•Orders students to present tax slip of parents

Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has sacked revenue agents and contractors in all the markets in the 177 communities of the state.

He also ordered the arrest of anybody seen collecting revenue from any market in the state for onward prosecution.

Obi accused the agents of being fraudulent, claiming they have deprived the government billions every year. The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Robert Okonkwo, who announced the sack, said the move was to eliminate the activities of revenue agents who collected much money but declared little or nothing to government.

Okonkwo said “There is no reason to engage revenue agents or contractors any longer, they short changed government and diverted much money”.

The state also ordered pupils and students to present the tax slip of their parents or guardians or risk missing this terms examination in December.

Okonkwo said market executives will now be used to collect tolls from traders, who are to pay an annual fee of N6, 000.

Obi woos investors in South Africa

Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has urged South African investors to establish industries in the state.

Some South African companies have industries in the state. They include

SAB Miller, a brewing company with a factory in Onitsha and a Fortune 500 Company, which is building its facility in the town.

Addressing an investors’ forum in South Africa, Obi named some of the country’s companies that are doing well in Nigeria, including telecommunications giant, MTN.

The governor assured South Africans that Anambra is a good place to put their money for good returns.

Describing Africa as investors’ virgin land waiting to be exploited, Obi noted that Anambra is a good business destination for investors.

He said: “In Nigeria today, Anambra has the highest number of entrepreneurs, the biggest market and the most resourceful people.”

On the areas that are ripe for investment, Obi said that Anambra can host many sectors, giving example with Agriculture; he said that Anambra can host big agricultural firms that are ready to develop value chain for the product in such a way that local players would key into their operations. He also said that Anambra was ripe for a packaging company that would produce different packages for many companies that had started operations in the State, among others.

Obi assured them not to worry about overcoming logistics problems associated with investment, describing himself as one-stop-shop that will be available at all times to facilitate their operations.

In his remarks, one of the investors, represented by Mr. Binnoer Prevad said that with the success of SABmiller in Anambra and MTN in Nigeria, that coming to Nigeria to invest had become an attraction. He said they were more strengthened that Nigeria had people like Obi, who, according to him, “appear to be at home with the abc of investment.”

Obi was accompanied by the Chairman of the House Committee member on Commerce and Industry, Umeh Ikechukwu; Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Ndubisi Menakaya; and the Senior Special Assistant on Investment, Mark Okoye

    Obi applauds partnership with church

ANAMBRA State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has declared the state is already reaping the fruits of partnership with the church, especially in the education and health sectors.

He spoke while presenting a N15 million cheque to Holy Rosary Specialist Hospital and Maternity, Waterside Onitsha for the on-going ultra -modern maternity complex project.

Obi also presented another N10 million cheque for continuation of work on the students’ hostel of the School of Midwifery of the hospital.

He said he was impressed with the pace and quality of work on the projects and assured that government will ensure that they are completed according to specifications.

The governor commended the commitment and dedication of the church in executing the projects.

This, he said, has further reinforced and strengthened the state/ government partnership with the mission.

The Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, described Governor Obi as a man of integrity who has continued to fulfill promises made to people.

Okeke noted that his administration has continued to feel the pulse of the people and remained responsive to their needs and aspirations.

  • Obi hails Glo for helping to revamp Nigeria

Anambra State  Governor Peter Obi has hailed telecommunications giant Globacom for initiating projects that will help to build a better nation.

The governor spoke in Onitsha at the inauguration of a block of classrooms which the company built at the Metropolitan College.

The project is part of the company’s sponsorship of the Ofala Festival, a popular yearly event in the town.

Obi said Globacom has demonstrated that “it is a company that truly cares about the future of this great country”.

The governor noted that the burden would be less on government, “if corporate organisations can do what Globacom is doing and partner the people and the government to bring about a better society”.

After inspecting the facilities in the classrooms, he said: “I must confess that this structure and the facilities therein show the passion Globacom has for this country. This is because when you train the young ones and give them a solid foundation, you can have a better future and society. The facilities in this block are world-class and we sincerely commend Globacom for bringing this to Onitsha.”

The governor was in company of Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.

The monarch said it was heart-warming to note that Globacom kept the promise it made a year ago at the foundation-laying ceremony of the block of classrooms.

He said most schools in Nigeria have “become dilapidated and have become relics of their past ”.

Igwe Achebe added: “We need private and corporate interventions, like this, to help salvage the educational system in Nigeria. We are happy that Globacom kept its promise to deliver this structure in 12 months and it is important for us to maintain this structure. I want to use this opportunity to call on other corporate bodies in Nigeria to emulate Globacom and bail out our educational system.”

Globacom Chairman Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr. said the banquet “is a celebration of the Obi of Onitsha as a man of honour, a distinguished and detribalised Nigerian, an accomplished captain of industry and an iconic figure who, in the last 10 years on the throne, has devoted his energy, wisdom and resources to improving the lives of his people and putting Onitsha Kingdom in the global economic and cultural maps”.

Highlight of the banquet was the cutting of the anniversary cake by Igwe Achebe. The cake was donated by Globacom.

At the inauguration of the block of classrooms, the principal of the college, Mr. C. C. Anazonwu, said the building of the structure “is geared towards empowering our youths by creating an enabling environment for effective teaching and learning”.

Globacom’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Mrs. Ben Ayede, explained that the partnership between Globacom and Onitsha residents on Ofala Festival had begun to yield good results with the empowerment of over 100 youths and the building of classrooms.

Mrs. Ayede said the company “is irrevocably committed to any projects that are tagged at eliminating poverty and empowering the Nigerian people in all facets of life”.

At the Ofala Royal Banquet, organised in honour of the monarch to mark this year’s festival and his 10th year anniversary on the throne, Igwe Achebe said Globacom has brought succor to the people.

He said the likes of Adenuga Jnr. “are few and hard to come by in Nigeria”.

  • Obi urges more help for flood victims

Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has urged wealthy individuals and organisations to donate relief materials to flood victims in various parts of the state.

The governor spoke in Awka, the state capital, after visiting the victims.

He said individuals and groups should send their materials to the office of the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

Over 1.2million victims have been camped in various locations, including Bishop Ajayi Crowther Primary School, Onitsha, behind the Holy Trinity Church.

Others are the Army Barracks in Onitsha; Onitsha South Local Government secretariat; Oyi Local Government Area, among others.

The Coordinator of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Transform Nigeria Movement, Comrade Obi Ochije, yesterday berated the National Assembly members from the state for what he called their lukewarm attitude towards the disaster.

He noted that only the governor deserves to canvass for votes during elections because he abandoned every other thing on Monday to evacuate the victims. Ochije said: “Who are they deceiving? When election comes, all of them will start running from one corner to another, looking for people to vote for them again.

“But the time for help has come for those who voted them into power. Yet, they are nowhere to be found. They only know about themselves. Are they waiting for these people to die before they help?

“We are talking of those who are dying and need help. Some politicians are talking of the 2014 election. If these people die, who will vote for them?

“My organisation will make sure that nobody casts their votes for these selfish senators and House of Representatives members when the election comes in this state. They are not representing anybody, they are all selfish.

A former Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Paul Obidigwe, has said the people would only vote for politicians who assist the people in their time of need.

Obidigwe, who is the Chairman of Omambala Forum, led other members of the forum to the affected communities in Anambra East, Anambra West and Ayamelum Local Government Areas.

They donated relief materials, including bags of rice, bags of garri and other items.

The senator representing Anambra North and widow of the late Senate President, Dr Chuba Okadigbo, Margery, visited Anambra East and West yesterday to empathise with the flood victims.

She donated materials to the victims in Aguleri, Anam and Nzam.

Mrs Okadigbo regretted the level of destruction.

She urged the Federal Government to do assist the people.

  • A potpourri of Abati, Lady Gaga, Ben Obi and SLS

A potpourri of Abati, Lady Gaga, Ben Obi and SLS

When a columnist is assailed by a torrent of issues, dire and critical, he often resorts to cooking them all with one pot ( a cauldron if you will). This column has gathered the above in-the-news dramatis personae to x-ray what they have in common or uncommon.

Hurray, Reuben Abati can bite too!: Ouch, we don’t want to think for a moment that our dear colleague, Dr Reuben Abati has been pressured into posturing like an ‘attack dog’ for the president too. Sorry we have been asked to use ‘attack lion’ at least in the spirit of the corps. While I will not divulge who made this all-important correction, you and I know who has been pressuring our Abati to make his bite as ferocious as his bark lest his office would be relocated near Aso Rock kitchen where Mama can rework his media offerings which she thinks are beginning to lapse into annoying literary essays.

Well, if he did not want to heed the warnings, the recruiting of a wild, if not hungry ‘lion’ into the mix has snapped our venerable Reuben into quick march. Who would not, what with the ‘initial gra gra’ of the second lion raising dust everywhere and perhaps getting all the freebies. It didn’t matter that Reuben had done quite well in the past 14 months under the extreme and peculiar circumstances he found himself. He had done his very difficult job with unusual aplomb, gradually elevating his office to a quality presidential instrument of public engagement – reflective, authoritative, genuine and germane.

However, it seems Abati has been pushed to change from the civilized style to the crude Nigerian way. Abati showed us his teeth last Sunday in a widely circulated article: ‘The Jonathan they don’t know’. So much is wrong with the piece apart from the effusion of canker and abuse. Now who are ‘they’? Is it the masses of Nigerians who voted overwhelmingly for Jonathan just last year? Yes Reuben has a ‘new’ job to do now but he is versed enough in the art of public perception; he surely knows that the president lost Nigerians in January when he ambushed them with that vicious New Year gift of ‘subsidy’ removal. Look at the tsunami of incongruities that has trailed that singular, crazy action. Has any problem been solved? Look at the mind-bending corruption unfolding under his principal’s watch. You are right Reuben, we do not know this President any longer.

Abati  opened his piece snapping at all manner of ‘enemies’ of his principal calling them all manner of names like cynics, ignoramuses, unintelligent, thoughtless, anarchists and alaseju – the extremist. You must remember this word which General Ibrahim Babangida popularized at the peak of his dictatorship prelude to clamping down on the Nigerian free spirit as represented then by lecturers, unionists, activists and of course, newspaper houses. Did Reuben deliberately refrain from using the English word ‘extremist’ in his write-up and settled instead for the Yoruba term, alaseju?

Need we remind our dear friend that this ignoramus mob of critics has been part of the democratic culture from the beginning of time? One American president once described his horde of critics as “a nattering nabob of negativism.” Let me close with this quote from Abati’s piece: “The clear danger to public affairs commentary is that we have a lot of unintelligent people repeating stupid clichés and too many intelligent persons wasting their talents lending relevance to thoughtless conclusions.” Well Reuben should accept our sympathy but nobody, not even the idiotic columnist will hand him his script to rework before publication. And of course, if he and his principal don’t like the Nigerian smoke, they should quit the Nigerian kitchen.

A Lady Gaga-ed world: now you may begin to wonder what the enfant terrible of American entertainment world, Lady Gaga has got to do with this column? Nothing really except that she is at number 14 in the Forbes list of 100 world’s most powerful women. The salacious, often ill-clad and flesh-flashing musician is listed as a celebrity.( Hey, my ancient reader, celebrity is now a profession in this new world in case you have not noticed, thank you.) Lady Gaga (pardon me I couldn’t be bothered with her real name) comes ahead of the president of Argentina, the prime minister of Australia, the prime minister of Thailand, the president of Malawi and the president of Liberia. She even comes ahead of Queen Elizabeth II of England. She is rated to be by far more powerful (whatever that means) than numerous women of notable achievement and substance including our own Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The message Forbes is passing to us is that the world has become so terribly dumbed- down and stupid that it places so much values on a young woman who does little else than dress wildly and showcase her body. Can you see the direction the world is travelling?

Ben Obi drops Ogbunigwe on Ndigbo:  Chei, our dear elder, Chief Ben Obi, who is adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on inter-party affairs has lobbed a grenade at his people. In his wisdom, Chief Obi has advised Ndigbo not to contemplate the presidency in 2015 until his boss, the incumbent has decided whether he wants a second term or not. It may sound unbelievable if not ludicrous but that is the way of the Igbo elite, he is the quintessential house negro. Give him a small pot of porridge and he mortgages his homestead. It was the same situation in 2003 when Chief Ojo Maduekwe, then minister in President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration admonished that it was idiotic for Ndigbo to contemplate the Nigerian presidency ostensibly because his boss wanted a second term desperately.

What has changed in Igboland since 2003? Nothing, excepting that Elder Maduekwe has remained in one miserable appointment or the other since then. Do these people know what Ndigbo suffer by having fewer states with huge population in Nigeria? How many federal projects has been completed in Igboland since 2003? Do they know why Igboland is today a wasteland for kidnappers, assassins and pimps? Our leaders and elders can’t go home anymore and termites build multiple mole hills in their obi. Our elders now observe traditional rites in the cities. E woo, aru eme na ala Igbo. With men like these, who need leaders and elders.

Sanusi: the joker in the (Central) Bank: those who gave Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (SLS) some benefit of the doubt would have by last week, given up hope entirely on him. This fellow has proven for sure that he has no clue (this harmful word again) about running the central bank, the pulse of any nation’s economy. First he is too loquacious, too impulsive and he enjoys grandstanding a great deal. This is not the nature and character of supreme money men of the apex bank ilk. They are hardly seen, hardly heard unless in matters of extreme monetary importance.

Second, who says the banks in the country must be in perpetual reform mode.(it’s the CBN that need a forensic reform). Since 1999, there has been this morbid instinct to continuously tinker with our banks. The result is that the banking system has been thoroughly ravaged by these ill-informed, and one must say, ill-motivated reforms. Now, Sanusi, the current banker of bankers seems to have worked himself into a mire and as we say in my place, a man who has been beaten to the ground can only spray dust and nothing more. Sanusi’s  current irrational action of introducing five thousand naira currency notes only signals that he has unraveled completely and the best thing that can happen to him now is to help him out of that seat in the best interest of all. He has become the joker in the bank.

  • Obi’s war on kidnappers

    Obi’s war on kidnappers

•Good idea, but the government can do better by following the rule of law

Ifite-Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State played host to Governor Peter Obi of the state on September 5. But the visit was devoid of the fanfare usually associated with such gubernatorial visits. It was a business unusual trip undertaken in the governor’s efforts to rid the state of armed robbers, kidnappers and other undesirable elements that constitute a nuisance to law-abiding citizens in the state.
Anambra State, like most states in the south-eastern part of the country has been seriously troubled by these outlaws. Indeed, they have almost become laws unto themselves, instilling fears into the minds of especially the rich that they kidnap for ransom or rob of their property. So, it was soul-lifting when the state police command made good the governor’s threat to make the state unsafe for the criminals by arresting a suspect, Mr Olisagbo Ifedike, and another member of his gang on September 3. Then, on September 5, Governor Obi was in the town to personally supervise the demolition of two buildings belonging to the suspect, said to be a kingpin in the illicit business, following allegations that the buildings were being used for criminal purposes.
Of course, arms were also recovered from the buildings. These included 27 AK 47 rifles, one K2 riffle, two type-06 rifles, one General Purpose Machine Gun, one Rocket launcher, 17 rockets, six pump action guns, three dane guns, one Barrett pistol and 13 Rocket grenades, as well as 12,800 rounds of AK 47 live ammunition, 530 rounds of LAR ammunition, 95 rounds of GPMG live ammunition, 1,000 rounds of K2 live ammunition and 143 magazines. Security experts say these are enough to defeat a small army.
The arrest of a suspect like Ifedike is expected to give people in the area some relief. Indeed, the people had themselves showed their disapproval of the suspect’s activities when an angry mob in the town burnt parts of his buildings, smashing the windows, doors and furniture even before Governor Obi’s arrival. When the governor arrived, he personally supervised the demolition of the structures believed to have been built with proceeds from kidnapping and other crimes in the presence of some members of his executive council.
Given the gravity of the deprivations and deaths that the criminals have caused, we may want to applaud the action. This is much more so that it has the legal backing of the state house of assembly. Our worry, however, is whether that state law can supersede the common law presumption that a suspect is deemed innocent until proven otherwise by a competent court of law.
We appreciate the governor’s concern for security of lives and property in the state. But the rule of law must be followed, in spite of the circumstantial evidence against the suspects. There have been cases of people who suffered miscarriage of justice in the past; we have seen people that had been killed before the truth that they were not responsible for the crime over which they died surfaced. Indeed, this is a major argument against the death penalty. As things stand, the preponderance of evidence seems to weigh against the suspects, but then, it is still the courts that should convict them and prescribe the punishment. Moreover, the structures destroyed are legacies that could be converted into public use at the end of the case, instead of demolishing them.
We agree with the governor that jobless youths in the area should take advantage of the various economic empowerment programmes of the government to earn a decent living. But it is important that traditional rulers as well as town union executives also show more concern for security in their areas.
  • Obi seeks prosecution of oil thieves

Obi seeks prosecution of oil thieves

Anambra State Governor Peter Obi yesterday said Nigeria cannot continue to lose nearly 50 per cent of its budget to crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.

He called for the prosecution of illegal bunkerers of petroleum products, no matter how highly connected they may be.

Obi spoke at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State, during the 4th Emmanuel Egbogah Legacy Lecture on Petroleum Economics Policy and Strategy.

The lecture was organised by UNIPORT’s Emerald Energy Institute for Energy Economics, Policy and Strategic Studies in collaboration with the Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS) of the university.

The, which took place at the Ebitimi Banigo Auditorium, was to mark the 70th birthday of Emerald Energy Institute’s benefactor, Dr. Emmanuel Egbogah, a former presidential adviser.

The keynote address was presented by Peter Behr of Signet Advisors Limited, Switzerland, with papers presented by eminent scholars across the globe, including Prof. Amos Nur of Stanford University, the United States (US).

Obi, who was the Special Guest of Honour, said: “We cannot continue to have a situation where nearly 50 per cent of our national budget is stolen. We must address the issue aggressively.

“I thank President Goodluck Jonathan for what he has done so far in terms of dealing with the fuel subsidy and oil theft.

“Those stealing the crude oil are Nigerians and nobody is above the country. No matter how connected they are, we want to disconnect that connection.”

The governor said it is unfortunate that corrupt persons are celebrated in Nigeria, adding that corruption has eaten deep into every sector of the economy.

Urging Nigerians to celebrate responsible and honest individuals, he said Egbogah was well celebrated in Malaysia.

Obi said leaders must he held responsible for the situation of things in the country and urged the followers to always tell the leaders the truth.

UNIPORT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Ajienka said the university’s foray into petroleum policy matters would have been impossible without Egbogah’s philanthropic gesture.

Ajienka said: “In Dr. Egbogah, we have far more than a friend of the university and committed philanthropist, who is ready to partner with UNIPORT at all times without counting the cost. His association with the IPS in particular has impacted positively on our activities.

“I am pleased to announce that work on the Emerald Energy Institute building is nearing completion. It is my hope that the building will be commissioned early next year.”
