A former lawmaker representing Oredo Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Razaq Bello-Osagie, has described the choice of Godwin Obaseki as the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), as the recipe for human and infrastructural development.

Bello-Osagie said the decision of the party to pick Obaseki was because of his intimidating pedigree and ability to deliver on electoral promises.

He hailed the leaders of the APC for ensuring a free, fair and transparent primary and the efforts at reconciling aggrieved aspirants.

The former lawmaker urged Nigerians to be patient with the administration of President Mohammadu Buhari as, according to him, Nigeria was already in the intensive care when he took over power.

He said President Buhari will reverse the economy through sound economic policies at different stages of implementation.

His words: “The nation is currently faced with a plethora of challenges occasioned by accumulated years of poor leadership, mismanagement and massive looting of our common patrimony by those who were entrusted with leadership positions.”

“What we have witnessed during those holocaust years was a wholesale collapse of our value system, culture of impunity and an appetite for primitive acquisition by those in authority”.

A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Razaq Bello-Osagie, has lauded the choice of Godwin Obaseki as candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he is the best man for the job, because he will build on the foundation laid by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Razaq said the decision of the party leaders’ to pick on Obaseki was because of his track record as someone who understands the workings of the economy.

He hailed leaders of the APC for ensuring a free, fair and transparent primary and for their efforts at reconciling aggrieved aspirants.

Razaq said the President is making the right moves to bring the economy on a firmer footing, through the crafting of sound economic policies now at different levels of implementation.

His words: “The nation is currently faced with a plethora of challenges occasioned by accumulated years of poor leadership, mismanagement and massive looting of our common patrimony by those who were entrusted with leadership positions.

•APC flagbearer challenges PDP to issue-based debate

The flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  Godwin Obaseki, has cautioned the factional candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to refrain from turning the campaigns into a media war.

Obaseki, who spoke through his press secretary, Benjamin Atu, was reacting to a publication in which Ize-Iyamu attacked Governor Adams Oshiomhole for campaigning for his party’s candidate.

The APC standard bearer emphasised the need for Ize-Iyamu to be focused and make the campaign issue-based.

Obaseki said he is ready and capable to take anyone the opposition decides to put forward as it’s authentic candidate in any intellectual and progressive contest.

He also challenged Ize-Iyamu to show Edo people his record in government.

Obaseki said: “PDP is the old testament of Edo State, we are in the era of grace and APC has come to offer grace. As a new testament state, we are not going back to Egypt, the land of iniquity and godfatherism.

“We, therefore, challenge any PDP leader in Edo State, who was proud of their reign in the state, to come out and publicly campaign for Ize-Iyamu or any other candidate that may also emerge from their factional primary this week.

“The excellent performance of Governor Adams Oshiomhole has made the PDP in Edo State and other PDP states to lose sleep and that was why the governor of Delta and others sent their thugs, some of whom have already been arrested in their effort to participate in the ongoing voter’s registration in Edo.

“APC is firm and unmovable, irrespective of the crafty preparation of the PDP”, the statement said.

  • Edo 2016: Fresh hurdles for Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu

Edo 2016: Fresh hurdles for Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu

For September’s governorship election in Edo State, Godwin Obaseke and Osagie Ize-Iyamu have emerged the candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) respectively, but there are fresh hurdles threatening their bids to succeed Governor Adams Oshiomhole, report Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu and Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan

THOUGH the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have concluded their primaries, leading to the emergence of Mr. Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as their candidates respectively, the issues that have trailed the results of the primaries have thrown up fresh hurdles for the candidates.

Before last week, most observers had said the results of APC and PDP primaries will, to a very large extent, make it clearer who will be Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s successor. Of course, both Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu were amongst top contenders in their parties but reports after the primaries show that except something is done quickly to reconcile the opposing stakeholders in the parties, the candidates and the parties may have more troubles than they ever imagined in their bid to take over Edo State Government House from the Comrade governor.

In the PDP, the trouble preceded the primaries. For example, before the primaries, the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum, Mr. Osaro Onaiwu, who was touted as an aspirant in Edo 2016 though he did not actually buy the nomination form of the party, shocked observers when he suddenly resigned his position, dumped PDP and pitched camp with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the PDP Governor’s Forum, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, Onaiwu had explained that he took the decision in order to pursue his future ambition.

Part of the letter reads: “Unto every time there is a season, and in line with this Biblical truth, I wish to inform His Excellency of my resignation, effective, June 21, 2016 as the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum.

“I am persuaded to call it quits in order to pursue my future endeavour in other capacity. During my years as DG of the Forum, I am consoled by the fact that my loyalty, competence and service were at no time in doubt, therefore will be leaving with gratitude. I wish to thank His Excellency and all his brother governors, present and former, for their support during my term as DG and wish the Forum the best.”

He told journalists that he was still contesting the governorship election “But I am going to fly the flag of the APGA in Edo State”.

In the ruling party, APC, where aspirants had consistently alleged Governor Oshiomhole’s endorsement of Obaseke, there was fear, long before the primaries that if Obaseke wins, the other aspirants may not only protest the result but may go ahead to fight against the party. As it turns out, Obaseke won and the other aspirants have alleged rigging and manipulation. Chris Ogiemwonyi and Kenneth Imansuagbon for example have called for a forensic analysis of the voting materials used for the primary, alleging that the votes were cloned.

While Ogiemwonyi accused the Masari-led Committee of deploying cloned ballot papers used for the conduct of the primary, Imansuagbon ‎has said the primary election must be cancelled if the APC is truly committed to winning the general election.

According to him, talks about post-primary reconciliation ‎is an exercise in futility as the only option is for the party to reverse the governorship primary.

“We are not interested in reconciliation. We are approaching the Hon. Bamidele Appeal Committee. We are praying them to cancel the election and do a fresh primary. If they don’t do it, what will happen to the APC will be disastrous. If the appeal does not take our plea, then we will take our protest to the court of the people,” he said.

He also said, “When Anenih rigged me out in the Peoples Democratic Party, I told him he would loss and the party lost. So, the Bamidele Committee should cancel the election on the grounds of immorality.”

He added, “It was scientifically and electronically manipulated. Watermark technology was used to manipulate the election. You will not see it during the day. You will only see evaporated ink that will vanish in two minutes.

“One should ask why, despite the fact that accreditation finished around 2pm, voting was delayed till around 7pm. Under the floodlight they had allocated the votes to Obaseki.”

Since then, we gathered that moves have been made to reconcile the stakeholders in the party to enable the ruling APC to contest as a united force.

Though the state party chairman, Anselm Ojezua, in a statement said a Reconciliation Committee chaired by a Board of Trustees member, Prince Malik Afegbua, was set up soon after the primaries to reconcile aggrieved members, there were indications that the committee may not have achieved speedy results.

Other members of the committee are former deputy governor, Lucky Imasuen, Austin Omofuma, Charles Idahosa, Theophilus Okoh, Senator Domingo Obende and Lawrence Okah. A source however said not much progress had been recorded by this committee as at Thursday morning.

Towards the end of the week however, there were feelers that President Muhammadu Buhari may intervened directly in the crisis.

The Nation reported on Friday that the President asked the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to meet with all the aspirants in the last governorship primaries and other stakeholders within 24 hours.

It would be recalled that the two aggrieved aspirants after the primaries, Ogiemwonyi and Imansuagbon, who took the matter to the Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele-led Appeal Committee, have threatened to drag the party to court or work against it if the committee and the party fail to nullify the primary.

As at the time of filing this report, it was not yet certain what the outcome of the appeal would be but Bamidele had said the committee was compiling its recommendations, adding that all the stakeholders invited met with the committee members and made oral presentations of the primaries.

How far this will go in resolving the matter remains to be seen.

    Ize-Iyamu’s many headaches

Even as his supporters continue to celebrate his emergence as the winner of last week’s PDP’s governorship primary election, the camp of Pastor Ize-Iyamu had a serious doubt cast on his going all the way to contest the general election, when early in the week, one of the claimants to the office of the National Chairman of PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, said his emergence as the party’s flag-bearer is illegal.

According to Sheriff, because the primary election purportedly held in the Edo State chapter of his party didn’t have his blessing and that of his executives, it should best be taken that the PDP, as led by him, is yet to conduct gubernatorial primary election in Edo State. He is, therefore, set to conduct a fresh exercise.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by him and his faction’s National Secretary, Professor Wale Oladipo, Sheriff urged the electoral body not to give legitimacy to the exercise as, according to him, it was a product of an illegal caretaker committee.

In another statement, the Sheriff’s group released a scheduled congress in Edo State to end on June 29, with the inauguration of congress committee scheduled for last Wednesday. Sheriff warned state chairmen and officers of the party to desist from meeting or having anything to do with the “illegal” caretaker committee and warned that anybody dealing with them is on his own.

Reliable party sources in Benin-City told The Nation that the Sheriff’s group is desperately reaching out to some party chieftains in the state, especially aspirants who contested and lost the last PDP governorship primary election in the state, to dump the Makarfi camp and seek the party’s ticket at the planned fresh primary election to be conducted tomorrow.

“We fear that serious confusion is imminent in the PDP here in Edo State. At a time when we should be plotting how to confront the ruling APC, a faction of the party has rejected the primary election held last week and is planning to conduct a fresh one.

In a bid to tear the party apart, they are now wooing some of the gubernatorial aspirants of the party who participated in the last primary election, especially Iyobosa Edebiri and Mathew Iduiyikemwen, to contest in their own primary. Should this happen, Edo PDP will be much divided against itself,” our source said.

The Nation also learnt that, aside from the threat posed by Sheriff’s plan to conduct another primary election, the camp of Ize-Iyamu is also worried about the likely reaction of INEC to the new development. Such is the anxiety that the group is said to be reaching out to Sheriff and his co-travelers for a truce.

“We are just hoping that this new development will not confuse INEC the more. Already, the commission has been making some funny statements over the state of things in our party. You will recall that it is yet to say categorically which of the two factions it will relate with. Given that one of the factions must submit the candidate’s name to INEC, we are worried.

There are so many court cases undecided and nobody can say when the judgement will start rolling in. This is why our candidate and his team are of the opinion that a truce with all warring factions is the best approach. If we have our way, I promise you there will be no fresh primary election in Edo PDP,” a party chieftain told The Nation.

The PDP candidate, Ize-Iyamu, is also struggling to shave off fears over his eligibility following allegations of his alleged involvement in the $155 million Mrs. Deziani Alison-Madueke campaign money scandal. Ize-Iyamu, according to reports, is undergoing investigation in connection with the alleged slush fund.

He was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as part of investigation into how the money was shared by some PDP leaders. Although he was interrogated and released by the anti-graft commission, there are allegations in some quarters within the PDP that he may turn out to be a problem for the party if more damaging revelations are made about the scandal.

“We hope our party had not knowingly played into the hands of Oshiomhole and the ruling APC with the election of Ize-Iyamu as our candidate. Knowing the ruling party, I can bet that they throw up this issue of his invitation by the EFCC when the campaign starts. I fear they may even use the EFCC to dig up salacious details of his alleged role in the scandal.

It is also not impossible that the opponent will ensure he is detained as the election approaches. If this occurs, what will happen to the chances of the PDP in the general election? Many of us are sincerely of the opinion that now that we can still correct our mistake, it is better for us to do so. A man with so many battles on his hands is not the best we can throw into the race,” our source said.

With so much to worry about so early in the race to Government House, pundits are of the opinion that it will not be an easy contest for Ize-Iyamu and his party against Governor Oshiomhole’s APC and its candidate, Godwin Obaseki.

  • Oshiomhole, Obaseki and challenge of reconciliation

Oshiomhole, Obaseki and challenge of reconciliation

Correspondent OSAGIE OTABOR, who witnessed the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary, writes on the challenge of reconciliation in the chapter.

Katsina State Governor Bello Masari has a piece of advice for the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC). After conducting the primary, which produced Mr. Godwin Obaseki as the APC governorship candidate, he advised party leaders to assist Governor Adams Oshiomhole in the task of reconciling aggrieved aspirants and other chieftains. Masari said reconciliation is necessary, so that the party can retain power in the Southsouth state.

It is an understatement. The atmosphere at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin-City, the venue of the shadow poll, was tense as delegates cast their votes. But, contrary to the prediction of critics, there was no violence. The exercise was free and fair.

As the delegates voted, they were monitored by the representatives of the 12 aspirants. The aspirants were Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Major General Charles Airhiavbere, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Blessing Agbomhere, Dr. Pius Odubu, Kenneth Imasuangbon, Comrade Peter Esele, Oserheimen Osunbor, Tina Agbarha, Austin Emuan, Emmanuel Arigbe-Osula and Prof. Ebegbue Amadasun.

Obaseki won. He polled 1618 votes to defeat his close rival, Dr. Pius Odubu, who got 471 votes.  Chris Ogiemwonyi came a distant third with 137 votes and Kenneth Imasuagbon got 247 votes.

Others did not get up to 20 votes. Charles Airhiavbere, secured 11 votes, Blessing Agbomhere, got five and Prof. Ebegue Amadasun had eight. Emmanuel Arigbe-Osula garnered 10 votes; Austin Emuan got seven votes, Peter Esele secured eight votes, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor garnered nine votes and Tina Agbarha got three votes.

Masari, who declared Obaseki winner, said all the aspirants were winners. He said: “They should regard themselves as winners. We have to learn to accept defeat and prepare for the next election. The winner should be magnanimous in victory. This is the first leg. I call on him to extend a hand of fellowship to other contestants. The rules and guidelines is that of simple majority. I hereby declare Obaseki as the winner of the primaries.”

Oshiomhole led the victory dance. But, the supporters of his deputy, Odubu, were not happy. The contest was actually between the governor and other aspirants.

Some political appointees, including commissioners who were sacked, were on the side of Odubu. To them, the outcome of the primary will teach Oshiomhole a lesson. But, their calculation failed.

Before the primary, propagandists had swung into action. They said the APC will lose the governorship election, if a politician does not emerge as the candidate.  Obaseki, however, proved his critics wrong when he began canvassing for votes.  The APC chieftains who teamed up with Oshiomhole were Hon. Razaq Bello-Osagie, Charles Idahosa, Theophilus Okoh, Pally Iriase, Peter Akpatason, Osarodion Ogie, Philip Shaibu, 18 lawmakers in the House of Assembly, and the Edo APC Caucus in the National Assembly.

Many issues were raised before the primary. Opponents alleged that Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) were being mopped up for N5, 000. There were allegations of  harassment and intimidation of delegates. Some people raised the alarm over an attempt to kidnap delegates. Some said delegates were being made to swear an oath of allegiance. Others alleged that there were plans to manipulate the delegates’ list.

During a pre-primary meeting  with delegates, Oshiomhole asked the aspirants to swear, if they had not induced delegates with money.

He said: “As for the allegation of people spending money, the truth is like what they said in the Bible: who will cast the first stone? Of the seven of you here seated, how many can put his hand on the Bible and say, ‘I have not induced delegates with money’?” But, Ogiemwonyi disagreed, saying that he only organised an empowerment programme for the poor.

The aspirants were shocked when they were informed that accreditation would be done in three centres. The purpose was to ensure a smooth accreditation. The accreditation began simultaneously at the three centres at about 11:30am. Edo South delegates were accredited at Agbado Primary School, while delegates from Edo Central were accredited at George Idah Primary School. Delegates from Edo North were accredited at Imaguero College.

There was heavy security at the venue of the accreditation. Buses were stationed at the centres to convey delegates to the stadium. After accreditation by each local government, the delegates were taken under tight security to the stadium to prevent anybody from joining the already accredited delegates. All the delegates presented their PVCs before they were accredited and allowed into the stadium.

Outside the stadium, various groups, which were stopped from entering, were drumming and dancing; singing the praises of their candidates.

Before voting Masari said 2,582 delegates were accredited, instead of the 2,771 names on the list. He said delegates were free to go home after casting their votes.

Voting started at about 6pm. Oshiomhole kicked off the exercise, followed by other statutory delegates. Tempers began to rise, when Imasuagbon and Ogiemwonyi, who were observing the voting complained that Oshiomhole was on the field. They accused Oshiomhole of intimidating delegates. They poured invectives on their agents for not being vigilant.

Osunbor, who came with his wife, sat unruffled. Other aspirants watched as the duo vent their anger. They told the Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, to ask the governor to return to his seat.

Imasuagbon said he has invested much in sharing rice to people and he had to protect his interest. Despite the complaint that persons not accredited were voting, the exercise went on.

Oshiomhole left when the counting of votes started. Ogiemwonyi and Imasuagbon left when it was clear that Obaseki would carry the day. They both refused to explain why they had to leave.

Comrade Esele congratulated Obaseki and left the venue with a promise to support Obaseki at the general elections.

Hon Akpatason said the alleged purchase of PVCs was a mere business transaction

He said: “Those are regular rhetorics. In any election, you must hear that; it has become part of politicking in this country. In any case, I am not sure we are going to use the PVC to vote. So, what is the relevance of the PVCs now? As far as I am concerned, it is totally inconsequential. As you can see, it is secret ballot.”

To Hon. Pally Iriase, “All the noise about collection of cards is neither here nor there. It is to be expected in this period that people will make all kinds of allegations. But we must take some of them with a pinch of salt, because nobody can be forced to give his voters card.

“As it is, the interest of Edo State has to come first. We know the terrible situation we faced up to 2008, when Edo was completely rotten – infrastructural decay was the order of the day; there was nothing working.

“We now had the opportunity to see a government that works.  We have seen a government that works and we expect in this exercise (primary) we that we will be able to pick who will carry on with the development that we have seen. That is why some of us have endorsed the candidature of Godwin Obaseki and we have worked to ensure that those who believe in us also follow suit.”

Oshiomhole described Obaseki as a sound person, who is not strange to governance. He said: “We have had what qualifies to be the very best (primary) that has been organised under the APC government since we assumed office and there is no question, the process has been very transparent, people have behaved very responsibly, delegates have conducted themselves very well.

“Today, we really have celebrated democracy. In terms of the controversies, I think part of the problem was also yours (media). For example, people alleged that people were buying PVCs. Now, the main criteria for accreditation in this (primary) election was the PVC. Was there any delegate who could not find his PVC to vote?  All of them used the PVC for accreditation, which means that people have their PVCs with them.

“We all now have to work together, which is something we all understood at the beginning or I believe those who contested understood. We all now have to work together to sell the ticket. I think that will not be a problem because Edo people know that we have a quality of service.

“The guy (Obaseki) is sound; he is at home with the issues. He is not a stranger to governance. I have worked with him for seven and a half years. He has been part of the system; he has been in the brain box . So, there is no space for learning; he is ready to hit the ground running. For me I feel fulfilled.

“The delegates won; the delegates have spoken.  Now, the party should be more united. We are ready to hit the ground running for the campaign and God willing, by September 10, Edo will, as usual reaffirm the bond between the people of Edo State and the All Progressives Congress “

Oshiomhole has scaled the first hurdle of securing nomination for the man who can deliver on electoral promises and consolidate on his achievements. He has shamed critics and proved that he understood the dynamics of politics. The PDP had prayed for the emergence of Obaseki as APC flag bearer. Its leaders boasted that Obaseki will not win the election. September 10 is indeed, Oshiomhole’s last battle.

Obaseki tasks Inec on voter’s registration

Edo State voters have been advised to take advantage of the voters’ registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Godwin Obaseki, who gave the advice in a statement issued by his spokesman, Ben Atu, said it is the only weapon that would qualify them to vote at the general election. He described it as “a call to duty for all eligible voters”.

Obaseki said: “The survival of democracy and the growth of Edo state depend on each individual being able to express his or herself by voting. No doubt, your vote is your right. but, if you do not register, you are not only denying yourself the right to vote, but also denying yourself the opportunity to determine the leader of your choice”.

He, however cautioned against double registration, which he described as a criminal offence and anyone who is caught in the act will be made to face the wrath of the law.

The APC flag-bearer who, also tasked the INEC to ensure a hitch-free exercise, appealed to the commission to avoid the usual logistics problems of fuel, lack of ink in the printers, laptop  failure and other excuses, which may affect the number of voters that would be registered on a daily basis.

He said: “The time is short and efforts must be made to ensure that people are not stranded due to failure or shortage of working tools”, Obaseki said.

Obaseki, however, called on the media, religious organizations, various women and youth groups, traditional institutions, and advocacy groups to intensify their campaign for mass mobilization and participation for the exercise.

Group urges Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu to pick women running mates

A women advocacy group, Women Situation Room Nigeria (WSRN), has urged the two major candidates in Edo State to pick women running mates for the election.

The contest is between Mr. Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

At a media session in Abuja yesterday, the group’s National Coordinator, Joy Onyesoh, said the group would be ready to mobilise women voters in support of any of the candidates that picks a female running mate.

Onyesoh also said the group would always be ready to mobilise support for female contestants in elections at all levels, irrespective of party affiliations.

She accused the existing political parties of denying women the needed leverage in electoral contests, saying they are always overwhelmed by their male counterparts during nominations.

According to her, the WSRN would be engaging the nation’s political parties in the next few days, with the view to articulating the rightful position of women in the political system.

Onyesoh said the group will demand a review of the constitutions of the parties for the purpose of reserving some party offices and elective positions exclusively for women.

She identified material inequalities and domination of party machinery by the men folk as some of the factors working against women’s active participation in the electoral process.

The coordinator appealed to the political class to stop the trend in which women are seen and treated only as singing and dancing groups at political rallies.

She called on political party administrators to consider making nominations to elective positions free for women in all political parties.

She added that the WSRN was already working on a position paper to be articulated into a bill for onward transmission to the National Assembly for consideration.

Onyesoh called on the government at all levels to increase the number of women appointees in their administrations, adding that the present empowerment options for women appear constricted.

A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Ondo State, Chief Olusola Oke, has congratulated the winner of the Edo State governorship primary,Godwin Obaseki.

He said Obaseki deserved the victory, stressing that it was another landmark in the history of democracy and the APC.

Oke in a statement by his media aide, Rotimi Ogunleye, also commended the leadership of the party for conducting a free and fair primary..

He said: “The election was free, fair and devoid of rancour common to undemocratic behaviours. It has confirmed that the APC treasures internal democracy and will commit itself to it

“All the contestants are winners. They have fought a battle of faith in good spirit of sportsmanship and believing the APC is one big family”.

He said the cause of democracy is better served in an environment where fair play, justice and level playground are encouraged.

The lawyer commended the APC leadership for organising a free, fair and rancour-free primary  typical of those in advanced democracy.

Oke said the primary has quenched the fire of rumour, unlike in Ondo State where some elements are causing confusion by dropping the names of the APC leaders who have endorsed them as candidates.

The aspirant urged Obaseki to be magnanimous in victory and be a rallying point for other aspirants and supporters of the party.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship Candidate in Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has kicked off a reconciliation move, ahead of the September 10 election.

Obaseki, Osarodion Ogie, the Directo-General of the Godwin Obaseki Campaign Organisation, and some APC leaders were in the private home of Dr. Pius Odubu to mend fences.

At the reconciliation meeting, the deputy governor told Obaseki and the party leaders that he will not leave the party.

Odubu said that, as a true party man, he is ready to work for the party and its candidate.

The aspirant, who came second at the primary, said what is paramount now is ensuring victory for the party and its candidate.

Odubu however, advised Obaseki and the party leaders to quickly move to reconciled aggrieved party members, especially the victimised ones.

Obaseki and Osarodion Ogie thanked the deputy governor for his maturity and promised to adhere to his advise.

Another team comprising the State Working Committee members and Governor Adams Oshiomhole is billed to meet with the deputy governor.

Announcing the result, The Chairman of the Election Committee, Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina, said Obaseki polled 1,618 delegates vote to defeat Governor Adams Oshiomhole deputy, Pius Odubu, who scored 471 votes, Kenneth Imansuagbon 247, former minister of state for works, Chris Ogiemwonyi 137, Major General Charles Airhiavbere (rtd) 11 votes, Blessing Agbonmeire five votes, Professor Frederick Amadausn eight votes,  Emmanuel Arigbe-Osula 10 votes, Peter Esele eight votes, Austin Emuan four votes Professor Osarheimen Osunbor nine votes and Mrs Tina Agbarha three votes.

Esele commended the excercise and urged his supporters to work for the success of the party in the election.

“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. This is also to give my support and good wishes for Mr G. Noghaghase Obaseki on his victory as our party flag bearer. Let us all join hands to support him in the general election”

Oshiomhole described the exercise as credible and that it is an entrenchment of the democratic principle of one man one vote.

“Having monitored and watched everything that has happened here. We are celebrating democracy, Edo is leading is leaving by example if you compare what has happened in some other places, obviously, this is an outstanding achievement. You will remember that this is where we launched one man one vote and what we have demonstrated today is a case of one man one vote and I am glad that the delegates won, the delegates have spoken, now the party should be more united now, we are ready to hit the ground running for the campaigns and God willing by September 10 I am sure Edo people will re-affirm the bond between them the APC.

“Every aspirant got recognition by the delegates; at least nobody went home without any vote. Like the chairman of the organising committee said, everybody won. Like i said, if you have 12 angels on parade and if you want to select    one, we have selected a candidate we all now have to work together which is something we understand from the beginning I believe everybody who contested understood, they now have to work together to deliver the ticket and I think that would not be a problem.”

On the winner, Oshiomhole said: “If you listen to the speech of the candidate, the guy is sound, he is at home with the issues, he is not a stranger to governance for seven and a half years he has been part of the system in the brain box there is no space for learning, the guy is already ready to go hot the ground leaning. For me I feel fulfilled but you know in Nigeria, people are always in a hurry to throw mud, the way the thing has gone, I am the media has shown it live and I am that Nigerians wherever they are in a position”

On the Spetember 10 contest with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which holds its primaries today (Monday), oshiomhole said   “There is no PDP, which of the factions are we going to face, you have one body, several heads even when they were potent, we defeated them so there is no cause for concern, we will go for the election, there are other parties in the state, PDP will not be an issue and I don’t think Edo people will forget the crime of PDP in a hurry not for the next 20 years in this state.”

In his acceptance speech, Obaseki  said: “Today is a great day for our democracy and for our party the All Progressives Congress (APC). It is a great day for development in Edo State. Today, we have commenced another phase in our journey into our brighter future. A future which will define us as as a modern and progressive state where every citizen is empowered with opportunities to live life to its fullness.

“I am indeed humbled by this nomination and will like to state that this is our collective victory and thank you all. This is only the beginning.

“The challenge is for us, to take the contest to the next level. As a party we must continue to work as a team to deliver victory at the September 10 Governorship election. And let me assure you that we will win.

“The administration of the Comrade Governor came on the heels of decades of mismanagement, unproductive and failed policies, all shrouded in excuses by the PDP past government. But in the face of these challenges, the administration dared to envision an Edo state that will become a leading economic centre in Nigeria where the people live in dignity, powered by a Government that is responsive to their needs. Today, we are proud that Edo stands out as a success story. We will build on That success and continue to live up to the metaphor of our state – The heart beat of Nigeria.”
