    Obaseki’s era

In Edo, an era is ending. And a new one is beginning. For close to eight years, the man who has called the shots in this state with great history is Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole. Sirens announce his arrival and departure from events. The state feeds him, clothes him, ensures his security and sees to it that he is in good health. He decides people’s fate. In short, he can be likened to the generalissimo.

Like everything which has time, the Oshiomhole era is drawing to a close. It will in a matter of weeks become the Godwin Obaseki era. Edo has chosen a new generalissimo, with the help of Oshiomhole. He will be crowned in November.

The comrade-governor can now take a deserved rest with his beautiful wife Iara. I recommend that His Excellency and Iara should go to the Caribbean and have a time of their life. The comrade governor should let his guards down and live as though he is in his late 30s.

Before leaving for the Caribbean, ?he should hold a major thanksgiving service, aside the victory party where he danced like it was going out of fashion. He has had eight good years as governor. He has done so much good for his people and to crown it all, he is leaving the state in the hands of a trusted ally.

With Obaseki, Oshiomhole has won a major battle. He can be rest assured that his back is covered. Not that they will not have disagreements but I doubt if they will have the type that will mean every day we will be served one real or created scandal or the other, as would have been the case if Osagie Ize-Iyamu had won.

The campaigns were raw and rough. Though there were several candidates, it was clear to the discerning that the race is two-horse. And the duo wasted no time on other candidates. Obaseki abused only Ize-Iyamu, who also did not waste his time trading insults with any other person than the man credited with being the egg-head behind Oshiomhole’s economic team.

In the fight for the Government House, history was thrown in the ring. We were reminded that Obaseki’s great grand-father betrayed the Oba of Benin— and by extension the Benin kingdom— when he accepted to be the sole administrator of the kingdom after the British invasion. So, Edo people were told that someone from such lineage should not be supported to rule Edo. At a point, a film by Lancelot Oduwa-Imasuen on the history of Benin kingdom was even circulated to show to the people that the so-called act of betrayal is not the figment of anyone’s imagination.

The exciting Edo race saw Africa’s richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote being punched. Those who did this believed he backed Obaseki. They asked him to leave Edo alone. They said they did not want a governor who would be hopping in and out of Dangote’s private jet.

Ize-Iyamu told us Obaseki was a “typical green horn”, who should be rejected in the September 10 election because Oshiomhole could easily manipulate him. He described our dear Osho baba as a Pseudo Comrade, whose candidate should be rejected for subjecting the people to untold hardship in the past seven and a half years. He also described Obaseki as Oshiomhole’s puppet. He challenged the outgoing governor and Obaseki to explain how they allegedly depleted the state’s treasury.

Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Chief Dan Orbih told us that the governor spent N11.6 million to “buy drinks” for President Muhammadu Buhari; he wondered how Buhari, a Muslim, could be bought alcohol.

The insults were not one-sided. We were told Ize-Iyamu served in the administration of Chief Lucky Igbinedion and was part of the rot of that era. We were also told that Ize-Iyamu was a cultist in his days at the University of Benin (UNIBEN). His membership of the Pyrate Confraternity co-founded by the respected Prof Wole Soyinka, who by the way is a great friend of Oshiomhole, was interpreted to mean he was a member of a dreaded secret cult.

His explanation that Pyrate or Seadogs was not (and is still not) a secret cult as it was well-known to the authorities of the universities where it operated did not stop his traducers from continuing to repeat the allegation. To buttress their point, they referred to the fact that he was expelled from UNIBEN at some point after an acid attack on a student. He gave his explanations, but still the allegation kept being thrown in the mix.

Aside the cultism issue, we were also told that Ize-Iyamu had answers to give to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) about some financial malfeasance.

Ize-Iyamu sold himself as the experienced one. As a former chief of staff and secretary to the state government (SSG), he said he had all he needed to swing into action from day one.

One fact that was shown clearly in this race is that for Ize-Iyamu and his party, the real enemy went beyond Obaseki. They saw Oshiomhole as the one that must be cut to size. The pastor-turned-politician told us what an ingrate he considered Oshiomhole. He told us how he made Oshiomhole governor— a claim the comrade gleefully denied. Both men used to be pals. There may be some exaggerations here and there but the fact that Ize-Iyamu played a key part in the emergence of the former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President as Edo State governor is not that hidden.

Some may say the comrade governor should not rejoice yet, as Ize-Iyamu may spring a surprise by proving that the election was manipulated. To those who share such view, time will tell that they are wrong.

Given the apex court’s position that one witness each should be called from each polling unit, I am afraid nobody can prove election fraud again. It is impossible for a petitioner to be able to achieve this. The lawyers on the defendants’ side always ensure there is no enough time to call them to the witness box.

In the case of Rivers State, which for instance, has over 4,000 polling units, the petitioners had less than two weeks to call witnesses, who must also be cross-examined. The same rule applied in Akwa Ibom and others. This ensured no governor was removed on account of election petitions.

The rule will not be changed in the case of Edo State. I sincerely believe calling such number of witnesses cannot be done within the available time. I am afraid proving electoral fraud using the Supreme Court’s model will be impossible.

Now electoral bandits can even kill, maim, rape and raze and their opponents have all kinds of legal boundaries that time will not allow them cross successfully.

If I have my way I will just tell Ize-Iyamu not to waste his money because with the Supreme Court obviously applying the more arcane technical legality in resolving governorship tussles, he will only succeed in swelling the pockets of lawyers.

The Crown Prince of Benin has certainly put a closure on the election. It is won and lost and he is happy with the outcome, he told Oshiomhole, his wife Iara, Obaseki and leaders of the APC who visited him at his palace.

The Oba-in-waiting said: “I thank God and our ancestors for hearing the fervent prayers we prayed before the election and for bringing out somebody that will uplift our people and respect the tradition. I will tell the governor elect, keep to your promises, keep your words, put food on the table of our people, respect the traditional institution and ensure you build on what Oshiomhole has done.

“The passion and respect Oshiomhole has for our tradition is number one. Oshiomhole is today a Benin son of the palace. He is one governor who has catapulted the image of the Oba of Benin and our tradition to the highest level. Oshiomhole is a different type of governor and we urge Obaseki to emulate him.”

Like an obedient servant, Obaseki assured the palace of his unalloyed loyalty. His hand was clasped in some form of submission while appealing to the Crown Prince to always guide him and give him the deserved advice to succeed as governor.

“I will do my best and let me also appeal that you help me thank Comrade Oshiomhole because without his full support I would not have been governor elect today.”

My final take: PDP says its lawyers are working to prove that Ize-Iyamu won and my response is: I dey laugh o. With the precedent set by the Supreme Court, it will end in nullity because the burden of proof is unattainable.  Or, does Ize-Iyamu have a special wand to turn back the hands of time?

    Kudos for obaseki’s jobs plan

The Godwin Obaseki Support Group (GOSG has promised to suppport Edo Governor-elect Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Hon. Philip Shuaibu, in their bid to run a government of continuity and accountability.

The group hailed Obaseki for his plan to create 200,000 jobs in four years, saying that it is not an impossible mission.

The consultant to the group, Mr Taiwo Akerele, said the youths looked forward to the fulfilment of the promise.

He spoke in Benin-City, the state capital, during the post-election meeting of the group.

He said the next line of action for the governor-elect is to organisse series of policy dialogues on the various sectors of the economy for easy implementation of the blue-print.

Akerele said: “The task is for the group is to identify your members who have specialized training to support the incoming governor with capacity and human resource to ensure that all identified weak governance systems are bridged and the legacy of Adams Oshiomhiole is built upon.”

He advised the GOSG to serve as a policy think-tank for the next government as it is the normal practice in developing economies.

Akerele identified some of the major flaws of elections in Nigeria as voter apathy and low turn out, recalling that and that Edo state was not left out.

He advised citizens to always participate actively in elections to enable them hold whoever emerged as their leaders accountable for their deeds or misdeeds in office.

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the group, Mr Henry Imoghieme, thanked the members of the group for their door-to-door campaigns and their positive attitude during the poll.

Obaseki ‘ll build on Oshiomhole’s legacy, says Shaibu

THE Edo State deputy governor-elect, Hon. Philip Shaibu, has said that the next governor, Godwin Obaseki, will build on the legacy of the Adams Oshiomhole government.

Shaibu spoke at the weekend during a thank-you rally in Etsako West, Etsako Central and Etsako East Local Government Areas.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Obaseki, was declared elected in the September 28 election.

Obaseki pulled 319, 483 votes to beat Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 253,173 votes.

Shaibu assured the people of Etsako East, who defied a heavy down pour to listen to his message, that they should keep hope alive.

While noting that the Oshiomhole’s government has laid a foundation for good governance, he said the governor-elect and himself, will build on the foundation.

He said the incoming government has a workable blue-print before seeking for the people’s mandate.

Shaibu stressed: “We have an outgoing government that have been generally acknowledged to have performed credibly well. However, while we are challenged with this record performance, we are undaunted with it.

“We aim of seeking for your mandate is not only to chat a new map for the economy property of our dear state, but to also make life easier for us all.

“To me, haven been part and parcel of the Oshiomhole led government, we are well abreast of what have been done and what more is needed to do. This is to let you know that we are well prepared for the job.

“As you all know, we cannot do it all alone, so, while we solicit for your support and cooperation, I want us all to know that we have a lot to be hopeful for, both as a state and people.

“Legacy that will be left by Oshiomhole will not be insurmountable, we will not only be working to match his achievement, but also work to surpass it,” Shaibu vowed.

  • Lalong congratulates Obaseki

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, a lawyer, has congratulated the Edo State Governor-elect Mr. Godwin Obaseki on his victory.

He described the election as a victory for progressives.

In a statement by the Director, Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Samuel Emmanuel Nanle, the governor urged Obaseki to use his wealth of experience to take Edo to greater heights.

He urged the governor-elect to  build on the foundation laid by outgoing Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

“Governor Lalong, while congratulating the governor-elect, admonished the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, his party and supporters to accept the result as an open acclamation of the people of Edo State to remain a part of the change mantra.

“He, however, advised that the PDP is at liberty to test within the ambit of law the credibility of the election which has widely been adjudged to have been acceptable, free and fair in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“He concluded by praying for God’s guidance and wisdom for the Governor Elect as he assembles his team to provide qualitative leadership to positively make impact on the lives of the people of Edo State,” the statement added.

  • No room for opposition in my administration, Obaseki

No room for opposition in my administration, Obaseki

Edo State Governor-elect, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has ruled out having members of the opposition political parties as part of his government.

At the inception of Governor Adams Oshiomhole administration in 2008, he appointed three members of the Peoples Democratic Party as members of his cabinet.

Obaseki said he would reach out to the opposition in terms of explaining his administration policies to them.

He ruled out anything like government of unity as according to him, ‘I will not be able to accept anybody from the opposition as a commissioner in my cabinet.’

Speaking in an interactive session with journalists in Benin City, Obaseki said he would immediately put a team together for the purpose of preparing the 2017 appropriation budget

Obaseki noted that he had to prepare the budget to get on the ground running because he has only four weeks to present the budget before the legislative arm go on recess.

He said the focus of his administration would not change from the incumbent in terms of infrastructure and education but that job creation and empowerment would be added.

His words, “My first assignment is to put together a team and get appropriation for next year because we have to get to the ground running.

“The focus will not change in terms of infrastructure and education. The added focus will be on job creation and empowerment. That is why I need to focus on the budget and ensure I get enough appropriation to emphasis the social aspects which I promised during my campaigns. We will continue to build roads and refurbish schools. What is important is how to get people to work.”

Obaseki said 700 out 11,700 documented pensioners that retired under the state civil service were yet to be paid.

He explained that the 700 were those that retired from 2012 to 2015 and that vouchers for payment for those that retired from 2012 to 2013 were ready.

“Vouchers are ready for payment for 2012 and 2013 pensioners. We are waiting for a little savings to pay them. For 2104 and 2015, we need to find the cash to pay them. We pay our pensioners regularly. We will have to help the local government fiscally responsible. We will reduce their cost and increase their revenue so that they can meet their obligations including pensions and salaries.”

  • Obaseki: we’ll deliver

    Obaseki: we’ll deliver

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole said yesterday that the victory of the All Progressives Congress in Wednesday’s election has humbled Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and Dr. Raymond Dokpesi.

Governor Oshiomhole said Chief Tony Anenih narrowly escaped defeat.

He said the APC is committed to dismantling the rigging machine of those he described as political godfathers in the state.

Oshiomhole noted that Edo is the only state where election had been held in recent times without bloodshed adding that nobody died.

He said the victory had concluded his chapter in the struggle to end godfatherism.

He told reporters after the results were announced that “Over the last eight years, we have tried to orientate our people not just the voters but politicians that the season of election rigging where one or two godfathers wrote the results is over and we were committed to dismantling the rigging machine.

“We had a rerun in 2012 with all the godfathers on one side and new forces of change on my side, I won in all the 18 local government areas.  Our people have spoken loud and clear that they believe in democracy, they just don’t want to be beneficiaries, they want to be the drivers of the process. This was showed by the way they conducted themselves on Election Day.

“It is outstanding and remarkable that tensed as the election was, out of 18 local governments, we won in 15 decisively. Those who were loudest in making noise had been revealed where they stand in relation with Edo people.

“We have humbled Chief Tom Ikimi even in the local government he claimed to have created. We defeated Chief Raymond Dokpesi in his polling unit, his Ward and his local government. That reassures that the ruthless deployment of media machinery is not enough to distort or the will of Edo people to determine their choice.

“In Okada, the political family that has boasted that they would continue to govern this state and even compelled the state to adopt them as the queen of England whose birthday must be celebrated. In Okada, the APC was the preferred party by the people than that family in Okada.

“There is something unique in the way things have turned out. In Esan land, the senatorial zone of the PDP godfather, we won two out of the five local governments. We gave him a fight that he managed to escape.  He used the factor of his age to play on the emotion of the people. It is a victory for the people of the state. Edo people are now proud they can now determine who rules them and no one godfather can choose a leader for them. When you look at the propaganda, you will think we had fallen for the lion”

    APC greets Obaseki on victory

Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated the Governor-elect of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, on his victory at the just-concluded governorship election.

A statement issued by the APC State Publicity Secretary, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya, said the victory was well-deserved, especially in a keenly contested poll.

APC hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring the exercise went on smoothly.

The party noted that the simultaneous accreditation and voting system introduced by the commission largely reduced rigging and violence.

It, therefore, advised INEC not to lose sleep on the new strategy it adopted, but to improve on it for future elections, especially the November 26th governorship election in Ondo State.

APC appealed to its members in Ondo state to work assiduously for the victory of APC and it candidate, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

    Obaseki: I’m satisfied

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Godwin Obaseki expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election after voting yesterday, saying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has done a good job.

He expressed the hope that the peaceful conduct, large turnout of the electorate and adequate security that had characterized the exercise so far, would be sustained to ensure that it ended peacefully.

The APC flag bearer said: “We pray that there will be no crisis and spilling of blood, so that at the end of the day, it will end peacefully.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, also commended INEC and the electorate for the peaceful conduct of the poll.

Ize-Iyamu, who voted at 9.55 a.m. at Ighododo Primary School unit of Ward 5, Orhiomwon Local Government Area, urged PDP supporters to be vigilant and cautious and to monitor the process adequately.

  • Obaseki: The quiet tempest

    Obaseki: The quiet tempest

In this piece, Charles Ikhaghe examines the Edo State governorship election and highlights the factors that will make the All Progressives Congress (APC) win the poll.

after three decades of my existence I have had the privilege of going through most of the profiles on great minds and feel that some parallels can be drawn from what the great have in common.

Few that came to mind are:  Intelligence/character, Charity and prag-matism, Unwavering determination in pursuit of a beliefs, often described as focus.

Public spiritedness, actions affecting people in their environ-ment. How do these fit the characters of Godwin Obaseki? First among the noticeable traits is the welfare or public concern. His vision and purposeful mission inspired by a matchless passion for his beloved Edo State.

I must say here openly and honesty speaking I was privileged to be at the Benson Idahosa University (BIU) leadership chart with him in August last month and he made the most impressive presentation of how to be a leader in the contemporary world of ideas, issues, pro-grammes and people in the face of new global challenges.

Obaseki as head of the Economic and Strategy Team in Oshiomhole’s administration as proved that with the right leadership in place, Edo can be made a successful state. His eight years of selfless and dedication to service has also raised the bar of public service by ensuring that those policies that engender the good life of the citizenry of the developed societies can also be implemented in our clime. He has punctured the myth that our leaders are bereft of ideas to develop our country.

Very little is known of the personality of Godwin Obaseki before  emerging as the APC gubernatorial flag bearer in Edo State.

Though for more than seven and half years he has been one of backroomforces that has serve as the Chairman of the Edo State Government’s Economic and Strategy Team (EST) since 2009, without a salary because of his passion to serve his people.

In many parts of Africa and in South Africa in particular, where emerging leaders work underground before their emergence, it has become a model, to find such emerging leaders meeting the aspiration  of the teaming populace.

Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma an enigma African leader whose class Godwin Obaseki belong is an example. Jacob Zuma joined the African National Congress (ANC) and enlisted in the armed wing (Umkhonto We Sizwe), that fought the obnoxious apartheid policy till black rule was put in place in 1994. Gov. Fashola was underground working in the internal structure of Lagos State government and by extension Action Congress in Lagos State. It is his superlative view on public matters that soon endeared him to the eagle eyed Governor Emeritus Bola Tinubu as Jacob Zuma was made the leader of African National Congress in 2009.

While Zma was involved in the underground work with  President Tam Mbeki and others giving leadership to the ANC operatives inside South Africa, Godwin Obaseki is the engine hub that is propelling Oshiomhole work force.

Against this background, through his advice theComrade Governor has been able to pay pensions, build roads, school, hospitals and also brought a cement factory with jobs to Okpella etc.

The government was able to do all these because it cut cost by reversing the budget arrangement that existed before. The government  appropriated 60 per cent of the expenditure to capital projects and 40 per cent to recurrent spending. It then proceeded to block leakages in government.

The governor and his team looked inwards to boost internal revenue generation. The outcome, Oshiomhole saved N5b for the recurrent expenditure.

It is obvious that these three great sons of Africa (Jacob Zuma, BabatundeFashola and Godwin Obaseki) have many things in common and like Zuma has become the President of South Africa, Fashola became the Governor of Lagos State now Minister in the Federal Republic of Nigeria so the coast is getting clearer for our inestimable Obaseki to cruise into Dennis Osadebey House Seat of Edo State Gov. in September, later this year if voted for.

    Last line

When God blesses you financially, raise your standard of giving.

Life is measured by the number of faces who smiles when they hear your name.

Two things define you-your patience when you have nothing and your attitude when you have everything.

“I have no enemies to fight, you are all my friends and we share a common destiny”.

It is on these guiding principles that Godwin Obaseki hinges his gubernatorial campaign and he intend to govern on the foundation of these principles. Edo, let’s do it right by doing it right.
