  • Obasanjo storms PDP rally in Ogun

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday stormed House of Representatives member Ladi Adebutu’s political rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo, who dressed in white kaftan, caused a stir and excitements among the crowd when he dashed into the rally and waved.

But the former President, who announced that he had quitted partisan politics in the build-up to the 2015 general elections, did not speak during the brief moment he appeared at the rally at an expanse ground within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in  Abeokuta.

Adebutu urged Nigerians in all levels of leadership to provide good governance to the people, saying that is the only way to secure their “exalted positions and wealth.”

Adebutu said high and mighty fences or trenches could hardly secure but would just entraps one in an environment of poor governance.

The lawmaker representing Remo Federal Constituency in Ogun State, gave the advice  at the Ake Palace, Abeokuta, when he met with the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, and his chiefs prior to the rally at OOPL.

He was at the Palace to thank the Paramount ruler for his prayer in 2015 when he was contesting for the current seat being occupied by him at the lower chamber of the  National Assembly and to also seek further blessings from the royal father ahead of his 2019 governorship ambition in the state.

Adebutu said good governance would bring genuine growth and development to the people and curbs corruption.

He also noted with proper orientation, fear of God and compassion for others, a leader would able to shun corruption.

According to him, if one has the compassion for others at heart, it would be difficult for one to appropriate collective wealth for persona benefits.

  • Osinbajo, Namibian president, others pay last respects as ex-ECA scribe Adedeji is laid to rest

OSINBAJO, Gowon, Obasanjo, Namibian president, others pay last respects as ex-ECA scribe Adedeji is laid to rest Ernest Nwokolo, Abeokuta Former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and pioneer chairman of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Prof. Adebayo Adedeji, made his final departure to the world beyond yesterday amid eulogies from many African leaders. Among other words of eulogy, he was described as a “colossus” who worked for the economic emancipation of the African continent. Prof. Adedeji, the Asiwaju of Ijebuland, passed on last April 25 at the age of 87.

Past and present African leaders, including Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; Namibian President Hage Geingob; former head of state General Yakubu Gowon; former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who were at the Cathedral Church of Our Saviour, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State for the funeral service of the late professor of Economics, were unanimous in their view that his life impacted positively on Nigeria and Africa. In his tribute, Vice President Osinbajo recalled the immense contribution of the late Adedeji in the post- war planning and reconstruction of the nation’s economy, submitting that he was an “unusual human being.”

Osinbajo described the former Executive Secretary of ECA as a fair minded and objective person whose death was announced in several languages because of the various capacities he had served at different times nationally and internationally. “Professor Adedeji was an outstanding African. He was deeply involved in the integration of Africa. He did a great work in projecting Africa. We are proud of all that he achieved in his lifetime. He was one of the very unusual human being,” he said.  Namibian President, Hage Geingob, described the late Adedeji as his “mentor, brother and advocate of economic independence of Africa.” Geingob hailed the deceased as a true African who “fought the good fight for the African continent.” Obasanjo, in his tribute, said the deceased Adedeji was a friend, brother and trusted ally while Gowon described him as a “credit to Nigeria, Africa and the African race.”

Former Archbishop of the Lagos Ecclesiastical Province of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. (Prof.) Adebayo Akinde, in his sermon at the funeral service, said Adedeji left a legacy of service for Nigerians to emulate. He said the renowned economist was truly a great nationalist. The retired Archbishop said many Nigerians in position of authority have failed their generations because of greed, noting that the ex-Executive Secretary of ECA impacted positively on his generation. He said: “As mankind, we should start asking ourselves of the kind of legacy we are going to leave behind. It is important that we give serious thought to the kind of legacy we are leaving behind. “The late Professor Adedeji was a great man. He was an enigma. He was a world class economist and renowned academic.

He was a top flight diplomat. “He believed in the unity and oneness of Nigeria. He lived a world of service because he served the Africa continent, his country and state. “He has left every one of us a life of legacy.” For Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun State has lost one of its icons. “Papa was a colossus in his own right. He was one of the people we the younger ones are very proud of. He was a great son of Ogun State. He has done brilliantly well in all the capacities he served. In all facets, he did well,” Amosun said. Other notable personalities at the funeral service include former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd); former president Olusegun Obasanjo; Chief Ayo Adebanjo; Prince Bola Ajibola; Prof. Ibrahim Gambari; Chief Tony Anenih, diplomats and people from all walks of life.

  • Obasanjo failed spectacularly in office – Soyinka

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recorded spectacular failures in the 11 years he steered the affairs of the nation as Head of State and civilian President, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, said on Friday.

Soyinka stated this in the preface of his new 148-page book, Intervention VIII: Gani’s Unfinished Business, where he said Obasanjo had a phobia for education and intellectualism.

According to Soyinka, Obasanjo’s rulership records were clothed with lies, deceptions, misrepresentations, distortions and denigration of others.

Noting the ex-President’s genuine attachment to the nation, the Nobel laureate said it would be most unjust to label him an outright failure, notwithstanding that he readily does so to his predecessors and successors in office.

He said: “However, to state starkly that he has recorded sumptuous, spectacular failures in the total of 11 years of managing the Nigerian real estate is to stay within arguable borders and that us where we choose to pitch our tent, daring even the most devoted of his apologists to dispute such an obvious assessment.”

He said it would be the highest form of moral dereliction to fail to present a glimpse of a dark, sinister side of such “a paternalistic, caring figure.”

“This is a recurring decimal which now presents itself as a dedicated, even passionate rescue misnomer for a nation that is unarguably in need of a moral compass and competent leadership.”

Soyinka went further to fault Obasanjo’s “seductive pretensions of ease and benign, protective assurance among school pupils,” noting that even Adolf Hitler loved children so much that “he created a Nazi Youth Brigade, a mind bending induction from which a subsequent leadership generation still strives  remorsefully to dissociate itself.

“Not for a moment does one intend a comparison with that universal criminal, Adolf Hitler. We merely propose that cultivating the image of a committed child educationist in one’s dotage does not obliterate certain records, such as that instance when, as Head of State our subject ordered that mothers, on their way to handover a letter of protest at the incineration of their children on the tarmac of Port Harcourt airport, should be stopped by all means.

“Compared to such a spectacle of infanticidal horror and executive callousness, the educational phobia that led to a policy of rabid anti-intellectualism under his watch, may be deemed mere trivia. Yet the damage done to a nation through such an unhindered detestation of educational institutions as the stamp of his ruling mandate remains to plague the nation.

“And there are other acts of anti-intellectualism provable against our born-again educationist and developer of youthful minds, implemented at a time when it crucially mattered- under his Watch! This crafted image of childhood love constitutes an obscenity, and remain offensive to any people of memory and discernment,” he added.

  • Obasanjo and I are reunited at last – Bode George

Former National Deputy Chairman (Southwest) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, on Sunday met ex – President Olusegun Obasanjo, and declared that they are reunited after what looked like many years estranged relationship.
George who expressed happiness and satisfaction that the disagreement between him and his former boss was over with their reconciliation, attributed the cause of the unpleasant things that negatively affected their relationship to the handiwork of the devil.
The former military administrator of Ondo State made this known in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital,  when he led 10 man delegation to Obasanjo on a Thank you visit following the latter’s earlier courtesy visit to him in Lagos about two weeks ago.
According to him, the “devil has now been put to shame.”
He rededicated his loyalty and commitment to Obasanjo, saying the Ebora Owu remained his  “leader forever.”
“I have come to say thank you after visiting me last week. Only few can do that mind you.
“What happened between us is devil and the devil has been shamed. It is a solid reunion and I am very happy about it,” George said.
According to Mr. Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s Media Aide, Bode George was accompanied during the visit  by Chief Okanlawon Shoboyede, Elder Wole Oyelese, Dr. Remi Akitoye, Dr. Ademola Dominic, Mr. Emmanuel Da-silva, Hon. Dare Adeleke, Capt. Tunji Shelle, Mr. Abiodun Ejamai and Mr. Adriano.
Chief Joju Fadairo, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, Engr. Tony Ojesina and Ogun State Chairman of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr. Gbolade Osinowo were with the ex – President to receive his guests.
The delegation later had a closed door meeting with Obasanjo.
  • Obasanjo urges African leaders to ensure peace

•Ex-president seeks $100b lifeline for Africa from China

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo said yesterday that the only way there can be peace and security in Africa is for the continent’s leaders to spearhead it.

He also sought $100 billion lifeline for African nations from China within 10 years.

He, however, asked Africans to learn clarity of thought and discipline from China.

Obasanjo made the submissions in a paper at a forum organised by Gusau Institute, in collaboration with the Centre for Nigerian Studies at the Institute of African Studies, Zhejiang Normal University, China.

He said for poverty reduction, Sino-Africa relations should enter into strategic relationship and partnership.

His paper was titled: “Sino-Africa relationship: New era for partnership on peace and security, governance and poverty reduction”.

The ex-President, who attended the forum with her daughter, Funke, however, was unable to interact with reporters at the event because many dignitaries formed a wall around him and escorted him to his vehicle after the opening ceremony.

But he said: “Wherever the conditions for peace, security, and stability is lacking, there can never be durable peace, security and stability.

“Peace, security and stability in any society can be ensured by the people of that society, spearheaded by the leadership of the society.

“It is when the leadership shows the way that the citizenry will follow and outsiders will render assistance and helping hand.

“African leaders will spearhead their peace, security and stability architecture and programme and as it has happened in the past, it is then the Chinese will be able to render appropriate helping hands, based on the requests and desires of African leaders.

“At Africa’s request, training and equipping military and security forces must not be left out.

“We take it that peace, security and stability have been established with appropriate and required actions taken. And this can only happen within the context of good governance.

“But good governance will not happen without good leaders imbued with nationalism, selfless commitment and nationwide view of responsibility, obligations, duties and nation-induced worldview and global programme.”

He said for poverty reduction, Sino-Africa relations should enter into strategic relationship and partnership.

He recommended a $100billion lifeline for African nations within a period of 10 years.

He added: “In this, strategic arrangement of three areas of resources coming from China to Africa, i.e. grant, short-and-medium term concessional loan and long term loan should be evolved and strengthened.

“Again, I see three areas that must be covered i.e, education, skill acquisition and capacity development, infrastructure and trade.

“For instance, it has been estimated that Africa needs some $90billion for infrastructure every year. It will not be a bad idea if China can provide $10billion of that amount every year for a period 10 years in the first instance.

“It will be about 10% of the estimated need for infrastructure but it will be impactful. All these can be done through China Development Bank, China Exim Bank and the proposed Infrastructure Development Fund along with the World Bank.”

Obasanjo said Africa needs China in order to be able to develop faster.

He said: “I have no doubt in my mind that Africa needs China, indeed, Asia, as they need us. Anybody who understands the depth of the Chinese immersion into the Confucian philosophy, their ability to stay focused and stick to longer term plan will not cast away such relationship

“Again, what can Africa learn from the governance system and style of China? Here, I am not on ideological trail, rather I am on efficiency, effectiveness, performance, service delivery, commitment and focus.

“If the Chinese have done it and are doing it at home, we can learn from them and they can impart to us their system, method and service that can be grafted to our existing and make a desirable change for us.

“Within a space of about one generation from 1981 to 2012, China has lifted 500million people from poverty, the highest level of such feat in the history of humanity. China has been hugely successful in poverty reduction effort and China has a lesson to teach any developing country who cares to learn.”

Founder/ Chairman of Gusau Institute Lt. Gen. Aliyu Gusau(rtd) asked Africans to develop homegrown solution to conflict management.

Those at the session included ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and the Managing Editor, News Agency of Nigeria, Bayo Onanuga among others.

  • Obasanjo calls for solution to mass killings in Nigeria

As high profile Nigerians continue to pour into Jos over massive killings in Plateau communities, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that the right machinery should be put in place for solution.

According to the former president, human problems need human solutions and Nigeria must find solution to massive killings across the country.

Obasanjo spoke on Wednesday when he paid a condolence visit to Gov. Simon Lalong in Jos.

Obasanjo who conveyed the condolences of his family and his delegation  charged government at all levels to look for the causes of the killings.

“It is saddening  in this day and age that this kind of barbaric thing is happening in our own country.

“I have suggested and I will still say it again that we need to find out the cause of these mindless killings even among age old neighbours.

“There must be a cause or causes,  remote and immediate and we must deal with it.

“And if we must continue to multiply condolences upon condolences, we must look for the remote causes and deal with it.

“I believe this is a human problem and problems have human solutions, this is a human problem.

“I hope and plead that government at the federal level must collaborate with states, local governments and communities to find what are the causes so that we can deal with it,” he said.

He prayed for a cohesive society where everybody would be his brother’s keeper.

Lalong  appreciated Obasanjo for making out time to come personally to console the people.

Lalong said that he was particularly sad with the development because when he came on board, the Berom and Fulani signed a pact and made some recommendations on how to stay and live together in peace.

According to him, some of the recommendations are being worked on to be passed into law.

The Plateau Government had placed a 6p.m. to 6a.m. curfew on three communities of Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Jos South local government areas after massive killings in the past three days.

The police confirmed that 86 persons died in attacks which occurred on Sunday. (NAN)

  • Fasanmi to Afenifere: ignore Obasanjo

Afenifere chieftain, Senator Ayo Fasanmi, yesterday urged leaders of the socio-political organisation to avoid former President Olusegunn Obasanjo.

He noted that the former President’s agenda was at variance with the objectives of the Pan-Yoruba group.

The elder statesman said Obasanjo was seeking relevance, having outlived his political usefulness, adding that it is time for him to really go on political retirement.

Fasanmi, who spoke on phone, objected to the invitation extended to Afenifere by the former President to team up with him in his plot to frustrate the second term ambition of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Warning the group to beware of the antics of the General, the Afenifere chieftain recalled that Obasanjo once cajoled the group in 2003 to support his second term ambition, only to turn his back against the organisation after his victory.

He frowned at the disposition of Obasanjo to Yoruba affairs, regretting that he once described the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawle (MKO) Abiola as “not the messiah we want”.

Fasanmi doubted if Afenifere would embrace Obasanjo with open hands, recalling that one of its leaders described the former President as evil in his book.

He said if a section of Afenifere decided to team up with Obasanjo for next year’s elections, it would create fresh divisions in the larger fold.

Fasanmi said: “As far as I am concerned, Obasanjo has become a spent force. He wants to be recognised as the one directing the affairs of the nation at every stage: from the time he was military Head of State, civilian President, through (the late President Umaru Musa) Yar’Adua’s time to (former President Goodluck) Jonathan’s period. He has the feeling that he knows it all.

“I cannot recognise any invitation from Obasanjo. He described Abiola as not the messiah we were looking up to. Is Obasanjo the messiah now? I think he should retire. I know Obasanjo well. He cannot enjoy my support.”

The former Federal legislator advised Yoruba to be steadfast and support President Buhari in next year’s poll.

Urging the Afenifere leader, Chief Rueben Fasoranti and Ayo Adebanjo to ignore Obasanjo’s antics, Fsanmi said the former President was trying to sow new seeds of discord in the group.

He added: “Fasoranti and Adebanjo are my good friends. We were in the Jos convention of the Action Group (AG) together. We were followers of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Obasanjo is not sincere. We should not allow Obasanjo’s politics to divide us.

“We should be careful about Obasanjo. I have my reservations about him. Yoruba must come together, but not behind Obasanjo; Obasanjo can’t lead us. He was a minister, military Head of State and civilian President. The honour that was conferred on Abiola by President Buhari should have been done by Obasanjo. He did not do it.

“We thank President Buhari for doing this. We should support him and not Obasanjo’s agenda. Obasanjo should go into retirement. He only wants to be seen and heard.”

Fasanmi also lauded the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the success of its national convention.

He said: “Contrary to expectations that things would fall apart at the convention because of the rancour that attended the earlier congresses at the ward, local government and state levels. There was also the issue of the complaints by the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) members that had dominated the media for some time.

“So, all eyes were on the party last Saturday as it went into the convention. But the leaders were able to manage these issues maturely and the convention ended well. This is highly commendable.

“President Buhari, APC governors, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and some other leaders of the party particularly deserve commendation for displaying sagacity in successfully managing those tough issues. It is hoped that the party will build on this feat as it faces the 2019 elections.”

Senator Fasanmi also congratulated Adams Oshiomhole, saying: “The ‘no losers’ attitude of the chairman (Oshiomhole) is the way to go.”

  • Tinubu to Buhari: ignore Obasanjo

All Progressives Congress( APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday asked President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore any letter from former President Olusegun Obasanjo and seek re-election.

Obasanjo, in an open statement, urged Buhari to stay off the race next year and become a statesman. But, to Tinubu, the former President is a busybody and not a democrat whose letter to Buhari had been marked as “not delivered”.

He said the successful hosting of the party’s national convention had proven wrong those who predicted its explosion.

He insisted that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party( PDP) was a party of the past which had been deserted.

Tinubu, who spoke shortly after the inauguration of the new National Working Committee of APC, led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole,  said Obasanjo had no democratic credentials to ask Buhari not to run.

He said: “If anybody must blame you at all; it’s over-democratisation. Those who asked me not to follow  and support a General should better look at their house; it has been deserted; it is a house of frustration and migration to other parties.

“I remember one Uncle backdoor, who has been a General himself and who has been elected President; I call him election rigger.

“ Let us compare the two of you. The man had the temerity to write a letter, not to the post office. We said, ‘no; we are not using the post office like that anymore, we are now using email. Your letter  is not delivered, you are analogue’.

“If he had the temerity to say Buhari must not run again, in which party? Thank God he is not a member of our party, we hold our future in our hands. What is your business, busybody? Unfortunately, he has torn the card of his previous party, his own legacy. So, he has none anymore.

“Now we have a General that they asked me not to follow. They said if you call yourself  a democrat, don’t follow this man. I said I am not mad enough to listen to your lies. Thank you Muhammadu Buhari for the job you are doing up till today.

“You have not set half of the records of this General who is not a democrat. He does not know the meaning of democracy. You have not tried to dismantle the National Assembly and impeach or remove a governor with six out of 38 members. You have not done criminal assault on democracy and they are writing letters.

“Today, through convention, we have changed the leadership of our party, but not at gunpoint as it was done to Mr. Audu Ogbeh.

“Our new elected National Chairman, our new elected national executives, to my friends the governors, to my dear citizens and members of our great party, the challenge is confronting us. We thank God that we have been able to be strong enough to stop 16 years of their  looting and broken promises. There is no  way we face 16 years of looting, abuse of power , denial,  hunger and be able to perform within three years.

“Mr. President, we thank you that you have offered yourself again, run, contest, you must.”

Tinubu said he almost doubted if the convention would hold until he was proved wrong by the commitment and dedication of the National Convention Committee, headed by Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State.

He added: “Sometimes a steel can melt. Mr. calculator, thank you; Badaru, you have delivered. The pigs and their fortune tellers said there will be explosion today. They predicted that our party will fall apart; that we will never see this party again. You navigated a very complex situation since you became the chairman of this convention committee.

“In fact, a week ago, I almost changed my name to Thomas because I doubted if it was possible to hold this convention today. I gave you  a call, are you set? You said ‘no, Asiwaju. Even though I have not spoken to the President, we are doing fine.’ Thank you to all of you (all the members) that showed dedication and commitment and good party leaders to deliver today for us. May God bless you.”

Tinubu said the APC had come of age within a short time.

He said: “To our party members, in less than five years, our dream of a united party came to fruition. That we need a very strong party to face the party of the past who had spent 16 years of our precious life to demolish our economy, frustrated our people and led us almost astray. We said then: ‘enough is enough.’

“We came together; they called us all sort of names, they said it was impossible. We bunched together with just a great symbol of our party, the broom. We brought the revolution about, we got an Army General (retired) to lead us among other Generals.

“Some of them called me, they said ‘we don’t want the General’. One member said: ‘It cannot be General; he was   tired of the Generals. I said until we finished with Boko Haram and looting we need one more General at least. Sai Baba and you lived up to the expectations in facing all the challenges.

“Cast your mind back, dear members. When we came together, there were 12 cases in court to stop us from being registered, to stop us from bearing our name (APC), and we said these people in court were the headache of Nigeria and we said they needed a cure , they needed the medicine of APC.

“Here, I must thank the Judiciary for being steadfast in the face of all intimidation, threat. And now, INEC registered the party, they registered our name. We marched on and led by this simple-minded General who is today  a great democrat.”

Senate President Bukola Saraki said: “With Oshiomhole, I can see that there is hope and a future in what he has promised. We look to the future and as we do that, we must ask ourselves, ‘how have we been successful so far? How were we able to win an election against all forms of opposition?”

“We did it because we were courageous and because we had leadership led by the President. We did it because we came together united and with a focus and direction. We did it because we made sacrifices and worked as a team. That was what we did to make this achievement. Can we do it again? Of course, we can. We do have challenges, but the responsibility of leadership is to tackle challenges and take them head-on. It is irresponsible of leadership to take on challenges and find solutions.

“You have spoken so well by admitting that there are challenges and I am happy that you promised to set to work to address those challenges. These are those who are supposed to be here because we need everybody. We want everybody so that we can carry on with the assignment that Nigerians have given us. The intention of all of us is to make Nigeria better and move forward.

House Speaker Yakubu Dogara said: ”Oshiomhole’s leadership skills will be tested and the job is neatly cut out for him. The challenges the face are enormous.

“But there are no challenges that have no solutions and if we search deeper, we will definitely find solutions to all the challenges confronting this movement.

“I know that with the deep knowledge and rich pedigree that he brings to the table, by the grace of God, we will bid bye to most of our problems.

“One issue that I want to dwell on is the issue of justice, which we know Mr. President stands on. He stands for the common man. It is, therefore, very important the new leadership creates equal opportunity for the weak and the strong.

“Challenges will come, but we must always rise against them. I want to also charge you to maintain the culture of democracy, which is conflict, compromise, consensus and progress. Without conflict, there cannot be progress.”

  • 2019: Obasanjo meets Yoruba leaders, visits Bode George

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday met with leaders of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, and other political leaders in the South West on the way forward for Nigeria.

The meeting, which was held behind closed-doors at the Lekki residence of the Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, lasted for almost two hours.

Those at the meeting included a former governor of Ogun and the Director-General of Atiku Campaign Organisation, Chief Otunba Gbenga Daniels; a former governor of Ondo, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and Chief Kenny Martins.

Others included Sen. Femi Okunrounmu, Chief Oyewole Fashawe, Akin Oshuntokun and Dr Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu.

Also at the meeting were Prof. Banji Akintoye; Dr Amos Akingba, as well as Afenifere Secretary, Mr Yinka Odumakin.

Obasanjo, clad in a navy blue Agbada, however declined to speak with newsmen after the meeting.

But the Afenifere leader, Adebanjo, told newsmen that the meeting was about strengthening unity in Yoruba land ahead of the 2019 general elections and beyond.

He said that there was the need for elders and leaders in the region to cast their differences aside and stand as one to chart a new course for the country.

“The meeting was nothing more than the fact that Nigeria must move forward.

“There must be unity to destroy mediocrity and dictatorship.

“What is important is that we have our common goal. We are not endorsing candidates yet. We must agree and be united first, and that is what we are trying to achieve.

“If you are not united, you cannot achieve anything. And that primarily was the essence of the meeting,” he said.

Adebanjo said the leaders at the meeting had fruitful discussions on the way forward for the Yorubas and the country, describing the meeting as an achievement.

Convener of Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare, said the meeting was about the way forward for the country at these critical times.

He explained that he and others met on fashioning the way forward for the country.

Bakare said that since it was a closed-door meeting, he would not provide details.

Asked if it was not strange sitting with Obasanjo whom he had always criticised, he said his criticisms of Obasanjo was not borne out of animosity but how to do things right.

He added that his faulting Obasanjo in and out of office did not mean he was his enemy but a call for collective reasoning for the interest of the nation.

Earlier, Obasanjo visited a former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, to condole with him over the recent death of his son, Dipo.

The former president was accompanied on the visit to George’s Ikoyi residence by some of his aides and loyalists.

Members of George’s family expressed pleasant surprise at Obasanjo’s visit, saying it marks an end to the long-standing rift between him and the PDP chieftain.

Obasanjo urged George to take solace in God over the demise of his late son.

“We cannot query God, but to only take solace in what He has done for you.

“If this did not happen, who knows what next would happen.

“I have not been around but it was on my mind to come over and commiserate with you and the family.

“May God grant the deposed eternal rest,” he said.

Reacting in an emotion-laden voice, sister to the deceased’s father, Alhaja Majolagbe George, declared the rift was over between Obasanjo and her brother.

She said the family was shocked and surprised by the former president’s visit, saying it has ended years of frictions between the two.

  • Obasanjo is Nigeria’s most hypocritical former leader – Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has accused former President of being the most hypocritical former leader of the country following his attempt to hijack the movement for political change.

He stated this in Abuja on Saturday at a dinner organised by the International Press Institute (IPI).

“Obasanjo has crossed the red line and I will launch a publication to expose him on July 3 at freedom park in Lagos,” Soyinka stated.

He is trying to hijack a recovery process he is least worthy to lead.

    More details soon
