensure that they did not succeed in achieving this.

“There was no multiple voting, no ballot snatching in Ekiti. The military helped the process,” he said.

On the constitutionality of military presence, he said Osun is bigger than Ekiti.

“That is why the presence will be more. It is my responsibility to secure the people, not to give advantage to the PDP, but to the people of Osun,” Obanikoro said.

But APC denied the PDP’s allegation.

The party said the PDP and Obanikoro were only looking for how to use the security agents to unleash terror on Osun residents, particularly APC supporters.

The party’s spokesman, Mr. Kunle Oyatimi said: “The security forces appear to have intensified their harassment of Osun people by interfering in the movement of people in our cities and towns and arresting targeted individuals, including Yemi Oke, a leader of APC in Obokun Local Governmenet Area .

“Early Monday morning, they created panic through rigorous searches in Osogbo and Ilesa, causing traffic to crawl for hours before relenting as the afternoon approached. Convoys of strange-looking people, believed to be militants from Bayelsa and other Niger Delta states, have been moving in and out of Ilesa. They were escorted by branded vehicles of the Omisore Campaign Organisation.

“Speculation is rife that the security services may be rehearsing a lock-down of Osogbo and other cities on Tuesday (today) in what we have been informed is a desperate bid to whittle down the number of supporters expected at the final mega rally of the APC.”

Stay away from Osun, acting  IGP warns ‘trouble makers’

    By Augustine Ehikioya

The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, has warned those he said may intend to cause trouble in Osun State to stay away from Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Abba addressed State House correspondents yesterday after a meeting with Vice-President Namadi Sambo at the Presidential Villa in Abuja

He said only people who have official functions to perform in the state would be allowed to move freely within Osun during the election.

To ensure peace in the state, the police chief said he had changed the operational guidelines of his predecessor, Mohammed Abubakar, who retired last week.

Abba said the new operational guideline would ensure that his men get to Osun State on time to prepare for the election.

FG to world powers: Cut terrorists’ sources of funds

The Federal Government on Wednesday urged the international community to assist in the current fight against terrorism ravaging the Northeastern part of Nigeria by cutting the sources of funds for the Boko Haram sect.

The Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, made the appeal while responding to questions from reporters in Lagos at the closing ceremony of Exercise Obangame Express 2014, held at the Western Naval Command (WNC), where he represented the Minister of Defence, Gen. Aliyu Gusau Mohammed (rtd).

While acknowledging that the extremist sect has international sponsors, Obanikoro said the nation was collaborating with the international community because no single nation can tame terrorism.

“Despite being the richest nation in the world, the United States has not been able to tame terrorism in Afghanistan, Libya…same experience is what we are going through in Nigeria today.

“How to curb these challenges is the main reason we are cooperating and collaborating with the international community. Yes, it is happening in our country, but when funding is coming from oversees, that is not Nigeria.

“We are saying there is an international dimension to these crises that we are going through. We are not saying the whole world should come and join us in fighting but all we are saying is that the sources of funding for these terrorists should be cut off and that will to a large extent, help us in bringing the challenges under control,” he said.

On Exercise Obangame Express, Obanikoro said: “given the activities of pirates and the ideas of capacity building coupled with the globalisation of the world, it is important for nations to put resources together to conduct this kind of exercise because what affects a nation affects the others.”

  • ‘Warn Obanikoro, Adesiyan against brigandage’

    ‘Warn Obanikoro, Adesiyan against brigandage’

THE Coalition of Self Determination Groups (COSEG) has called on the Federal Government, the Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau and Director General of the State Security Service to instruct the Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro to stop what it called brigandage in South west. The group in a release signed by Mr. Ifedayo Ogunlana and Rasak Olokooba, Chairman and Secretary of COSEG respectively urged relevant authorities to call Senator Obanikoro and his counterpart in the Ministry of Police Affairs, Mr. Jelili Adesiyan to order on their arbitrary use of military and police personnel to disturb the peace in the Southwest of Nigeria. COSEG described the act of the two ministers as that of one that is no befitting their status as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. According to COSEG, “We, as an organization, have noted with regrets his recent actions in Lagos and most recently at the inconclusive Ilaje/Ese Odo bye-election. We are of the opinion that with Obanikoro’s meddling with electoral matters using his office as the Minister of State for Defence, Nigeria may be in for another season of inconclusive elections. “It was widely reported how the Minister of State for Defence allegedly turned a vandal and mastermind of the crises that dogged the Ondo electoral processes. “We must state very clearly that the Presidency must be seen to promote peace and orderliness in any region. However, from all indications, anarchy is looming in the South West of Nigeria which as of today, is the most peaceful region in Nigeria”. The organisation pointed out. The Organisation warned that it shall not take lightly to various illegal activities of any of the ministers from the part of the country, saying It was Senator Obanikoro who stopped some Lagos officials from performing their official assignment with soldiers two weeks ago. Speaking on the Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Jelili Adesiyan said he was alleged to have slapped a governorship aspirant and a former Governor of Osun State. “It is in this light that both Obanikoro and Adesiyan must be reminded that the Yoruba are not cowards and we refused to be cowed or intimidated by the shenanigans of these unpatriotic sons of this part of the country. “We also wish to remind the Presidency that it would amount to deliberate act of sabotage of the peace of the South West should the activities of these two remain uncurtailed immediately lest Nigerians begin to see that the Presidency itself has a plot to further extend the field of carnage it is yet to cope with in the North, South East and South-South parts of the country”. COSEG posited. The Organisation however commended the Ondo State INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Akin Orebiyi for his courage in telling the truth and standing by it despite various unruly attitudes and illegal activities of Obanikoro.

  • INEC’s report on Ondo by-election indicts Obanikoro

INEC’s report on Ondo by-election indicts Obanikoro

The report of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has indicted the Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, of obstructing the smooth conduct of the by-election in Ilaje/Ese-Odo, Ondo State, which was declared inconclusive.

At a stakeholders’ meeting, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Akin Orebiyi, said Obanikoro obstructed the electoral process, soiling his hands in the process.

Orebiyi was quoted in the media as saying: “We are aware of how Obanikoro soiled his hands obstructing the electoral process. You can quote me anywhere. One of our officers was almost lynched by the people because they mistook him for Obanikoro. We know what happened and you can quote me anywhere.

The REC blamed the inconclusiveness of the election on Obanikoro’s conduct, saying the minister brought in soldiers to intimidate the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) opponents and compromise the electoral officials to his party’s advantage.

A PDP official, who did not want to be named, said Obanikoro’s actions could taint the PDP’s record in the Southwest.

Speaking with The Nation yesterday at the party’s secretariat, he said majority of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) members were of the opinion that Obanikoro should be redeployed to a less sensitive ministry.

He said: “There is no reason the minister should be drafting soldiers for electoral contests. If the PDP wins such election, would other parties not accuse us of using soldiers to oppress them? Drafting soldiers for a local election creates the impression that the PDP cannot win election in the Southwest without intimidating other parties.

“Our party leaders have seen the need to ask Mr. President to call the minister to order to avoid a situation where the PDP would fall prey to media propaganda.”

A socio-political group, Restoration Alliance, called for Obanikoro’s resignation and prosecution.

In a statement by its General Secretary, Akin Ulenuse, the group said following Obanikoro’s indictment by INEC, the minister should “resign and his prosecution should commence immediately.”

It urged INEC to declare Mr. Kolade Akinjo of the Labour Party (LP) winner of the by-election.

The group said the REC’s revelation disqualifies the PDP’s candidate, “in whose favour Obanikoro acted”, and “implies that votes counted in his favour be declared invalid.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State warned Obanikoro against attempting to militarise the August 9 governorship poll.

In a statement by its spokesman, Kunle Oyatomi, the party said it was aware that the Ondo by-election “incident” was a test-run of what Obanikoro and his counterparts plan to do in Osun State.

The APC said that any attempt to use the military, police or armed youths to corrupt the electoral process would result in chaos.

It urged the Federal Government to prevent its officials from using federal institutions for criminal purposes.

The party said Obanikoro’s actions in the by-election caused ripples in top military circles and threatens democracy.

APC urged Osun people to defend their votes on August 9.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) called for Obanikoro’s sack.

The students gathered yesterday at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade in Akure, the state capital, where they expressed their disappointment over Obanikoro’s conduct.

They said it was saddening that a minister would attempt to frustrate the electoral process.

NANS’ National Financial Secretary Timielyin Ayenuro urged the President to sack Obanikoro, who he described as “a disgrace to the democratic process”.

Ayenuro, who was in the company of NANS’ Zonal Coordinator Asefon Sunday; National President, Association of Ilaje Students, Ekudehinwa and NANS JCC Chairman Adewumi Rufai, urged INEC to declare a winner in the by-election.

The placards-carrying students, who said they were not sponsored by any party or person, said they would have marched to the INEC office to vent their anger but they changed their decision because of Monday’s bomb blasts in Nyanyan.

Ayenuro said: “We are condemning the minister’s involvement in the election. His action is undemocratic, barbaric and irresponsible. It is sad that a Minister of Defence, who is supposed to conduct himself orderly, involved himself in an election using soldiers to intimidate and harass voters.

“Indeed, Obanikoro is a disgrace to our political system. In a sane clime, people like this would be sacked immediately.”
