Obaseki’s CPS resigns in protest five months after appointment

Andrew Okungbowa, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) of Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, has resigned from his position.

He cited his dissatisfaction with the way he was treated as the reason for his resignation.

Okungbowa’s appointment was announced by Osarodion Ogie, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), just five months ago.

Okungbowa’s three-paragraph resignation, which was obtained on Tuesday, December 5, in Benin by our reporter, was dated December 4, 2023, and addressed to Obaseki.

The CPS, who was appointed on July 25, 2023, said: “I write to formally inform you of my resignation from my position as CPS to the governor, with immediate effect.

“I am most grateful for the privilege and opportunity to serve the governor and the state. Please, accept my kind felicitation.”

Our reporter gathered that Okungbowa was not comfortable with the fact that the Edo governor rated much higher, and treated quite better, the unprofessional social media influencers in Government House, Benin, which was described as unacceptable.

It was learnt that some high-ranking officials of the Edo government attempted to intervene in the situation, but the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) had already made up his mind.

He said Governor Obaseki had met with him in Lagos and requested that he join his media team to support his Special Adviser on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, in preparation for the crucial September 21, 2024 governorship election, saying that he was later treated with disrespect.

Obaseki’s anointed governorship aspirant, Ighodalo, hires interpreter to address kinsmen

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s anointed governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo, has hired an interpreter to address his Esan kinsmen.

Lagos-based Ighodalo, a lawyer; who hails from Ewohimi, Esan Southeast Local Government of Edo State, was at his ward in his hometown, according to a viral video, but he could not speak Esan language, while he still described himself as a true Esan boy.

The governorship aspirant (Ighodalo), said: “I do things in Esanland, because we are not noisy. My brother is here, I am here, my parents were here. I am a true Esan boy. I am not going to use home boy, because they have used it badly. I am an Esan boy.

“I’m a true Esan boy. I am a true Edo boy. I am a true Nigerian. This is what I am. Since 2008, I have been in the economic team of the state, starting from the administration of former governor Adams Oshiomhole. Since Godwin Obaseki came in as chairman, Economic Team, I have been coming to Edo State to support and advise the government.

“I have been advising since 2008, which is 15 years ago, which means I came into Edo State, five, six, so many times a year for government business, not to talk of my own business. So, people can say what they like. Because we are not noisy, and because we are not jumping from one ‘mama put’ to another, does not mean am not a true Edo boy.

“This issue of an Edo boy, this issue of a true son of the soil is in the heart.

There are many of our brothers and sisters in the diaspora who are more Edo than many of them who live here. So it is in the heart, it is what you do in your heart, it is not how many pepper soup joints you go. So, all those of us in the diaspora, those of us in the diaspora in Nigeria, diaspora abroad, all the best hands must come to develop Edo State.

“Someone cannot sit in the village or in ‘mama put’ and say the rest of us cannot come and develop our state. It is not done. We must all come together and develop Edo State, plus the people in ‘mama put,’ plus the people in Canada, we must come together and develop Edo State.”

Senator Oshiomhole, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, also a governorship aspirant on PDP’s platform, hail from Edo North, while Obaseki is an indigene of Benin in Edo South.

Noting efforts over the past seven years to transform the creative and entertainment sector, Obaseki said, “The situation we met was one that people, especially the young creative minds wanted to run away from the State and Country. 30,000 Edo youths were trying to cross over to Libya. As an administration, we began to build and promised 200,000 jobs.

“The jobs were not coming from the government but from activities that the government created and encouraged. We focused on culture and creativity. We created the policy, enabling the environment, institutions.

“We created the Edo Skills Development Agency (Edojobs) as a platform to launch Edo youths to embrace the creative business. We focused on creating the atmosphere, facilities and equipment, building a sound stage, studio and editing suites. The Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative hub is a facility powered 24/7 with an IPP.”

On reforms in the education sector, Obaseki noted, “In Edo State, over the last five years, we have re-enacted basic education, ensuring foundational education is solid as we established EdoBEST.

“As a government, we intend to focus on what is important as our population of 5 million has over 70 percent of youths; we are focusing on what interests them and gives them hope. We will continue to support the creative industry to create quality production. We are doing this in the agricultural, sports, health, film and many other sectors across the State’s economy.

“We are optimistic and believe that all our efforts in the creative industry are sustainable. As long as we continue to create something good with high quality, people and corporate entities will want to associate with us.”

On his part, the Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Alhaji Adebayo Thomas commended Governor Obaseki for putting the creative industry on the path of growth.

He noted that “Edo State International Film Festival is the first any State has established in Nigeria. This is the first governor that has taken over our responsibility by starting a film festival in the State. We appreciate him and ask him to ensure its sustainability and continuity while out of office. Edo State is the only State in Nigeria that has a State film festival.”

Adebayo added, “In Edo today, following the facilities on ground, film makers can produce 1,000 films. Creativity must not be destroyed but used to promote our moral and cultural values.”

Obaseki should have discussed successor choice with me, says deputy governor

Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has said Governor Godwin Obaseki should have discussed his choice of a successor with him, accusing his principal of “intimidation” and “harassment”.

Shaibu made this known on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme yesterday.

He insisted that despite his not-so-smooth association with his principal, it is his constitutional right to contest the number one office in the state.

The deputy governor said” “He (Obaseki) said I am the type of deputy governor any governor will wish to have. So, what has changed? What has changed simply is that I want to be the governor of Edo State.

“Possibly, maybe he (Obaseki) wants somebody else. In a situation like that, what you do is not intimidation, it is not harassment; you call a family together, you call all of us (aspirants) together and give us reasons why you feel certain things should be. Tell us what you want. You don’t intimidate, you don’t harass.”

Obaseki, APC senator disagree over Edo govt’s spending of N7b on diesel

Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, and the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District, Monday Okpebholo, have disagreed over the Edo government’s spending of N7 billion on diesel in three months to fuel Edo City Transport Service’s (ECTS’) palliative buses.

The senator, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also accused Obaseki of misappropriating the N5 billion petroleum subsidy removal allocated to Edo state by the Federal government.

Okpebholo spoke on Tuesday, November 21, at the 25th priestly anniversary and book launch of Very Rev. Fr. Theophilus Idebaneria Itaman at Lumen Christi International High School, Uromi in Edo Central senatorial district.

He said: “The wasteful spending by Obaseki’s administration on diesel could have been spent to fix the terrible roads in Edo State.

“I am calling for accountability, honesty, transparency, and efficiency in the allocation of Edo State’s resources by Obaseki.”

The senator, who donated ten laptop computers at the book launch, urged Edo residents, especially the electorate, to vote for the eventual governorship candidate of APC during the September 21, 2024 election, to ensure good governance.

Edo governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Andrew Okungbowa, however, described the allegations as very unfortunate but hinted that the Edo government would soon address a news conference on the matter.

Obaseki decries inflation, dollarisation of economy

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has decried the surge in inflation and dollarisation of the economy.

He spoke while delivering his keynote address at the Delta State Executive Retreat 2023 with the theme: “Delivering the M.O.R.E Agenda for advancing Delta: Strategy and Enablers”, held in Asaba, Delta State.

Obaseki said: “Everything we do today is based on the dollar exchange rate, and it’s like most of our existence depends on what we import. Imagine a country of 200 million people that has to depend on an external economy.

“We spend about $40 billion a year in this country and you would expect that it should be enough for any country to develop but no, today, we earn less but our demand for foreign exchange is more.

“We spend about $2 billion paying school fees abroad, $3 million for health care treatment abroad, about $500 million buying milk and milk products, and about $10 billion importing food. We no longer earn dollars as we used to, but the dollars keep going up. We will deal with inflation for a long time.”

Orbih: Obaseki won’t be allowed to impose successor

The cracks in the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) widened yesterday.

The legacy coalition, led by the National Vice Chairman, Southsouth, Chief Dan Orbih, warned Governor Godwin Obaseki against imposing a successor.

The immediate past Edo PDP Chairman declared that Obaseki would not have his way ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

At a meeting held at his residence, Orbih said: “The new group, Legacy Coalition, is made up of members of PDP before Obaseki joined us on June 19, 2020, some founding members of the party who earlier left, and politicians who came into PDP with Obaseki from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“With last Saturday’s victory of PDP’s Senator Douye Diri in the off-season governorship election in Bayelsa State, PDP’s governorship candidate can also win the September 21, 2024 election in Edo State despite having APC’s President Bola Tinubu, through proper planning, not minding the fact that Obaseki coming into Edo PDP divided the party.

“We have realised that we have challenges in Edo PDP. We have also realised that we have our destiny in our own hands.

“The next Edo governor, through your (legacy coalition members’) support will be somebody who will not ask you to introduce yourself before he will recognise you.

“We are going to have a governor who has been part of us and will remain part of us. We want a governor who will know the challenges that we are facing as a state and people.

“One of the reasons I am no longer as frequent as I used to be in Benin City is that each time I look at what we are facing today, I bleed in my heart.

“There was a PDP that was united in love, before the election of Obaseki, but he joined us and divided the party.

“With the faces here, I am convinced that the way forward for PDP to retain power is to elect somebody in this group as the next governor of Edo State.”

A member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of PDP, Charles Idahosa, said the party must communicate adequately with the national leadership.

Idahosa expressed displeasure over the face-off between Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu while condemning the decision of some PDP leaders in Edo, who opted not to condemn Obaseki’s dictatorial tendencies.

The legacy coalition also had two ex-members of the House of Representatives from Edo: Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama and Sergius Ogun, as well as a former Edo Women Leader of the APC, Dr. Esosa Amadasun; an ex-Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Frank Okiye and a former Commissioner, Orobosa Omo-Ojo.

A senatorial candidate of PDP in Edo North, Pascal Ugbmohe and many ex-chairmen of local government councils are also members of the legacy coalition.
