  • Obasanjo seeks apology from AIT over alleged ‘meeting with Osinbajo, others’

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked the African Independent Television (AIT) to retract with apology, the airing of a photo on its social media segment, Kakaki Social, where a purported tweeter account belonging to him, depicted a picture of his alleged meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN).

The alleged meeting, at his Ota farm in Ogun State, also included Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

Obasanjo said the apology should also be extended to Osinbajo for the embarrassment the depiction of the picture might have caused him.

The elder statesman stated this in a statement issued by his Special Assistant (Media) Kehinde Akinyemi yesterday.

He expressed disappointment that AIT could disseminate information it sourced from fake Twitter Account without first verifying it.

He added that he did not have Twitter account anywhere and expressed concern over the continuous use of his name by suspected fraudsters on social media platforms.

Obasanjo  warned  that whoever that is caught perpetrating the act, would be made to face prosecution immediately, even as he advised the media to always be professional in discharging their duty and refrain from creating unnecessary confusion and heating up the polity

“It is a fact that severally, (sic) the former President dissociated himself from owning any social media account. Therefore, it is highly disappointing that such sensitive Twitter post would be allowed to go on air without verification by the African Independent Television (AIT).

“There was no meeting with the Vice President anywhere. I was at the airport and was informed that he was around in the Lounge and out of courtesy, I felt I should go and greet him. We met, greeted and exchanged pleasantries and I left. That was all.

“The station should have been very professional and not causing confusion and heating up the polity. That I am not operating any social media account should not be strange to a station like AIT, and for that embarrassment, the Vice President and I deserve an apology,” Obasanjo said.

  • Buhari, Gowon, Obasanjo, Mahama, others laud Jonathan

    •Ex-President: way out of vote-buying

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s book presentation organised to mark his 61st birthday yesterday turned into a spectacular praise galore.

Eminent citizens, including President Muhammadu Buhari, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Abdusalam Abubakar (rtd), Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) and retired Justice Alfa Belgore described him as a great patriot and true democrat for conceding the 2015 presidential elections.

At the presentation of the book, “My Transition Hours” were  foreign leaders including former Ghanaian President Mr. John Mahama, former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma, UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General to West Africa, Mr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas poured encomiums on Jonathan.

Others including Senegalese President Macky Sall, Muhammadou Issoufou (Niger Republic), Faure Gnassingbe (Togo) and Ibrahim Keita (Mali) expressed excellent attestations about Jonathan in a recorded video presentation.

Jonathan also advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on how to prevent vote buying in next year’s elections.

Buhari on Tuesday hailed Jonathan for voluntarily conceding defeat

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, the president said Jonathan’s act of courage had made him a patriotic leader and earned popularity among Africans and other leaders.

“You are a leader of the past, of now and of the future; you will rise again; I wish you the best you wish yourself,” Buhari said, urging Nigeians

He said Nigerians should eschew bitterness, bigotry, hate speech and “promote Nigeria for us and generation yet unborn.”

Obasanjo who was Chairman of the occasion, also hailed Jonathan’s statesmanship disposition and urged him to remain committed to his residual responsibility of continuous service to his immediate community, Nigeria, Africa and beyond.

Gowon also thanked Jonathan for conceding defeat in 2015 to save Nigeria from impending war and consolidating democracy not only in the country but the entire African continent.

He applauded Jonathan for his role in fostering unity, peace, progress and strengthening democratic rule in Africa, saying “Goodluck Jonathan is a good man and when the history of democracy in Africa is written, his name will be etched in gold”.

Gen. Abdulsalami said Nigeria was not at war today because of the decision by Jonathan to concede defeat during the 2015 general elections.

” We cannot thank you enough for the peace we are having in the country today; for the peaceful transition we had when you freely and voluntarily conceded defeat.

” By your decision, you have shown that you love your country more than you love power,” he said.

Former President Mahama described Jonathan as more of an academic who found himself in politics.

Mahama said Jonathan approached leadership in a relaxed manner and that was why he left a good legacy worthy of emulation by all leaders in Africa.

Koroma said:“I will not stop thanking Nigeria and its former President for your support for the Mano River Unon, for your support to EOWAS but I will not stop challenging Nigeria that this country hs responsibility toprovide great leadership for all of us to follow.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, said the act of accepting defeat by Jonathan helped to stabilise the already charged political atmosphere during the elections.

He recalled how Jonathan used to vow that his ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian and called on political leaders to toe the same path and should not look at elections as declaration of war as the 2019 polls approached.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar said Nigeria was fortunate to have a selfless leader like the former President.

He said that the decision of Jonathan to concede defeat in 2015 had helped to consolidate democracy not only in Nigeria but on the African continent.

Abubakar also said that Nigerians and Africans would continue to remain grateful to Jonathan for upholding national interest at the expense of his personal interest.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described Jonathan as a pillar of contemporary Nigeria democracy.

A statement by its spokesman Kola Ologbodiyan said “In all, President Jonathan amply demonstrated that the true essence of leadership and statesmanship is the application of the virtues, opportunities and authority therein for the good of others rather than self, and for that our party and indeed Nigerians celebrate him.

“The PDP therefore joins family members, associates and well-wishers at large in celebrating Dr. Jonathan as he attains this milestone and prays that God will continue to keep him in good health and sound mind as he gives himself to the service of our dear fatherland”.

Jonathan said vote buying had become scandalous and placed the country in a bad light.

He said voter inducement through engraving of pictures of candidates and political party logos on gift items during elections was another rampant strategy of vote buying.

He advised INEC to borrow a leaf from other African countries and create polling centres in public places such as schools where classrooms were used for voting to make it difficult for vote buying.

Hundreds of prominent Nigerians including APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Yakubu Dogara, former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafara, former-Vice President Namadi Sambo, ex-PDP governors, ministers and many members of the political class, traditional rulers and members of the diplomatic corps graced the presentation

  • Akwa Ibom 2019: How influential is Obasanjo on voters?

In the last few days the camp of the Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has sported a winner mien, waving everywhere they go the endorsement of the governor by former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, as their talisman for the forthcoming governorship poll. They have been so energised by the Obasanjo support that they are reportedly planning to bring in more people from outside the state for a similar endorsement of the governor.

There is no debate whatsoever whether Governor Emmanuel and his handlers have the right in building alliances and seeking the friendship of anyone they fancy for the purpose of achieving their political goals. Analysts are however intrigued by the apparent confusion and contradictions; the deliberate self-tripping, the sheer lack of a sensible strategy and direction by Governor Emmanuel’s maneuvers in his bid for four more years in the Akwa Ibom State Government House.

Now here is the bone in the throat. Mr Emmanuel, a governor on the opposition PDP platform, has been courting the Presidency and he is still doing so for support, if not outright adoption, and suddenly in the midst of all these effusions about and efforts at building friendly relations with the Villa, Governor Emmanuel is now trumpeting his infatuation, and worse, with Chief Obasanjo who is the number one traducer of President Muhammadu Buhari, and who has openly recruited a phalanx of naysayers against the Buhari second term bid, in addition to raising “a third force” to stop him. So what is the strategy, what sense is the deacon governor making here? Self-tripping!

The claim of courtship is not unfounded. Early in the Buhari presidency Governor Udom Emmanuel was a regular fixture on the entourage of the President’s overseas trips. We cannot say whether this was induced. What we can say is that other opposition governors like the just retired Peter “the rock” Ayo Fayose and Nyesom Wike who made no secret of their opposition to the President at the time were not part of those trips. When the President was ill and was hospitalized in the UK, Udom Emmanuel was among a select crop of governors cleared to pay a get-well visit to him.

Of course, the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, was a frequent visitor to Udom Emmanuel in Uyo. The romance with the Villa was so passionate that the NTA, a key branding institution of the Federal Government, selected Emmanuel for an integrity award early in the year, and had the governor conferred with the award by Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on the grounds of Aso Rock, the seat of the central government, which is controlled by the APC, a political party with which Mr Emmanuel’s PDP is in opposition. In the midst of all of this, there were reports circulating in the whisper network of Udom Emmanuel either offering to work for Buhari’s re-election in return for the President’s support to the governor for his second term bid, or lobbying the Presidency to join the APC. The speculation of the governor’s planned defection to the APC was so strong that leaders of the opposition party in the state had to issue a statement rejecting his plan beforehand, and warning him to stay where he was.

This is the context in which to appraise the ongoing flirtation with Obasanjo by Governor Emmanuel. I can’t see how Emmanuel hopes to win running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. He isn’t making sense with this approach. There is no way the Presidency would not see his romance with Obasanjo as an attack on President Buhari. Many would actually construe it as a clear statement that Obasanjo is more valuable in the governor’s political calculation than Buhari. Should these scenarios hold true, would that put Udom Emmanuel’s second-term bid in good stead?

Emmanuel’s maneuvers raise the spectre of inexplicable hubris. Other opposition governors, including David Umahi of Ebony State and Ben Ayade of Cross River State, who have also obviously sought to be in the good graces of the President, have not, unlike Emmanuel, gone out of their way to antagonize him. What gives Emmanuel the conceit that he can take on the President in such a blatant manner without attracting political consequences to himself?

Emmanuel’s approach to issues—all issues—has always appeared befuddled. Early on while courting the President, describing him as father to all, he threatened to tear down his campaign office in Uyo, and accused him of denying the state its full due in federally collected revenue. The faux pas on the share of the state’s revenue from federal allocation must have embarrassed the state cabinet because the commissioner for finance tried to walk back government’s position on the matter by issuing a clarification, correctly explaining why sometimes there are shortfalls in allocations owing to the inevitable variations in expected and actual oil production figures upon which derivation revenue is based—a point which an accountant like the governor strangely appears to have missed.

The same befuddlement is written all over the state government’s so-called industrialization policy. Supposing we take the argument without conceding that the state government is pursuing industrialisation, how does anyone make sense of such policy without enabling infrastructure? The governor-elect of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola, in his first post-election interview with the media, emphatically said that there could be no meaningful development without adequate infrastructure. That position is a given in development economics, except in Udom Emmanuel’s weird philosophy of development.

Contrary to what works globally, Emmanuel has turned his back on infrastructure development in his state. He has abandoned every single uncompleted infrastructure project inherited from the previous government. Yet he is claiming to be building industries. Neither sense nor direction!

I don’t know whether the governor has ever heard of the concept, ‘Build and they will come.’ That is the concept that the rulers of Dubai have used to turn their half of the United Arab Emirates into the world’s fastest growing investment destination. Through frenzied but well-coordinated investment in infrastructure they have within two decades turned an oil commodity-based economy into an industrializing, high-growth development hub relying on the non-oil sector for 70 per cent of its GDP.

Udom Emmanuel’s view of governance and politics generally is at best laughable. He does the opposite of what works in both areas. What is worse, he tinges this humbling humbug with uncommon dose of mendacity.

Emmanuel’s romance with Obasanjo has vindicated the opposition in the state. At the time the governor was fawning around the presidency, the opposition warned the government in several open letters that they should not be taken in by trickery, pointing to reasons that suggested the governor was actually professing fake friendship, beneath which were dark designs for the President. So, Mr. Emmanuel’s ill-will didn’t just happen. It has a long, seedy trajectory.  But, it’s hard to see where the governor is going. What is easy to see is that he is writing a most lamentable chapter in the history of his state.

  • Stop pilfering LGs’ funds, Obasanjo tells state govts

Former President  Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday accused state governors of routinely stealing the money meant for the Local Governments in the country and in the process, rendered them incapable of performing even the basic rudimentary functions for their people.
Obasanjo disclosed that the state governors allegedly pilfer Local Governments’ funds through the nebulous “joint account,” adding that this informed why they have remained antagonistic to the agitation for Local Government (LG) autonomy.
The ex – President who spoke when members of a Non-Governmental Organisation, Friends of Democracy (FoD) visited him  at his new residence within the  Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the state capital,  lamented that many of the third tier of government could not perform their statutory functions because they have been “incapacitated financially” by the  state governments.
The group  were in Obasanjo’s home to seek his  support for the Local Government Autonomy Bill which had been passed by the  National Assembly, but still requires the nod of not less than 24 State Houses of Assembly to sail through successfully.
According to Obasanjo, some of the state governments take from the joint account without contributing to it.
The elder statesman recalled that the LG Reforms carried out in 1976  was meant to give the third tier of government air of freedom and not be an appendage of the state governments.
According to him, the  state governments which enjoys  autonomy,  are opposed to the agitation for measures  granting autonomy to councils in Nigeria.
He urged  the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to persevere in the demand for the autonomy in the interest of the people at the grassroots.
“When in 1976, we brought in Local Government Reforms, it was meant to be a third tier of the government and not meant to be subjected to the whims and caprices of any other government. Just the same way that the state government is autonomous from the Federal Government.
“Local Government is meant to be autonomous from the State Government, but from what we know, by design, most states have incapacitated the Local Governments. They have virtually stolen the Local Governments’ money in what they called Joint Account. They were to contribute 10 percent but they never contributed anything.
“So, what we have across the country are Local Government Areas that have functions, but cannot perform the functions. They have staff but most of them cannot pay the staff, and we keep getting excuses upon excuses.
“And I see no reason if the Federal Government allows the states to enjoy their autonomy except in the case of state of emergency.
“The Bill passed by the National Assembly which requires 24 State Houses of Assembly and like I am told only 9 States have signed it.
“I am proud of those states because they are what you will call progressive states that really believe in democracy.
“My own state (Ogun) is one of them. I will say kudos to Ogun State. In the South-South, only Bayelsa and Cross River States have signed it. Kudos to those two states. In the North-East, it’s only Bauchi. In the North-West, it’s only Sokoto. In the North-Central, we have four states, Kwara, Niger, Plateau and Benue. I will say kudos to the executives and the legislature of those states.
“But we must say those state executives and the legislatures that have prevented the bill from being passed, they must be taken as the enemy of the people and they should be treated as such. Because if you enjoy autonomy from the Federal Government why don’t you want Local Government to enjoy autonomy?
“Again, I will say leadership of NLC and NULGE who have always fought for the interest of the people should know that the interest of the people at the local government will be best served if the LG has autonomy which is meant that they should have.”
  • Nigeria has made lots of mistakes – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday bemoaned the frustrations of Nigerians because of the state of affairs in the country, but said he still remained convinced that “God did not create Nigeria to be rudderless.” Obasanjo said God created Nigeria and endowed her to be one of the great nations of the world, declaring that it is not the fault of God that the country is unable to attain its potential despite the great endowments.

The ex-president spoke at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolade Osinowo, led the candidates of the party in the state, including the governorship candidate, Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, the running mate, Mrs Bisi Okeowo-Bolade and Chief (Mrs) Titi Oseni-Gomez, for the 2019 general elections to him.

He reckoned that God though usually uses human beings to advance his cause on earth, stressing, however, that what the pitiable state the country is in today is a result of the “conscious and unconscious choices of the people of Nigeria.” He noted that many are “hopelessly frustrated and disillusioned” in the country, but also counselled Nigerians not to despair much, expressing the hope that the “God of miracle” that had continued to love Nigeria, would bring succour to the land.

He also admitted that Nigeria as a country has made many mistakes which could have plunged it to extinction, but said the country has continued to exist and remained as one because of the love and grace of God upon her.

  • Obasanjo, Gowon, others for Kaduna Baptist Church centenary anniversary

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) have been billed for 100 years celebration of the First Baptist Church, Ahmadu Bello Way, Kaduna, slated between November 1 to 18, this year.

Addressing a journalists in Kaduna on Friday, Chairman, Centenary Anniversary Planning Committee, Dcn Engr. Adeniyi Rasheed Rufai told reporters that, the church, located in the heart of Kaduna, has survived several violence with the help of God and security agents in the state in the last 100 years.

According to him, the church though founded in 1914, was officially launched in 1918 at about the time the colonial masters created Kaduna City thereby making it one of the oldest denominations in Northern Nigeria.

Kaduna City had marked its 100 years earlier in the year where the Church played host to the City’s centenary church service led by Deputy Governor, Arch. Yusuf Bala Bantex.

  • Anenih served Nigeria meritoriously, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has described the death of former Minister of Works, Chief Anthony Anenih, as a great loss, saying the late elder statesman served Nigeria meritoriously.

Obasanjo, who paid glowing tributes to the former minister in a condolence letter dated Oct. 29, to the Head of Anenih’s family, noted that the deceased lived a well-fulfilled life.

He said in the letter made available to newsmen on Monday in Abeokuta by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, that God had been kind to Anenih in many ways.

The former president added that the demise of Anenih marked the end of the “inspiring chapter of Nigeria’s history.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the former Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BOT) died on Sunday at the age of 85.

Obasanjo said the life of Anenih who he appointed Minister of Works in 1999 was an archetypal lesson in public service and leadership at its best.

“He served the nation with devotion and diligence in his chosen profession. His service in the Nigeria Police Force was distinguished by high professional standard.

“He was an epitome of humility and dignity both in service and retirement, even though he rose to the rank of Commissioner of Police before retirement.

“In the course of a lifetime of remarkable contributions to the political sector of the nation, Anenih became a national icon and authentic role model.

“He remained one of the outstanding leaders of our generation,” the former president said.

  • Obasanjo: Emmanuel good for 2nd term

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo  yesterday endorsed Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel for a second term.

He spoke at a  Qua Iboe Church in Uyo, the state capital.

Obasanjo said “Akwa Ibom people, you have a good product and you can’t change him. He has no fears, please stand with him; he will take you to the Promised Land.  I am here to congratulate him. We should be celebrating good governance. I will be back here for a bigger celebration soon” the former President said.

Explaining that he was in the state briefly to congratulate the governor, Obasanjo noted that out of the attributes of truth, forgiveness, love and continuity that God shares with man, continuity has been in existence since God created the world.

He said God created us to tell the truth and not lies, to forgive so that we will be forgiven, to love because God is love and gave His son so that we do not perish, adding that we should not do any less than what God has done.

“As the governor has said, I am here to congratulate him, and he himself asked the question, what is he celebrating? I will tell you what I know we should be celebrating. We should be celebrating good leadership. Unfortunately, I don’t have time but I will come back and when I come back, I will come back for a big celebration.

“You have to be a strong Christian to be able to say, ‘God will find for me a successor that will do to me what I have done to my

predecessor’. This man believes in his character, he believes in his value, he believes in his service to humanity and to God.

“I always cherish the attributes of God. The wonderful God that we worship kept some attributes to himself, he doesn’t share with anybody: Omnipresence, Omnipotent, Omniscience, all that is kept for God and God alone. He has other attributes that he shares with us – kindness, generosity, compassion, truth, forgiveness, love and continuity.

“God is a God of continuity since he created the world. I always say to myself and my family, if something is good, keep it. We have a good product in our hand and if I have a good product in my hand, I will not change it, I will keep it. This is a good product, let’s have him for continuity. I can assure you, this governor has no fear, he will stand still. Please stand with him and he will take us to the promise land,” he said.

While speaking, Emmanuel who said Obasanjo was in the state on solidarity visit stated that the presence of the former President always brings about something good.

He said: “Whenever you see him move, know that something is about to happen. As you see him move today, something good is about to happen in Akwa Ibom. He has spoken concerning Nigeria and I’m sure something good is about to happen in Nigeria.

“Baba just came on a father – son solidarity visit and he chose to worship in my own local Church. I want to thank him for this show of love, this show of solidarity and I also thank God for everything”.

Hinting that he is a good successor to the erstwhile governor, Emmanuel said, “May God give me the kind of successor I have been to my predecessor”.

  • Buhari towers above Obasanjo, Atiku in integrity, says APC spokesman

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy National Publicity Secretary Yekini Nabena said yesterday that former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar cannot beat President Muhammadu Buhari in an integrity contest.

Nabena said Obasanjo’s sudden endorsement of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate has brought to question his real nature as a national leader.

The APC spokesman said Obasanjo’s previous statements about the credibility of his former deputy when he described Atiku as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader, who was not fit and proper to handle the mantle of Nigerian leadership, were enough to rubbish any sudden endorsement from him.

In a statement in Abuja, Nabena said it was a big contradiction on the part of the former President when he made a volte face and suddenly told Nigerians that he has forgiven Abubakar and now sees him as the best President for Nigeria.

He said: “Throughout their second tenure in office, (2003-2007) and until recently, former President Obasanjo had described Atiku as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader, who was not fit and proper to handle the mantle of Nigerian leadership.

“Only recently, Obasanjo vowed that God would not forgive him if he supported the presidential aspiration of Atiku as “it would amount to handing Nigeria over to sharks and looters”, only to make a U-turn to announced that he had forgiven Atiku and that he had decided to also support his presidential aspiration.

He maintained that Obasanjo’s message to Nigerians, therefore, was that his former deputy, whom he had accused of various acts of corruption, had suddenly become clean, credible and prepared to lead Nigeria.

Nabena added that it was surprising that Obasanjo who had accused Atiku of corrupt tendencies, suddenly turned around and declare the sinner forgiven and eminently qualified to govern Nigeria.

“It is this tendency towards indecision, insincerity, double talk and deception that has made Nigeria ridiculed in the eyes of the international community. A statesman is known for his principles and his statements are based on the strength of his convictions.

“When a supposed national leader makes declarations that are subject to change at any time based on his mood, such a leader loses his integrity and reliability,” he said.

  • Only committed, dedicated and patriotic Nigerians like Akinkugbe are my friends, says Obasanjo

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday gave a hint as to the characteristics that qualify those he refers to as friends, saying only the likes of Emeritus Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe who displayed greater commitment, dedication and patriotism to making a positive impact on the people are those he called his friends.

The former President spoke while giving his chairman’s remarks at an event tagged “85-60-50: Hanging of Stethoscope”, organised in honour of the doyen of medicine, Emeritus Professor, marking his 85th birthday, 60 years in medical practice and 50 year as Professor of Medicine at the University of Ibadan (UI), Ibadan.

The event which held at the International Conference Centre, UI, marked signifies the official retirement of Prof Akinkugbe from public service.

Dignitaries on the occasion include: Lady Helen Parry, former vice-chancellors, University of Ibadan Professor Ayodele Falase and Professor Kayode Oyediran, former governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, Chairman, African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, Dr Tokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu, Oba Otudeko, Professor Bolanle Awe, Dr Wale Babalakin, SAN, Chief Ayo Banjo, Prince Bayo Oyero, Brigadier Oluwole Rotimi, Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi and Olori Jumoke Agbede.

Others are Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi, Chief Medical Director, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Professor Temitope Alonge, Mr Folu Olamiti, Professor Femi Mimiko, Osemawe of Ondo, Dr Victor Kiladejo, the Ooni of Ife; Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi who was represented by Asoya of Isoya Ile-Ife, Oba Adedini Muraina and Elejesi of Ife kingdom, Oba Babatunde Tokunbo, among others.

Obasanjo who boasted that those he calls his friend are “committed Nigerians, dedicated human beings who can be trusted at every time”, described Akinkugbe as “a rare breed and one of God’s special gifts to Nigeria and an epitome of the finest tradition of African nobility.”

Said he, “We thank God for your illustrious life, exemplary leadership, ardent patriotism and life-long devotion to the cause of upholding the highest standards of conduct in your profession and within our society.

“You are one of God’s special gifts to our nation, a rare breed who epitomises the finest tradition of African nobility. We cannot stop appreciating God for giving to the world an intellectual giant, a world-renowned clinician of whom the nation is justifiably proud. We, your friends are proud of you, your achievements and contributions to the medical profession and to our nation.

“We salute your numerous contributions to the development of the country in medical practice, governance, business, education, community development and traditional institutions. As it has turned out, your medical calling has enabled you to save many lives. In your life and work, you have combined your African heritage with international best practices to enrich mankind as a whole.”

Minister of health, Professor Isaac Adewole, represented by Professor Abiodun Ilesanmi in his tribute described Emeritus Professor Akinkugbe as a man in his own class.

He said “Akinkugbe stands out clearly as a teacher, clinician, clinical administrator, father, husband and mentor. In my tribute to him when he clocked 80, I likened him to the proverbial elephant touched by six blind men and each gave a different but correct account of what he felt. The elephant is still marching on but has decided to hang the stethoscope. I have never heard of this before and would not know if anyone has ever done so. He could as well be the first to do so. That is OOA for you. Always creating ripples and new things. He is one of Nigeria’s most respected and distinguished academics and physicians.”

The Guest Lecturer, Sir Eldryd Parry of the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, London School of Hygienes and Tropical Medicine, who spoke on the title “Africa’s Health: Matters Arising”, warned that more than two-thirds of Nigerians risk spending their lifetime below the poverty line.

He said, “The poor have not experienced significant growth in their average living standards despite some moderate rise in GDP per capita over the past two decades. Thus, I found growing evidence suggesting a rising deep level of deprivation in Nigeria, rendering more than two-thirds of the poor at risk of spending their lifetimes below the poverty line. The clear implication is that growth has not been sufficient nor has it demonstrated the potential to help the poor break free from poverty.

“This calls for policies that not only bring about a rise in GDP but also boost the income growth of the poor. Like Brazil, Nigeria can achieve significant poverty reduction without absolute reliance on economic growth by reducing its two-digit inflation rate and substantially expanding its social security and social assistance transfers. Finally, improvements in life expectancy as a health outcome can also improve the chances of the poor of escaping poverty: longer lifespans could shrink the gap between life.”

The celebrant in his remarks said one of the reasons he decided to hang his stethoscope is “that I don’t want to be a patient in my own clinic.”

After his remarks, the ceremonial hanging of the stethoscope, which was described as the first in Nigeria, saw Prof Akinkugbe proudly removed his suit to dorn the lab coat for the last time as he handed over the stethoscope to Former President Obasanjo who handed it over to the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka who was represented by the deputy vice-chancellor academics, Professor Kayode Adebowale.

The DVC thereafter handed the stethoscope to the Provost, College of Medicine, Ibadan, Professor Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa for final transmission to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) University College Hospital, Ibadan, Prof Temitope Alonge who climbed a ladder and finally hanged Prof Akinkugbe’s stethoscope symbolically at the back of the stage, assuring that “the symbol of Akinkugbe’s clinical practice would be preserved at the College of Medicine archive.”
