Obesere: How I made more money from a song in one week than I did 19 years ago

Abass Akande Obesere returns to limelight 19 years after the release of ‘Egungun be Careful,’ one of his numerous albums. The hit song from the self-titled album has suddenly become the favourite of many Nigerians on social media. The unexplainable resurgence of the hit song has seen reigning Afropop acts flocking Obesere for collaborations. Though the Fuji singer still can’t figure out what led to the song’s resurgence, he says it’s a huge plus, in this interview with ADENIYI ADEWOYIN.

You’ve been the buzz on social media in the past few weeks over one of your hit songs, ‘Egungun Be Careful’, which was released 19 years ago. What’s behind the resurgence?

There is nothing without God’s knowledge. I will say thanks to the Almighty who let that happen because all I was told is that it has never happened before.

I remember that even the time I dropped the album it was really accepted as well. It is beyond my own imagination as well.

One thing I know is that the kind of music I play never fades. In whatever you’re doing, don’t limit it to just today but always think about tomorrow.

I may be singing with slangs but all the slangs that I use have meaning and that is why ‘Egungun Be Careful’ is still relevant today.

‘Egungun Be Careful’ is just like a warning that anybody can use anytime. You may be going out with a lady that doesn’t suit you but you don’t know and people will be telling you that you better be careful with that lady you are going out with. I sang the song then like fun but the way it came out again, I still can’t understand because it’s beyond my imagination.

It is believed in some quarters that you actually paid social media influencers to kick off the trend. How true is this?

I must tell you for a fact that before you can do such, that means you must have spent billions of Naira. I think it’s God’s work because calls came in from outside Nigeria as well and that was why I said it from the beginning that everywhere you go na God.

So you’ve been receiving calls from abroad too over the trend?

    Everywhere, not only in Nigeria.

How did you get to know about the sudden trend?

I’m also on social media as well because I usually give my people audience. At the same time, I have people around me that are working with me as well and who understand what is called publicity and social media management.

‘Egungun Be Careful’ was widely accepted when you released it 19 years ago, how would you compare its success then and now?

When the album was released by Mr Gbenga Adewusi of Bayowa Films and Records International, I collected my money and I am still collecting my royalties on it.

Now that it has come out again in a bigger form than when it was released, I am still making my money on it, so, it is a plus for me. I thank my star and I still appreciate all the fans that gave me the opportunity for more recognition.

When will the remix of ‘Egungun Be Careful’ with Zlatan be released?

The project will be released very soon but by next week Monday we will know the date when we will be shooting the video.

Will you consider cross dressing again in the video or should fans expect a calm Obesere?

The director will tell me what to do when he listens to the music.

Some people are of the opinion that the sudden trend is a result of the renewal of your alleged fetish powers. How true is this?

Everywhere you go na God. Even if you visit Babalawo or Alfa or Woli if God doesn’t stamp it, believe me, nothing will happen.

It is believed that your ratings dropped since you stopped cross dressing. What do you have to say to this?

I am a professional musician. It depends on the occasion, I am still agile as you are seeing me, the energy is still there and that is why I can still be recognized by corporate organizations like Nigerian Breweries. All they want to see in me is the way I perform on stage.

So it depends on the kind of occasion you pay for. Wedding performance is quite different from concerts or burial ceremonies and so on. I dropped the female costume more than 18 years ago after I have achieved what I wanted.

What did you want to achieve then?

It was to cut across to people that do not understand Yoruba by doing something that will catch their attention.

People have likened Naira Marley to your brand saying he is the new Obesere with lewd lyrics, what would you say about that?

I think it’s a plus for my brand as well. Some people have criticised my brand before but now I have a lot of followers in the Fuji way and Hip Hop way so I thank my star and that is why I also appreciate Naira Marley.

He was supposed to be on the ‘Egungun Be Careful’ remix with I and Zlatan but he was on his way to Dubai on the day we were recording.

What other collaborations should we be expecting?

Aside from ‘Egungun Be Careful,’ we can still do something else. I wouldn’t want too much remix of the song. After this one with Zlatan, maybe we can do two more then close the chapter and move on to something else.

I am the Paramount King of Music. ‘Egungun Be Careful’ is a song that re-blow me. I appreciate the Hip Hop people. In the olden days if you want to listen to Hip Hop you have to listen to the appropriate one.

Either you listen to Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown or Usher because we didn’t have much of our people doing that genre then but now it is a different game. You can see that I and some of my other Fuji colleagues have also mingled with the Hip Hop acts.

The kind of song that we sing is traditional music and there is no way it can fade. Hip Hop is just like a borrowed culture but we thank God that it is now in the hands of Nigerians, even American artistes are trying to feature Nigerian artistes.

How many copies of ‘Egungun Be Careful’ were sold when it was released 19 years ago?

More than a million copies and I’m still making money.

How will you compare the success of the song 19 years ago and now?

I have made more connections and more money in the past one week trust me. When you have confidence in yourself and at the same time have your God and never give up on whatever you are doing.

What is your assessment of Fuji music and do you think there is a future for Genre?

There is a future for Fuji music. Like Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, who died years back, his songs are still selling. When you want to listen to sensible music, you have to listen to Fuji music, so Fuji music can never fade.

How would you describe the late Barrister?

A very straightforward person, a father in the music industry, Fuji music creator. Those three are okay to describe him.

What is responsible for your idea of direction of music?

You have to do something that people will recognize you easily. If you are copying somebody else’s style people will not recognize you and by so doing, you are giving that person more publicity. Just be unique with your thing.

How do you source for your slangs?

I am a very good listener, we may be talking now and I will pick a few things from what you’ve said and you won’t know and I will turn it into slang, and you won’t know that I picked it from you when you hear the slang except I tell you.

  • Obesere, Fathai Balogun, Toyin Aimakhu, others in Somolu Babes

Obesere, Fathai Balogun, Toyin Aimakhu, others in Somolu Babes

Top Nollywood actors and actresses have stormed locations across the city of Lagos to feature in a new action-packed movie titled Somolu Babes.

A production of Shoprite Films and Video Limited, the film, produced by frontline Nollywood actress, Sola Gbokoyi, popularly known as Shoprite, is expected to premiere in 2016 before being released into the home video market. The Producer also said it will be screened in cinemas across the country.

The movie, which stars the likes of the Paramount King of Fuji Music, Abbas Akande Obesere, Fathai Balogun, Toyin Aimakhu, Sola Gbokoyi Shoprite, Murphy Afolabi, Afolabi Shonde, music star, She-baby, Regina Chuckwu, Ademola Adesanya, among others, is directed by Adebayo Tijani.

Somolu Babes is a story of the many struggles of the indigent residents of the many communities scattered all over the underdeveloped parts of towns and cities. It also mirrors the determinations and breakthroughs recorded by youths and other underprivileged people of these backwater communities, in spite of their many challenges.

According to Shoprite, her new flick is also a good study on how the menace of cultism can best be addressed. “To curb cultism, we must understand why young people join cult groups and why they engage in violence at the risk of their lives. It is not enough to tell people to shun cultism. It is more important to make cultism unattractive to them. This is part of the things to be learnt in my new work, Somolu Babes,” she said.

In spite of its focusing on the societal ills like cultism, violence, indecent dressing and the likes, Shoprite was quick to add that the equally important themes of love, trust, betrayals and loyalty, were also addressed in Somolu Babes. It was scripted by Sola Gbokoyi herself and shot within Somolu-Bariga area of Lagos State.

Gbokoyi, producer of the flick, said the new flick is her fourth production. Previously, the heavily endowed mother of three has produced three films to her credit; Soprite, Belawu as well as Shoprite in London. She has also featured in several other films produced by friends and colleagues, including Fathia Balogun, Afolabi Shonde and Adebayo Tijano among others.

    Obesere’s son floats record label

Son of self-styled Fuji musician, Abass Akande Obesere, has taken a bold step to float a new record label called R-Entertainment, giving reasons he doesn’t want to follow the same genre as his father.

Lekan, who is based in Dublin, said he desire to have a different identity from the acclaimed Paramount King of Fuji.

“I don’t want to play Fuji music because my great grand dad was a Fuji musician. My dad too is a Fuji musician. And a lot of people don’t know that two of my father’s brothers are into Fuji music as well,” he said.

The young lad arrived Nigeria recently with two acts on his label; rap artiste, Abiodun Azeez, aka Beezy and Hip-hop sensation, Akinyemi Akintoye, known as Sajan.

Speaking of the mission of R-Entertainment in the Nigeria music scene, he said, “I started R-Entertainment two years ago. It is about promoting music in Africa. I have been collaborating with top promoters in Dublin. I was part of the team that brought Wizkid, Davido and others from Nigeria. I just felt it is about time I come back home to add value to what we have now. And by so doing, we are going to be promoting a couple of singles from the two acts on the label. Beezy is a rapper, and already, he has a single titled Pawon, produced by TJ, while Sajan is a hip-hop artist. He too has a single titled Soyoyo. These two singles we shall be releasing officially on Nigerian radio stations from next week,” he revealed.

On R-Entertainment, his sojourn in Dublin and how he met his two signees, Lekan said: “The label started in 2013 in Dublin after I did my first club show for which I brought an artiste from the UK. I just wanted to test the waters with that show, and it turned out to be a successful show. I continued with the club shows in Dublin, but I didn’t just want to stay glued to that platform.  So I decided to think out of the box; everyone knows my dad is a musician, and I didn’t want to sing. At that point, I decided to sign my first artiste, Beezy. We did a couple of stuffs and I thought that since I have a rapper, it would make sense to get a singer as well. I then decided to bring Sajan on board. Together we’ve done a lot of works in Dublin. So we then decided it is about time to come back to Nigeria where we came from and contribute our quota to the music industry.

  • Again, Obesere goofs

    Again, Obesere goofs

IF you are a lover of Fuji music or a fan of top Fuji musician, Abass Akande, aka Obesere, you would have probably seen the imposing poster of his new release on VCD at record shops all over the place.

In the new work titled “No Rapping”, he sang about his recent rape saga, involving a 28-year-old businesswoman, Olanike Olaiya.

However, what will strike any educated fan is the seeming emptiness, and confusion in the title of the new release. Out of sheer overzealousness, Obesere left one totally confused about his intention and even the message he wanted to pass across to his fans, particularly because of the usage of the word “Rapping” in that context.

Evidence that he wanted to absolve himself of the allegation is clearly stated on the poster: “Japata Night… Ema fi enu ba irawo mi je… Rapping ba wo.”

Since the report broke out a few weeks ago, Obesere has been assuring his numerous fans that he will give a blow-by-blow account of the unfortunate incident in an album. He has even announced that he will soon produce a movie that will chronicle his ordeal for the viewing pleasure of his fans.

But if the title of the latest work, No Rapping, is anything to go by, then, he might simply have only rapped as he did in his song, Jaforie, featuring singer Reminisce. So, he might probably need to urgently produce another album with a meaningful title that will clearly express his intention, which is that he didn’t rape Olanike, as alleged.

  • Rape Scandal: I have stopped bleeding, says Obesere’s Mistress

Olanike Olaiya, the woman allegedly raped by Fuji musician Abass Akande, a.k.a Obesere, has said that she has stopped bleeding – about two weeks after crying out for help.

Olaiya said though she had not fully recovered, she would not speak on the issue any more.

In an interview with a weekly magazine, Olaiya, who said she cooked for the artiste on the fateful night, was quoted to have said that “In the middle of the night, he came to me and demanded sex. Despite being clever, I fell that night. He raped me. Not only that, he also inserted a ring in my private part. That was why I started bleeding.  Even as I speak to you now, I just stopped bleeding.  I am not okay yet.  But I thank God that their plan to sacrifice me for wealth had failed.”

When asked why she had gone into hiding and refused to appear for further investigations at the Adekunle Police Station, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, she said, “They knew what they did to me. They begged me to forget everything, but I refused.  I also refused to go to Panti again because I suspected that the man handling the case is Obesere’s friend.  All I know is that the truth shall prevail. But I thank God I am alive.  God will judge the three of us.”

Meanwhile, Obesere has concluded plans to shoot a movie on the rape saga.

According to findings, the artiste has written a script about the alleged rape incident and is currently contacting artistes who will fit into the different characters. It is not yet certain if the famous musician will be playing the lead, but prominent artistes will feature in the movie.

Unconfirmed reports say that about N20 million has been budgeted for the movie.

The popular musician was recently arrested by the Police in Lagos State for allegedly raping the 29-year-old businesswoman at his Okota, Lagos residence, an allegation which the artiste denied.

The victim said she was in Obesere’s house to discuss a business matter on the night she was allegedly raped.

  • Obesere didn’t rape Olanike, says victim’s relation

Obesere didn’t rape Olanike, says victim’s relation

In Ibadan-based woman, Mrs. Bola Okoro, has described as untrue the allegation by Miss Olanike Olaiya that popular Fuji musician, Alhaji Abass Akande, a.k.a Obesere, raped her during a visit to his Okota, Lagos home.

Olaiya had alleged that the popular musician advised her to sleep in his house on that fateful day when she went to seek his assistance about her business.

However, in an interview with The Nation in Ibadan on Saturday, Okoro explained that she had been responsible for the upkeep of Olaiya and her daughter, Folawe, for over five years.

She added that Olaiya had earlier revealed her plans to blackmail Obesere. According to her, “I warned her not to try such a thing and I thought she would heed my advice. Obesere is my business partner and I introduced Olanike to him, so he could help her in her business. I didn’t know she had an evil intent. She was with Obesere on Tuesday when she called me that she was coming to Ibadan to check on her child the following day. But I told her to hold on because I was coming to Lagos for a meeting. She came to meet me at the venue of the meeting. There was nothing wrong with her until we got to Ibadan. But Obesere called me that Olanike said she was bleeding, so I should take her to hospital.

“When I asked her what happened to her, she told me that she needed money and that I should join her to defraud Obesere. But I refused. She said she needed N10million. So, I was surprised to know that she later went to Lagos and reported the matter at the Okota Police Station.”

Okoro, who further alleged that some people were backing Olaiya to tarnish Obesere’s image, also said “Her real name is Morenike Kikelomo. I offered to take her in after her parents sent her out as a result of her undisciplined lifestyle. I have known Obesere for over 12 years. He is a responsible and kind-hearted individual who cannot hurt a fly. I wonder why he would stoop so low to rape or use a girl for ritual when so many girls out there want to have him.”
