Obasi opts for Turkey or France

Chinedu Obasi may well now have to try his luck outside Germany in either Turkey or France after Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 deemed him surplus to requirement.

Obasi looked like staying put in the German Bundesliga on account of the influence of his agents Rogon.

But it now appears he may seek to play at a warmer place than Germany, where he has suffered several major injuries which have been mainly attributed to the cold weather there.

A Germany-based agent told AfricanFootball.com: “Obasi’s injury problems have been due largely to the cold weather in Germany. He now needs to move to a warmer place so as to continue his career.

“Already he has offers from Turkey and France and it is left for him to decide where he wishes to play come next season.”

The 29-year-old forward, who has represented Nigeria at U17, U20, Olympic and full international levels, moved to Germany from Norwegian club Lyn Oslo in 2007.

‘Unwanted Obasi will stay in Germany’

A top source at Chinedu Obasi’s former club Hoffenheim has  told AfricanFootball.com  that the Nigeria forward will remain in the German Bundesliga even after he was released by Schalke 04 because of the power and contacts his handlers wield.

Obasi has been widely linked with a move from Germany with many reports suggesting he could move to Turkey for a big pay day. However, a top source informed AfricanFootball.com that Obasi’s agents are so powerful that he will still remain in the German Bundesliga.

“Chinedu will stay in the German Bundesliga because he is working with very powerful agents here in Germany and at worst, he will move to another Bundesliga club,” revealed the source.

“Also, no one doubts the player’s ability, but his battle with injuries was the main reason Schalke let him go.”

The 28-year-old Obasi has been in Germany since 2007 and spent five years at Hoffenheim.

Beijing 2008 silver medalist, Chinedu Obasi, has experienced a turnaround at Schalke 04, following the sacking of Manager Jens Keller.

Under Keller, the 28-year-old was a bit part player, playing second fiddle to Sidney Sam and Mex Meyer in the team. However, since Keller’s departure a month ago, Obasi has started two of the last three games under manager Roberto Di Matteo.

The Chelsea champions league winning coach has used Obasi just once as a substitute and that was in his first game in charge against Hertha Berlin.

The Nigerian has started the last two games in a row against Sporting Lisbon and Bayern Leverkusen, picking up the man of the match award against Lisbon in the champions League.

While he struggled for goals and game time under Keller, he scored his first goal of the season against Sporting Lisbon under Di Matteo and he has three assists to his name.

Known for his pace and trickery, injuries have slowed down his career progress and last season he appeared just 15 times in the Bundesliga for Schalke 04 scoring three goals in the process.

    OBASI EXCITED OVER UCL STRIKE

Super Eagles striker Chinedu Obasi is excited to have scored the equalizer for Schalke in the 34th minute, bringing the scoreline to 1 – 1 after an assist by Germany international Dennis Aogo in the third round of matches in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Schalke 04 defeated Sporting Lisbon 4 – 3 at the Gelsenkirchen.

Three players with Nigerian background tasted action for the German representative – Chinedu Obasi, Dennis Aogo and Sidney Sam.

Five minutes after the restart, the goalscorer turned provider when he set up Klaas Jan Huntelaar, before Höwedes gave the home team a two – goal cushion on the hour mark.

The strike by Obasi was his first – ever goal in a European competition since he made his debut appearance on February 16, 2012 against Viktoria Plzeå.

Fit-again Obasi vows to make up for lost time

Fit-again Schalke striker Chinedu Obasi says he is ready to make up for lost time after what he describes as a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

The Nigerian, 27, moved to Gelsenkirchen on a permanent deal from rivals Hoffenheim in March 2012.

But a bout of injuries have left him watching the The Royal Blues’ impressive campaign from the sidelines.

He has only featured twice this season since his return to action in late November, but the Super Eagles is determined to win back his place in the side.

“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t frustrating at times, to watch your team play when you’re not able to play,” Obasi told BBC Sport.

“I was a bit dampened but I’ve learnt a lot from it and done a lot of work mentally and physically to get back to where I am now.

“I’ve been working hard and waiting patiently for my chance, and when it hopefully comes I’m determined to make the best of it.

“As a professional you know the competition for places is really good and you want to be out playing.

“The coach has been very encouraging so I have to work as hard as I can to get back into the fold.”

Obasi, who has made 28 appearances for his country, suffered a shin injury for the second time in his career in June but says his time in exile has turned out to be a blessing.

“When you look at other people, some have a much harder life than you so you’ve got to be grateful and stay positive,” he said.

“Sometimes you think you’ve been hard done by, but you’ve got to look forward and I’ve learnt a lot from it.”

Obasi’s last game for Nigeria came in a 0-0 friendly draw against Botswana in November 2011, in what was coach Stephen Keshi’s first game in charge.

And the man who gave him his last cap told the local media this week that Obasi still has an international future with the African champions.

But with only two substitute appearances coming in the Uefa Champions League and German Cup, Obasi knows he has his work cut out.

“It’s heart-warming to hear the coach say that because it’s more than two years since I last played for my country,” said Obasi.

“But I cannot get carried away because without me they won the Nations Cup and qualified for the World Cup in Brazil.

“It’s motivational to know that there is a chance to get back but I must work extremely hard to earn a recall.

“I can’t kid myself thinking it’s going to be easy. But the hard work obviously starts now.”

Obasi appeared in Nigeria’s three group matches at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He is the only Nigerian to have appeared in all FIFA World Cups [Under 17, Under 20 and Senior] as well as the Olympics.
