Mrs Obiano said Governor Willie Obiano handled women’s welfare as among his administration’s priorities.

The beneficiaries were needy women, among whom were widows. They all received certificates of successful training in addition to  working tools and take-off grants from the NGO.

The Southeast Report gathered that over 600 others have already been trained and empowered, while names for the fourth batch were being compiled.

It was also gathered that the trainees were selected across the 21 local government areas of the state for training.

Such skills range from soap and cosmetics making, tie-and-dye, beading, hat-making to hair-dressing, and baking, among others. There was also community health care.

Mrs. Obiano thanked the trainees for making themselves available, while expressing gratitude to God for keeping her on the path of humanitarian service.

She said the training would help to equip trainees with relevant skills in areas of their training to become self-reliant, job creators, family breadwinners and escape from poverty.

The governor’s wife advised them to remain obedient to their husbands in the face of the empowerment programme that had made them income earners.

Mrs. Obiano noted that CAFÉ had been supportive to the Obiano administration to make life meaningful to the people, especially, the indigent women, widows and the physically challenged.

According to her, “since inception CAFÉ has provided 800 physically challenged persons with prospthetic limbs, carried out free cleft and lip palate corrective surgeries to 120 children with abnormalities”

“Also, embarked on the building of toilet projects in select community’s markets to boost environmental hygiene and preserve dignity of market women as well as building of modern houses for widows who live on mud houses among others”

“The only thing that gives me joy is to put smiles on the faces of people especially the needy ones in our midst”

“If you are happy, then I am happy, when you become self-reliant and employers of labour, make your home a good place to live in and impact on lives and don’t feel that now you are empowered to make money, that you are above your husbands, husbands are the heads of family and should be accorded respect,” she said.

One of the graduands, Mrs. Calista Nwalioba, while speaking to The South east Nation, thanked Obiano’s wife for the empowerment training and provision of working tools and what she called seed money.

Nwalioba assured that she would make the best use of the materials and financial resources to meet the needs of her family, while also contributing to the development of the state.

Also, Mrs. Mercy Obi and Ann Nwankwo, who were both presented with gas cookers with ovens and Ogochukwu Chukwulobelu (dryer and wash basin), told The Southeast Report that they would always be grateful to the Obiano government for the assistance.

    Obiano’s wife gives out wheelchairs

It was just as well that her response to the rumours was charity. For several months wife of Anambra State governor Ebelechukwu Obiano was out of public view, with some speculating that she was dead. But she has brushed aside all the rumours not as much with words as with action. She gave out wheelchairs to physically challenged persons at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.

The presentation of the materials coincided with her birthday which she celebrated with the physically challenged.

As she was being kind to the needy through her Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ), a philanthropist Dr. Tony Anukwu of Tona Geological Services was donating to the NGO.

Anukwu gave out 20 motorcycles and gas cookers to CAFE at the Governor’s Lodge where he urged other philanthropists to donate to Mrs Obiano’s pet project.

While giving out the wheel chairs to the physically challenged persons, Mrs. Obiano said, “There is a reason why some children of God turn-out physically challenged in their present conditions”

“There is something God wants you and me to do in such a challenging situation. I don’t believe anybody is handicapped, because it means the person is worthless; I see it that you only have challenges.

“My mission on earth is to help mankind….When my husband became governor, I bought the idea of starting a pet project, but objected to limiting the focus area to just one intervention area.

“I decided to delve into many focus areas to enable me touch many people with diverse needs. I was a Marriage Counselor for 15 years and since 1991, I promised our Mother Mary and our Lord Jesus that I am going to champion the cause of the less privileged ones in our society.”

The president of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JNAPWD), Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, commended Mrs. Obiano for her endless streams of empowerment programmes beneficial to the physically challenged persons since her husband’s administration.

He recalled that in about one year plus in office, she has facilitated the establishment of three rehabilitation centres well accessible to disable persons in the three senatorial zones of Anambra central (Oba), Anambra north (Aguleri) and Anambra south (Nawfija).

However, receiving the 20 motorcycles and gas cookers from Dr. Anukwu, Mrs. Obiano expressed satisfaction to the donor and his wife for their continuous support to her CAFÉ.

She said, “I am impressed with what is happening here today. It is a confirmation that God loves Anambra State. This further confirms that my decision to register CAFE, an NGO that caters for the whole of the family is not in vain.”

“The fact that philanthropists and our poeple are joining hands with us is a thing of joy that should be commended.”

“I have been doing selfless work before I became the wife of the governor, I sometimes get worried at the enormity of the task, but I also believe that we have prominent sons and daughters of Anambra who are their brothers keepers like the Managing Director of Tona Geological Services, Mr. Tony Anukwu and his amiable wife. I thank them for their kind gesture.”

Speaking with The Nation, Anukwu said they had followed closely the empowerment programme of the first Lady and decided to support it, adding, it was my motivation.

He said “We are here to identify with the wife of the governor for her continuous care for the less privileged and the indigent in support of the work of the governor.”

“We have been monitoring CAFE programmes right from Lagos where she lived before joining her husband in the service of our people. My family and friends will continue to support CAFÉ.”

  • Obiano’s wife equips health Centre

The challenges, once huge, are being surmounted. At Eziowelle, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, child-bearing was quite arduous. Some women delivered on a bench as the community health centre lacked everything it should not.

Help has come, thanks to the wife of the state governor, Ebele Obiano who has provided facilities at the health facility.

She promised to help last year. Now she has fulfilled her pledge, as she presented a power-driven delivery bed designed to provide support for the mother during delivery.

The designed delivery bed  equally aids the nursing staff in the birthing process.

The bed could be powered with electric to gain height and has back-rest adjustment which provides support for mother during labour.

The women in the community were worried during Obiano’s wife first visit; even their visitor wept.  Five months later, the situation has changed.

The joy of the women forced the local government chairman, Emmanuel Idemobi to declare that the council would take special care of the first child to be delivered on the new bed at the health centre.

He thanked the governor’s wife for what he described as her latest gift of charity, adding that the support of the people for the governor, Chief Willie Obiano would never wane.

The matron of Eziowelle health centre, Mrs. Monica Ekwealor told The Nation that the equipment donated to the centre by Obiano’s wife would be properly utilized.

She commended her for keeping her promise of not allowing the sufferings of the less privileged women in the community to continue.

On her part, Chief Ebelechukwu Obiano saw the donation as a natural reaction to what she saw on the ground when she visited the place last year.

Mrs. Obiano said that she was sure that what she had done would go along way in ensuring safe delivery for women at the centre.

She said, “I remember that when I came sometime in September 2014 one of your complaints that touched me was that your facilities have gone bad that you have to resorted to undertaking delivery of babies on a bench”.

“It touched me because I felt that should not be happening in this century especially in our state”.

“That is why I promised them a bed before and went ahead to procure a standard delivery bed, but didn’t find time to present it to them before now” she said.

Furthermore, she told them that she was always touched by things concerning the welfare of children and women.

This, she said, was made easy by her pet project, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), a non-profit, non-partisan outfit which has mandate to care for the less privileged and reduce the vulnerability of women and children.
