  • Obaro Ibru retreats into back seat

There are some teachers, like fame, whose lessons only really sink in when they are gone. When it is around, fame is an enthralling seductress that ensnares the hearts of men in its charms, turning them into thralls to the allure of temporary glory. But when it is gone, it becomes the dream of a better past and cold comfort for the present devoid of the merriment and jollity of yesteryears.

Obaro Ibru, the fun-loving son of former managing director of defunct Oceanic Bank, Cecilia Ibru, is no doubt learning this lesson in the privacy of his anonymous cocoon. Time was when the son of the scion of the Ibru empire, Chief Michael Ibru, rocked A-list events with so much class and panache. He became the ‘party king’ with a reputation for hosting weird parties that would make a nun recoil in horror.

From the South African beachside to the Nigerian night life scene, he ruled the party scene everywhere he went until fame packed her bags and left. Abruptly, the parties stopped. The visits to night clubs reduced and the party king morphed from fact to legend as Obaro was hardly seen again.

All this began after his mother was jailed in 2010 for corruption charges. He tried to make a brief comeback a couple years ago but his allure had worn off and he was left to unceremoniously recoil into his shell.

  • Life’s lessons for Obaro Ibru

THE economic theory to the effect that human beings are insatiable holds true, but there appears to be exceptions in people like Obaro Ibru. It could be the fun loving son of former Managing Director of the defunct Oceanic Bank, Cecilia Ibru, has come to realise that fame is as fleeting as time. It could also be that he learnt some hard lessons from his ventures as party king, a sobriquet he earned from hosting weird parties. For years, he rocked A-list events with so much class and panache. He simply knew how to bring dead shindigs into life with his infectious personality.

Obaro represents different things to different people. To some, Obaro is a young man with a carefree approach to life in general, while to others he is a young man from a privileged home. Many still recall a weird kind of party he reportedly hosted in South Africa, which was attended by a large number of privileged young adults like himself.

But his status as an outgoing socialite got a blow when his mother was jailed in 2010. The once ubiquitous young man became a scarce commodity in the social market. Since then, he has tried to revive his social status to no avail. In 2015, he made a brief comeback to the social scene when he was spotted at the late businessman Chief Bayo Kuku’s burial. That has been over a year, and given the circumstances and how fickle fame is, Obaro’s name is understandably beginning to fade off the lips of socialites who once tooted his horn.

Nothing has been heard about the once party rocker lately and no one seems to know where he is currently hibernating.

  • Obaro Ibru adopts low profile

Obaro Ibru, the fun loving son of former Managing Director of the defunct Oceanic Bank, Mrs Cecilia Ibru, has come to realise that fame is neither a profession nor a life sustaining necessity. Rather, it is a fickle mistress that seeks a new partner as soon as she gets tired of one.

A few years ago, Obaro rocked the social space and graced A-list events with so much class and sophistication that admirers were left drooling in his wake. He dictated the pace of high society and brought shindigs alive with his infectious personality. After hosting numerous unconventional parties, he was tagged “the party king”. Night life was his comfort zone and he derived immense satisfaction from the blast of loud music and the rush of night parties.

Misfortune, however, set in when his mother, Cecila Ibru, was jailed in 2010. As would be expected, Obaro’s status on the social radar received a heavy blow and the once ubiquitous socialite became as scarce as feathers on a fish. Obaro has since tried to rejuvenate his social status all to no avail. In 2015, he made a brief comeback to the social scene when he was spotted at an event. A year has gone by since then and nothing has been heard about him.

Worse still, no one seems to know where the former party rocker has retired to.
